Because she didn't have health insurance, G upta couldn’ t geta doctor' s help for her emotional problems.Sareana took charge of things at home. For example, she often cooked her fa mily’ s meals. When she and her mom were about to lose their home, it was Sareana who arranged a place for them to stay. For years, Sareana had been an active volunteer with several organizations. She even started her own group, Youth for National Change. It works to support the rights of young people.Sareana called a few adults she had worked with. After finding out about her situation, one couple opened their doors right away. But by August 2014, the couple no longer had room for Sareana and her mom. The two ended up living in their car. But did they really? They have simple stomachs. If baboons eat foods that have a lot of fiber, they get very little nutrition from that food, and then they don t have room for more nutritious foods. Baboons need foods with a lot of nutrients. Baboons should be picky eaters. In the 1990s, a team of primatologists(灵长类动物学家) solved this riddle. By watching wild baboons, the team of primatologists found that the monkeys ate whatever they could find as long asthe foods had a lot of protein and fat. Baboons avoided foods with lots of fiber. Many foods had high protein or high fat, and many foods had low fiber. So it looked as if baboons ate everything.Research on baboon foods made me wonder how baboons found their foods. I knew baboons were smart. For their size, they have big brains, and they remember a lot of things. Even though some baboon troops have more than 100 monkeys, baboons easily remember their friends and enemies. I reasoned that baboons might memorize the locations of some foods. For 18 months I lived in a tent in Ruaha National Park in Tanzania. I camped next to the river. I studied only male baboons because females have babies, and I didn’t want to scare the little ones. Each morning, I picked a different male monkey. Everywhere he went,I followed. Every time he ate, I wrote down the food type and how much he ate.I discovered that baboons did not find baobab trees randomly. Instead, the monkeys walked quickly and directly to baobab trees. The same was not true for other foods. Baboons used more random patterns to find elephant dung, young antelopes, and grasses. Sometimes they found these foods on their way to the baobab trees!9.What does the underlined part “this riddle” in Paragraph2 refer to?A.Where wild baboons live.B.How wild baboons find foods.C.If wild baboons eat everything.D.If wild baboons have simple stomachs.10.What do we know about wild baboons?A.They have few friends.B.They are not very smart.C.They have many enemies.D.They have a good memory.11. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?A. How the author studied wild baboons.B. The living environment of wild baboon.C. How female wild baboons give birth to babies.D. Differences between male and female wild baboons.12.It can be inferred that wild baboons know the location of_________.A.grassesB. baobab treesC. elephant dungD. young antelopesDI put my beef in the fridge before the"Use By"" date. If my milk's"Best If used By"date--- the last date by which food quality is the best----was yesterday, I'd never have it. The bread that expired (过期) last week? Throw it away. But after studying the different types of"expiration"labels, I learned that food lasts longer than I thought. In fact, food expiration dates talk about food quality, not food safety. They are added as a helpful guide to sellers and buyers. Here are the three most common labels.“Best If Used By"----This date suggests when a product will be at the highest quality. It will still be safe to eat after that date, but the quality will start to go down.“Use By”-----This date is usually found on items that go bad more easily, like meat. It's still OK to eat the product for a short period after the date, but don't wait too long.“Sell By"---- This date tells sellers when the product should be off the shelves. Sales are one way that stores try to get older products into people's bags, and it usually works quite well.“Use by” dates are a great guide for people like you and me, but it comes at a price. A report says that Americans waste about 30% of food every year. Part of that is because we follow expiration dates too closely and end up throwing out perfectly good food. It's such a shame. Luckily, we can change. Decide for yourself whether or not food should be thrown away. Does the color look right? Is the smell bad? Knowing what food is supposed to look. Smell and feel like is a life skill that we all should have. It will help you avoid eating food that's gone bad and stop you from throwing away food too early.13.What does the first paragraph show?A.Expiration labels are useless.B.Beef, milk and bread go bad easily.C.The author takes expiration dates seriously.D.The author is concerned about food safety.14. What does the author advise us to do?A. Ignore expiration dates.B. Never throw away food.C. Learn more life skills if possible.D. Pay more attention to the food itself.15.W hat's the best title of the text?A. How are expiration dates labeled?B. Expiration dates don't matter much.C. The most common expiration labels.D. What can we do about expiration dates?第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

