Hard Times实践报告 全英
Hard TimesHard Times, one of novels wrote by Charls Dickens, is choosen to be the book that our group read during the two weeks. Although we haven’t finished it and have only read the first ten chapters, the different characters in this novel still leave deep impressions on us. The first impressive character is Mr. Gradgrind who is a man of realities and a man of facts and calculations. He is not only this kind of person, but also forces his children or even his students to do so regardless of their nature and willingness. And Mr. Bounderby, similarly, is a man who pays much attention to facts and is always boasting his achievements. These two people are main characters of this novel, and the reason why they are so impressive is not only because of their special features but because of the ways that the author uses to describe them. We have different feelings when reading each different chapters, so this book is well worth reading and we can learn a lot from it.In these ten chapters, what is firstly worthy of reading for us is character’s appearance description. Through the vivid description, we can feel that this kind of man is living around us and guess what personalities he possesses. In chapter ten, it describes Stephen as follows, “A rather stooping man, with a knitted brow, a pondering expression of face...”From the description, we have a hard-working and serious image in our mind. And then, there are many wonderful and beautiful phrases andspecial expressions that we are not able to apply to our writing. In the process of reading, once finding some beautiful expressions, we will write them down in order to make improvements in our writing aspect. In addition, this novel contains many philosophical sentences which offer us an opportunity to know some life lessons. When reading these sentences, we can have the same feelings as author and tend to ponder life. In context, there is a word which is clearly remembered. That is, “every life has its own roses and thorns”, which is definately right. No one has a smooth path to go, we should admit success and failure, happiness and sorrow, roses and throns. Apart from what have already been mentioned, the creation of plots are also attractive. In a word, this book is very meaningful and well worth reading for everyone. In terms of what we have learnt from the novel of Hard Times, we not only learn some methods to service for our writing, but get some philosophies from the heroes and they can guide us to live relaxably and comfortably. In this novel, the author uses amounts of coordinate clauses in his sentences, and the expressions are clearly so that we can see the sentence structures instantly and better comprehend the plots in the novel. Besides, there are many pauses in the sentences to stress some points. For example, “even the coming sun made but a pale waste in the sky, like a sad sea”, which is used to stress the effect “like a sad sea”and the function is realised by using a comma. Therefore, we can use morecoordinate clauses and pauses to improve our writing level. There are more recognizitions that we can by analyzing the heroes and their fates to guide our life. Mr. Gradgrind, the main figures, intends every child and students in it to be a model. Obeying this belief, he wants to regulate and govern them by facts and forbid them to fancy. Although he wants his children and students to be educated well, his trainment at the end leads them to lost themselves and become tools of life. No doubt, it is a great pity for these naive and active children. Thus, either as a parent or a guider, one should encourage his children and students to fancy and pursue what they want bravely.Having read the first ten chapters, everyone in our group has her own feeling about this novel.Yang Peipei thinks strving for facts is exactly right, but the problem is that paying more attention to facts will cause unnecessary bad influence. Under Mr. Gradgrind’s principle of realities, his children’s nature is smothered. They are trained as the machines which just do calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Instead, they can not play, imagine and wonder anything funny. I sympathize the children’s childhood, like Tom and Louisa’s, because they can not do what they should do as children. Meanwhile, I hate the man like Mr. Bounderby. He is always boasting his achievements as a businessman by means of complaining his miserable childhood. His mindis filled with vanity and prejudice since he looks down upon the poor people, and just appreciates people born with a high status, such as his butler Mrs. Sparsit. From these chapters, I feel that I am lucky because of having a happy childhood, and think that we have no right to neglect other people’ s existence no matter how he is poor or rich.In Yang Dan’s opinion, Mr. Bounderby, a prominent figure in Coketown, has suffered in his childhood; his mother eserted him, and he became an vagrant who was raged by many people. Eventually, he escaped from the harse life and became a famous man in the town. In this aspect, he is deversed to be resupect. However, now and then, he always tells the known and the unknown that how unlucky he was at his little age, and shows off how outstanding now he is. Eventually, he is considered to be a self-important man. Thus, when we are in dilema, we should strive diligently for our good life and never yield to the reality; when we get great