I should have paid a man to do it, but foolishly confident in my driving ability, I decided to hire a lorry and drive it myself.Moving the lorry backward in my yard, I crashed into a small shed, causing permanent damage. Fortunately, I owned the shed. I loaded up with the furniture and set out. By now it was rush hour. My nerves broke down, as I drove the huge lorry through the streets nervously. At last I arrived at Charlotte Street and found an available parking space. I moved the lorry into it only to notice three people at a pavement cafe waving to me. I got out, trembling violently, like one who had justfinished a stormy Atlantic crossing. “You’ve hit the car parked behind you,” they said. I examined the car. There were white scratches on its front face. It bore a disabled sign. So, now I was a bad driver and a bad man. Under the severe look of the three, I left an apologetic note on the da maged car’s windscreen, giving my phone number.I unloaded the furniture, dripping the sweat, wanting only to escape from the monster. I drove it back to its base at Edgware. On arrival, the boss told me I must fill it up with petrol before returning it. “Just charge me,”I cried, still shaking with fear. He stared at me with understanding. No doubt he’d witnessed others in this state before. “How about I drive you to a petrol station, you fill up, and I drive it back?” he asked. He danced the great lorry through the traffic so carefully that it would have shamed me if I had not been so grateful.24.The man felt ______ to have delivered the furniture himself.A.grateful B.regretfulC.proud D.confident25.The man trembled violently because ______.A.he caused a terrible traffic accident B.driving the lorry was too difficult for himC.he was afraid to see the three people D.the furniture was too heavy for him26.The man said he was a bad man most probably because ______.A.he made the traffic accident on purposeB.he parked the big lorry on the pavementC.he shouldn’t have driven the lorry himselfD.he shouldn’t have caused trouble for the disabled27.The writer intended to suggest that ______.A.it was exciting to drive a lorry B.it was hard to avoid accidentsC.being too confident is foolish D.the boss was expert in drivingCDifferent contexts affect food production, processing, trade, marketing and consumption. As a result of this, the food availability, accessibility, and affordability— as well as cons umers’ dietary behaviour and nutritional status—vary. One possible picture is presented here to provide an idea on how COVID-19 might impact the global food system.Consumer demand plays a crucial role in food production and their demands depend on purchasing power and preference. Because of the lockdown, there is no work for many people. As a result, they do not have enough money to buy adequate food for their families. The closure of restaurants, school meals and tourism businesses may reduce the demand for fresh food. People buy frozen. dried and canned food with longer shelf life. Energy-dense, less nutritious foods are often more affordable than fresh and nutritious one.According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 is not likely to be transmitted through food. However, workers can get infected by each other if they do not maintain social distance properly. Shortage of labor can not only hamper food production, but also the processing of food.Around the world, millions of people depend on international trade either for then- livelihood or food security. The virus outbreak might slow down global trade and marketing of food. As a result, countries depending on imported food can face difficulties. The closure of ports and other supply restrictions will hamper food supply. The price of transferring food within and outside of the country may get more expensive. It means import may get more expensive and export may bring less money. On the other hand, the restriction in transport and supply can be the cause of food loss particularly for fresh fruits and vegetables. Companies may face difficulties to import the ingredients for different products which may disturb the production.28.The passage is mainly about ________.A.why the food system is easily affected by COVID-19B.how the world may be affected by COVID-19 outbreakC.what effect COVID-19 may have on the food systemD.what contexts affect food production29.How is consumers’ dietary behavior changing now?A.They are eating more fresh food. B.Inadequate ingredients.C.Increased processed food. D.Limited transport and supply.DIt was the first family ski weekend in Colorado. I was tired and considered quitting it. But I figured I should push through—if I skipped out, then the kids would think that they could too. After dropping the kids at ski school, my husband and I charted our course on the mountain map. Then, I pushed off and three minutes later, my right ski inverted (倒转的) and took my leg with it... I still remember hearing the crack.I was taken down the mountain in an ambulance. After surgery I woke up with my leg bandaged beyond recognition, my mouth dry and my mind confused. I wouldn’t walk for three months, optimistically. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t navigate the steps in our house. I couldn’t even shower on my own. I turned to Adam and asked, “How are we going to manage?” “We’ll figure it out,” Adam said. I nodded, because what was the alternative? But nowhere in any of my cells did I believe him. Not even a tiny bit.But something unexpected happened: my children learned to be both autonomous and empathetic. They ran up the steps each day after school to check on me. Without the luxury of my packing their lunches orensuring that their homework was filed, they learned to do it themselves. And my husband too! The man previously had to be told what to do and when to do it, and sometimes why too. When I went down on the mountain, he attended to my every need, as he said to me once, “After all the years that you did so much, it was my turn to show up.”Sometimes—many times—both in life and in marriage, you hope for the sunset overlooking the ocean off a deserted beach, but what you get is a drive to physical therapy. That’s OK. When I went down on that mountain, I worried that my injury would upend everything. It turns out that it did.32.What can be inferred about the mother before the accident?A.She enjoyed herself in the ski. 2020年高考英语阅读理解模拟试题及答案(4)

2020年高考英语阅读理解模拟试题及答案(4)(四)Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that man and animals possess if they are used. If fire didn’t hurt when it burned, children would play with ituntil their hands were burned away. Similarly, if painexisted but fear didn’t, a child could burn itself again and again because fear would not warn it to keep away from thefire that had burnt it before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soonkilled; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which man and animals might soon die out.In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of yourhouse because of the danger of being knocked down and killedin the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. The important thing is not to let fear rule you, but instead, to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear willwarn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.In many cases, you can take quick and successful actionto avoid the danger. For example, you see a car comingstraight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is well.In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent an airplane crashing into your house, and you may notwant to go and live in a desert where there are no airplanes. In this case, fear has given you its warning, you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of the particular danger is no longer of any use to you, and you have to try to overcome it.60. Children would play with fire until their hands are burnt away if _________.A. they were not well educated at schoolB. they had never played with fire beforeC. they had no sense of painD. they were fearful of pain61. People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding danger because _________.A. they have gained experienceB. they are warned of the danger and take quick actionC. they jump out of the way in timeD. they are calm in face of danger62. What is implied but not stated in the passage?A. Too much fear is harmfulB. Fear is always something helpfulC . Fear is something that can be avoidedD. Fear ought to be used as our guide in our life63. The best title for this passage should be __________.A. No Pains, No GainsB. Pain and ActionsC. The Value of Fear D . The Reason Why People Fear参考答案:60—63 CBAC。

A(2021·某某某某市·高三期末)Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career, since her first publication in 1968. In 1993, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris. And on Oct 8 she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature with the Nobel prizes first awarded in 1901.Gluck was honored “for her unmistakable poetic voice that, with plain beauty, makes individual existence universal”. Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from her life, “she is not to be regarded as a confessional poet (告白派诗人). Gluck seeks the universal,”Nobel mittee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement.Gluck, 77, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences into universal themes covering life, loss, and loneliness. Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be “dark”. However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. “It is straightforward and a voice full of humor and biting wit,”he said. For example, in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the ing of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressingpath only to reconnect with the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the “raw wind of the new world”as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck’s poetry, being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time. When her work Faithful Virtuous Night received a National Book Award for Poetry in 2014, a judge for the award went on to say, the collection es from “a world where darkness blurs (使模糊) ordinarily sharp edges around the oppositions of our lives-loss and renewal, male and female, the living and the dead”.Although she’s already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring pain and healing, Gluck did feel honored to be given the Nobel award. However, when asked what the prize means to her, the poet responded by saying, “It’s too new... I don’t know really what it means.”Her only hope is that she can continue her daily life.1.What can we know about Louise Gluck?A.Her first book was published in 1993.B.The Wild Iris won her the Nobel Prize in literature.C.She draws from her life experiences in her writing.D.She is seen as a successful confessional poet.2.What does Olsson think of Gluck’s poems?A.They focus on individual existence.B.They are too dark for readers. Italy’s national under-16 swimming championship was taking place in Genoa and the boys were going to pete there. 