They did most of their shopping in Nash, but before Nash was built, they shipped at the little town of Moran, where there was a small grocery store.I remember when the railroad came to Nash, when the first telephones came, and the first cars. We lived six miles from town so we missed out meeting trains. My mother was sick when I was small, so I did a lot of the household chores, even doing the laundry, as I was the oldest ,but I never worked outside with my five brothers. I remember going to school with my brothers. When we played basketball, we played outside, and the girls wore skirts and bloomers, and got along fine. I liked spelling matches, and we competed with other schools once or twice a month.I married Herm Messenger, a farmer in 1971. Eleven children were born to us, four boys and seven girls, four dead at birth, one pair of twins, Paul and Pauline. However, Pauline died when she was nineteen months old. My first washing machine was operated by hand, pushing the handle back and forth. Later, I got a machine with an electric motor. My first machine with a wringer(绞拧机)was a kind of a joke, as Herm took it to the church, and put it on the Christmas tree for me. That might not be exciting to a housewife today, butI thought it was!56. From the passage we can learn that the writer’s parents .A. had the first child unexpectedlyB. liked Missouri very muchC. had a hard time in NashD. had to shop a great deal57. What can we know about the author in the second paragraph?A. She saw for herself first trains, first telephones and first cars.B. She played, worked and went to school with his brothers.C. She enjoyed winning the spelling matches when at school.D. She did a lot of household chores when she was small.58. In the last paragraph the author suggests that .A. the way her husband put a wringer on a tree was funny.B. she was excited when she received the wringer from her husbandC. her husband was fond of playing a joke on herD. her first washing machine was electrically runBA study of older men in the Netherlands, known for its delicious chocolate, showed those who ate the equivalent(等量)of one-third of a chocolate bar every day had lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of death. The researchers say, however, it’s too early to conclude that it was the chocolate that led to better health. The men who ate more cocoa products could have eaten other food that made them healthier. Experts also point out that eating too much chocolate can make you fat—a risk for both heart disease and high blood pressure.“It’s too early to make recommendations about whether people should eat more cocoa or chocolate,”said Brian Buijsse, a nutritional epidemiologist at Wageningen University in the Netherlands, who co-authored the study.Still, the Dutch study, supported by grants(拨款)from the Netherlands’Prevention Foundation, appears to be the largest so far to document a health effect for cocoa beans. And it confirms findings of smaller, shorter-term studies that also linked chocolate with lower blood pressure.Researchers examined the eating habits of 470 healthy men who were not taking blood pressure medicine. The men who ate the most products made fromcocoa beans—including cocoa drinks, chocolate bars and chocolate pudding —had lower blood pressure and a 50 percent lower risk of death.“This is a very important article providing epidemiological support for what many researchers have been observing in experimental models,” said Cesar Fraga of the university of California, and Davis, who does similar research but was not involved in the new study.Could the study results apply to women?“our study consisted of the elderly mainly,” Buijsse said. “If you look at the other interventional studies, you see the same effects in men and women, younger people and older people. It may be thought the findings are generalizable to women, but you never know.”59. We can learn from the text that .A. researchers have concluded that eating chocolate can lead to better healthB. it’s too early to say eating too much chocolate makes you gain weightC. people in the Netherlands are least likely to suffer from high blood pressureD. there had been other similar studies before the Dutch study60. Which of the following might NOT be considered a product made from cocoa beans?A. Chocolate barB. Coffee drinkC. Chocolate pudding.D. Cocoa drink61. We can infer from the last paragraph that .A. It has been concluded that the findings are generalizable to womenB. It needs confirming whether women can share the same effectsC. The study results cannot apply to womenD. The findings are applicable to both men and women62. What is the main purpose of the text?A. To encourage us to eat as much chocolate as possible.B. To prove to us that eating chocolate can reduce blood pressure.C. To inform us of a study about the health benefits of chocolate.D. To warn us not to eat cocoa products because they can make you fat.CWorldwide, almost as many women as men die from heart disease. Yet most treatment methods have come from studies of men. Researchers are now learning more about ways that heart disease can be different in women. For example, they say a condition called coronary micro vascular syndrome (冠脉微血管综合症) appears