achievements and stand in a high position, we should keep a modest attitude to the surroundings. And the most poor heroes must be the kind Lousia. To please her families, she marrys to Mr. Bounderby, a man who is older than her about 30 and she hates very much. In fact, her heart has died when she answers to the proposal and she has forgotten her interests. Of course, she doen not get any happiness in the marriage. And, I believe that no body wants to own such kind of life. Thus, just pursuing our happiness bravely and living a life that we want even it is so hard. Nodoubt, Hard Times, as a classive novel, not only clearly shows us the social backgrounds and features at the time of Industrial Revolution, but provides us with many writing methods and stimulates us to obtain many philosophies to guide our life.In Han Pan’ s opinion, from two-week reading, author’ s ability to describe people’s appearance is very admirable. For example, Mr. Gradgrind is a man of facts, and author describes his forehead as square wall, his mouth as wide, thin and hard set, and his voice as inflexible, dry and dictatorial, which all help emphasize his facts. Another feature is that author is good at making people’s appearance closely related to their backgrounds. For eample, when describing Childers in Sleary’s Horsemanship, author describes him like this, “he is dressed in a Newmarket coat and tight-fitting trousers; wore a shawl round his neck; smelt of lamp-oil, straw, orange-peel, horses provender, and sawdust; and looked a most remarkable sort of Centaur, compounded of the stable and the play-house,” which make me clearly know what he is doing on seeing his appearance. In addition, author’s words choices and sentences combination are also wonderful and are deserved to learn. There are some sentences. “He brought himself up against Mr. Gradgrind’s waistcoat and rebounded into the road,” which means he ran against Mr, Gradgrind, but author here chooses waistcoat to indicate the degree that the bump between him and Mr. Bounderby. Another sentence is “she was gonedirectly, without her bonnet; with her long, dark, childish hair streaming behind her.” Two phrases are contained in this sentence to avoid that the sentence is too long to express the meaning clearly. So, although the chapters we have read are few, we have learned a large amount of knowledge. In Wang Na’s opinion, Mr. Gradgrind who sticks to an education system that is very old and strange always tries to use his idea to educate children, and he tries to give more attention to promote children’s ration. He never care about cultivating children’s sentiments and affections. His education system does have great damage to children’s life, and even to make children hate studying. Besides, the education system he believed will kill children’s wonder because he does not allow students to have their own wonders, which may cause great damage to a student’s life.Through two-week practice, each of us benefit a lot from reading this novel, and teacher’s questions are also useful in our reading, which draw our attention to what we should care. The only pity is that we haven’t finished it in the limited time, but we still learn many knowledges from it and sometimes wonder what will happen in the next chapters, and we will try to finish it later.实践报告第七组成员:杨佩佩韩盼杨丹王娜。

Hard times
A Book Report of HARD TIMESHard Times was written by the Charles Dickens (7 February 1812---9 June 1870) was an English writer, generally considered to be greast novelist of the victorian period and responsible for sone of English literature`s most ironic novels and characters.During his lifetime Dickens` works enjoyed unprecedented popularity a fame, and they remain popular today. It was in the twentieth century. However, that his literary genius was fully recognized by critics and scholars.Charles Dickens published over a dozen major novels a large number of short stories (including a number of Christmas themed stories), a handful of plays, and several non-fiction books. Writing point of view of Dickens`s realism in China has come into notice of many scholars, to understand the binding don`t care about the Chinese Novel style:Lao she`s works though reading Dichens to writing like him;more writerthrough over Lin Shu`s translation exposure to English and American literature and inspire. The Hard Times is the works of British writer Charles Dickens, published in 1854, the story describes the lives of an industrial town. The Josiah Bounderby is a mills factory owners, and bankers and Thomas Gradgrind who is a retired hardware whole salers, members of cogness and educator are good friends. They together control theeconomy with the educational institutions of the town. They focus on the real benefits and don`t speak the bonds of friendship, pretentious utilitarianism as a principle of life. Responsible serve Bounderby, was the Mrs. Shibasite. The Gradgrind asked his children`s to practical and realistic, down to earth when they learned to walk, was driven into the classroom all day with the numbers. They aren`t allowed to reach the poems and stories. The Gradgrind asked his young daughter named Louisa to marriaged age is much greater than her. This man is Bounderby, but the Mrs. Shibasite envied her, she suffered pain. Leading to the daughter of a broken marriage. Louisa blame her father,” your philosophy and education can save me.” Then, the Gradgrind asked his son to help the