But as lives grow busier—and waistlines grow larger—a number of health experts are calling for Americans to reduce their risk of cancer and other diseases by cooking at home more and eating out less.“When dining out, people are likely to gravitate towards all the wrong thing,” says Rachel Br andeis of the American Dietetic Association. “People take in 50% more fat and sodium when they eat out than when they cook at home. And they often miss out on fruits, vegetables and other vitamin-rich ‘powerhouse foods’ that may reduce the risk of cancer.”Nutritionists know it’s not easy to break old habits. Many people say they hardly have time to exercise, let alone fix dinner.Brandeis says her secret is organization. She cooks six nights a week, even though she and her husband both work. She spends 20 minutes thinking about a week’s worth of menus and writing a list. She shops just once a week. Brandeis says she chooses easy cooking methods, too. Since she is not quite good at cooking. The American Institute for Cancer Research has produced a guide f illed with tips like “Homemade for Health”. Melanie Polk, the institute’s director of nutrition education, says cooking at home has many advantages. It teaches children about nutrition as well as the importance of sharing housework. The 39-year-old homemaker Kirstin Kristinus of Washington, D.C. says cooking at home brings her family together. She also tries to reduce her family’s cancer risk by preparing every meal with many different kinds of food.“The only way to know that you are getting all the good things is to expose yourself to a wide variety of food,” says Steven Shiff, a doctor in New Jersey. “If you eat out at a restaurant, it’s a lot easier to choose unhealthful things.”However, “families don’t have to give up restaurants,” Shiff says. “It i s possible to eat healthfully if you eat outside the home. But it takes probably the same sort of planning that you would have to do to prepare meals at home.”8. What is worrying health experts?A. Americans are having a too busy life.B. Americans are getting fatter and fatter.C. Americans are eating out more and more.D. Americans are in greater danger of getting cancer.9. What does the underlined part “gravitate towards” in paragraph 2 mean?A. Care about.B. Forget about. 10. What is Melanie’s attitude towards cooking at home?A. Unclear.B. Positive.C. Worried.D. Doubtful.11. What can infer from Shiff that_____.A. eating out can be as healthy as at homeB. People should stop going to restaurantsC. Restaurants usually serve unhealthy foodD. Preparing meals at home is more meaningfulD“We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle!”Cigarette ends are everywhere—littering our streets and beaches—and for decades they’ve been thought of as “unrecyclable”. But a New Jersey based company, called TerraCycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette ends and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to recycle things that people normally consider impossible to reuse.Obviously it would be even better for the environment if everyone just stopped smoking, but the statistics show that although there has been an increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging, between 2000 and 2014, global sales of cigarettes increased by 8 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette ends are ending up as trash. Since most of our litter eventually ends up in waterways, cigarette ends can surely pollute the surrounding environment. “It only takes a single cigarette end to pollute a liter of water,” TerraCycle founder, Tom Szaky, said. “Animals can also mistake littered cigarette ends for food.”So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful? TerraCycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these, TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products. They’re now also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 80 percent of household waste that currently can’t be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get companies to provide money for the process. And so far, it’s working.“We haven’t found anything that we can’t recycle,” communications director of TerraCycle, Albe Zakes, said. “But with the amount and variety of packaging and litter in the world, we are always look ing for new waste streams to address.”12. What does TerraCycle intend to do?A. Search for recyclable materials for use.B. Deal with as many cigarette ends as possible.C. Produce new kinds of industrial plastic products.D. Recycle what used to be considered unrecyclable.13. The underlined word “trash” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.A. rubbishB. poisonC. disasterD. ruin英语试题 第5页(共8页) 英语试题 第6页(共8页)14. Martin writes eachchapter from the perspective of a specific character, providing a limited point of view for each section. The reader is able to understand the inner workings of the individual, but the reader is barred from a whole understanding of the text. The world he has created has magic, but there is much more than that. While magic exists, it exists on the edge, and the inner unrest of the characters is much more important. His work also has a level of realness that is astonishing in a work of fantasy. Characters are