Unit 4 Body language**阅读理解Illegally traded endangered species that escape, forming secondary populations, offer hope to their long-term survival, a study suggests. "This first came to my attention when I read a news story about the seizure of an illegal shipment of 23 yellow crested cockatoos(小葵花凤头鹦鹉)," said Luke Gibson, a college teacher. He learned that the species was critically endangered, which surprised him. This encouraged Dr. Gibson and his colleague to investigate(调查)how a critically endangered species had become self-sustaining outside of its natural range. They discovered 49 cases of a globally threatened species becoming established as a separate population, which they hadn’t thought of, including the yellow-crested cockatoo in their city."This is a species which is primarily threatened by wildlife trade," he told BBC News. "Poachers(偷猎者)go out into the forest in its native range in eastern Indonesia and capture the bird and then ship them off, usually up to our city where there is a strong demand for pet birds. This is what has fueled the decline of this species in its native range. But it's really interesting because that same cause also had another effect: some of the people who were keeping this species here accidentally or intentionally r eleased them.” As a result of enough of the birds set free, it allowed a new self-sustaining population to be established in this city. The government in of Dr. Gibson’s city has made it illegal to capture the species, even though it is a non-native species. Because the city is affluent and relatively well educated, the cases of people breaking the law are extremely rare, explained Dr Gibson, unlike in its native range in Indonesia, where capturing birds forms a major source of income. However, there can be downsides(缺点) to the newly established population of endangered species, such as a limited genetic pool, and suffering from novel diseases. It did also present a possible “very interesting” opportunity for conservationists, Dr. Gibson suggested. This would involve "harvesting" some of the newly established secondary population, which may provide a way to help slow global biodiversity loss.1.What was beyond Gibson’s expectations according to the first paragraph?A. The high rate of wildlife trade.B. The preciousness of the birds.C. The fact that the birds nearly disappear.D. The news that the birds were poached.2.What happened unexpectedly when the birds were shipped abroad?A. They formed a separate population.B. They were kept as pet birds.C. They were traded illegally.D. They were killed for research.3.Which can replace the underlined word “affluent”?A. Peace-loving.B. Rich.C. Free.D. Environment –friendly.4.For what purpose did the author write the passage?A. To appeal to everyone to stop the wildlife trade.B. To explain the challenge the wild birds are facing.C. To introduce a creative approach to wildlife conservation.D. To raise people’s awareness of protecting endangered species.【文章大意】本文为说明文。

A massive winter storm is expected to begin hitting Massachusetts tonight, dumping up to a foot or more of snow in some areas, while whipping the coast with powerful winds and driving rains, forecasters predict.“It’s got a little bit of everything,” William Babcock, a meteorologist(气象学家) at the National Weather Service in Taunton, said of the postChristmas storm that brought snowstorm conditions to the Ohio Valley before heading east with its mixed bag of snow, sleet, and rain.State Highway Administrator Frank De Paola said more than 4,000 states and snowplows(扫雪车) and salt spreaders were ready to make the roads safer for holiday travelers.“MassDOT will be fully staffed and will be ready to handle this,” De Paola said, nothing that the storm, which should bring snow to most of the state except the Cape and Island before turning into rain tomorrow, is Massachusetts’ first significant snowstorm of this winter season.“There have been events where we have had pretty much freezing, icing concerns, which we have treated with chemicals. But this is the first big event that will call for plowing(清街上的雪),” he said.A high wind watch has been issued for southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod. Forecasters say the wind could reach 60 mph, possibly bringing down power lines. In Worcester, some were busy for severe weather by buying rock salt, shovels and windshield wash, Barrows Hardware president Brain Barrow said. He called the volume(总量) of customers at his Webster Street store ver y steady on Wednesday morning. “You do get that supermarket effect for sure,” he said of shoppers stocking supplies before a storm. There were no flight delays or cancellations at Logan International Airport in Boston as of day. “Right now, everything’s ru nning normally,” airport spokesman Richard Walsh said. But Walsh said as the day progressed, travelers should contact their airlines directly to check the status of their flights.【解题导语】一场大的暴风雪即将席卷马萨诸塞州,但无论是气象学家、路政人员、普通市民还是超市等都对此次恶劣天气作好了各方面的准备和应对工作。

