The children were surveyed between 2003 and 2007.The researchers defined adequate physical activity as at least an hour of exercise outside of gym class at least five days a week. Children who spent three or more hours a day watching TV,playing computer games, or chatting with friends—aside from time in school or time spent doing homework—were classified as sedentary. The researchers found only one quarter of the boys and 15 percent of the girls were getting enough exercise by these definitions. A quarter of boys and nearly 30 percent of girls were sedentary and didn't get enough exercise with girls less active than boys in every country aside from Zambia.Uruguay had the highest percentage of active boys, at 42 percent, while Zambia had the lowest, at 8 percent. Girls from India were the most active, with 37 percentmeeting exercise recommendation, while girls from Egypt were the least active, with just 4 percent getting adequate exercise. Children in Myanmar were the least sedentary, with 13 percent of boys and 8 percent of girls classified as sedentary. The most sedentary nations were St. Lucia and the Cayman Islands, with 58 percent of boys and 64 percent of girls spending at least three hours a day in sedentary activities.People show deep concern for kids' lack of physical activity in various nations. Why do they have a low level of physical activity? Guthold speculated(推测)that urbanization(都市化) could be a factor as well as access to cars and TVs.16.If you are sedentary, you________.A.are a diligent student spending much time doing homeworkB.have at least an hour of exercise outdoors every dayC.like watching TV and playing computer gamesD.spend a lot of time sitting down and not moving17.Which statement is TRUE about the finding of the study, led by Regina Guthold?A.Most children around the world don't meet the exercise recommendation.B.Girls in every country are no more active than boys.C.Children in rich countries relatively get less physical activities.D.Only 4 percent of the girls from Egypt are not active in exercise.18.Which could be the best title of the passage?A.American children are addicted to TVs and computersB.Nearly one third of children globally are couch potatoesC.Effects of physical activities on healthD.Unimaginable standard of physical health19.What would the writer be most likely to discuss in detail in the following paragraphs?A.The suitable amount of physical activities for students.B.Some of the factors for the popularity of cars and TVs among the kids.C.The reasons behind the lack of physical activities.D.The ways to make the most of physical activities.BOur lives were supposed to be more flexible and familyfriendly thanks to the technology at our fingertips. But in this age of BlackBerrys, recession pressures, working at home after hours and on weekends, family time may not be working out the way we thought.Busy parents who expected more time with the kids are finding that more work hours at home don't necessarily translate into quality time with them.A new generation of parents need to discover the meaning of “quality time”,researchers say. “Personally, just given the life I lead, I think there is something to this idea of quality time—spending productive time with children vs. just being around,” says Peter Brandon, a professor at Carleton College. He says en gaging or interacting with a child in activities such as reading or playing counts as quality time rather than “passive monitoring”, such as washing the dishes while the child is watching TV.“This_time_with_children_pays_off,” Brandon says. He notes that goodparentchild relationships result in children being happier and more successful, including at school. As parents struggle to be more available to their kids, new research on work and family schedules to be presented Friday at the meeting in Dallas includes a study that shows parents' availability is on the decline because more parents are in the workforce. Although parents today may be spending more time on child care, they are less available overall.Working parents who spend less time with their children should try to make sure the time they do spend is communicating with them, vs. doing the dishes or spending more time on themselves, Brandon says “The tradeoff is not necessarily taking away time from your kid,” he says, “You're taking away time from other things.”20.The first paragraph mainly intends to tell us that ________.A.technology lets parents work at homeB.parents are satisfied with their workC.technology makes our lives much easierD.the family time is not always satisfying21.We can learn from the third paragraph that ________.A.some families are not experiencing quality timeB.it's enough for parents to stay with their childrenC.parents enjoy engaging in workathome activitiesD.working hours at home can transform into quality time22.According to Brandon, the quality time means ________.A.just being around with childrenB.work time is separate from family timeC.spending interactive time with childrenD.letting the children do whatever they want to do23.The underlined sentence “This time with children pays off” means________.A.the time with children is of little valueB.the time with children costs quite a lotC.the time with children leads to good resultD.the time with children has a bad effect on them24.What will the author most probably talk about in the next part of the passage?A.How to spend more time at home.B.How to do the dishes in a proper way.C.How to spend more time in working at home.D.How to take away time in a much proper way.