imperfect, andmany make questionable moral choices. In the end, however, Martin shows that both good and bad happen to both the people of high moral standard and the corrupt. He has made it clear that any character can die at any point, which has led to a lot of heartbreak from readers. In 2011, A Song of Ice and Fire became a television series titled Game of Thrones . Martin has been closelyinvolved with the production. It has currently run for seven seasons, and viewers anxiously await the eighth season to answer their questions from the season seven finale. His fans are also waiting for The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, the next books in the series, toanswer the questions Martin and the television show have not yet addressed. Martin, however, has no plans to rush. He has made it clear that he will continue to write the books while working on the television show and writing other novels. But how will the story continue? What is going to happen in Westeros, and more importantly: when are wegoing to find out? Martinis skill as a writer has kept readers and viewers spellbound. Many hope he will finish the next book before the next season of the show begins, but no one knows with Martin. He always keeps his readers guessing.4. Unknown.CAs the parent of two teenagers who have played multiple sports over the years, I’ve seen the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolutely cruel. I realizeHowever, when I think about the value of sports and why my kids continue to play sports teach kids lessons to become successful adults. Through sports, kids learn how to work in teams, how to take risk, how to challenge themselves to be better, and how to behave when they lose—and when they win.Whether kids play soccer, baseball, football, or cheer, they learn they are part of a team where one person depends on another. When my son plays baseball, he’s not the only one who needs to play well; he depends on his defense to make the plays in the field. When my daughter plays tennis, she depends on her partner to cut off the ball at the net and win the point, and the tennis team depends on each person in order to win the overall match. Sports also teach children to trust and respect the decisions of someone who understands how the entire team needs to work in order to succeed.Sadly, though, youth sports have suffered from the “winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing” attitude. They have become too much of a reflection of professional sports. Winning is a happy result, but the lessons from losing are even more important. When my daughter loses tennis match, her coach reminds her that you learn more from losing than from winning. Losing makes you focus on improving your skills and your strategy. We’re going to learn from our mistakes and not repeat them.I believe that participating in youth sports is much more than building a sound body winning a scholarship to college. Sports are the best way to shape and build more self-motivate and happier children and help them become more self-motivated and happier adults.8. What is the authors attitude to youth sports?A. Critical.B. Positive.C. Doubtful.D. Unclear.9. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A. What sports the author’s kids take.B. What the authors kids do in sports.C. How sports benefit the authors kids.D. How the authors kids continue to play sports.10. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean?A. Teenagers don’t have to win every time.B. Winning is the only goal for teen players.C. Teenagers should work together to succeed.D. Winning is not the most important in sports.11. What is the best title for the text?A. Youth Sports Build Better AdultsB. Teenagers Suffer from Youth SportsC. Losing Brings More than Winning DoesD. Teenagers Perform Better than Adults in SportsDNowadays, social media like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter are becoming increasingly popular. People have completely made social media part of their daily lives. As a result, many people have developed an Internet personality. The Internet personality I am talking about is the one we shape on our social media sites. We are always posting information about ourselves for other people to know even when it can be completely untrue. Some people even go so far as to spend money in buying flowers or “likes” or buying a very expensive camera for their friends to take photos of them. I find it unbelievable. The time and energy spent on these silly things can only make us want to be accepted by more people.Social media are also a modern cause of depression: People see the perfect lives of others and consider their own imperfect lives as bad. Ev en kids deal with this. They don’t realize that the reason why they struggle to love themselves is that they spend all day receiving untrue information.I find that many people spend more time and energy in making sure that their online personality is worth accepting than caring for their real presence. So many times I have seen confident and beautiful girls on social media. But in the real world, they are extremely shy. They hardly talk to anyone and spend all their time using the phone.Social media have gone so far as to even negatively affect marriages. This is because of the fact that there are now “Instagram husbands”—people whose use is to take perfect photos of their partners throughout the day. They spend a lot of time doing that whether they like it or not. Needless to say, social media likely influence relationships in a negative way.I think everyone should not use social media at least for a few months to experience the difference it makes to them. They may find life is very different and much better.12. What does “the Internet personality” in the passage refer to?