to be more common in women than in men. When a heart attack is suspected, doctors look for a major blockage (阻塞物) in the arteries (动脉) that supply oxygen to the heart. With coronary micro vascular syndrome, fatty material spreads evenly (均匀地) in very small arteries of the heart. This buildup of plaque (血小板) along the artery wall narrows the flow of oxygen. The pain can be similar to that of blocked arteries. But doctors often miss this condition because it does not show up in the usual tests for blockages. Women are often sent home, thinking they are OK. Yet many are at high risk for a heart attack. In USA, researchers say as many as three million women could have coronary micro vascular syndrome. The Journal of the American College of Cardiology recently published findings from a government study. The study is called the women’s ischemia syndrome evaluation(妇女缺血综合症的评价),or WISE。

2019届高三英语10月月考试题第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

ATravis is the manager of G&G where he is responsible for forty employees and profits of over $2 million per year. He’s never late to work. He does not get ups et on the job. When one of his employees started crying after a customer screamed at her, Travis took her away. “Your working uniform is your shelter,” he told her. Nothing anyone says will ever hurt you. You will always be as strong as you want to be.”Travis picked up that lecture in one of his G&G training courses, an education program that began on his first day and continues throughout an employee’s occupation. The training has, Travis says, changed his life. G&G has taught him how to live, how to focus, how to get to work on time, and how to master his emotions. Most importantly, it taught him willpower. At the center of that education is an extreme focus on an all-important habit: willpower. Dozens of cases show that willpower is the single most impor tant habit for a person’s success. And the best way to strengthen willpower is to make it into a habit. “Sometimes it looks like people with great self-control aren’t working hard—but that’s because they’ve made it automatic,” Angela Duckworth, one of the University of Pennsylvania researchers said. “Their willpower occurs without them having to think about it.”The company spent millions of dollars developing programs of study to train employees on self-control. Managers wrote workbooks that serve as guid es to how to make willpower a habit in workers’ lives. Those courses are, in part, why G&G has grown from a sleepy company into a large one with more than seventeen thousand stores and profits of more than $10 billion a year.1. We loam from Paragraph 2 that employees in G&G must ________.A. attend education programsB. learn to give lecturesC. design a working uniformD. develop a common hobby2. Willpower will become a habit when employees can ________.A. focus on the profitsB. control their feeling wellC. protect themselves wellD. benefit from the job3. What can we infer from the passage?A. G&G has grown into a large company.B. G&G will spend half its profits training employees.C. G&G may become more successful in the future.D. G&G has to produce more workbooks for managers.BForget Cyclists, Pedestrians are Real DangerWe are having a debate about this topic. Here are some letters from our readers.■Yes, many cyclists behave dangerously. Many drivers are disrespectful of cyclists. But pedestrians are probably the worse offenders.People of all ages happily walk along the pavement with eyes and hands glued to the mobile phone, quite unaware of what is going on around them. They may even do the same thing while crossing a road at a pedestrian crossing or elsewhere. The rest of us have to evade (避让) them or just stand still to wait for the unavoidable collision. The real problem is that some pedestrians seem to be, at least for the moment, in worlds of their own that are, to them, much more important than the welfare of others.——Michael Horan■I love the letter from Bob Brooks about cyclists (Viewpoints, May 29). I am afraid they seem to think they own the roads.I was walking across Altrincham Road one morning when a cyclist went round me and on being asked what he was doing he shouted at me.The government built a cycle lane on the road but it is hardly used. The police do nothing. What a laugh they are!The cyclists should all have to be made to use the cycle lanes and wear helmets, fluorescent (发荧光的) jackets and lights at night and in the morning they should pay some sort of tax and be fined for not wearing them.——Carol Harvey■Cyclists jump on and off pavements (which are meant for pedestrians), ride at speed along thepavements, and think they have a special right to go through traffic lights when they are on red.I was almost knocked down recently by a cyclist riding on the pavement when there was a cycle lane right next to him.Other road users, including horse riders, manage to obey the rules so why not cyclists? It’s about time they had to be registered and insured, so when they do hit a pedestrian or a vehicle, or cause an accident, at least they can be traced and there might be an opportunity to claim.