Step1 Lead in
Invite the students to open their books Explain that each words or phrase plays a part in the sentence. Different combinations of the elements form different sentences structure. Write the following sen tence on the board and analyze it.
She eats breakfast.
S V O
Write the five sentence str uctures on the board. And then get them to
analyze them as a whole. Tell them what the initial letters means. (S=subject, V= verb, DO= direct object, IO= indirect object, OC=object complement)

S V DO OC It is not hard for the students to find that. All the five kind of sentence stru ctures have ‘S’ and ‘V’. However, there are different situation after the verb. Therefore, it seems that to find the verb is very important. Generally speaking the verb decides the structure. However, one thing to declare here is that the following can not be applied to all sentences. I put it this way only to help the students understand.
Step 2 Going through the sample sentences
Go through the sample sentences on Page 81. Explain how the elements combined together. Pay special attention to the last two sentences.
Sandy gave the doves some food.
Give whom? Sandy gave the doves.
Give what? Sandy gave some food.