Bounderby do work. The son named Tom was forced to assist the work of the Bounderby, his life of boose and deft, stole Bounderby shell money in the bank to escape and his in the circus, play the role of a clown. After a series of painful lessons.,but also by the circus girl. Frances Csissy Cecilia Jupe is problem, dradually changed the attitude towards life, his father in the Americas. But died in mothering the way. Bounderby likes to boast of their own from scratch, the slandered workers to engender dissatisfaction with the delusion of luxury living. Five years after the Bounderby stroke sudden death in the street of coking coal town, then. The Louisa remarry other people. This novel follows a classical tripartite structure. Book1. SowingBook2. ReapingBook3. GarneringRelating back to Dickens` aim to “strike the heaviest blow in my power,”he wished to educate readers about the working cinditions of some of the factories in the industrial towns of Manchester, and Boston. Relating to this also, Dickens wished to confront the assumption that prosperity runs parallel to morality, a notion which is systematically deconstructed in this novel through his portrayal of the moral monsters, Mr. Bounderby and James Harthouse. Dickens was also campaigning for the imagination in life and not for people`s life to be reduced to a collection of material facts and state is typical analyses.Dickens` favourable portrayal of the Circus, which he describes as caring so “little for Plain Fact,” is an example of this.Fact vs FancyThis theme is develpoed early on, the bastion of Fact being the eminently practical Mr. Gradgrind and his model school, which teaches nothing but Facts. Any imaginative or aesthetic subjects are eradicated from the curriculum, but analysis, deduction and mathematics are emphasised. Conversely, Fancy is the opposite of Fact, fiction, music, poetry and novelty shows such as sleary`s circus. It is interestingthat Mr. Sleary is reckoned to be a fool by the fact men, it is Sleary who realises people must be amused. This is made cognisant by Tom`s sybaritic gambling and Louisa, who is virtually soulless as a young child, and as a married woman. Bitzer, who has adhered to Gradgrind`s teachings as a child, turns out to be an uncompassinate egotist offciousness and spying.Prying and knowledge is key to several characters, namely Mrs. Sparsit and Mr. Bounderby spends his whole time fabricating stories about his childhood, covering up the real nature of his upbringing, which is solemnly revealed at the end of the novel. While not a snoper himself, he is undone by Sparsit upwritingly revealing the mysterious old woman to be his own mother, and she unrevels Josiah`s secrets about his upbringing and fictious stories. Mrs. Bounderby himself super intends through calculating statements and statistics, and is always secretly repuking the people of Coke town for indulging in conceitful actirities. This gives Bounderby a sense of superiority, as it does with Mrs. Sparsit, who prides herself on her salacious knowledge gained from spying on others. Bounderby`s grasp for superiority is seen in Blackpool`s talk to Bounderby regarding divorce proceeding and a union movement at his factory, accusing him that he is on a quest to feast on turtle soup and venison, served with a golden spoon. All super intendents of the novel are undone in one way, or another.HonestyThis is closely related to Dickens` typical social commentary, which is a theme he uses throughout his entire ceurve. Dickens portrays the wealthy in this novel as being morally corrupt. Bounderby has no moral scruples; he fires Blackpool “for a novelty”. He also conducts himself without any shred of decency, frequently losing his temper. He is cynically false about his childhood. Harthouse, a leisured gent, is compared to an “iceberg” who will cause a wreck unwritingly, due to him being”not a moral sort of fellow”, as he states himself. The stephen Blackpool, a destitude worker,is equipped with perfect morals always abiding by his primises, and always thoughtful and considerate of other, as is sissy Jupe.On the cover of his this book, saying material things brewing on the suffering, the materialistic will into the clouds. Implyed such a judgement to the economic animal, is a money making machine, is the pursuit of self-interest productivity, with some date and a few forms, enough to explain a social all the problems. This Dickens firm can`t agree. He believes this is to distort and belittle people, which distort and belittle will lead to terrible social evil.Hard Times is to the criticism of utilitarianism and political economy as a starting point, purpose falls to adhere to human nature, enhance the humanity above. Human nature has many elements. In thenovel, Dickens has many occasions. He emphasized fantasy, entertainment, faith, personality and other issues. “Fantasy” and “Facts”in the utilitariansim as opposed. Shilieerma opera is “entertainment”is the Mr. Bounderby`s factory work as opposed to stephen`s “faith” is the antithesis of the so-called “truth’’ (reason) ;and so on.Hard Times shaped an adious and unforgettable character: Yu e﹒Seya﹒. Bounderby. His most characteristic is the contemple for the feelings. Because of extreme contemplt for the feelings of many of his performance if he did lose the feelings of loss human nature. He once described his mother to hide the country and. He allowed not to meet. Mr. Bounderby didn’t