Ⅲ.短文填词I'd like to tell you something that I experienced in the City Park. 25.________ the afternoon of last Sunday, my friend and I were taking a walk along a river in the City Park 26.________ suddenly we heard a boy 27.________ (喊) for help in the river. Ⅳ.HOMEWORK1.Recite the new words in the text2.Do excrise 1.2附件1. The history of the national flag of the UKEnglish flag was created by King James Ⅵ of Scotland. In 1603, he became the King of England. He was the first king to unite England and Scotland. He combined England’s Red Cross of St. George with Scotland’s White Cross of St. Andrew. The White Cross of St. Andrew stood for patron saint(保护神)of Scotland, while the Red Cross of St. George stood for patron saint of England. This was the flag that flew above all the early English settlements in the new world. It was the most commonly used flag in the English colonies. In 1801 King George Ⅲ added to the flag the Cross of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. English flag was generally referred to as the “Union Jack”. The flag has remained the same.2. The custom and tradition of the UK“Ladies First” is a British custom, though it is less obs erved today than it used to be. The reason seems to be the fact that women are the equals of men in having the votes, taking paid jobs and receiving higher education, but there is still the feeling that they need protecting. It is still considered necessary to observe this tradition. In Britain, a man should let a woman go first, and protect her from traffic. On a bus, men should be initiative to give their seats to women, help women get on and off the bus. In a lift, a man should take off his cap when there is a woman. When going into or out of a room, men should be initiative to help women take off or put on their outerwear. When dining with a lady, a man should offer her a better seat so that she can easily overlook the outer door scene or view of the whole restaurant. At the very first meeting, men should be introduced to ladies first.3. The character of the BritishThe best-known quality of the British people and, in particular, of the English people is their exclusiveness. This means, “I am English. Y ou stay away from me. I am exclusive. I am quite happy to be myself. I do not need you. Leave me alone.” It is very difficult to know such a man who does not talk much, never says anything about himself, does not show much emotion and hardly ever gets excited. The English people are generally regarded as conservative. The Americans say that the English people always need 20 or 40 years to do things that they do today because the English people are so conservative that they have to wait for a long time before they are prepared to try something new. Englishmen think their way of doing things is always the best, and always the most normal. The right to privacy and personal freedom is unquestioned by the British. Perhaps it is the lack of space that has fostered and maintained their fierce individualism. There is a com mon saying among the British people, “My home is my castle. The wind can come in, but the Kings and Queens and human beings can never come in without my permission.”4. The climate in the UKIt is well-known that the English always go out with an umbrella or a raincoat. Why? It is because the weather in Britain often changes quickly. It is not very common for the same kind of weather to stay long.Spring can be rainy or windy, but the weather is getting warmer and you can expect more sunny days. In fact there can be as much sunshine in spring as in summer. May is very often a lovely warm month in many parts of Britain. Parks, gardens and the countryside are green and full of flowers, so people can have a lot of things to do and enjoy themselves outdoors at this time of a year.Summer is the most popular time for visitors to go to the seaside and other scenic spots. The weather can be sunny and pleasant. People usually have outdoor activitiessuch as swimming and outing.Autumn is a beautiful season, with tree leaves in the woods and parks changing to brown and red. It is a bumper crop season of agricultural plants. It is pleasant to be outside though the weather is constantly changing. It’s co ld in winter. It might snow, especially on high land in the north. Sometimes there are also storms and strong winds in the season.January and February are the coldest months of the year, while the warmest are often July and August. The difference in temperature between winter and summer is not so great. The average temperature for winter is about 4.5℃ and for summer about 15.5℃. How interesting it is!5. Buckingham PalaceThroughout the centuries, Britain’s kings and queens have built or bought palaces to serve as family homes, workplaces and centres of government.Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns (君主统治) since 1837. It evolved from a town house that was owned from the beginning of the eighteenth century by the Dukes of Buckingham. Today it is The Queen’s offic ial residence. Although in use for the many official events and receptions held by The Queen, areas of Buckingham Palace are opened to visitors on a regular basis. The State Rooms of the Palace are open to visitors during the Annual Summer Opening in August and September. The residences associated with today’s Royal Family are divided into the Occupied Royal Residences, which are held in trust for future generations, and the Private Estates which have been handed down to The Queen by earlier generations of the Royal Family.6. ScotlandScotland lies to the north England. The country has lots of mountains in the north, but the east coast is rather flat. There is little agriculture in the north and west. Although the farmers can keep sheep on the hills in summer, they also shoot wild deer for food. There are a good many lakes and rivers. Visitors go to Scotland for their holidays to catch fish; there are also a lot of fish farms.Scotland is famous for its engineers. In the past, people from Scotland traveled abroad to build bridges, railways and roads. Ships were built on the coast, too. Now, however, the work has changed. Many foreign companies have built factories in south Scotl and where they make computers. Most Scots speak “Scottish English”. They use many different words.Edinburgh has been called “the Athens of the North”. Like Rome, it was built on seven hills. It is one of the cultural centers of Europe. It may not have the summer sunshine of a Mediterranean city, but Scotland’s capital still draws lots of visitors from all over the world. The best place for a tourist to begin touring the city is probably Edinburgh Castle, which looks out over the city from the high Castle Rock. The Rock provides wonderful views of the city and the land around it. It is not difficult to see why this is the place where Edinburgh’s history began. The Royal Mile in Edinburgh is a row of historic streets that have some of the most beautiful ol d buildings in Europe. It runs from the Castle to one of Edinburgh’s other main buildings. Through the years, the city government has helped this area keep its traditional character.Today, Edinburgh is famous for biggest arts festival on Earth. The Edinburgh Festival, which begins in August every year, brings musicians, singers and dancers and theater groups from all over the world. Besides the formal performances, there is the Festival Fringe. For three weeks, Edinburgh’s streets are alive with fire-eaters and all kinds of strange and wonderful acts.7. A short history of IrelandThe island of Ireland is located off mainland Europe to the west and is part of a group of islands, which used to be known as the British Isles. But since the Irish Republic gained its independence in 1922, the term British and Ireland has come into use and is more as Cocles in the Republic. The English invaded Ireland in 1171 and ruled the country for centuries. Ireland became part of the United Kingdom in 1801, but it soon grew discontented, and for forty years the “Irish Question” was the great headach e of the British Parliament. In1845, a disease infected most of Ireland’s potatoes and caused a famine (饥荒) that lasted four years. More than one million Irish people died from starvation and disease. Another million or so left Ireland for countries like the US and Australia. The island is divided into two separate political entities, originally created in the 1920s. Covering three-quarters of the island, and containing twenty-six counties, the southern state officially became Republic of Ireland in 1949 some time after it became independent from the UK in 1922 (first called Eire). The remaining six-county state covering the northeast corner of the island is called Northern Ireland and is part of the UK.。

But an increasing number of Europeans are choosing to be so at an ever earlier age. This isn't the stuff of gloomy philosophical contemplations, but a fact of Europe's new economic landscape, embraced by sociologists, real-estate developers and ad executives alike. The shift away from family life to solo lifestyle, observes a French sociologist, is part of the “irresistible momentum of individualism” over the last century. The communications re volution, the shift from a business culture of stability to one of mobility and the mass entry of women into the workforce have greatly wreaked havoc on(扰乱) Europeans' private lives.Europe's new economic climate has largely fostered the trend towards independence. The current generation of home-aloners came of age during Europe's shift from social democracy to the sharper, more individualistic climate of American style capitalism. Raised in an era of privatization and increased consumer choice, today's tech-savvy(精通技术的) workers have embraced a free market in love as well as economics. Modern Europeans are rich enough to afford to live alone, and temperamentally independent enough to want to do so.Once upon a time, people who lived alone tended to be those