必修4 Unit 4 Body language李仕才一、阅读理解AThe biggest challenge faced by travelers especially those who like to have a backpacking trip is how to ensure a steady supply of clean clothes. Now, thanks to a great invention called the Scrubba Wash Bag, that worry may be a thine of the past. The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while he was planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he quitted his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag's design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light. Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage with his invention —dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Bag solves that problem. In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two or three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What's even more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time. The best part is that the 99dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it's not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Bag, wandering through foreign cities, searching for a laundry, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了Scrubba Wash Bag的产生背景和功能。

Dictionary cautions against confusing it with hugge—another word of the Middle English ug,meaning “to inspire w ith fear or disgust”.Nevertheless,I find myself drawn to the possibility that hug does,in fact, have some connection with ug.It seems to me that at the thought of a tight embrace (拥抱),fear and disgust do come to mind.So why is it that when I go over to your house for dinner, you wrap your arms around me,even though I saw you last Friday at the movies? One arm or two?Should there be space between us?Should I brush my cheek against yours?Maybe even kiss your cheek?I’m willing to believe that some people really love to hug. They rush to enfold not only family and friends but also friends of friends and near strangers. They delight in applying pressure and rocking from side to side.Yet most people are just going through the motions;they’re looking for a way to say hello or goodbye. Not wanting to seem rude,I open my arms, too, submitting to the ceremony of friendship. After one particularly confusing interaction,I looked for advice from experts.Emily Yoffe,an advice columnist, offered her sympathy:“I’m with you on this, but I’ve become a nonhugger who hugs.Recently after breakfast with a new friend,I went in to hug her goodbye, and I could see a kind of horror in her eyes, but it was too late to back off.” That’s me:The girl with the look of horror in her eyes. The Emily Post Institute, which specializes in manners, explains that when greeting someone, you should look him or her in the eyes and smile, speak clearly, add a “glad to see you” and then shake hands with a firm grip, pump two or three times, and then release. The institute suggests adding a hug “if it’s a relative or close friend”.Not any specific information on what a proper hug involves. There are several hug alternatives, among them:the handshake, the cheek kiss, the wave, the arm squeeze, and the nod.Handshakes seem formal, cheek kisses unAmerican.Arm squeezing would be a good solution if it were not for the danger of getting pulled into something more fullbodied. The nod, though, can be very effective when combined with a smile, especially when executed with confidence and with one hand already grasping the door handle.1.What do the first two paragraphs indicate about “hug”?A.The word causes common disfavor.B.The behavior appears disgusting.C.The action is somewhat confusing.D.The manner is unsuitable for friends.2.About the way of embrace, the experts________.A.have a standard conceptB.feel embarrassed and uneasyC.advise people to use other waysD.fail to give an explicit definition3.What’s the author’s attitude towards hug?A.Cautious. B.Hesitant.C.Puzzled. D.Opposed.4.What does the passage mainly discuss?A.Indepth research into hug.B.Specialized opinions on daily manners.C.Appropriateness of daily manners.D.Important reform of greeting manners.Ⅵ.书面表达假如你是李华,对2019年一月出现的严重雾霾记忆犹新,认为绿色生活方式对于改善空气质量十分有益。

A new study has found the amount of antibiotics(抗生素)given to farm animals is expected to increase by twothirds over the next 15 years.Researchers are linking the growing dependence on the drugs to the increasing need for meat, milk and eggs. However, the drugs could quicken the development of antibioticresistant infections(感染).Such infections are already a major public health concern in the United States. The World Health Organization(WHO)notes when people stop living in poverty(贫困),the first thing they want to do is eat better, rather than earn more money. For most people, that means their diet should contain more meat. With the rapid development of Asia, people there are eating nearly four times as much meat, milk and other milk products as they did 50 years ago.To meet the need, farmers have put many animals into smaller spaces. As the animals are crowded together, the easiest way to deal with some of the problems of crowding is to give them antibiotics. It's clear that antibiotics help animals stay healthy in crowded environments and grow faster. But bacteria can develop resistance to the drugs gradually.Nowadays, doctors find antibiotics that once worked against the infections no longer work. The bacteria have learned ways to fight against the drugs. The heavy use of antibiotics in farm animals is responsible for the growth of antibiotic resistance worldwide. Each year in the United States,at least two million people get antibioticresistantinfections and at least 23,000 die from these infections.Europe has banned the use of antibiotics to increase animal growth. And the United States is hoping to persuade farmers to stop using antibiotics for that purpose.1.What accounts for the increasing amount of antibiotics given to farm animals?A.The desire for new drugs.B.The less effective antibiotics.C.The outdated farm technology.D.The need for more various foods.2.What do most people want to do first when they get rid of poverty according to the WHO?A.Making a lot of money.B.Focusing more on health.C.Having more meat in their diet.D.Living in a better environment.3.What can be inferred from the passage?A.Antibiotics do harm to animals.B.Antibiotics help animals stay healthy.C.Antibiotics are used heavily in Europe.D.Antibioticresistant bacteria spread to people.4.What's the passage mainly about?A.The negative effect of antibiotics on farm animals.B.The advantages of using antibiotics.C.The reason for banning the use of antibiotics.D.A new way of raising farm animals.【解题导语】本文主要围绕在农场动物身上使用抗生素的负面影响展开。