英语试题 第5页(共8页) 英语试题 第6页(共8页)A. The hope to develop a better personality.B. AMy Favourite Travel BooksThe Old Patagonian Express by Paul TherouxChoosing my favorite Paul Theroux book is like picking my favorite place in the world: It’s impossible to settle on just one. But The Old Patag onian Express, which is about a train journey Theroux made from Boston , USA to southern Argentina, is right up there at the top of my list. Theroux has a wicked sense of humor. He brings so much wisdom and experience to his travels.Walden by Henry David ThoreauIf he were alive today, Thoreau would probably frown if he heard so meone refer to Walden as a travel book. But I regard it as a travel-writing masterpiece. I went into the woods, he writes, because I wished to live delib erately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not l ived. That’s the same spirit of discovery that defines so many great contem porary travel records. The Dharma Bums by Jack KerouacLike so many people, I fell in love with Kerouac’s novels in my lat e teens and early 20s. On the Road gets all the press, but I always love Th e Dharma Bums. Kerouac beautifully captures the romance of California train s, Berkeley, and backpacking in the Sierras. It’s hard to read this book wit hout wanting to leave for the mountains to brainstorm bad haikus on the trai l and cook canned macaroni and cheese over a crackling campfire.Confucius Lives Next Door by T. R. ReidThis is sort of A Year in Provence in Japan, only the cross-cultural d ifferences are much greater. As a graduation gift to himself, he decided to work as a volunteer teacher in a distant village in Tibet.Cai, a student at Huan Railway Professional Technology College, at fi rst planned to cycle from Sichuan to Tibet. It turned out cycling on a platea u(高原) was quite difficult. And it has kept changing his opinion on life. Ca i’s hands even became painful while cycling up a 5008-meter-high mountain, where temperatures often dropped to 18 below zero. At night, the ice cover ed the road and he fell off his bike three times. Little oxygen made him fee l sick and weak. “At the most serious moment, I felt that was on the line,”said Cai.However, he also gained something unexpected. At Ya’an, a city in Sichuan, he met a group of tourists who are also university students. A girl called Wu Ling told him that she planned to work as a volunteer in a prima ry school in Tibet after her journey. He was impressed by the idea as she lo oked weak.It was not until he reached a family-run hotel in Shigatse that Cai’s spirits began to rise. The hotel manager’s two daughters enjoyed talking wit h him. The kids asked about his experiences on his trip, and showed him th e beautiful local lakes. “They told me that they always liked to talk to gues ts, as they wanted to improve their Mandarin,”he said, “Their parents and many locals can only speak Tibetan.”Cai was moved by the girls’story. Their situation is worse and the l ocal people have little chance to learn Mandarin because the schools are sho rt of teacher. “1 want to do something to improve the situation for kids lik e them,”said Cai. His parents finally gave their agreement and his teachers also supported him.4. What is Cai Kaiyuan’s graduation gift?A. Cycling from Sichuan to Tibet.B. Receiving m oney for a house.C. The purpose of writing this passage is to .A. tell us about an unusual graduation giftB. introduce a dangerous journey to usC. give advice on how to travel to TibetD. encourage us to be a teacher in TibetCCalorie(卡路里)counts are everywhere. They appear on restaurant menu s, milk boxes and bags of baby carrots. Grocery stores display lots of foods packaged with bright and colorful “low-calorie”claims.A calorie is the measure of stored energy in something---energy that c an be released as heat when burned. The term calorie on food labels is shor t for kilocalorie. A kilocalorie is the amount of energy it takes to raise the t emperature of one kilogram of water by 1 degree Celsius. But what does bo iling water have to do with your body’s release of energy from food? After all, your body doesn’t start boiling after eating. It does, however, chemical ly break down food into sugars. The body then releases the energy to fuel p rocesses and activities throughout each hour of the day.Food contains three main types of nutrients that deliver energy: fats, proteins and carbs(碳水化合物). A process called metabolism(新陈代谢) first cuts these into small pieces; Proteins break down into amino acids(氨基酸), f ats into fatty acids and carbs into simple sugars. Then, the body uses oxyge n to break down these materials to release heat. Most of this energy goes toward powering the heart, lungs, brain and