14-year-old Marco Sulis looked around for his teammates. Their coach sat near them. While preparing for take-off, the flight attendant began her routine safety briefing. Most of the passengers idled away the time engaging in chatting and eating. Although air crashes are alien to Marco, he, who perceived how vital the process was, would later remember all her words.During the flight, as earlier instructed, he located the nearest emergency exit and made a mental note of the red handle behind a protective plastic shield. T o open the door, one had to remove the plastic and pull the handle.Flanked by mountains to the north, the airport is often battered by strong winds. Flight 1553 was a short one. The sky that day was crystalline blue and visibility was perfect. At two minutes to touchdown, the plane rocked, which was later found to be out of mechanical faults. Soon, it touched down precariously on two wheels. The captain attempted to reduce the airplane’s speed by braking hard but it was no use. Slipping sideways, the plane rushed out into the sea at high speed.Tons of water poured into the cabin. Passengers were shouting and rushing towards the emergency exit door. Marco watched people struggle with the door fruitlessly.“Let me do it!”Marco yelled, leaping out of his seat.Marco smashed the clear plastic with the palm of his hand. He grabbed the handle and pulled, using all the strength in his body. The emergency exit door finally swung open. However, the emergency door pinned Marco’s leg down. Passengers passed Marco as they rushed out of the plane. Already soaking in water, Marco knew there was no time to waste. He pushed against the door as hard as he could and managed to free his leg. Marco exited from the plane finally and saw his coach and teammates bobbing in the waves. He began swimming towards the concrete pier(码头).The others followed. When they reached the pier, they were safe at last. Even though four people were killed in the accident, many more survived because of Marco. During one interview, she noticed that the candidate never made direct eye contact. She was puzzled and somewhat disappointed because she liked the individual otherwise. He had a perfect résumé and gave good responses to her questions, but the fact that he never looked her in the eye said “untrustwo rthy,〞so she decided to offer the job to her second choice.“It wasn’t until I attended a diversity workshop that I realized the person we passed over was the perfect person,〞Tiffany confesses. What she hadn’t known at the time of the interview was that the candidate’s “different〞behavior was simply a cultural misunderstanding. He was an Asian-American raised in a household where respect for those in authority was shown by averting (避开) your eyes.“I was just thrown off by the lack of eye contact; not realizing it was cultural,〞Tiffany says. “I missed out, but will not miss that opportunity again.〞Many of us have had similar encounters with behaviors we perceive as different. As the world becomes smaller and our workplaces more diverse, it is becoming essential to expand our understanding of others and to reexamine some of our false assumptions.Hire AdvantageAt a time when hiring qualified people is becoming more difficult, employers who can eliminate invalid biases (偏见) from the process have a distinct advantage. My company, Mindsets LLC, helps organizations and individuals see their own blind spots. A real estate recruiter we worked with illustrates the positive difference such training can make.“During my Mindsets coaching session, I was ta ught how to recruit a diversified workforce. I recruited people from different cultures and skill sets. The agents were able to utilize their full potential and experiences to build up the company. When the real estate market began to change, it was because we had a diverse agent pool that we were able to say in the real estate market much longer than others in the same profession.〞Blinded by GenderDale is an account executive who attended one of my workshops on supervising a diverse workforce. “Through one of the sessions, I discovered my personal bias,〞he recalls. “I learned I had not been looking at a person as a whole person, and being open to differences.〞In his case, the blindness was not about culture but rather gender.“I had a management pos ition open in my department; and the two finalists were a man and a woman. Had I not attended this workshop, I would have automatically assumed the man was the best candidate because the position required quite a bit of extensive travel. My reasoning would have been that even though both candidates were great and could have been successful in the position, I assumed the woman would have wanted to be home with her children and not travel.〞Dale’s assumptions are another example of the well-intentioned but in correct thinking that limits an organization’s ability to tap into the full potential of a diverse workforce.“I learned from the class that instead of imposing my gender biases into the situation, I needed to present the full range of duties, responsibilities and expectations to all candidates and allow them to make an informed decision.〞Dale credits the workshop, “because it helped me make decisions based on fairness.〞Year of the Know-It-AllDoug is another supervisor who attended one of my workshops. He recalls a major lesson learned from his own employee.