feel the need to love and take care of their own mother. He made self-made fortune in the history of the founding and not only for egotism. On the surface, he is unreasonable, debate, in essence, he is showing his ruthless. Ruthless is his way of thinking. Because he look at things the world has been simplistic. Mr. Bounderby easily underground out of the conclusion as to their own perferences, continue to denounce the redict. Mr. Bounderby seems to be lost the same kind of feelings, not to say that he really is not any emotion. Just live in a strong self-centered inside his emotional performance as extremely distorted state. The vast majority of people, Mr. Bounderby has some feelings. Because he had the instincts and needs instigated by the instinct of nature, he took a fancy to the small of his three-year-old daughter, louisa. Of course, in the surfaceof consciousness, Bounderby does not think this is the Love, the only think this is a marriage. Their marriage to Mr. Bounderby is very unfortunate, because on the one hand, he was hidden in her subconscious emotional expectations. On the other hand, he was always been contempt for the feelings of the habit so that he can’t be normal to express themselves. In social life, ruthless made him powerful, but this is only the surface, because in family life, heartless to make him incompetent. He abandoned his mother, but he needs a mother’s hentle and considerate. Although he relied on Mrs. Lankabassett, but neither make her act as him mother doesn’t make her owu woman: he married Louisa, and then Mrs. Lankabassett was sent the house. He can’t afford to Louisa his in difference.Okay. Then we look another an important figure in the novel ---Thomas Gray. For a long time, China’s critics on this figure is too harsh. Mr. Bounderby is almost equal to that Mr. Bounderby’s rule from the material the coal town, Gradgrind from sprit of the rule of coal town. The two men acted in collusion. They act as birds of a feather, and so on. This is not the flat of the theory. The mmost basic difference is that they, Mr. Bounderby almost lost the emotional nature, the Mr. Gradgrind is a not the lack of normal feelings of the people. Bounderby is a liar, the Gradgrind is a gentleman, Bounderby has a taste of vogue. They also believe in utilitariansim and political economy, Bounderby is the mainpractice of doing everything, possible to achieve their personal interests, he expressed as self-serving: Gradgrind are more inclined to theory, engage in adrocacy, the provision of education, expressed as service of others, Bounderby, out of character, self-centered tendencies, and telentless have been accustomed to has been persuaded, and cast him human disability, and the rest of their lives can’t help themselves Mr. Gradgrind’s is his nature was suppressed by the theory.that his feelings are affected, so that he because numbness. This is why he is not a lack of feelings, but in the novel. He was very solemn and perserve. His faith collapsed when the fate of her daughter’s real exposure in front of him, fellowed by, he has also take place a delicate chang. He was old, and at the same time gentle and humble. He experienced a painful, he begun to become able to feel and understand. He no longer take the theory of rote, learn to look at prombles using instincts and feeling.Hard Times has set up two characters environment: asking coal town and circus. The circus represents the proper health of human life, but the coal town behalf of the morbid contorted life. The town lost its emotional characterization of the city, the same streets, the same residents, and even all the ploques and signs in town are using the same font, black and white, that prison canact as the hospital. The hospital also can act as the prison, but in the circus are colourful inside and outside. The people feeling fresh and clean in the here, there is no pretense. They can be easyand natural, logical marriage, children, haapy, to form a cntrast with louisa difficult and depressed marriage.Hard Times is a typical of industrial novel. It focuses on the Description of the industrial city of painful social life. Its emontional point of view is overcome with love machine. Although each writer’s opinion, they regarded love as the basic way to solve social problems. But Love can really help solve the problems of human society?A long time, our answer has been negative,. We think this is the useless pray for the writer, we think this is the fantasy of people weak. The premise of this idea is the confidence of mankind: in essence, the person is good, noble, so there is hope ultimately,. This is a tremendous force to promote human progress. We are accustomed to political stance, that only change the social system in order to eliminate the evil suffering. Mr. Dickens’s novel has many Love that is a simple and powerful philosophy as the fundation. Because the main frame of his work such a correctness while standing. Dickens is not superficial. Dickens is profound, but his profound, such as common sense and cordial, Dickens’s novel not only practical plain smart and funny, and full health power of reason. In my opinion, this is the reason why his work lasting, never tired of reading one of the reasons. The reason why a century and a half. I think it is worthy of careful reading!。
Hard-Times 艰难时世
Dickens’ Attack on Utilitarianism
• Dickens attacks the use of statistics and enquiries to determine policy.
