Girls are interested these days in the question of paying for outings when with a boy. Often girls today 21 as much or more than the boy they go out with. There is no reason why a girl earning money should neither pay a 22 of expenses nor take a 23 at paying the bill. We are moving towards equal pay for equal work, and it seems unreasonable to 24 the boy always to pay for two. People have a fear of appearing ungenerous, and often the less 25 they have the 26 they feel in that way. A boy finds it difficult to invite a girl to a show of a dance and then ask her to pay, but there is no reason why a girl should not 27 to pay her share. Or she could pay for the seats next time and invite the boy to come, though this is not so simple. While we accept the fact that a girl may refuse an invitation from a boy, I think her 28 might suffer more than a boy’s if a boy 29 an invitation from her. And a boy might find it hard to refuse a girl’s invitation even if he wished to do so. Anyhow, I think we have to get used to the idea of equality in 30 if we have equality in earning.

Family stories are amazing to me. You hear of family members long ago and by hearing about their stories, you can find timeless wisdom that can apply to your own life.
I’ll n ever forget the story my mom told me about Grandma. Grandma cooked for a crew of 24 farmhands so most of her days were taken up cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner for a bunch of (一群) loud complaining men coming in from hunting or farming. She took care of five children as well so her house was a busy little place, but where you would find Grandma the most
would be in front of her stove, stirring (搅拌) a pot of something.
The kids would run in and she’d give them a hug and then she’d go back to stirring. Th e men would come in and clean up all the biscuits and bacon and then she’d start on the next meal, once again standing and stirring at the stove. They’d tell her how wonderful her food was and then pour out their troubles to her as she listened and stirred.
One time Ruth watched as the farmhands ate quickly and went back out to work, hearing all of them grumbling about their lives. Then one by one the children came in to tell Grandma their own worries. She would smile, give them some kind of advice, and keep stirring. Ruth watched sitting at the table and when everyone left she said,“Mother. How can you just sit there and stir? Everyone tells you how bad their life is and you just smile and stir? Why don’t you just tell them that you’ve had enough and you can’t take anymore? Do something … Stop stirring!”Grandma looked up at Ruth and smiled … and kept stirring.
“Ruth, don’t you know that the stirring is very important? You see, when I’m stirring I’m putting all my thoughts and dreams into that pot. As everyone comes in and tells me about their life I put the love and positive thoughts into my pot and stir. Then when they eat it they have been given a pot full o hope. If we have any kind of problems I envision (想象) a solution and put it in my pot and stir. My stirring is what keeps me focused on what is good in the world. So instead of worrying about all that is around me I keep stirring knowing that all is well.”

One type of South American ant is spreading around the world and is living in huge super-colonies. Not only that, but these natural fighters seem to know they are family, according to the latest scientific findings.
Over the years, the light brown Argentine ant has moved to other parts of the globe, possibly by hiding in people’s suitcases and in cargo (货物). This hasn’t always been a good thing since the insects can destroy local plants and affect what animals in that area eat.
Ants are fierce fighters. They protect their territory (领地) from outsiders, including other types of ants and insects. But Argentine ants, though they live on separate continents, are rather friendly towards each other when they come together, scientists say.
There are three known super-colonies of Argentine ants. In Europe, one super-colony is located along the Mediterranean Sea. It is believed to be 3,700 miles long. Another super-colony is located in California. It covers about 560 miles. The third super-colony is on the west coast of Japan.
Scientists have discovered that the insects in the three super-colonies share similar chemical composition (成分). This helps them recognize one another. To prove this, the scientists matched each super-colony with ants from a different colony in a similar part of the world. The Mediterranean ant colony couldn’t get alo ng with a smaller one from Spain. And the ants from the west coast of Japan couldn’t get along with those from another area in Japan. But when the ants from the three super-colonies came together, they acted like old friends, greeting each other by rubbing antennae (摩擦触角) to say hello.
The scientists think that the Argentine ant super-colonies are one big family. Because they have similar chemical composition, the scientists believe they are genetically related. The ants recognize each other by the chemical composition of their outer shells.
46. How does the Argentine ant probably spread to other places?

第四部分
第一节基础写作
I’m Zhang Ming, a student from Class 3 Grade 2, Xinhua Senior High School, and I will become busier with my studies next term to prepare for the coming college entrance examination. To be honest, we need some free time to relax ourselves instead of studying hard all day long, especially at the weekends and on holiday, which is of great help for us to study effectively. In addition, I want to take part in some sports and games in my spare time at school, which can help us to keep healthy. As for the group activities, I’d like to get the chance to attend some amusing parties held by our class or school.
第二节读写任务
Jack has trouble with heavy second-hand smoke in his line of work, hesitating about whether to give up his complaint about passive smoking for a good relation with other people or to change
his job for good health.
It is harmful for people to work in the places with strong tobacco fumes. In fact, second-hand smoke is more harmful to people’s health because two thirds of the smoke will be taken in by those who are around the smokers.
In my opinion, Jack should take steps to protect himself. First, discuss this matter with other workmates and make sure that they have the same trouble with him. Second, talk with the person who is in charge of the factory in terms of this point, and try to persuade him or her to make some rules. If neither of these works, maybe finding another job would be a wise choice for his health.。
