Swedish businessman Nile Bergqvist is delighted with his new hotel, the world's first igloo hotel. Built in a small town in Lapland, it has been attracting lots of visitors, but soon the fun will be over.In two weeks'time Bergqvist's ice creationwill be nothing more than a pool of water. "We don't see it as a big problem," he says. "We just look forward to replacing it."Bergqvist built his first igloo in 1991 for an art exhibition. It was so successful th at he designed the present one, which measures roughly 200 square meters. Six work men spent more than eight weeks piling 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base; when the snow froze, the base was removed. "The only wooden thing we have left in the igloo is the front door," he says. After their stay, all visitors receive a survival certificate recording their success. With no windows, nowhere to hang clothes and temperatures below 0℃, it may seem more like a survival test than a relaxinghotel break. "It's great fun," Bergqvist explains , "as well as a good start in survival training."The popularity of the igloo is beyond doubt: it is now attracting tourists from all over the world. At least 800 people have stayed at the igloo this season even though there are only 10 rooms. "You can get a lot of people in," explains Bergqvist. Whether the activity is tourism, research, government, policing or business, the lack of a common language can severely delay progress or can stop it altogether.Although communication problems of this kind must happen thousands of times each day, very few become public knowledge. Publicity comes only when a failure to communicate has major results, such as strikes, lost orders, legal problems or deadly accidents--even, at times, war. One reported example of communication failure took place in 1970, when several Americans ate a species of poisonous mushroom. No remedy was known, and two of the people died within days. A radio report of the case was heard by a chemist who knew of a treatment that had been successfully used in 1959 and published in 1963. Why had the American doctors not heard of it seven years later? Possibly because the report of the treatment had been published only in journals written in European languages other than English.Several comparable cases have been reported. But isolated (孤立的) examplesdo not give an impression of the size of the problem--something that can come only from studies of the use or avoidance of foreign-language materials and contacts in different communicative situations. In the English-speaking scientific world, for example, surveys of books and documents consulted in libraries and other information agencies have shown that very little foreign-language material is ever consulted. Library requests in the field of science and technology showed that only 13 percent were for foreign language journals. The language barrier presents itself entirely to firms who wish to market their products in other countries. British industry, in particular, has in recent decades often been criticized for its assumption (设想) that foreign buyers will be happy tocommunicate in English, and that awareness of other languages is not therefore a matter to be considered first. In the 1960s, over two-thirds of British firms dealing with non-English-speaking customers were using English for outgoing letters; many had their sales language only in English; and as many as 40 percent employed no one who was able to communicate in the customer's languages. A similar problem was identified in other English-speaking countries, especially the USA, Australia and New Zealand. And non-English speaking countries were by no means free from the same problem--although the widespread use of English as an alternative (可替换的) language made them a bit more able to communicate with other countries. The criticism and publicity given to this problem since the 1960s seems to have greatly improved the situation. Industrial training projects have promoted an increase in language and cultural awareness. Many firms now have their own translation services. Some firms run part-time language courses in the languages of the countries with which they are most involved; some produce their own technical glossaries (词汇表), to ensure consistency (一致性) when material is being translated. It is now much more readily accepted that marketing efforts can be delayed, damaged or ruined by a failure to take the language needs of the customer into consideration.46. Communication problems may come to the attention of the public when ______.A. somebody has diedB. a serious traffic accident has happenedC. serious results have been causedD. people have trouble in travelling47. What is the probable meaning of the underlined word “remedy” in Paragraph 2?A. doctorB. mushroomC. poisonD. treatment48. What can we infer about American doctors from the case of the poisonous mushrooms?A. They probably only read reports written in English.B. They hadn’t read that report of the treatment.C. They didn’t know how to treat such a case.D. They were unable to get reports written in other languages.49. Firms of English-speaking countries use English only when marketing their products because ______.A. English is their official languageB. they don’t know their products will be sold abroadC. people in their countries don’t know other languagesD. they think foreign customers will be happy when English is used50. Which of the following ways has been used by the British companies to solve the problem of language barrier since the 1960s?A. Employing foreign workers.B. Setting up their own translation services.C. Providing English training for foreign customers.D. Stopping exporting goods to foreign countries.D.Mo was waiting in the corridor outside her class. "Mo, please wait I want to talk to you." Mo could see that Terry had been crying, her face was pale and her eyes were red. Mo couldn't say a word. “Listen," said