• Dickens’ attack is surprising in that ‘we are invited to also condemn the kind of thinking and the methods of enquiry and legislation which in fact promoted a large measure of social and industrial reform.’ Raymond Williams (Cambridge University)
Context
• Dedicated to Thomas Carlyle, author of The French Revolution
• Carlyle thought industrialisation was dehumanising the working classes.
• Like Dickens, he was anti-industrial because he disapproved of its effect in social levelling.

hard-pressed to find one that doesn't believe it can teach the skills of entrepreneurship. However,of the people who immediately 1to mind when one thinks of entrepreneurs——Bill Gates,Richard Branson or Oprah Winfrey, for example—few have done more than 2a speech at a business school.3,a recent study by King's College in London has suggested what many intuitively 4:that entrepreneurship may actually be in the blood—more to do with genes than classroom experience. All of which 5the question—does an entrepreneur really need a business-school education? Not surprisingly some of the best-known schools in the field have a 6answer to this:they don't actually profess to create entrepreneurs,7they nurture innate ability.Or as Timothy Faley of the entrepreneurial institute atMichigan's Ross School of Business 8it:“A good idea is not enough. You need to know how to 9a good idea into a good business.”Schools do this in a number of ways. One is to 10that faculty are a mix of classic academics and businesspeople with experience of 11their own successful firms. They can also create “incubators”where students 12ideas and rub shoulders on a day-to-day basis with the external business world, receiving both advice and hard cash in the form of investment.Arguably such help is now more important than ever. The modernentrepreneur is faced with a more 13world than when Richard Branson began by selling records out of a phone box.According to Patrice Houdayer, head of one of Europe's best-known entrepreneurship schools,EMIYON in France, new businesses used to move through a 14series of growth steps—what he terms garage, local, national and international. Now however,15the communications revolution, they can leapfrog these stages and go global more or lessstraightaway—encountering a whole new 16of problems and challenges. In this 17Professor Houdayer maintains that the increasingly 18nature of MBA classes can help the nascent entrepreneur in three ways:by plugging them into an 1.(40points)Text 1What's a label worth?A lot,it seems.Michael Hiscox and Nicholas Smyth, two Harvard University researchers, conducted an experiment on two sets of towels in an upmarket New York shop. One lot carried a label with the logo “Fair and Square”and the following message:These towels have been made under fair labour conditions,in a safe and healthy working environment which is free of discrimination, and where management has committed to respecting the rights and dignity of workers. The other set had no such label.Over five months, the researchers observed the impact of making various changes such as switching the label to the other set of towels and raising prices. The results were striking:not only did sales of towels 经典考资祝福你考试成each time the price was raised. No wonder companies are keen to appeal to ethically (i.e.morally )minded consumers, whether on labour standards or green credentials.Timberland,a New Hampshire outdoor-gear company,is introducing detailed "Green Index”labels on its shoes.Tesco,M &S and Wal-Mart have all launched initiatives that bet on the rise of the ethical consumer.M &S estimates that about three-quarters of British consumers areinterested in the green theme in some way.But even the keenest ethical consumer faces complicated situations, and sometimes the apparently obvious ethical choice turns out to be the wrong one.Surely it must be greener for Britons to buy roses from the Netherlands than ones air-freighted from Kenya? In fact,a study showed that related green house gas to the Dutch roses to be six times as large because they had to be grown in heated greenhouses.Joel Makower, editor of ,says that, given a choice, mostconsumers will choose the greener product—provided it does not cost any more, comes from a trusted maker, requires no special effort to buy or use and is at least as good as the alternative.“That's almost an impossible barrier for any product,”he notes. So shoppers will still flock to shops selling cheap products of decent quality, ignoring how these are made. They will often buy more if a product is attractively presented, never mind that the packaging may be wasteful. And when companies try to do the right thing, consumers will not always go along with them. The lesson for companies is that selling green is hard work. And it is no good getting too far ahead of the customer.Half a step ahead is about right.Much more, and you won't sell.Any less, and you won't lead.21.The experiment on the towels indicated that ______.[A ]consumers liked to purchase labeled products[B ]consumers would buy goods when prices rose[C ]consumption was influenced by green labels[D ]ethical concern may influence consumption22.According to the text, consumers’ethical choice ______.