必修4 Unit 4 Body language李仕才一、阅读理解AFacing increasing pressure to raise students' scores on standardized tests, schools are urging kids to work harder by offering them obvious encouragements. Happy Meals are at the low end of the scale. With the help of businesses, schools are also giving away cars, iPods, seats to basketball games, and —in a growing number of cases — cold, hard cash. The appeal of such programs is obvious, but the consequences of tying grades to goods are still uncertain. It's been a common tradition in middleclass families to reward top grades with cash as a way to teach that success in school leads to success in life. But for many disadvantaged minority children, the longterm benefits of getting an education are not so clear, according to experts. No one knows for sure how well cash and other bigticket rewards work in education in the long run. But there are plenty of concerns that this kind of practice could have negative effects on kids. Virginia Shiller, a clinical psychologist, says that it's worth experimenting with cash encouragements but that tying them to success on a test is not a worthwhile goal. “I'd rather see rewards based on effort and responsibility — things that will lead to success in life,” she says.Even if rewards don't lead to individual achievement on a test, they could have a meaningful effect in the school. Charles McVean, a businessman and philanthropist (慈善家), started a tuto ring program which pays higherachieving students $10 an hour to tutor struggling classmates and divides them into teams. During the course of the year, students bond and compete. The team posting the highest math scores wins the top cash prize of $100. McVean calls the combination of peer (同龄人) tutoring, competition, and cash encouragements a recipe for “nothing less than magic”.For its part, the Seminole County Public Schools system in Florida plans to continue its report card encouragement program through the rest of the school year. The local McDonald's restaurants help the poor district by paying the $1,600 cost of printing the report card. Regina Klaers, the district spokeswoman, says mostparents don't seem bothered by the Happy Meals rewar ds. “There are many ways we try to urge students to do well, and sometimes it's through the stomach, and sometimes it's the probability of students winning a car,” she says. “One size doesn't fit all.”【文章大意】本文是一篇议论文,主要论述了物质奖励对学生的成绩是否有促进作用。

Gates also got to sit down with Piketty himself after reading the nonfiction work to discuss the topic.“As I told him, although I have concerns about some of his secondary points and policy prescriptions, I agree with his most important conclusions: inequality is a growing problem and governments should play a role in reducing it.”How Asia Works, by Joe StudwellStudwell's work, which was published in May 2014, addresses how countries such as Japan, South Korea and China have continued to achieve high growth, and why other countries have failed to do the same.“The agriculture section of the book was particularly insightful. It providedample food for thought for me as well as the whole Agriculture team at our foundation. And it left us thinking about whether parts of the Asian model can apply in Africa.”Making the Modern World: Materials and Dematerialization, by Vaclav SmilSmil's books are a constant favorite of the Microsoft's founder — one of his books makes Gates' list almost every year. Making the Modern World came out late in 2013 and explores the global use of materials, from silicon to wood and plastic.“If anyone tries to tell you we're using fewer materials, send him this book. With his usual skepticism and his love of data, Smil shows how our ability to make things with fewer materials — say, soda cans that need less aluminum — makes them cheaper, which actually encourages more production.”语篇解读:本文介绍了比尔·盖茨喜欢阅读的四本关于商业和经济的书。

How can you help kids cope with stress? Proper rest and goodnutrition can improve coping skills, so can good parenting. Make time foryour kids each day. Whether they need to talk with you or just be in thesame room with you, make yourself available.Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after a tiring day of work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day—especially if they’ve had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in your kids shows that they’ re important to you.Help your child deal with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up with a few solutions. For example, he should cut back on after-school activities, spending more time talking with his parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal. You can also help by predicting potentially stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For example, let a child know ahead of time, but not too far ahead of time, that a doctor’s appointment is coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably won’t need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress.Remember that some level of stress is normal. Let kids know that it’s OK to feel angry, scared, lonely or anxious and that other people share those feelings, too. When kids can’t or won’t discuss these problems, try talking about y our own concerns. This shows that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with when they’re ready. If a child shows symptoms that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor (顾问)or other mental health experts. Most parents have the skills to cope with their children’s stress. The time to seek professional attention is when any change in behavior continues to exist, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behavior is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home.【文章大意】本文是一篇说明文, 讲述的是如何帮助孩子处理压力的事情。