“One of my most embarrassing moments was when I had a Chinese-American employee put in a request to take time off to celebrate Chinese New Year. In my ignorance, I assumed he had his dates wrong’, as the first of January had just passed. When I advised him of this, I gave him a tong talking-to about turning in requests early with the proper dates.“He patiently waited, then when I was done, he said he would like Chinese New Year off, not the We stern New Year. He explained politely that in his culture the new year did not begin January first, and that Chinese New Year, which is tied to the lunar cycle, is one of the most celebrated holidays on the Chinese calendar. Needless to say, I felt very embarrassed in assuming he had his dates mixed up. But I learned a great deal about assumptions, and that the timing of holidays varies considerably from culture to culture.“Attending the diversity workshop helped me realize how much I could learn by simp ly asking questions and creating dialogues with toy employees, rather than making assumptions and trying to be a know-it-all,〞Doug admits. “The biggest thing I took away from the workshop is learning how to be more ‘inclusive’ to differences.〞A Better Bottom LineAn open mind about diversity not only improves organizations internally, it is profitable as well. These comments from a customer service representative show how an inclusive attitude can improve sales. “Most of my customers speak English as a second language. One of the best things my company has done is to contract with a language service that offers translations over the phone. It wasn’t until my boss received Mindsets’ training that she was able to understand how important inclusiveness wa s to customer service. As a result, our customer base has increased.〞Once we start to see people as individuals, and discard the stereotypes, we can move positively toward inclusiveness for everyone. Diversity is about coming together and taking advantage of our differences and similarities. It is about building better communities and organizations that enhance us as individuals and reinforce our shared humanity. When we begin to question our assumptions and challenge what we think we have learned from our past, from the media, peers, family, friends, etc., we begin to realize that some of our conclusions are flawed(有缺陷的) or contrary to our fundamental values. We need to train ourselves to think differently, shift our mindsets and realize that diversity opens doors for all of us, creating opportunities in organizations and communities that benefit everyone.28. Tiffany’s misjudgment about the candidate stemmed from _______.A. racial stereotypesB. invalid personal biasC. cultural ignoranceD. emphasis on physical appearance29. What kind of organization is Mindsets LLC?A. A real estate agency.B. A personnel training company.C. A cultural exchange organization.D. A hi-tech company.30. After one of the workshops, account executive Dale realized that ____.A. he had hired the wrong personB. he could have done more for his companyC. he had not managed his workforce wellD. he must get rid of his gender bias31. What did Dale think of Mindsets LLC’s workshop?A. It was well-intentioned but poorly conducted.B. It tapped into the executives’ full potential.C. It helped him make fair decisions.D. It met participants’ diverse needs.DThat’s enough, kidsIt was a lovely day at the park and Stella Bianchi was enjoying the sunshine with her two children when a young boy, aged about four, approached her two-year-old son and pushed him to the ground.“I’d watched him for a little while and my son was the fourth or fifth child he’d shoved,〞she says.〞I went over to them, picked up my son, turned to the boy and s aid, firmly, ’No, we don’t push,〞What happened next was unexpected.“The boy’s mother ran toward me from across the park,〞Stella says,〞I thought she was coming over to apologize, but instead she started shouting at me for disciplining her child, All I did was let him know his behavior was unacceptable. Was I supposed to sit back while her kid did whatever he wanted, hurting other children in the process?〞Getting your own children to play nice is difficult enough. Dealing with other people’s children has become a minefield. In my house, jumping on the sofa is not allowed. In my sister’s house it’s encouraged. For her, it’s about kids being kids:〞If you can’t do it at three, when can you do it?〞Each of these philosophies is valid and, it has to be said, m y son loves visiting his aunt’s house. But I find myself saying “no〞a lot when her kids are over at mine. That’s OK between sisters but becomes dangerous territory when you’re talking to the children of friends or acquaintances.“Kids aren’t all raised th e same,〞agrees Professor Naomi White of Monash University.〞But there is still an idea that they’re the property of the parent. We see our children as an extension of ourselves, so if you’re saying that my child is be having inappropriately, then that’s so mehow a criticism of me.〞In those circumstances, it’s difficult to know whether to approach the child directly or the parent first. There are two schools of thought.“I’d go to the child first,〞says Andrew Fuller, author of Tricky Kids. Usually a quiet r eminder that ’we don’t do that here’ is enough. Kids nave finely tuned antennae (直觉) for how to behave in different settings.