—JMLWrite to Viewpoints of the newspaper.4. Michael Horan wrote the letter mainly to show that ________.A. drivers should be polite to cyclistsB. road accidents can actually be avoidedC. some pedestrians are a threat to road safetyD. walking while using phones hurts one s eyes5. Carol Harvey suggests that cyclists should ________.A. be provided with enough roadsB. be made to pay less tax for cyclingC. be asked to ride on their own lanesD. be fined for laughing at policemen6. What is a complaint of JML?A. Very few drivers are insured.B. Cyclists ride fast on pavements.C. Pedestrians go through red traffic lights.D. Horse riders disrespect other road users.7. The underlined word “they” in the third letter refers to ________.A. accidentsB. vehiclesC. pedestriansD. cyclistsCLondon’s newest skyscraper (摩天大楼)is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing theShard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶). He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren’t regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆) of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before building work began, a lot of people didn’t want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.Other critics don’t like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.8. London’s newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of________.A. its costB. its sizeC. its heightD. its shape9. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to________.A. change London’s skylineB. in herit London’s traditionC. imitate the Egyptian styleD. attract potential visitors10. The critics who refer to social division think the Shard________.A. is only preferred by the richB. is intended for wealthy peopleC. is far away from the poor areaD. is popular only with Londoners11. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. The Shard: Cheers and ClapsB. The Shard: Work of a Great ArchitectC. The Shard: A Change for the Better?D. The Shard: New Symbol of London?DEl Nino, a Sp anish term for “the Christ child”, was named by South American fisherman who noticed that the global weather pattern, which happens every two to seven years, reduced the amount of fishes caught around Christmas. El Nino sees warm water, collected over several years in the western Pacific, flow back eastwards when winds that normally blow westwards weaken, or sometimes the other way round. The weather effects both good and bad, are felt in many places. Rich countries gain more from powerful Nino, on balance, than they lose. A study found that a strong Nino in 1997-98 helped American’s economy grow by 15 billion, partly because of better agricultural harvests: farmers in the Midwest gained from extra rain. The total rise in agricultural incomes in rich countries is greater than the fall in poor ones. But in Indonesia extremely dry forests are in flames. A multi-year drought (干旱) in south-east Brazil is becoming worse. Though heavy rains brought about by El Nino may relieve the drought in California, they are likely to cause surface flooding and other disastersThe most recent powerful Nino, in 1997-98, killed around 21,000 people and caused damage worth $36 billion around the globe. But such Ninos come with months of warning, and so much is known about how they happen that governments can prepare. According to the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), however, just 12% of disaster-relief funding in the past two decades has gone on reducing risks in advance, rather than recovery and rebuilding afterwards This is despite evidence that a dollar spent on risk-reduction saves at least two on reconstruction.Simple improvements to infrastructure (基础设施) can reduce the spread of disease. Better sewers (下水道) make it less likely that heavy rain is followed by an outbreak of the disease of bad stomach. Stronger bridges mean villages are less likely to be left without food and medicine after floods. According to a paper in 2011 by Mr Hsiang and co-authors, civil conflict is related to El Nino’s harmful effects—and the poorer the country, the stronger tiie link. Though the relationship may not be causal, helping divided communities to prepare for disasters would at least reduce the risk that those disasters are followed by killing and wounding people. Since the poorest are least likely to make up for their losses from disasters linked to El Nino, reducing their losses needs to be the priority.12. What can we learn about El Nino in Paragraph 1?A. It sees the changes of water flow direction in the ocean.B. It takes place almost every year all over the world.C. It forces fishermen to stop catching fish around Christmas.D. It is named after a South American fisherman.13. What may El Ninos bring about to the countries affected?A. Agricultural harvests in rich countries fall.B. Droughts become more harmful than floods.C. Poor countries suffer less from droughts economically.D. Rich countries’ gains are greater than their losses.14. The data provided by ODI in Paragraph 4 suggest thatA. victims of El Nino deserve more compensationB. governments of poor countries need more aidC. more investment should go to risk reductionD. recovery and reconstruction should come first15. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?A. To introduce El Nino and its origin.B. To explain the consequences of El Nino.C. To show ways of fighting against El Nino.D. To urge people to prepare for El Nino.