BOOKS | ABOUT BOOKSBy David Hugh Smith | APRIL 5,2017As a little girl,Beatrix Potter loved the country and loved animals. So she brought many different creatures—rabbits, mice, even lizards—into her tiny world. As she grew older,Beatrix got better and better at drawing animals and nature. Then she started adding stories to her illustrations, making them into books.British author Matthew Dennison is the latest until last year to turn the story of Beatrix Potter herself into a book:Over the Hills and Far Away:The Life of Beatrix Potter.Indeed,Ms.Potter's extraordinary life makes for an absorbing tale.Nearly 75 years after her passing, she still is one of the most famous children's writers in the lions of copies of her 23 books have been sold —in many languages, Potter won her popularity by involving readers in the dilemmas of her characters using simple, almost poetic words.Dennison's text is filled with telling observations. He skillfully weaves Potter's stories into his description. But Dennison could have benefited from following Potter's example of straightforward storytelling. His description is nonlinear(非线性的).This can prevent the reader from understanding Potter's life.Dennison, however, repairs this with earnest descriptions, including his beautifully affectionate descriptions about Potter's life.At the end he describes the view today from the sitting room of her Hill Top home, now a museum in Cumbria County,in a way Potter would have loved:It stretches...past stone cottages and snaking lanes to...the blue slopes of mountains and the distant glimmer of sunlight on lake water, over the hills and far away.1.What can we learn about Over the Hills and Far Away: The Life of Beatrix Potter?A.It is about animals and nature.B.It is written by David Hugh Smith.C.It is an absorbing story about children.D.It is a newly published story about Potter.2.Which of the following is the book's writing style?A.Simple and poetic words.B.Straightforward storytelling.C.Clear and reasonable argument.D.Vivid and affectionate descriptions.3.What type of writing is the text likely to be?A.Book review. B.Children's literature.C.Advertisement. D.Science fiction.【解题导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要向读者介绍了作家Beatrix Potter,以及英国作家Matthew Dennison写的一本关于Beatrix Potter生活的书。

Just think about what would happen if you sat down and had an open and honest conversation with someone with completely opposing views. Could it bring you closer togetherHowever, the Human Library organization is counting on it.At a Human Library, people volunteer to become “books〞and make their experiences open and available. “Reade rs〞are encouraged to ask them questions freely, and they'll get honest answers in return. There are no judgments, and no questions that are off limits. You won't find unpleasant comments, and you won't lose faith in humanity. At the Human Library, you actually feel better about the world you live in. You might even make a new friend!“The human books consist of people who have been discriminated by society,〞said Ronni Abergel, the Human Library organization's founder, who has set out to build space for conversations that can challenge prejudices through dialogue. “The most pleasantly surprising thing about it is how close all the human books become to one another,〞he said.Human Libraries help to remind us there really is more, what unites us than divides us. And as events now spread throughout 82 countries, with the Human Libraries even set to launch soon in Pakistan and Jordan, you can tell that is a shared feeling.“We can spend billions and billions on trying to build up homeland security and our safety, but real safety comes from having positive relations to other groups in your community,〞said Abergel. “Real safety is not going to come from building walls. Unit 4 Body languageⅠ.阅读理解A(2016课标全国Ⅰ,D)The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups.Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, uneasiness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap(间隙)with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what may be implied(暗示) is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still anotheruse, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient’s silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing(治愈)value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.1.What does the author say about silence in conversations?A.It implies anger.B.It promotes friendship.C.It is culture-specific.D.It is content-based.2.Which of the following people might regard silence as a call for careful thought?A.The Chinese.B.The French.C.The Mexicans.D.The Russians.3.What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?A.Let it continue as the patient pleases.B.Break it while treating patients.C.Evaluate its harm to patients.D.Make use of its healing effects.4.What may be the best title for the text?A.Sound and SilenceB.What It Means to Be SilentC.Silence to Native AmericansD.Speech Is Silver; Silence Is GoldBAll over the world mothers and fathers teach their children manners.