Terry. "I'm really sorry I haven’t answered any of your calls, but we're having a terrible time at home. My dad had a heart attack two weeks ago and he's in hospital. He had a big heart operation today and I was very worried about him. I know it was stupid, but I was reading texts from my mum to see how the operation was going, but Mr. Reed caught me with my phone. He thought I was cheating. But, providing electricity is not the major advantage ofwaste-to-energy plants. In fact, it costs more to generate electricity at awaste-to-energy plant than it does at a coal, nuclear, or hydropower plant. The major advantage of burning waste is that it considerably reduces the amount of trash going to landfills. The average American produces more than 1,600 pounds of waste a year. If all this waste were landfilled (在垃圾填埋地上处理), it would take more than two cubic yards of landfill space. That’s the volume of a box three feet long, three feet wide, and six feet high. If that waste were burned, the ashes would fit into a box three feet long, three feet wide, but only nine inches high! Some communities in the Northeast may be running out of land for new landfills. And, since most people don’t want landfills in their backyards, it has become more difficult to obtain permits to build new landfills. Taking the country as a whole, the United States has plenty of open space, of course, but it is expensive to transport garbage a long distance to put it into a landfill.TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN?Some people are concerned that burning garbage may harm the environment. Like coal plants, waste-to-energy plants produce air pollution when the fuel is burned to produce steam or electricity. Burning garbage releases the chemicals and substances found in the waste. Some chemicals can be a threat to people, the environment, or both, if they are not properly controlled. Some critics of waste-to-energy plants are afraid that burning waste will hamper (妨碍,阻碍) recycling programs. If everyone sends their trash to a waste-to-energy plant, they say, there will be little motive to recycle. Several states have considered or are considering banning waste-to-energy plants unless recycling programs are in place. Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York City have delayed new waste-to-energy plants, hoping to increase the level of recycling first. So, what’s the real story? Can recycling and burning waste coexist? At first glance, recycling and waste-to-energy seem to be at odds (不一致), but they can actually complement (弥补) each othe r. That’s because it makes good sense to recycle some materials, and better sense to burn others.Let’s look at aluminum, for example. Aluminum mineral is so expensive to mine that recycling aluminum more than pays for itself. Burning it produces no energy. So clearly, aluminum is valuable to recycle and not useful to burn.Paper, on the other hand, can either be burned or recycled—it all depends on the price the used paper will bring.Plastics are another matter. Because plastics are made from petroleum and natural gas, they are excellent sources of energy for waste-to-energy plants. This is especially true since plastics are not as easy to recycle as steel, aluminum, or paper. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.A professor of environmental health and his students began studying the idea of rooftop gardening for cities. “I think vertical farming is an idea that can work in a big way.” said Despommier. Why would we want to build skyscrapers filled with vegetables when we’ve been farming on the ground for 10,000 years? Because as the world’s population grows — from 6.8 billion now to as much as 9 billion by 2050 — we could run out of productive soil and water. Most of the population growth will occur in cities that can’t easily feed themselves. And the fact that modern agriculture and everything associated with it —chemical fertilizers and transportation full of carbon —is a significant contributor to climate change, and suddenly vertical farming doesn’t seem so ma gic one in the sky.“Vertical farming could allow food to be grown locally and sustainably.” says Glen Kertz, CEO of Valcent. The result saves space —vital in urban areas--- and allows farmers to irrigate and fertilize with far less waste. At Valcent’s El Paso lab, crops grow in rows on conveyor belts. Moving them gives the plants the precise amount of light and nutrients needed, letting them grow 15 times as much vegetable as on a normal farm with 5% of the water that traditional agriculture does.Dedspommier plans to build a 30-story, city-block-size vertical farm that would have transparent walls to maximize sunlight and would produce enough food for 50,000 people. But it would cost hundreds of millions to build a full-scale skyscraper farm. That’s the m ain drawback: construction and energy costs would probably make vertically raised food more costly than traditional crops.Section B (10 marks)Directions:Read the following passage, Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.Several years ago, Austin Gutwein paid a visit to Africa. South Africa Golf Association President Colin Burger offers a reason. “We can play 12 months of the year, which is obviously an advantage for us, so we can actually groom our juniors up until the seniors, and we can play a lot of tournaments all over the country in good weather conditions,” said Burger.South Africa also has programs to spot and develop young talent, regardless of social background. The South Africa Golf Development Board offers programs across the country to teach children to play golf. Every day after school, they can come for free to perfect their swing (挥棒) with a coach. When the children are good enough, they can practice at a regular golf course, and the best get to play in tournaments around the country. For the South Africa Golf Development Board, golf is more than a sport. Regional manager