〞He points out bringing it up with the parent first may make them feel neglectful, which could cause problems. Of course, approaching the child first can bring its own headaches, too. This is why White recommends that you approach the parents first. Raise your concerns with the parents if they’re there and ask them to deal with it,〞she says.Asked how to approach a parent in this situation, psychologist Meredith Fuller answers:〞Explain your needs as well as stressing the importance of the friendship. Preface your remarks with something like: ’I know you’ll think I’m silly but in m y house I don’t want…’〞When it comes to situations wh ere you’re caring for another child, white is straightforward: “common sense must prevail. If things don’t go well, then have a chat.〞There’re a couple of new grey areas. Physical punishment, once accepted from any adult, is no longer appropriate. “A new set of considerations has come to the fore as part of the debate about how we handle children.〞For Andrew Fuller, the child-centric nature of our society has affected everyone:〞The rules are different now from when today’s parents were growing up,〞he sa ys, “Adults are scared of saying: ’don’t swear’, or asking a child to stand up on a bus. They’re worried that there will be conflict if they point these things out – either from older children, or their parents.〞He sees it as a loss of the sense of common public good and public courtesy (礼貌), and says that adults suffer form it as much as child.Meredith Fuller agrees: “A code of conduct is hard to create when you’re living in a world in which everyone is exhaustedfrom overwork and lack of sleep, and a world in which nice people are perceived to finish last.〞“it’s about what I’m doing and what I need,〞Andrew Fuller says. 〞the days when a kid came home from school and said, “I got into trouble〞. And dad said, ‘you probably deserved it’. Are over. Now the parents are charging up to the school to have a go at teachers.〞This jumping to our children’s defense is part of what fuels the “walking on eggshells〞feeling that surrounds our dealings with other people’s children. You know that if you remonstrate(劝诫) with the child, you’re going to have to deal with the parent. it’s admirable to be protective of our kids, but is it good?“Children have to learn to negotiate the world on their own, within reasonable boundaries,〞White says. “I suspect that it’s only cer tain sectors of the population doing the running to the school –better –educated parents are probably more likely to be too involved.〞White believes our notions of a more child-centred, it’s a way of talking about treating our children like commodities(商品). We’re centred on them but in ways that reflect positively on us. We treat them as objects whose appearance and achievements are something we can be proud of, rather than serve the best interests of the children.〞One way over-worked, under-resourced parents show commitment to their children is to leap to their defence. Back at the park, Bianchi’s intervention(干预) on her son’s behalf ended in an undignified exchange of insulting words with the other boy’s mother. As Bianchi approached the park bench where she’d been sitting, other mums came up to her and congratulated her on taking a stand. “Apparently the boy had a longstanding reputation for bad behaviour and his mum for even worse behaviour if h e was challenged.〞Andrew Fuller doesn’t believe that we should be afraid of dealing with other people’s kids. “look at kids that aren’t your own as a potential minefield,〞he says. He recommends that we don’t stay silent over inappropriate behaviour, particularly with regular visitors.32. What did Stella Bianchi expect the young boy’s mother to do when she talked to him?A. make an apologyB. come over to interveneC. discipline her own boyD. take her own boy away33. Hate.BOne day, when I was working as psychologist in England, an adolescent boy showed up in my office. It was David. He kept walking up and down restlessly, his face pale, and his hands shaking slightly. His head teacher had referred him to me. “This boy has lost his family,” he wrote. “He is understandably very sad and refuses to talk to others, and I’m very worried about him. Can you help?”I looked at David and showed him to a chair. How could I help him? There are problems psychology doesn’t have the answer to, and which no words can describe. Sometimes the best thing one can do is to listen openly and sympathetically. The first two times we met, David didn’t say a word. He sat there, only looking up to look at the children’s drawings on the wall behind me. I suggested we play a game of chess. He nodded. After that he played chess with me every Wednesday afternoon—in plete silence and without looking at me. It’s not easy to cheat in chess, but I admit I made sur e David won once or twice.Usually, he arrived earlier than agreed, took the chess board and pieces from the shelf and began setting them up before I even got a chance to sit down. It seemed as if he enjoyed my pany. But why did he never look at me?“Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with,” I thought. “Perhaps he senses that I respect his suffering.” Some months later, when we were playing chess, he looked up at me suddenly.