AThe United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special. However, the idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington.A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Having been raised by her father, Henry Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her.It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a selfless and loving man.Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge declared the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.Roses are the Father’s Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died. When children can’t visit their fathers or take them out to din ner, they send a greeting card. Traditionally, fathers prefer greeting cards that are not too sentimental. Most greeting cards are too special so fathers laugh when they open them. Some give heartfelt thanks for being there whenever the child need Dad.1.Th e United States is special in Father’s Day because ______.A.many people celebrate the day B.only American people celebrate the day C.America makes it an official day D.all men are honored in America2. How many years has passed before Father’s Day became an official day since the father’s day was celebrated?A.4 B.10 C.14D.243. According to the passage, on Father’s Day, ______.A.people will wear the same flowers to honour their fathers.B.only daughters wear red flowers to honour their fathers.C.children must go home to honour their fathersD.fathers are often honoured in different ways.4. According to the passage, we can infer that Henry Jackson Smart ______.A.was very kind to anyone B.did a lot for his daughterC.was the first father honored in 1924 D.always help others by giving moneyBOne morning in mid summer, I headed out for some time to myself on the trails of Fontenelle Forest in Bellevue, Nebraska. It was a typical warm and humid summer day in Nebraska. Starting out on the lush green trail, I was already uncomfortably warm. The bugs were everywhere: mosquitoes, gnats, flies, bees, you name it. I followed the stream trail, which made its way through four-foot high grass. I tried to enjoy the setting but had to constantly fan away the bugs in front of my face. I grew increasingly frustrated.Eventually becoming exasperated with the bugs, I stopped dead in my tracks and waved my arms all around while turning around in a circle. At the very moment, I saw what I had missed the moment before. It seems that a deer had been nestled in the tall grass just one foot from where I stood. I missed it because of my preoccupation with the insects which I believed were bent on ruining my morning. When I started making such a fit, the deer was forced to abandon its spot. It leaped in the air right before my eyes, literally, and dashed off for better cover. It was too late. I missed it. Now I was attentive and ready to see what was around me, but the sight that might have been seen was gone. I missed the enjoyment of being so close to wildlife! Immediately I wondered what else I was missing, and not just there on the trail. I wondered how the bothersome bugs of my life kept me from noticing really important stuff. This has become a life lesson that I’ve remembered often. It’s affected my visits with my Grandma, the time alone with my husband, and get-togethers with friends. I’ve learned from my mistake.5. Why did the author go to Fontenelle Forest?A. To get close to wildlife.B. To explore the trails.C. To enjoy herself.D. To search for the deer.6. How did the author probably feel when she missed the deer?A. SurprisedB. ShockedC. PleasedD. Regretful.7. The author would probably agree that _________.A. we should focus on important things in our life.B. we cannot get rid of bugs in our life.C. life will be better without bugs.D. everyone will make mistakes.8. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?A. To describe an unusual experience.B. To share a lesson she learned.C. To tell us a serious mistake she made.D. To show her dislike for bugs.C“Hit”is a small word but it has a lot of power. Baseball players hit the ball. Missiles hit an airplane. A car hits a tree.