Andy Ostle said, “The game of golf is very similar to life itself. It teaches them etiquette (礼仪); it teaches them values; it teaches them honesty. And the most important thing is that it takes them off the streets. They’re doing something worthwhile that they can actually pursue (追求) once they become an adult.”And there are benefits for those young players who do not become professionals. “To play golf, they also have to go to school. They have to pass their exams, and if they pass their exams, then there is a much better possibility to get a job, especially in the golfing industry,” said Ostle. In the South Africa Golf Association, 25 percent of the players in the junior section turn professional after three years. The future of South African golf is already in good hands.36. According to Andy Ostle, the game of golf .A. is the best sport in the worldB. intends to teach children etiquetteC. is not really their original sportD. helps children grow healthily40. What can we learn about the young players according to the text?A. They are tired of playing football and turn to golf.B. About a quarter of them will become professional players.C. They go to learn playing golf in order to find a good job.D. Most of them play golf in order to get rid of school exams.BPaul Larsen’s Vestas Sailrocket 2 is half boat, half plane, and hopefully it will soon be the fastest sailing boat on water too. “Everything above the water is an aeroplane and everything below the water behaves just like a boat,” says Larsen, a professional sailor who’s now turned his attention to breaking the speed sailing record, describing it as his lifetime mission (使命). “A large part of this boat is flying,” says Larsen. “When it’s going at high speed, it’s like a well-built paper airplane.”The record is open to any craft (飞行器), as long as it’s using wind and water, and there is at least one person on board. At present, it is held by American kite surfer Rob Douglas, who reached 55.65 knots (about 103 kilometres per hour) over the required 500 meter course in 2010.The craft may be using the latest technology, but its concept (理念) is based on a craft that was written about nearly five decades ago. American rocket scientist Bernard Smith wrote about a sailboat in 1963 that he believed could reach 40 knots —a concept that was well ahead of his time. Larsen’s team tracked down Smith in 2007 to tell the then 97-year-old that they had broken the 40 knots, using the ideas Smith came up with 44 years earlier. Based on that design, they have since been able to go 50 knots and are pushing to go even faster.“It is dangerous,” Larsen admits. “You go out there and you don’t realize the consequences if the smallest thing goes wrong.” The worst crashes are the ones when the boat dives directly into the water. “That’s a killer. At least in the air you slow down.” Although there is some danger, Larsen and his team won’t stop until they hit the 60 knot mark and take with it the world speed sailing record.41. Larsen hopes to realize his dream to .A. set a new world speed sailing recordB. design a craft which can fly and sailC. win a gold medal in the Olympic GamesD. put his Vestas Sailrocket 2 into market42. To challenge the record, a competitor must .A. make a boat of special paperB. sail the boat designed by himselfC. go through half a kilometer courseD. make use of the latest technology43. What can we infer from the text about Bernard Smith?A. He was a professional sailor himself.B. He instructed Larsen’s work now and then.C. He designed the boat particularly for Larsen.D. He got to know his concept proved to be a success.44. The most dangerous moment comes when Larsen’s boat.A. reaches the highest speedB. gets into water from the airC. starts to fly into the airD. slows down in the air45. These youngsters or hippies criticized middle class values. Hippies were in favor of peace, love, and personal freedom over political and social systems. The hippies fashion was popular with the youth across the United States in the 1960s. The hippies designed a whole new lifestyle of their own.The 1960s’ hippies fashion included the dressing styles which the youth of today are interested in. These teenagers decorated themselves with flowers in their hair. They enjoyed body painting and tattoo body art. Not much of this was ever appreciated by the older generation. The men wore long, loose hair like the women. They tried to show off themselves and didn’t care about what others thought about them. In the 1960s’, the hippies fashion offered a very informal and casual look. The fashion clothing was a form against traditional cultures. The personal expressions of people resulted in the styles that had great influence on the world today. They wore bell-bottom jeans, and T-shirts were part of everyday wear. Women wore long skirts and dresses. Short skirts were worn with knee-high boots, while the long skirts were considered better matched with sandals (凉鞋). They were used to represent peace and love. Artificial flowers and real flowers were worn in the hair.During the hippies movement, men and women grew their hair long, contrary to popular belief. Usually hair was parted in the middle. During this time period, long sideburns (鬓角) were the thing for men. Fashion accessories (饰品) for women during the time also included bandanas and other headgear, scarves. Hippies decorated their hair with flowers or little hair clips or a colorful headband across their forehead. The long easy flowing hair tied back a thin ribbon became popular throughout the 1960s.Women’s jewelry was mostly influenced by Native American or any similar handmade designs. Sporting any necklace with beads was hugely popular. Jewelry that made music was highly desirable since music was abasic part of the hippies scene. Necklaces and jangly ankle bracelets were popular among women. In general, the ankles received a lot of attention, especially amongst those living on