“It’s your turn,” he said. After that day, David started talking. He got friends in school and Joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times, about his biking with some friends, and about his plan to get into university. Now he had really started to live his own life.Maybe I gave David something. But I also learned that one—without any word—can reach out to another person. Tuesday is actually the best day of the week if you want to grab a bargain, according to an exhaustive analysis of on—line shopping. Thursday is the second best day followed by Friday—but Sunday is when you are least likely to make a saving. The study also looked at months and found that the pre—Christmas rush in November is when there are most bargains around on the web—and not the January sales. US retailer(零售商) reporting service Sum All examined 3,000 panies and half a billion transactions(交易) as part of its report. It worked out the average discount(折扣) offered to consumers on each day of the week and over different times of the year. The best day of the week was Tuesday where savings were 4.81 percent, followed by Thursday on 4.80 percent. In third place was Friday at 4.65 percent, then Wednesday at 4.13 percent and Monday at 4.11 percent. Only the foolish would shop on a Saturday where thediscounts were typically 3.84 percent—and Sunday was the worst with 3.37 percent. The analysis by month is even more surprising as most people think that waiting until the post—Christmas sales would yield the biggest discounts. In fact, November is when you will get the largest savings at 5.99 percent on average. January came in second at 4.95 percent, followed by May at 4.50 percent. The worst month to buy online was March where you could expect to save just 2.76 percent. Consumers and experts have been speculating for years about the best time to shop online.Booking a flight has almost bee a science with some claiming that buying six weeks before you travel guarantees you the best price. However, a recent analysis by the US Airlines Reporting mission found that was not actually the case. Not only did the six—week window fail to pile up, in some cases the best fares were on sale as long as 24 weeks before departure. The ARC said that booking well in advance is best advised for busy routes or long haul flights(长途航班), as the price only tends to go up.28. If a buyer wants to buy cheap goods online, he’d better go to the shop on .A. TuesdayB. ThursdayC. FridayD. Sunday29. Most web sellers often provide bargain on the web .A. after New Year’s DayB. during Valentine’s DayC. on Mother’s DayD. before Christmas30. Which of the following statements is True according to the third paragraph?A. The best day of the week was Tuesday where savings were 4.8 percent.B. In third place was Thursday where savings were 4.65 percent.C. Sunday where the discounts were 3.37 percent was the worst.D. Customers can get the best sayings on Saturday.31. What is t he meaning of the underlined word “speculating” in the fifth paragraph?A. Quarrelling.B. Objecting.C. Searching.D. Considering.DIt is widely known that any English conversation begins with The Weather. Such a fixation with t he weather finds expression in Dr. Johnson’s famous ment that “when two English meet, their first talk is of weather.” Though Johnson’s observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago, most mentators fail to e up with a convincing explanation for this English weather—speak.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that, as the English weather is not at all exciting, the obsession with it can hardly be understood. He argues that “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weathe r is that there is not very much of it.” Simply, the reason is that the unusual and unpredictable weather is almost unknown in the British Isles.Jeremy Paxman, however, disagrees with Bryson, arguing that the English weather is by nature attractive. Bryson is wrong, he says, because the English preference for the weather has nothing to do with the natural phenomena. “The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty.” According to him. the weather in England is very changeable and uncer tain and it attracts the English as well as the outsider.Bryson and Paxman stand for mon misunderstanding about the weather—speak among the English. Both mentators, somehow, are missing the point. The English weather conversation is not really about the weather at all. English weather—speak is a system of signs, which is developed to help the speakers overe the natural reserve(内向) and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows conversations starting with weather—speak are not requests for weather data. Rather, they are routine greetings, conversation starters or the blank “fillers”. In other words, English weather—speak is a means of social bonding.32. The author mentions Dr. Johnson’s ment to show that .A. most mentators agree with Dr. JohnsonB. Dr. Johnson is famous for his weather observationC. the ment was accurate two hundred years agoD. English conversations usually start with the weather33. What does the underlined word “obsession” most probably refer to?A. A social trend.B. An strong interest.C. A historical concept.D. An unknown phenomenon.34. According to the passage, Jeremy Paxman believes that .A. Bill Bryson has little knowledge of the weatherB. there is nothing special about the English weatherC. the English weather attracts people to the British IslesD. English people talk about the weather for its uncertainty35. What is the author’s main purpose of writing the passage?A. To explain what English weather—speak is about.B. To analyse misconceptions about the English weather.C. To find fault with both Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman.D. To convince people that the English weather is changeable.第二部分:七选五(每小题2分, 满分10分) 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上写出答案。

