Lucky’s Greatest TreasureMary and her husband Jim had a dog named “Lucky.” Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit, they would warn their friends not to leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing.Mary or Jim would go to Lucky’s toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky’s other favorite toys. Lucky always stored his finds in his toy box.It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease. She scheduled a double mastectomy(乳房切除术), fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital, she hugged Lucky closely in her arms. A thought struck her — what would happen to Lucky? Although the three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary’s dog through and through. “If I die, Lucky will be abandoned”, Mary thought, “He won’t understand that I didn’t want to leave him”. The thought made her sadder than that of her own death. The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim faithfully took Lucky for his evening walk, but the little dog just hung down, whining (哀鸣) and miserable. Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted that she couldn’t even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap.Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn’t come to her when she called. It made Mary sad, but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed. When Mary woke, for a second she couldn’t understand what was wrong. She couldn’t move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the sad dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love.Mary forgot about dying. Instead, she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every day. It’s been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? Today, most records of biodiversity are often in the form of photos, videos, and other digital records. Though they are useful for detecting shifts in the number and variety of species in an area, a new Stanford study has found that this type of record is not perfect.“With the rise of technology it is easy for people to make observation s of different species with the aid of a mobile application,” said Barnabas Daru, who is lead author of the study and assistant professor of biology in the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences. “These observations now outnumber the primary data that comes from physical specimens(标本), and since we are increasingly using observational data to investigate how species are responding to global change, I wanted to know: Are they usable?”Using a global dataset of 1.9 billion records of plants, insects, birds, and animals, Daru and his team tested how well these data represent actual global biodiversity patterns.“We were particularly interested in exploring the aspects of sampling that tend to bias (使有偏差) data, like the greater likelihood of a citizen scientist to take a picture of a flowering plant instead of the grass right next to it,” said Daru.Their study revealed that the large number of observation-only records did not lead to better global coverage. Moreover, these data are biased and favor certain regions, time periods, and species. This makes sense because the people who get observational biodiversity data on mobile devices are often citizen scientists recording their encounters with species in areas nearby. These data are also biased toward certain species with attractive or eye-catching features. What can we do with the imperfect datasets of biodiversity?“Quite a lot,” Daru explained. “Biodiversity apps can use our study results to inform users of oversampled areas and lead them to places – and even species – that are not w ell-sampled. To improve the quality of observational data, biodiversity apps can also encourage users to have an expert confirm the identification of their uploaded image.”32. What do we know about the records of species collected now?A. They are becoming outdated.B. They are mostly in electronic form.C. They are limited in number.D. They are used for public exhibition.33. What does Daru’s study focus on?A. Threatened species.B. Physical specimens.C. Observational data.D. Mobile applications.34. What has led to the biases according to the study?A. Mistakes in data analysis.B. Poor quality of uploaded pictures.C. Improper way of sampling.D. Unreliable data collection devices.35. What is Daru’s suggestion for biodiversity apps?A. The principle of humanity compels us to alleviate suffering wherever it may exist, transcending borders and ideologies. Voluntary service and unity remind us that our collective efforts, driven by a shared commitment to helping others, can create a profound and lasting impact.Joining the Red Cross would not only allow me to put my skills and knowledge into practice but also provide me with invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. I am confident that my academic background, practical experiences, and personal convictions have prepared me to contribute meaningfully to the organization's mission. The Red Cross represents more than just an organization to me; it is a beacon of hope in a world often marred by conflict, natural disasters, and human suffering. By being part of this global movement, I aspire to play a role, however small, in alleviating the suffering of others and fostering a more compassionate and equitable society. Without financial aid, it would be nearly impossible for me to afford the education I need to build a better future.Secondly, I believe that financial aid is not justabout money, but also about equal opportunities. Many students, like myself, come from disadvantaged backgrounds and face numerous barriers in pursuing higher education. Financial aid can level the playing field and give us afair chance to succeed. By supporting students who are motivated and dedicated to their studies, society can benefit from awell-educated workforce. With the knowledge and skills gained through education, students can contribute to the development and progress of our country. Financial aid is not just a handout, but an investment in the potential of young minds. In addition, financial aid can also have a positive impact on the overall economy. By providing assistance to students, it allows them to focus on their studies and not be burdened by financial stress. This, in turn, can lead to higher graduation rates and more skilled professionals in various fields. A well-educated workforce is essential for economic growth and prosperity.Lastly, I believe that financial aid is a way to promote social justice. Education is a fundamental right, and everyone should have access to it regardless of their financial situation. By providing financial aid, we canensure that no student is left behind due to financial constraints. It is a way to create a more equal and inclusive society, where everyone has the opportunity to fulfill their potential. In conclusion, I am in need of student financial aid to overcome the financial challenges I face as a student. Financial aid is not just about money, but about equal opportunities, investment in the future, economic growth, and social justice. I hope that my application will be considered and that I will be given the opportunity to continue my education with the support I need. Thank youfor considering my request.。
