最后,祝大家考试顺利!2012年职称英语理工类新增文章阅读理解(6篇)……………………3页第六篇 Making Light of1 Sleep第十九篇 Graphene's Superstrength1*第三+八篇 "Life Form Found" on Saturn's Titan*第四十篇 Teaching Math, Teaching Anxiety+第四+五篇 Teaching Math, Teaching Anxiety+第四十六篇Ants Have Big Impact on Environment as "Ecosystem Engineers"完形填空(6篇)……………………20页第三篇 Germs on Banknotes第十篇 Chicken Soup for the Soul:Comfort Food Fights Loneliness *第十一篇 Climate Change Poses Major Risks for Unprepared Cities*第十二篇 Free Statins With Fast Food Could Neutralize Heart Risk+第十三篇 Solar Power without Solar Cells+第十五篇“Liquefaction” Key to Much of Japanese Earthquake Damage注:1、+表示A级文章;*表示B即文章;其他为C级文章;2、阅读理解,请参见第3页;完形填空,请参见第20页;3、2012年词汇部分与2011年教材相比未作任何变化。

World Crude Oil Production May Peak a Decade Earlier Than Some Predict In a finding that may speed efforts to conserve(保护,保存) oil, scientists in Kuwait predict that world conventional crude oil production will peak in 2014.This prediction is almost a decade earlier than some other predictions. Their study is in ACS’Energy&Fuels.Ibrahim Nashawi and colleagues point out that rapid growth in global oil consumption has sparked a growing interest in predicting "peak oil". "Peak oil" is the point where oil production reaches a maximum and then declines. Scientists have developed several models to forecast this point, and some put the date at 2020 or later. One of the most famous forecast models is called the Hubbert model. It assumes that global oil production will follow a bell shaped curve.A related concept is that of "Peak Oil." The term "Peak Oil" indicates the moment in which world wide production will peak, afterwards to start on irreversible(不可逆的,不可改变的) decline. The Hubbert model accurately predicted that oil production would peak in the United States in 1970.The model has since gained in popularity and has been used to forecast oil production worldwide. However, recent studies show that the model is insufficient to account for more complex oil production cycles of some countries. Those cycles can be heavily influenced by technology changes, politics, and other factors, the scientists say.The new study describes development of a new version of the Hubbert model that provides a more realistic and accurate oil production forecast. Using the new model, the scientists evaluated the oil production trends of 47 major oil-producing countries, which supply most of the world’s conventional crude oil. They estimated that worldwide conventional crude oil production will peak in 2014,years earlier than anticipated. The scientists also showed that the world’s oil reserves are being reduced at a rate of 2.1 percent a year. The new model could help inform energy-related decisions and public policy debate, they suggest. 1.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the word "sparked" appearing in paragraph 2 ?A.flashedB.stimulatedC.changedD.ended2.The term "a bell shaped curve" appearing in paragraph 2 indicates that global oil production willA.take the shape of a flat curve.B.keep growing.C.keep declining.D.start to decline after global oil production peaks.3.Which of the following is NOT true of the Hubbert model?A.It successfully predicted that oil production peaked in the U.S.in 1970.B.It has been used to predict oil production in many countries.C.It is insufficient to explain oil production cycles in some countries.D.It provides a very realistic and accurate oil production.4.What is the major achievement of the new study mentioned in the last paragraph?A.It predicts global oil production will peak in 2014.B.It predicts oil production will decline in 47 countries.C.It confirms further the effectiveness of the Hubbert model.D.It discovers a new gend of worldwide oil production.5.Who develop the new version of the Hubbert model ?A.American scientists.B.Kuwaiti scientists.C.British scientists.D.Scientists of 47 major oil-producing countries.答案与题解:1.B2.D3.D4.A5.B第六篇Weaving with LightIn the Sierra Madre mountain range of west central Mexico1,the native Huichol people2 live much the way their ancestors did-without electricity. That's because it's too expensive to string power lines3 to the remote mountain areas where they live. To help support themselves, the Huichol create beautiful artwork. They sell their art in cities hundreds of miles away from their villages. And without electricity-at home or on the road, they can only work during daylight hours. When it gets dark, they must stop whatever they’re doing. Now,a team of scientists, designers, and architects is using4 new technologies to provide the Huichol with light after the sun sets The scientists' technique involves weaving tiny electronic crystals into fabrics that can be made into clothes, bags,or other items.By collecting the sun’s energy during the day, these lightweight fabrics provide bright white light at night. Their inventors have named the fabrics “Portable Lights. ” Portable Lights have the potential to transform the lives of people without electricity around the world, says project leader Sheila Kennedy.“Our invention,”Kennedy says,“came from seeing how w e could transform technology we saw every day in the United States and move it into new markets for people who didn’t have a lot of money.”At the core of5 Portable Light technology are devices called high-brightness light-emitting diodes,or HB LEDs6.These tiny lights appear in digital clocks, televisions, and streetlights.LEDs are completely different from the light bulbs. Most of those glass bulbs belong to a type called incandescent lights. Inside, electricity heats a metal coil to about 2,200 degrees Celsius. At that temperature, bulbs give off light we can see.Ninety percent of energy produced by incandescent lights, however,is heat - and invisible. With all that wasted energy, bulbs bum out quickly. They are also easily broken.LEDs,on the other hand, are like tiny pieces of rock made up of molecules that are arranged in a crystal structure. When an electric current passes through an LED,the crystal structure produces light. Unlike incandescent bulbs, they can produce light of various colors. Within an LED,the type of molecules and their particular arrangement determines what color is produced.