the warm west coast, because many hippies preferred to go barefoot (赤脚的).Hippies fought back the ugliness of the Second World War and turned the attention of fashion towards natural beauty as much as possible. The youth movement affected the teen fashion industry in a major way. The hippies fashion keeps changing with time, but women who found their own individuality and style in the 1960s have never let it go and passed much of their own hippies influence on to their daughters.46. The most common types of people to use small talk are those who do not know each other at all. It is also common for people who are only acquaintances, often called a“ friend of a friend” , to use small talk. There are certain “ safe ” topics that people usually make small talk about. Some social events (such as a party) require small talk among guests who do not know each other very well. The most common time for small talk to happen is the first time you see or meet someone. However, the next time you see each other, you might just smile and say nothing. Do not interrupt ( 打断 ) two people in order to discuss something unimportant, such as the weather. One way to show how much you love them is by building them a great doghouse of their own. Make sure that your dog is safe, comfortable, and happy by following these tips when you build your doghouse.Consider the breed (品种) of your dog. What your dog will need to have the doghouse equipped with depends on the breed. If your dog has long or thick hair or is a traditionally “cold weather” breed like a Malamute or a Husky, they will need less protection from bad weather than a smaller or shorter haired dog like a Chihuahua. If you are unsure or if your dog is a mixed breed, ask an expert about any special consideration that you might need to keep in mind when building a doghouse.Measure your dog. Your dog will reach an average height and weight when fully grown. Even if you are building your doghouse while your dog is a puppy (幼犬), you will want to make sure that the doghouse will be a comfortable size once your pet is fully grown. Imagine what size your dog will be when it is an adult and build your doghouse accordingly.Make it breathe. Enough ventilation (通风) is the most important feature of your doghouse. Even if the house is big enough for your dog, little ventilation will make it uncomfortable for your dog. So consider using materials like wood that would allow air to move freely. Make sure the main door to the doghouse is large and able to be left open, and consider an extra window in one of the doghouse’s walls for extra air and light.Keep it roomy (宽敞的). The doghouse should be wide enough for your dog to sit, stand up, and move around. Your dog will probably take toys, sticks or other things that it likes best to the doghouse, so make sure you leave room for these things, too.Choose a proper place for the doghouse. Keep the doghouse off the ground. This keeps moisture (湿气) away and makes the dog comfortable and warm.Tips on 71The 72 of doingsoTo show your love for the dogThingsto pay attentionto the 73of your dogEquip the doghouse with things according to thebreed.Ask an expert for advice if the dog’s breed is74 .the size of yourdog75 the doghouse according to an adult dog’s size even if your dog is still little now.the ventilation of your dog Ventilation is the key.Use materials that let air 76 . The question, however, is “What is real happiness?” The desire for happiness has no meaning without understanding the real nature of happiness.Generally, ordinary beings consider sensual(感觉的)pleasures as happiness, and their actions are directed toward gaining these. According to them, searching for happiness means searching for pleasures of the senses. The question, “What is happiness?”, does not arise(出现)in their hearts, because in their hearts they think of a life full of sensual joys as a happy life. Some thinkers say, “Happiness does not lie in the objects of enjoyment; happiness or unhappiness lies in the imagination.” To prove their belief they give examples like the following one. A man has a two-storey house. When he thinks of those who have a house with three storeys or more, he feels unhappy. When he thinks of those who have just a cottage, he feels happy. Such happiness does not lie in possessions(占有物), but in the imagination. They advise people to take inspiration from those who have few possessions but are quite happy. If you only consider people wealthier than yourself, you will always be unhappy. If you want to be happy, they say, look at the poor. But it is unreasonable to hold that happiness lies in the imagination. And it is inappropriate to think that someone is happy if he only imagines himself better than the poor and the unhappy. This attitude also satisfies the sense of pride of possession. This can never be called happiness. Unless we find out where happiness lies, we cannot really become happy. Some ask people to do this or that, and say, “This way your desires will be satisfied. That way you will get what you want and become happy.” People holding these views regard happiness as satisfaction of desires and unhappiness as denial(否定) of such satisfaction.61. What kind of life can make common people feel happy?A. Life without pain and grief.B. Life full of sensual pleasures.C. Life with desire for possessions.D. Life full of imagination.62. But his dream is still to own Britain's big gest marble shop and open stores around the world.” Tina told The Daily Mail.