“Hit” also joins with other words to create many colorful expressions. One is hit the road. It means to travel or to leave a place, as suggested in this song, "Hit the Road." Another common expression is hit the spot. At first it meant hitting a spot at the center of a target with an arrow. Someone who did so was satisfied with his shooting. Now, hitting the spot usually means that a food or drink is especially satisfying.Another expression involving hit is hit bottom. Something that has hit bottom can go no lower. If the price of shares of a stock hits bottom , it might be the time to buy it. Its value can only go up. When a student's grades hit bottom it is time to hit the books. Hit the books is another way to saying it is time to study. Not hitting the books could lead to an unpleasant situation for a student. The father or mothermay hit the ceiling when they see the low grades. Someone who hits the ceiling, the top of the room, is violently angry. A wife may hit the ceiling because her husband forgot their wedding anniversary. To build something of wood, you usually need a hammer. That is what you use to hit nails into the pieces of wood to hold them together. When you hit the nail on the head, exactly on its top, it goes into the wood perfectly. And when someone says your words or actions hit the nail on the head, he means what you said or did was exactly right. If you are tired after hitting all those nails on the head, then it is time to hit the hay. Hitting the hay simply means going to bed. That is a good idea. I think I will hit the hay now.9. When Tom tells you his grades hit bottom, it means___.A. Tom hasn’t done well in school.B. Tom has achieved all he wished.C. Tom has read many books.D. Toms has made rapid progress.10. How will your father react if you get home at 2am after drinking too much?A. He will hit the nail.B. He will hit the ceiling.C. He will hit the road.D. He will hit the wood.11. If you ar e tired, you can say “____” to express you want to go to bed.A. hit the spotB. hit the booksC.hit ceilingD. hit the hay12. What can be the best title for the text?A. Hit and its story.B. American expressionsC. Hit and American customsD. Words and their functionDBefore he boarded the plane, 37 stone (about 235KG) Les Price had already been forced to pay for an extra ticket. Earlier this year a travel expert advocated a pay-what- you-weigh airline pricing scheme because heavier peop le cost more in fuel to fly. So the airline’s rules for passengers weighing more than 20 stone required him to buy two sets for himself. But when he got on board, insult was added to injury. Mr. Price found his seats for the flight to Ireland were not even next to each other –they were either side of another passenger’s seat.Mr. Price said the incident was one of many everyday difficulties he has faced since he began struggling with his weight. He sleeps on the ground floor because he cannot manage stair s, “I was the same as everyone else, working, playing rugby, training. I’d work 70 or 80 hours a week and play rugby on a Saturday. I wasn’t a lazy man at all.”Mr. Price then injured his back in an accident. He added: “I lost my mobility, developed sciati ca and I didn’t get out of the house for three months.” “When I was working, I had to get the calories in. I’d get up at 5am and have a cooked breakfast later. I also worked for a bakery, which involved physically hard lifting, moving things around.”Mr. Price said he is cutting down on his calories and attending an NHS weight management clinic. He said: “I want to be out there working. I feel guilty my partner is out there working all she can. Christmas is coming up and I feel awful I can’t do anything to help. I know a lot of people work the benefits system, but I want to be out there, not stuck at home.”13. Why did Mr. Price buy two tickets for boarding?A. Because he paid for his friend.B. Fudan University MuseumB. China Ichthyic Culture Museum at Shanghai Ocean UniversityC. Yifu Museum of China University of GeosciencesD. China Academy Museum at Hunan UniversityBI looked at my beautiful Christmas tree and sighed. It was time. The New Year was a week old and my tree still stood in the corner of our room with its collection of memories proudly displayed in a shower of colorful lights. I’d procrastinated long enough.I got up, went to the garage and dragged all the boxes into the room. The garland (花环) was the first to come down. The tree looked naked (光秃秃的) already. I took the large ornaments off next. They made a large pile on our bed. An hour later, our bed was covered with Christmas memories. Each pile contained an ornament along with its matching brothers and sisters from sets purchased many years ago.I prepared the boxes and carefully placed ornaments in their protective packaging, pausing every few minutes to admire a favorite. “Hey, little Santa!” I held the Santa from my childhood. “Thanks for being my friend for almost 50 years.” He was a little ragged (衣着破烂的) but still gives me a flood of wonderful memories. “Until next year, my dear friend.”There was a collection of handmade ones. My children made in their first years of school, more than 20 years ago. Made by tiny hands, they are far from perfect in design, but every year they go on my memory tree – memories of young giggles on Christmas morning and a smiling face when they handed them to me when I came home from work. “Look what we made, Daddy!”