But, we also know that resistance is important if we're ever going to find a workable middle ground with our phones ﹣ and a recent has served up another reason to strengthen our resolve. Here it is: when you pick up your phone while doing anything mentallychallenging, you're ________ your brain's ability to recharge and performance predictably decreases. That's the conclusion of a study that put roughly 400 college students to task solving challenging word puzzles. When they were about halfway through, the researchers allowed most of the students to take a break either using their phones, using a computer or reading a print circular. Other students were told to just keep on working without any sort of break. The results showed that the students who took a break with their phones were the worst performers of all the groups. They took 19% longer to finish the tasks and they solved 22% fewer word﹣problems than all the other groups combined. In fact, the cell﹣phonegroup's efficiency and processing speed was about the same as the group that took no break. We also overlooked the emotional connection we'd developed with our phones. It's no longer just a device. It's a companion."It is important to know the costs associated with reaching for this device during every spare minute, " Kurtzberg added. D Students have to complete word puzzles before the break..(4)What's the main idea of the Paragraph 6?________A The phone is no longer favored by people.B The phone is not as powerful as expected.C People cannot connect emotionally with phones.D People didn't fullyunderstand the effect of phones.二、七选五5. This year it lasted from May 14th to May 25th. 〞I was in complete shock when I got that phone call and that question if I wanted to be a member of the Cannes Jury , 〞 Fanning said during a press conference. As it turned out, it not only shocked the US actress, but also brought criticism from those who believed Fanning was too young compared to other veterans in the industry. But Fanning's acting experience was in fact a good argument for her jury membership. In fact, Fanning has been a Hollywood fixture for longer than you realize. The 21yearold has been in many big productions. She began acting in I AM Sam at age 3. With lead roles in movies like Super 8, We Bought a Zoo and Maleficent under her belt, she's appeared in 60 projects and is one of Hollywood's hottest young stars. Fanning's devotion to work numbers her among the few former child stars who continue to act as adults. In her latest movie Teen Spirit , which hit US cinemas last month, Fanning plays a pop singer. Since she had no singing experience, Fanning had to work with Grammy-winning music producer Marius de Vries for three months before the filming started. 〞I would go to his apartment and sing through all the songs every day , 〞 she said. 〞He videoed me and recorded me singing everything and made me watch it back again and again to improve my skills.〞With such rich acting experience and devotion to her art, Fanning certainly was able to 〞represent a new class in film〞 at the Cannes Film Festival.4.What does the underlined word 〞veterans〞 probably mean?A.Shocked actresses. This year's theme is 〞Check your hearing ! 〞 Many experts and health organizations, including those who pay attention to the hearingimpaired (听力受损的), are working to help people realize the importance of protecting their hearing and avoid hearing loss. When we talk about music, what kind of feelings does it bring? Excitement...and relaxation. But what if the music lasts for hours? We interviewed a group of musicians based in Beijing during the weekend. They all said that hours of exposure to loud music can cause discomfort. One added that band members like to play at maximum volume and forget the harm that loud music can cause. The same thing not only occurs to musicians. It's also not rare for daily users since listening to loud music on loud sound equipment has become a part of modern life. According to the WHO, the practice has put more than a billion people around the world, aged 12-35, at risk of losing their hearing. We also interviewed some headphone users in the street, and most of them said that they are not heavy users but admitted that they use headphones for hours on the subwayand in the office or home. It's easy for these people to gradually increase the volume without awareness, especially in a noisy environment. Often, headphone users fail to realize they're listening to audio at unsafe levels until serious hearing problems suddenly occur. There are many reasons for hearing loss , including loud acoustic(听觉的) sources, drug abuse, and diseases. Experts suggest frequent medical checks and prevention measures.Whether congenital(先天的) or acquired, loss of hearing is usually irreversible. 〞Once the hearing loss occurs, it's already too late to be changed back to what it was before , 〞said Yang Shiming, an expert of the Chinese PLA General Hospital. 