Fifth-grade teacher Amy King was busy calling names and packing away lunches. As the kids boarded (登上) the bus hired for the field trip, she made a small talk with the 75-year-old driver, Gerald Bailey.
King and her colleague (同事), Sherry Ledlow settled into the front seats for the three-hour ride. About an hour later, the teachers were chatting quietly when, suddenly, they felt the bus going off the highway. The children screamed.
King‟s first thought was about the kids, "I turned around and said, …Guys, it‟s fine. Calm down.‟"
Ledlow did the same. “We were telling them that we were all right,” she says. "But in my head, I was thinking, …Man, we had a close call.‟" The bus seemed to have lost control.
When the two teachers turned to the driver, they saw him sank in his seat, sleeping. "He was being held in his seat by his seat belt," says King, "but his head was just kind of hanging there."
King looked through the window: On the left, past the guardrail (护栏), was a steep (陡峭的) bank with tall trees. On the right, a low and grassy field. In a second, she made her decision. Leaning (斜靠) over the driver, she pulled the wheel back to the right. The bus flew over into the grassy land, throwing children out of their seats and sending King through the window. The bus slid (滑) through the grass for several yards before finally coming to a stop, and the frightened children began crawling their way out through the broken windows.
Ledlow, pressed against the broken window, managed to crawl outside, where she saw a badly injured King. The first thing King asked was whether her students were okay.
Luckily, none of the children were killed.

Olympic medalist Jo Jackson, 23-year-old, won bronze in the 400m freestyle at the Beijing Olympic Games. She believes every competition over the next few years will be a stepping stone toward London 2012. The swimmer is determined to improve further for 2012, and started by setting a new 400m- freestyle world record early in 2009.
Jackson also got silver in the 800m freestyle and bronze in the 4x200m relay (接力), as well as finishing fourth in the 200m freestyle at the 2009 World Championships in Rome. Later, in Britain, she broke the short-course 400m world record at the World Long Course and Commonwealth Games.

Jackson hopes the support in London in 2012 will be similar to that at the Foro Italico (古罗马广场). It had a wonderful atmosphere whenever the Italian swimmer Pellegrini was swimming. Pellegrini won the women‟s 200-meter freestyle in a world-record time at the Water Cube (水立方).
"I remember it being so noisy, more than the Olympics," she continues. "I think it encouraged both me and Pellegrini. It‟s absolutely amazing to have thousands cheer for us and to know they‟re there for us."

It is said that usually people learn from their experiences and the mistakes they make throughout their lives. This is correct because life teaches us what is correct to do and what is not.
Let‟s consider a mistake that one has made while trying to learn to drive. It is true that, being just a beginner, it is common to make mistakes, but after doing something wrong once, twice or three times, it is quite impossible to make the same error a fourth time. Everyone tries their best in order to improve their skills and they will be very pleased to notice that these improvements really happen.
On the other hand, being successful in everything one does, one cannot know what failure means. One would always see only the best side of things and it would be difficult for him or her to face the difficulties to come in the future. Here we can mention the case of a very successful football player, who has known what fame is from the very beginning of his career. One has to admit that most of his luck originates from the great talent that he was born with. But some fellow players can also work to achieve the same thing because they make mistakes in their games and they learn from each mistake that they make.
In the end, one can say that one needs to make mistakes in life in order to better appreciate things. And at the same time, mistakes teach you how important it is to fight
to obtain something you wish for in life. Of course, moments of happiness will come in return when you see the changes or improvements.
31. The author mentions learning driving in the second paragraph to ____.
A. make a comparison
B. explain that learning is a slow process
C. show that driving is a very difficult skill
D. prove that success results from failure
32. What is the author‟s attitude towards someone that is always successful at something?
A. He thinks they are lucky.
B. He is bored with them.
C. He envies (嫉妒) them.
D. He believes their success is a bad
thing.
33. Which of the following best describes the organisation of the passage?
A. Every dog has its day.
B. No one dish suits all tastes.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Where there is a will, there is
a way
34. From mistakes one can get all of the following, EXCEPT _______.
A. the realization of the importance of fighting
B. a better understanding of things
C. the spirit of teamwork
D. happiness in the end
35. What can one conclude from the passage?
A. Every dog has its day.
B. No one dish suits all tastes.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange, red? 36 . Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colour preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings. 37 . If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly.
38 . A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. 39 . A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides(自杀) than any other bridge in the area---until it was repainted green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply. Perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue.
40 . It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder, and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey.

C. The rooms are painted in different colours as you like.
D. If you do, you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement.
E. Light and bright colours make people not only happier but more active.

One Possible Version:
Dear Bill,
Thanks for your last letter. I am also very concerned about the problem you mentioned in the letter.
According to a recent survey carried out by some experts, about 37 species of animals disappear from the earth every year. It is clear that the problem has become a serious one and is worth our concern. Many factors should be considered wisely. In the very first place, human beings have played a big part in this disappearance. With the fast development of human society, the environment has been damaged or changed, and animals have lost their homes. What‟s more, people hunt animals for food and their skin. Accordingly, some species have become extinct.
The current problem, I believe, should be solved immediately. First of all, the government should make rules to protect animals. The public should also be taught to value the existence of these animals on the planet.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua。