on either side of marriage—twenty something professionals or widowed senior citizens. While pensioners, particularly elderly women, make up a large proportion of those living alone, the newest group of singles are high earners in their 30s and 40s who increasingly view living alone as a lifestyle choice. Living alone was conceived to be negative—dark and cold, while being together suggested warmth and light. But then came along the idea of singles. They were young, beautiful, and strong! Now, young people want to live alone. The booming economy means people are working harder than ever. And that doesn't leave much room for relationships. Pimpi Arroyo, a 35-year-old composer who lives alone in a house in Paris, says he hasn't got time to get lonely because he has too much wo rk. “I have deadlines which would make life with someone else fairly difficult.” Only an ideal woman would make him change his lifestyle, he says. Kaufmann, author of a recent book called The Single Woman and Prince Charming, thinks this fierce new individualism means that people expect more and more of mates, so relationships don't last long—if they start at all. Eppendorf, a blond Berliner with a deep tan, teaches grade school in the mornings. In the afternoon she sunbathes or sleeps, resting up for going dancing. Just shy of 50, she says she'd never have wanted to do what her mother did—give up a career to raise a family. Instead, “I've always done what I wanted to do: live a self-determined life.”11.More and more young Europeans remain single because ________.A.they are driven by an overwhelming sense of individualismB.they have entered the workforce at a much earlier ageC.they have embraced a business culture of stabilityD.they are pessimistic about their economic future12.What is said about European society in the passage?A.It has fostered the trend towards small families.B.It is getting closer to Americanstyle capitalism.C.It has limited consumer choice despite a free market.D.It is being threatened by irresistible privatization.13.According to Paragraph 3, the newest group of singles are ________.A.warm and light-heartedB.on either side of marriageC.negative and gloomyD.healthy and wealthy14.The author quotes Eppendorf to show that ________.A.some modern women prefer a life of individual freedomB.the family is no longer the basic unit of society in presentday EuropeC.some professional people have too much work to do to feel lonelyD.most Europeans conceive living a single life as unacceptable15.What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A.To review the impact of women becoming high earners.B.To contemplate the philosophy underlying individualism.C.To examine the trend of young people living alone.D.To stress the rebuilding of personal relationships.BAmericans often plan social gatherings on short notice,so don't be surprised if you get invited to someone's home or to see a movie or baseball game without much warning. If the time is convenient for you, surely accept their invitation. But if you're busy, don't be afraid to decline the invitation. Perhaps suggesting a time would be better.Your host won't be shamed.Invitations are usually sent in person or over the telephone. The main exception(例外)is for some formal occasions,in which case a written invitation will be mailed. You would normally receive a written invitation to a wedding(婚礼).For a casual dinner invitation, don't arrive more than 5 minutes early, because your host may still be preparing for your visit.Arriving more than 10 minutes late is considered rude if very few people were invited. If many people were invited,it's OK to arrive a little late, even as much as half an hour late. For example,it's OK to arrive late for a party, for a potluck(家常便饭)dinner or for a social gathering inviting a large group of people. If you're invited for dinner,it's proper to bring the host a bottle of wine,a gift basket of fruit,a box of candy,or a bouquet(束)of flowers.Don't bring roses,as men often give roses to women on a date.If you wish to thank the host for his or her hospitality(好客),it's right to call or send a brief written thank-you note the next day.16.The passage is to tell us________.A.how to accept Americans' invitationsB.something about American social visitsC.something about American business visitsD.how to make a living in America17.The underlined word “decline” in the first paragraph most probably means “________”.A.accept B.opposeC.refuse D.receive18.In America, invitations to a wedding are often sent ________.A.by mail B.by faxC.by email D.over the telephone19.If an American only invites you to his home for an informal supper at 7:30 pm, you'd better reach his house at ________.A.7:14 pm B.7:35 pmC.7:45 pm D.7:55 pm20.According to the passage,in America________.A.if you're invited to a family as a guest, you can stay as long as you pleaseB.if you're invited for a party, you must always be on timeC.if you're invited for dinner, you'd better bring some presentsD.you must make a call to show your thanks after you get home from the dinnerⅢ.基础写作以下是东江的基本信息及相关报道。

However, the southern part of Ireland was unwilling and broke away to form its own government.