other vital processes. Exercise and other activities also use energy. If energy -rich nutrients aren’t used right away, your body will hoard them---first in t he liver(肝脏), and then later as body fat.In general, someone should eat the same amount of energy each day as his or her body will use. If the balance is off, they will win lose or gain weight. It’s very easy to eat more calories than the body needs. Having t wo 200-calorie donuts in addition to regular meals could easily put teens ov er their daily needs. At the same time, it’s nearly impossible to balance ove reating with extra exercise. Running a mile burns just 100 calories. Knowing how many calories are in the food we eat can help keep the energy in and out balanced.8. How much energy does it need to lift the temperature of 5 kilograms of water by 10 degree Celsius?A. One kilocalorie.B. Five kilocalories.C. Ten kilocalories.D. Fifty kilocalories.9. It’s really difficult to control our weight.C. It is important to control the calories we take.D. It is good for our body to eat the same type of nutrients.DHe wrote that the “human mind is capable of excitement without the application of unpleasant and violent stimulants (刺激物)”. And it appears t hat simply reading these words by William Wordsworth proves his point.Researchers at the University of Liverpool found the writing of Shake speare and Wordsworth and the like had a beneficial effect on the mind, ma king it active and excited by catching the reader’s attention and leading to moments of self-reflection.Using scanners, they monitored the brain activity of volunteers as they read pieces of classical English literature both in their original form and in a modern translation. And according to the Sunday Telegraph, the experime nt showed the more challenging writing and poetry set off far more electrical activity in the brain than the simple readings. The research also found poetry, in particular, increased activity in the right brain, an area concerned with “autobiographical memory”, which help ed the readers to reflect on their own experiences in light of what they hadread. The academics said this meant the classics were more useful than self-help books. The brain responses of 30 volunteers were monitored in the first part of the research as they read Shakespeare in its original and modern form. In one example, volunteers read a line from King Lear, “A father and a graci ous aged man: him have you madded”, before reading the simpler, “A fath er and a gracious aged man: him you have enraged”. Shakespeare’s use of the adjective “mad”as a verb caused a higher level of brain activity than the straightforward version. The next part of the research is looking at the extent to which poetry can affect psychology and provide benefit. V olunteers’brains were scanned while reading four lines by Wordsworth, and four “translated”lines were a lso provided. The result showed that the first version caused a greater degree of brain activity.“Poetry is not just a matter of style. It is a matter of deep versions of experience that add the emotional and biographical to the cognitive (认知的),”said Professor Davis, leader of the researchers.12. The words by William Wordsworth in Paragraph 1 are used to.A. prove the poet’s pointB. introduce the to picC. serve as an exampleD. stress the importan ce of reading13. What is the beneficial effect of reading classics on the mind?A. It excites the reader’s mind.B. It reflects the read er’s experience.C. It catches the reader’s attention.D. It monitors the reader’s brain activity.14.What method is mainly used in the experiment?A. Comparing responses.B. Analyzing data.C. Observing activities.D. Testing ability.15. What may Jack Kerouacs be?A. Director of the Amtrak Writer’s Residenc yB. A sportsman devoted to rail-surfingC. An applicant of the programD. A famous writerBVolunteering abroad comes with a bit of a social stigma (耻辱). From my experience, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Volunteering isn’t so expensive that it’s only a choice for the well-off. I spent 10 weeks volunteering in Arizona with America Conservation Experience(ACE), helping preserve America’s natural beauty. The trip was arranged through BUNAC, a work and volunteer organization. In all it cost me around $ 1,000 —a sum which I covered mostly by working part-time.The self-indulgent(放纵自己的)image is relevant to overseas volunteer projects. However, the work can be hard-going. I spent my time maintaining trails, building fences and carrying out projects in some of the national monuments of America. Summer temperatures in Arizona stay well above 35℃, never pleasant if you’re carrying 50kg of concrete for 10 hours at a time. And then there was the wildlife to deal with, which improved my strength of character and made my fear of the English household spider disappear. What do most people volunteer for? Probably they want to give back things to the world. But in reality, you benefit just as much as the local communities and ecosystems you’re helping.Spendin g 10 weeks in America’s most beautiful national parks and forests was unforgettable. I gained a far deeper understanding of the local environment than the average tourist, meeting ex-national park rangers(护林者) who