〞Early prevention, early identification and early treatment. Your mind is in an endless circle playing what you said and did over and over again. You wish you had a time capsule(时间囊) to go back and make things change if you find mistakes. Youfear what others will think about you and that they will reject and dislike you. You seek to be socially perfect.Academically, you work long endless hours just to make those excellent marks. Although most would say 〞it's good to have high standards〞 , they have no idea about the internal hell you put yourself through to achieve perfection. If you don't achieve the desired goal you feel as though you have failed, but you're far from failing, you just don't see it that way. So instead you are telling yourself that you're stupid and not smart. The pressure you place on yourself weighs you down and you wear the 〞not good enough〞 label each and every day.You not only have high standards for yourself but you also have them for others. If people don't perform up to your expectations, then you think them incompetent. This causes a lot of frustration because you can't trust anyone to get things right. So instead of being a team player you fly solo(单飞) and try to do two or three jobs at once. Your unrealistic expectations cause you to criticize and judge others and that leads to problems in other areas of your life. The attempt to be perfect is called perfectionism and it's damaging our emotional and mental health. We strive for perfection with our body, in our performance, and in our relationships. In a society that overstates mistakes, is it any wonder that so many young people attempt the impossible task of being perfect? We all have flaws, fears and make mistakes, and that's perfectly OK. It's our imperfections that make life interesting and they help us grow into a stronger and more adaptable person. We don't have to be a stronger and more adaptable person. We don't have to strive to achieve the impossible goal. We are designed to be perfectly imperfect.12.Where is this text most likely from?A.A diary. B.A novel. C.A magazine. 2009高考英语阅读理解模拟训练(四)AYOU don’t need millions to be happy. In fact, at The Happiness Institute in Australia, a couple of hundred dollars may be enough. The institute opened its doors last year, and, since then, men and women of all ages have been paying A$200 an hour (US$140) for lessons on how to feel great.“You can actually increase your happiness levels. That’s what we teach,” said Timothy Sharp, founder of the institute.Experts say that only about 15 per cent of happiness comes from income, assets and other financial factors. As much as 85 per cent comes from things such as attitude, life control and relationships. Most of us are significantly better off financially than our parents and grandparents, but happiness levels haven’t changed to reflect that.Studies show that once the basic needs of shelter and food are met, additional wealth adds very little to happiness. Many decades ago, the “sage of Baltimore, Maryland”, editor HL Mencken, defined wealth as earning US$100 more than your “wife’s sister’s husband.”Behavioral economists now say part of the reason we are richer but not happier is because we compare ourselves to people better off materially.“The argument is that if you want to be happy there’s a very simple thing you can do: Compare yourself to people who are less well off than you — poorer, smaller house, car,” said Sharp. The Happiness Institute aims to show you how to overcome these unhappiness factors by focusing on “more than just your bank account.”“If I compare myself to Bill Gates then I’m always going to be down,”said Sharp.A better thing to compare with, he said, might be Kerry Packer, Australia’s richest person who has had a kidney transplant and heart surgery in recent years.1. Step 5CEvery day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us somequestions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends—you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you—loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease (not worried) but the situation is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard.8. When you speak to the class, you should speak ________.A. as slowly as possibleB. in a low voiceC. loudlyD. forcefully9. The main idea of this passage is _______.A. that we should talk in different ways in different situationsB. that we must speak loudlyC. that we must keep silent at any timeD. that we must talk with the classDThe first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, “Hi, girl! My name is Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug?”I laughed and enthusiastically(热情地)responded, “Of course you may!” and she gave me a giant squeeze.“Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?” I asked. She jokingly replied, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have a couple of children, and then retire and travel!”“No seriously,” I said. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.“I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!” she told me.Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our footballbanquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us.“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only two secrets to staying young, being happy, and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor everyday. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die!” she said.“There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn 20 years older. If I am 87 years old, and stay in bed for a year, and never do anything, I will turn 88. Anybody can grow older. But every minute counts for young men,” she added.“The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change. Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.”She concluded her speech by courageously singing “The Song of Rose”.