So only Northern Ireland joined with England, Wales and Scotland to become the United Kingdom and this was shown to the world in a new flag called the Union Jack.
The greatest historical treasure of all is London with its museums, art collections, theatres, parks and buildings. It is the centre of national government and its administration. It has the oldest port built by the Romans in the first century AD, the oldest building begun by the Anglo-Saxons in the 1060s and the oldest castle constructed by later Norman rulers in 1066.
To their credit the four countries do work together in some areas but they still have very different institutions. For example, Northern Ireland, England and Scotland have different educational and legal systems as well as different football teams for competitions like the World Cup!

don’t overcome this anger,it can turn into bitterness (积怨).Bitterness can result when we can’t forgive someone who has hurt us or made us angry.Someone might say or do something that hurts us.But instead of working through the anger,we keep it deep inside. Before long,a bitter feeling begins to grow.Bitterness shows when we constantly criticize the one who hurts us.We may think we’re hurting that person, but we’re really only hurting ourselves.Bitterness is a harmful emotion that affects the whole body.It can lead to serious health problems such as high blood pressure.Bitterness can keep us from concentrating on important things. Finally, holding onto bitterness can hurt our relationships with friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an angry, negative person for very long.Author Chuck Swindoll once said,“Life is 10% what happens to us and 90% howwe respond to it.〞That means when someone hurts you, your response is more important than what happened. You can choose to let go of hurt,or you can hold onto it,which results in bitterness. If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to handle it.Instead of denying(否认) your anger, admit it to yourself. Then see your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.You may feel you have a right to be angry. You may think you’re right and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad.But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person.Bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life. The best thing you can do is forgive and forget. You probably can’t completely put the act out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person.Let it go and move on.You’ll enjoy better health and peace of mind.16.What will happen if we don’t release anger?A.We won’t put blame on others for no reason.B.A bitter feeling will develop in our mind.C.We will not be particular about what others do.D.We will always be criticized and hurt.17.What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?A.The physical effects of bitterness.B.The relationships hurt by bitterness.C.The negative effects of bitterness.D.A waste of time to hate others.18.The author advises us to do the following EXCEPT________.A.hold onto bitterness inside usB.forgive the one who hurts usC.deal with your anger properlyD.forget others’ rude behavior19.By forgiving others,we are able to________.A.prevent bad things from happeningB.be friends with the person who hurts usC.enjoy good health and a peaceful mindD.forget the bitter experience completely20.What is the text mainly about?A.The advantages of bitterness.B.The ways to dispel bitterness.C.The causes and effects of bitterness.D.Both B and C.BLast year college students in America spent an estimated$700 on textbooks on average. The National Association ofCollege Stores reported more than five billion dollars insales of textbooks and course materials. The association spokesman Charles Schmidt says electronic textbooks now just make up 2%~3% of sales. But he says that is expected to reach 10%~15% by 2012.Online versions(版本) are now available for many of the most popular college textbooks. An etextbook can cost ha lf the price of a new print textbook. But students usually lose access to them after the end of the term. And the books cannot be placed on more than one device(设备),so they are not easy to share. So what do students think of etextbooks?Administrators at Northwest Missouri State University wanted to find it out.Earlier this year they tested them with 500 students in 20 classes. The university is unusual. It provides laptop computers for all 7,000 of its fulltime students. It does not require students to buy th eir textbooks either. They rent them to save money. The school aims to save even more by moving to etextbooks. The students in the survey reported that downloading the books from the Internet was easy. They liked the idea of carrying lighter backpacks. And 56% said they were better able to find information. But most found that using etextbooks did not change their study habits. And 60% felt they read more when they were reading on paper. In all, almost half the students said they still liked physical textbooks better. But the survey found that cost could be a big influence.55% said they would chooseetextbooks if using them meant their