“Oh! It is beautiful. Let’s find a special spot on the tree for it.” Every year since, they are displayed.A few hours after I started, the filled boxes were back in the garage, the room was vacuumed (用吸尘器清扫) and I sat staring at a barren (空荡荡的) corner. The room seemed so empty. It took me two days of work to assemble (收集) and decorate my tree, but only a few hours to take it apart. My tree is a good marriage or a great friendship. Like the tree, they take a long time to assemble and decorate with memories, but can be torn down quickly.Every year I have to put my tree away, but not my marriage or friendships. I take great care of those. They get to glow in the corner of my life for as long as I live. I get to analyze my tree and find memories for a few weeks every year. I can do the same with the loves in my life every day. Take great care of your friendships and your marriage. Once they come down, they aren’t as easy to put back together asa Christmas tree. Stand them in that special spot in the corner of your heart and admire their glow.24. In the author’s eyes, the Christmas tree _____.A. is a collection of childhood memoriesB. is a symbol of long-lasting relationsC. takes too much time to decorateD. is full of out-of-date ornaments25. The underlined word “procrastinated” in Paragraph 1 probably means ______.A. reflectedB. celebratedC. decoratedD. delayed26. To the author, a Christmas tree is similar to a good marriage in that ______.A. both take time to build but fall apart easilyB. both remind him of bittersweet memoriesC. both need to be admired for some timeD. both get less attractive over the years27. What is the main theme of the article?A. We’d better put away Christmas decorations and recycle them each year.B. Friendships and marriages should be valued and managed carefully.C. Memories with friends and family should be cherished and relived.D. We should decorate Christmas trees with personal stuff and recycle.CIt’s a land where winter darkness is long, and summers bring continuous sunlight. However, people are very happy in Finland, despite the country’s natural challenges. Last month, the nation was named the happiest on Earth, according to the 2018 World Happiness Report released by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The Finns certainly have a high range of happiness, Eric Weiner wrote in his 2008 book The Geography of Bliss. There’s a stereotype (刻板印象) that Finns are introverted (内向的) and shy, because they often stay silent. But in fact, “for Finns, it is extremely rude to interrupt someone. This leads to us making pauses or taking our time to talk”, Krista Huhtala-jenks, a senior officer at Finland’s Minis try ofTransport and Communications, explained to CNN.Perhaps Finland’s love for heavy metal music and tango reveals the country’s true personality, however. Indeed, young Finns love heavy metal, while tango remains a huge part of Finnish culture for the older generation. The passionate dance started in Argentina, but it’s Finland that became the tango capital of the world. Every July, the Finnish town of Seinajoki draws thousands of people from all over the world to a four-day tango festival. During the festival, a tango king and queen are chosen.Another trademark (特征) of Finnish culture is the sauna (桑拿). According to CNN, the nation has about 3.5 million saunas – roughly one for every 1.6 people. And 99 percent of Finns take at least one sauna a week, BBC News reported. In Finns’ eyes, saunas are closely related to well-being. For example, if a person gets sick, he or she will take a sauna. Many women also prefer to give birth in a sauna, because “the walls of traditional smoke saunas were lined with naturally bacteria-resistant soot (抑菌的煤烟灰), making them the cleanest room in the house”, BBC News noted.Medical benefits aside, the sauna is also seen as a place to collect your thoughts. “Sauna is for your mind. It really helps you to calm d own in a modern society where it is never quiet,” Jarmo Lehtola from the Finnish Sauna Society, told BBC News. “If somebody wants to understand what it is to be