Part Ⅰ25%
Directions: In this part, you are going to make a 3-minute dialogue with your partner. Pick one of the following situational topics and create the dialogue with as many useful expressions you’ve learnt as possible.
Situation 1
Suppose your mom/dad loves old songs of the 1970s while you prefer songs of the new century. Now work with your partner to create a dialog, representing the two different views and expressing your likes, dislikes and give your reasons for your preference.
A: Listen, someone is singing.
B: Enn? Yeah, it is an old folk song of the 1970s. My Mom likes the old songs of that time, because she thinks they are close to human feeling or life. But it’s not my cup of tea.
A: What kind of music do you like?
B: Rock music. I am a real fan of Rock music. I enjoy their wide range of sounds. A: Who is your favorite singer or group?
B: Beyond. What do you think of them?
A; I can hardly bear Rock music. They are all noise to me;
B: My parents don’t like them either. What about you? What kind of music do you prefer?
A: I like pop music; I like their easy, simple themes and clear rhythm. My favorite singer is Jolin whose dance is also amazing. She has released a lot of Music Albums. And I have been to her vocal concert once.
B: Do your parents like her music, too?
A: No, they like Classical music, they don’t like the pop music very much, and sometimes they think pop songs are noisy.
B: Well, Most parents are the same.
Situation 2
A and
B are talking about B’s boy friend Henry. B thinks he is handsome, smart and hardworking. A thinks he is too old, but B doesn’t care. B thinks true love and mutual understanding are more important than other people’s opinion.
A: Hello, Nina.
B: Hi, I have something new to tell you. Henry and I have been together for a long time, and we are going to be engaged to him.
A: Oh my god! Is Henry the man who is eight year older than you? What are his strong points?
B: Yes, I think Henry is handsome, smart and hardworking, and he is the very man I am looking for.
A: A ren’t you concerned about the age gap? He’s much older than you.
B: Well, I know he’s a few years older than you, but age doesn’t matter too much for me.
A: Don’t you have any disagreement when deal with some affairs because of the age gap?
B: No. he is considerable and understands me very well.
A: But what would your parents and friends think?
B: I think true love and mutual understanding are more important than other people’s opinion.
A: Love is amazing. You love each other. That is very important. Congratulations! B: Thank you.
Situation 3
A finds
B very upset. B says he just broke up with his girlfriend Alice, because she wants to get married and settle down, but he wants to have a career first. A tries to comfort B.
A: Why do you look so upset?
B: Nothing serious.
A: I know it’s not about your work. So anything goes wrong with Alice and you?
B: Well, you’re right. I just split up with her.
A: Oh, I’m sorry. You must have a broken heart. I thought you two made a good match.
B: I think I should have a career first but she wants to get married and settle down right now.
A: Well, you are more interested in career success, while she is ready for marriage and a family. It’s hard to decide between marriage and career.
B: yeah, it’s hard.
A: I don’t know what to say to comfort you, but try to cheer up!
B: You know, we were together for a long time. I can’t help thinking about her all he time.
A: Take my word for it: this is not the end of the world. Believe me, you’ll soon get over it.
Situation 4
You and your partner see a free magazine of ads and begin to discuss advertising. You argue for advertising while your partner argues against it. You both express doubt about the other person’s argument and explain your own point of v iew.
A: Look, here is a free magazine of ads.
B: Oh, it’s full of advertising. I don’t like ads, because I think it plays a negative role in our society
A: How could you probably think that?
B: I think that people shouldn't believe in advertisements. Some sellers provide customers with false information to cheat on them buying their goods so that they can earn more money. Advertisements mislead our customers. Some unhealthy advertisements also have bad effect on teenagers. What’s more, advertisements also
do harm to our environment. Advertisements waste so much resource.
A: I don’t agree with you. I think Advertisement plays a positive role in our society. Life needs advertisements. Everything in modern society is linked to information, while the main function of advertisements is to spread information on commodities, service, culture, employment, student enrollment and even marriage. One can obtain such information by listening to hearsay and making on- the-spot investigation, but the information provided by advertisements in doubtless the most direct, comprehensive and detailed. So Advertisement plays a positive role in our society
B: Ok. One coin has two sides.
Situation 5
Suppose you and your partner are talking about the influence of ads in our daily life.
A thinks ads have positive effects on us whereas
B thinks they have negative influence on us.
Lucy: As we know that the advertisement is everywhere in our modern society. Tome: Yes! It seems wherever we go, such small ads will greet our eyes: the supermarket, the subways, the stop sighs, the walls of public buildings, the garbage cans, and so on.
Lucy: I hate these advertisements. Many ads do spoil our daily life and waste our time. Tome: Oh yes! But we must see the advantage of the ads. For example, the ads provide us with a good collection of goods and service, from which we can make our best choices. What’s more, consumers can expect to have a best price by comparing and contrasting the prices and specifications of the goods advertised by different suppliers. I think that is great!
Lucy: I know that. But we can not ignore the disadvantages of the ads. In one hand, they interrupt the TV programs, filling our letterbox. People often feel burdened with the ads instead of satisfying with them. On the other hand, some of the ads are illegal, spreading false information and planning to treat people who are eager to solve their problems. Tome: In my opinion, the advantages are more than the disadvantages. So I tend to be in favor of their positive effects.
Lucy:Well, that’s your pinion. And I will keep my own!
Situation 6
Suppose you and your partner are shopping in a department store to buy a dress. You
are asking his/her opinion and your partner gives his/her opinion about the size, color, style, price and the way of payment.
A: what do I look like in this fancy purple dress?
B: Reallly great, you look beautiful.
A: what about the color? should I choose Brown or this one?
B: I think brown should be better. And this blue one is great too.
A: Ok, what about the style ? Is this a design of last year?
B: No, it is new style this summer.
A: do you think the waist part is a little large for me?
B: you can choose a smaller one here.
A: it is almost 1000 dollars, do you think it is too expensive for a night dress?
B:sure, 1000 dollars is obviously a high price. but consider the style and brand. i think it is worth that.
A: ok, so how do i pay for the dress.
B: credit card and cash are both fine
Situation 7
Create a dialog with your partner according to the table below.
B: I think it’s not decent for Chinese girls to wear a dress like that.
A: The dress seems quite alright to me. In fact, they looked pretty nice to me.
B: Do you really think people can wear that stuff and walk around the street?
A: Yes, I do. Don’t forget this is already the 21st century. Some people wear high-fas h ion clothes to show off their sense of style and wealth.
B: Well, I till think low-cut dresses are wrong. It would be better to spend the money on high-quality, traditional clothes.
Situation 8
Work with your partner and talk about the things you are frightened of, such as animals, heights, flying, exam, darkness, etc. A expresses fear and desperation and possible reasons behind them, while B comforts him/her and offers some advice to overcome the anxiety.
BOB: People are frightened of lots and lots of different things. Are you frightened of anything in particular?
Laura: Well, I’m afraid of walking alone in an open field at night.
Bob: What are you afraid of?
Laura: I don’t know exactly. Sometimes a shadow ahead scares me stiff. Sometimes the sudden
cry of a bird or something startles me.
Bob: What are you staying by yourself in a dark room?
Laura: That can be even worse. When it’s absolutely dark and silent, I wouldn’t dare walk anywhere. And I wouldn’t dare make a sound. I just want to hide under a blanket.
Bob: If you are scared of the dark, you’ll miss a lot of interesting experiences.
Laura: I guess so.
Bob: To get the most out of life, you should find a doctor to help you shake off your fear of the dark.
Laura: Yeah, that’s good advice.。