knew perfectly of the area’s history and e cosystem. But best of all, my 10 weeks were spent volunteering with young people from a mix of cultures —from Belgians to South Koreans. When I left Arizona, I returned home having made a life-long bond with the people from around the world.4. From his experience, the author has realized ______________.A. volunteering abroad gives you a bit of social stigmaB. people with average income can do volunteering work abroadC. volunteering can help preserve natural beautyD. volunteering will teach you how to find the truth5. How did the author afford his trip?A. With the help of BUNAC.B. With the support of America Conservation Experience.C. By working for BUNAC.D. By doing part-time jobs.6. While volunteering abroad, the author___________.A. lived in pleasant temperatures in ArizonaB. built national monuments in AmericaC. in fact benefited a lotD. mainly intended to give back things to the world7. What’s the best part of doing volunteer ing work abroad for the author?A. Building up his strength.B. Overcoming the fear of wildlife.C. Having an understanding of the ecosystem.D. Making the acquaintance with the people from different backgrounds.CEating spicy foods frequently may be tied to a slightly lower risk of an earlier death, according to a new study. However, more research is needed to confirm the link, experts say.The researchers found that the people in the study who ate spicy foods one or two days a week were 10 percent less likely to die during the study, compared with those who ate spicy foods less than once a week, according to the study published today(Aug. 4) in the journal The BMJ. Moreover, the people in the study who ate spicy foods three or more days a week were 14 percent less likely to die during the study, compared with those who ate spicy foods less than once a week. However, the study was observational, and so it is too early to tell whether there is a causal relationship between eating spicy food and lower mortality, said study author Lu Qi, an associate professor at Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts. "We definitely need more data from other populations," Qi told Live Science. “The researchers don't know why exactly the consumption of spicy food may be linked to lower mortality, but previous research on cells and animals has suggested several possible mechanisms,” Qi said.“It is unclear whether the observed associations are the direct result of spicy food intake, or whether spicy foods are simply a marker for other beneficial but unmeasured dietary components(成分),” said Nita Forouhi, a nutritional expect. At this point, researchers don't know for sure whether eating spicy foods can have a beneficial effect on human health and mortality, Forouhi wrote. "Future research is needed to make sure whether spicy food consumption has the potential to improve health and reduce mortality directly, or if it is merely a marker of other dietary and lifestyle factors," she said. 8. They scored higher in tests at the age of 5,but children whose first year at school was stimulati ng(使人兴奋的)outstripped them years later. The findings suggest that the government's structured approach to ear ly-years learning could be storing up problems for children. They also raise serious questions about the plan for all children to be able to read by the a ge of 6.In many countries formal teaching does not start until children are 6 or 7 and have improved their social and manual skills. Children start learning to read and write at 6 in the United States, France and Germany, and at7 Finland and Sweden.Professor Katz said that in many schools the courses were"boring ch ildren to tears". Much academic teaching required children to learn by me morizing pieces of information out of context, she said. Teaching in receptio n class should instead allow children to develop their intellect by exploring t heir environments and asking questions."Research suggests the benefits of formal academic instruction for fo ur and five-year-olds seem to be promising when they are tested early, but c onsiderably less so in the long term. When these children arc followed over a period of three or more years, those who had early experience in more int ellectually engaging curricula were more likely to do well in school than the ir peers, who had received early academic instruction. Surprisingly, these people live largel y by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. Howeve r, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unkno wn, thus making them into an interesting area of"lawlessness"in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the eff ects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2021 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne."I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worke d there on and off for almost ten years,"says Gin."I've been able to kee p firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to th eir living environment. I don't see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.""I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,"continues Gin."I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly."His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time.