Common Questions about DreamsDoes everyone dream?Yes. Research shows that we all dream. We have our most vivid dreams during a type of sleep called Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep, the brain is very active. The eyes move quickly back and forth1 under the lids, and the large muscles of the body are relaxed. REM sleep ours every 90-100 minutes, three to four times a night, and it lasts longer as the night goes on. 1 We dream at other times during the night, too, but those dreams are less vivid.Do people remember their dreams?A few people remember their dreams. However, most people forget nearly everything that happened during the night —dreams, thoughts, and the short periods of time when they were awake. 2 It seems that the memory of the dream is not totally lost, but for some reason it is very hard to bring itback2. If you want to remember your dream, the best thing to do is to write it down as soon as you wake up.Are dreams in color? Most dreams are in color. However, people may not be aware of it for two reasons :They don’t usually remember the d etails of their dreams, or they don’t notice the color because it is such a natural part of our lives. 3Do dreams have meaning?Scientists continue to debate this issue.3 4 Some people use dreams to help them learn more about their feelings, thoughts, behavior, motives, and values. Others find that dreams can help them solve problems. It’s also true that artists, writers, and scientists often get creative ideas from dreams. How can I learn to understand my dreams? The most important thing to remember is that your dreams are personal. The people, actions, and situations in your dreams reflect your experience, your thoughts, and your feelings. Some dream experts believe that there are certain types of dreams that many people have, even if they e from different cultures or time periods. Usually, however, the same dream will have different meanings for different people. For example, an elephant in a dream may mean one thing to a zookeeper and something very different to a child whosefavorite toy is a stuffed elephant. 5 Then look for links between your dreams and what is happening in your daily life. If you think hard and you are patient, perhaps the meaning of your dreams will bee clearer to you.

Megaplane(巨型飞机)The Boeing Corp.and Europe’s Airbus consortium(财团)are preparing to offer bigger airplanes to the world’s airlines. Now that talks on a ioint project have broken down,Boeing is pushing a stretched(拓展的)version of the 747,and Airbus is designing’an all-new aircraft, known as theA3XX.Seating 550 passengers in the basic model, and 650 in a stretched version.the 1.2 million pound A3XX will not only be the largest airplane in the world, but it,will also be one of the most advanced. The outer wings and the horizontal stabilizer(as big as a smaller jet’s wing)will be made of car bon-fiber composite materials, and will be the largest such structures on any aircraft except the B-2 stealth bomber(隐形轰炸机).Metal skins will be welded (焊接)together with lasers, removing thousands of fasteners. When a strong wind strikes the A3XX’s 260-foot wing.movable control surfaces will prevent it from flexing(扭曲)like a giant spring. This will make the ride smoother and will save weight by reducing the load on the wing spars(翼梁).A flexible.skinned flap(副翼)will subtly change the wing’s curvature(曲面)to m atch the airplane’s changing weight as it bums fuel on each journey. The A3XX will carry up to 1,600 meals, filling more than,1 00 food andbeverage(饮料) carts. To make more room for passengers,Airbus plans to put the carts in the lower hold;automatic conveyors and elevators will deliver them to the two passenger decks.Airlines have asked Airbus to look at extra features ranging from lower-deck sleeper cabins to a children’splayroom.Airbus expects to offer the A3XX to airlines in 1998,and deliver the first aircraft in 2003.16 The basic model ofA3XX can carry more than 500 passengers.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned17 A3XX will fly faster while consuming less oil.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned18 A3XX will be bigger than the B-2 stealth bomber.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned19 No fasteners will be used in bullding A3XX because all components will be welded together.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned20 The wing of A3XX will not be spoiled surfaces are designed to be movable.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned21 Airbus plans to build a mini-restaurant in the lower hold of A3XX.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned22 The first A3XX will be available in 2003.A RightB WrongC Not mentioned。

Citizen ScientistsUnderstanding how nature responds to climate change will require monitoring key life cycle1 events-flowering, the appearance of leaves, the first frog calls of the spring - all around the world. But ecologists can't be everywhere so they're turning to non-scientists, sometimes called citizen scientists, for help.Climate scientists are not present everywhere. Because there are so many places in the world and not enough scientists to observe all of them, they're asking for your help in observing signs of climate change across the world. The citizen scientist movement encourages ordinary people to observe a very specific research interest - birds, trees, flowers budding, etc. - and send their observations to a giant database to be observed by professional scientists. This helps a small number of scientists track a large amount of data that they would never be able to gather on their own. Much like citizen journalists helping large publications cover a hyper-local beat2, citizen scientists are ready for the conditions where they live. All that's needed to become one is a few minutes each day or each week to gather data and send it3 in.A group of scientists and educators launched an organization last year called the National Pheonology4 Network. "Phenology" is what scientists call the study of the timing of events in nature. One of the group's first efforts relies on scientists and non-scientists alike to collect data about plant flowering and leafing every year. The program, called Project BudBurst, collects life cycle data on a variety of common plants from across the United States. People participating in the project - which is open to everyone - record their observations on the Project BudBurst website."People don't have to be plant experts -they just have to look around and see what's in their neighborhood," says Jennifer Schwartz, an education consultant with the project. "As we collect this data, we'll be able to make an estimate of how plants and eommunities5 of plants and animals will respond as the climate changes." 芽,花蕾Neighbor(u)rhood n.

Others, however, think that dreams are an important part of our lives. In fact, many experts believe that dreams can tell us about a person’s mind and emotions.
Before modern times, many people thought that dreams contained messages from God. It was only in the twentieth century that people started to study dreams in a scientific way.

In his famous book, The interpretation of Dreams (1900), Freud wrote that dreams are an expression of a person’s wishes. He believed that dreams allow people to express the feelings, thoughts, and fears that they are afraid to express in real life. 1
The Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung, however, had a different idea about dreams. Jung believed that the purpose of a dream was to communicate a message to the dreamer. He thought people could learn more about themselves by