a Finn, they have to understand what a sauna is. If you do not experience sauna, you do not exp erience Finland.”28. According to Huhtala-jenks, why do Finns often remain silent?A. They are too introverted to talk.B. They prefer to take time to think.C. They have plenty of time for conversation.D. They believe it’s impolite to interrupt others.29. How does the author show the sauna’s popularity in Finland?A. By giving examples.B. By raising questions.C. By presenting data.D. By making a comparison.30. How do Finns believe saunas benefit people?A. They help people to recover from cancer.B. They can reduce the pain of giving birth.C. They help people keep a peaceful mind.D. They’re a good place to look for inspiration.31. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the article?A. To explore the interesting history of Finland.B. To introduce some aspects of Finnish culture.C. To study Finns’ true personality.D. To show Finland’s love for saunas.DWhile the dangers of climate change attract more attention than other environmental issues, the problems of waste and toxics (有毒物质) also continue – and are worthy of attention and action. One of the fastest growing environmental problems of the past decade has been the rapid increase in electronic waste. As society has moved from the iPhone 2 to the iPhone 6, all of those old iPhones have had to go somewhere. Tablets, PCs, old TVs, DVD players and countless other devices are nearly always abandoned before their useful life is over. Many of these devices contain small amounts of toxic materials. When they are thrown away, these toxics can enter our garbage system. That system is not designed to handle dangerous waste. Here in New York City, efforts to manage electronic waste began during Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC program and continue under Mayor de Blasio’s OneNYC. This past January, New Yor k City and New York State started a ban on disposing (处理) of electronic waste with regular garbage. New Yorkers who throw their iPhone into the garbage could be subject to a $100 fine. While the city will not pick up electronics for you, 90 locations throughout the city, including Best Buy and Staples stores and the Salvation Army, will accept electronics that are not needed any more. In partnership with Electronic Recyclers International, the city began a collection program in November 2013 at apartment buildings. Buildings provide rooms or large containers for local people who need to throw their old devices away. Buildings can also decide on specific days for collection. However, consumers alone cannot address the issue of electronic waste. The companies that build and sell these devices must play a key role. Now it isn’t the time to get into the short lives of iPhones or whether or not this is planned, but if these products are going to be replaced so often then Apple and its competitors must design the phones to be easily taken apart for raw materials or parts to be used in other devices. This effort to recycle should become part of the design for engineers working on the next generation of electronic toys. In addition, companies should be offering rewards for consumers who trade in their old model to receive a new one. The production chain from producer to market shouldbecome a closed loop, with the product going back to an organization that can make some use of it.32. What is the fastest-growing environmental problem of the past decade according to the article?A. Global warming.B. Electronic waste.C. Air pollution.D. Population growth.33. What measures have been taken in New York City to manage electronic waste?A. New Yorkers who throw away used iPhones now receive a $100 fine.B. The city picks up electronic waste on certain days each month.C. All apartment buildings in the city now provide rooms to collect electronic waste.D. New Yorkers can now throw away unneeded electronics in specific locations throughout the city.34. Who should play a key role in dealing with electronic waste according to the article?A. Consumers.B. Local governments.C. Production companies.D. International organizations.35. What is the best way to reduce electronic waste according to the author?A. Consumers should use electronics up to the end of their useful life.B. Companies should try their best to produce electronics with longer lives.C. Companies should use less dangerous materials when producing electronics.D. Companies should produce electronics that can be easily recycled.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