“At the minute he is annoying me by asking about creating his won Marble King marbles, so that could well be the next step for him.”65. The best speeches often take on a combination of all three of these components(组成部分). However, before you can go about the writing of a great speech, it is important to set goals. Goals keep you, your speech and your audience focused. What a goal isIn the context of a speech, a goal is the purpose of the speech, and what it hopes toaccomplish. For example, the goal of a eulogy(颂歌) might be to celebrate the life of a loved one. The goal of a speech at a political gathering would be to inform the crowd about the political position of a candidate and persuade them to vote and campaign for the candidate in question(正被讨论的).Why a goal is importantWithout a goal, a speech is without direction. The goal informs the structure and content of the speech. For example, if a speech's goal is to convince people that smoking is bad for them, the speech will be structured with persuasive arguments to back up the goal. A speech with a goal of informing the audience will keep the information fair and factual.A goal is incredibly important to the speech's ability to connect with an audience. If the speaker is unaware of the goal of the speech, the audience will likely be unaware as well. This severely reduces the effectiveness of the message.Aside from informing the audience of the content and structure, a speech's goal drives the speaker to greater heights. If a speaker is asked to speak on a specific subject, but never establishes the goal, they won't know where to start in the research, organizing and writing of the speech.______________If you have been charged with(被委以) delivering a speech, establishing a goal can seem difficult at first. There are several things to take into consideration. First, think about who you will be speaking to. The demographic(人口统计) of your audience will likely determine whether you will be able to persuade them, or whether they will be able to sit through(一直坐到……结束). Second, think about the topic itself. If the topic is something controversial(有争议的), it may worth your while to consider an informative approach to present both sides of the issue. Finally, consider your resources. A speech with an informative or persuasive goal usually requires a great deal of research, and sometimes takes more time to write.69. According to the passage, what three components does the best speech combine?A. Informing, delivering and entertaining.B. Informing, persuading and entertaining.C. Informing, writing and delivering.D. Informing, writing and persuading.70. The goal of a speech at a political gathering might be ________.A. to persuade the audience to vote for a candidateB. to celebrate the life of a person you admireC. to entertain the audience with humor and magicD. to persuade the audience to buy new products71. All the following indicate the importance of a speech goal EXCEPT that ________.A. a speech will lose its direction without a goalB. a speech goal can help keep the audience aware of the speechC. a speech goal can help the speaker know about the research, organizing and writingD. a speech goal makes it possible for the speaker to achieve whatever he wants in life72. Which of the following can be filled into the blank as the subtitle for the last paragraph?A. How to achieve a speech goalB. How to deliver a difficult speechC. What to consider to establish a goalD. What to consider to deliver a speechDOnce when I was six years old I saw an amazing picture in a book called True Stories from Nature about the primeval(原始的)forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor(大蟒蛇) in the act of swallowing an animal. In the book it said:“Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole without chewing(嚼)it. After that they are not able to move and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion(消化).”I thought deeply then over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a colored pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. I showed my work to the grown-ups and asked them whether the drawing frightened them. But they answered:“Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?”My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing. I drew the inside of the boa constrictor so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need tohave things explained. That's my Drawing Number Two.The grown-ups' response this time was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of ba constrictors whether from the inside or the outside and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why at the age of six I gave up what might have been a great painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.So then I chose another profession(职业)and learned to pilot airplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable. In the course of this life I have had lots of chances to meet with a great many people. And that hasn't much improved my opinion of them. Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried showing him my Drawing Number One which I have always kept. I would try to find out if this was a person of true understanding. But whoever it was, he or she would always say: That is a hat. Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors or primeval forests or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge and golf and politics and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such an intelligent man.73. The writer drew his first picture in order to ________.A. show the grown-ups what the book was aboutB. frighten the grown-ups trying to enter the forestC. remind himself of the adventures of the jungleD. illustrate(说明)a boa constrictor's act of digesting an animal74. How did the writer understand the grown-ups' response to his second drawing?A. He was actually only good at academic study.B. It was a waste of time for him to keep on drawing.C. He had difficulty in communicating with the adults.D. He was good at anything but geography.75. The underlined word disheartened in Paragraph 4 could most probably be replaced by________.A. discouragedB. dissatisfiedC. discoveredD. disturbed高二年级上学期英语阶段测试参考答案单选1-5 ABDAC 6-10 DCABD 11-15 BADBC 16-20 ADAAD 21-25 ACCBA 26-30 ACDAC 31-35 DBCDD 36-40 CBBAC 完形41-45 ADABA 46-50 CDBAD 51-55 CBCDC 56-60 ABBBD 阅读61-64 BDCA 65-68 BDAD 69-72 BADC 73-75 DBA。