[A ]determines the production of commodities[B ]forces companies to sell green products only[C ]leads companies to modify business activities[D ]leads to higher labour and green standards23.We may infer from the fourth paragraph that ______.[A ]green buying may be at higher environment cost[B ]green production is actually complicated business[C ]Dutch rose growth is greener than Kenya ones[D ]British consumers actually oppose green farming24.According to Joel Makower, most consumers will ______.[A ]buy greener products when given a choice[B ]reject greener products for various reasons 经典考资祝福你考试成[D ]refuse to follow the activities of companies 25.Companies may learn the lesson that ______.[A ]it is not worthwhile leading the customers [B ]the customers are not easily to be misled [C ]green policy is not effective for marketing [D ]companies need a balanced green policy Text 2There are various ways in which individual economic units can interact with one another.Three basic ways may be described as the market system, the administered system and the traditional system. In a market system individual economic units are free to interact amongeach other in the marketplace. It is possible to buy commodities from other economic units or sell commodities to them.In a market, transactions may take place via barter or money exchange. In a barter economy, real goods such as automobiles, shorts, and pizzas are traded against each other.Obviously, finding somebody who wants to trade my old car in exchange for a sailboat may not always be an easy task.Hence the introduction of money as a medium of exchange eases transactions considerably. In the modern market economy, goods and services are bought or sold for money. An alternative to the market system is administrative control by someagency over all transactions. This agency will issue edicts or commands as to how much of each good and service should be produced, exchanged, and consumed by each economic unit.Central planning may be one way of administering such an economy. The central plan, drawn up by the government, shows the amounts of each commodity produced by the various firms and allocated to different households for consumption. This is an example of complete planning of productionconsumption, and exchange for the whole economy. In a traditional society, production and consumption patterns are governed by tradition:every person's place within the economic system is fixed by parentage, religion and custom.Transactions take place on the basis of tradition, too.People belonging to a certain group or caste may have an obligation to care for otherpersons, provide them with food and shelter, care for their health, and provide their education.Clearly,in a system where every decision made on the basis of tradition alone, progress may be difficult to achieve.A stagnant society may result.26.What is the main purpose of the passage?[A ]To outline contrasting types of economic.[B ]To explain the science of economic systems.[C ]To argue sustainable competitive advantage depends on work-force skills,American firms have a problem.Human-resource management is considered an individual bour is simply another factor of production to be hired—rented at the lowest possible cost—much as one buys raw materials or equipment. The lack of importance attached to human-resource management can be seen in the corporate hierarchy. In an American firm the chief financial officer is almost always second in command. The post of head of human-resourcemanagement is usually a specialized job,off at the edge of the corporate hierarchy. The executive who holds it is never consulted on major strategic decisions and has no chance to move up to Chief Executive Officer (CEO ).By way of contrast,in Japan the head of human-resources management is central—usually the second most important executive, after the CEO,in the firm's hierarchy. While American firms often talk about the vast amounts spent on training their work forces,in fact they invest less in the skills of their employees than do either Japanese of German firms. The money they do invest is also more highly concentrated on professional and managerial employees. And the limitedinvestments that are made in training workers are also much more narrowly focused on the specific skills necessary to do the next job rather than on the basic background skills that make it possible to absorb new technologies. As a result, problems emerge when new breakthrough technologies arrive. If American workers, for example, take much longer to learn how to operate new flexible manufacturing stations than workers in Germany (as they do ),the effective cost of those stations is lower in Germany than it is in the United States.More time is required before equipment is up and running at capacity, and the need for extensive retraining generates costs and creates bottlenecks that limit the speed with which new equipment can be employed. The result is a slower pace of technologicalchange. And in the end the skills of the population affect the wages of the top half.经典考资祝福你考试成management and professional jobs that go with these processes will disappear.31.Which of the following applies to the management of human resources in American companies?[A ]They hire people at the lowest cost regardless of their skills.[B ]They see the gaining of skills as their employees'own business.[C ]They attach more importance to workers than equipment.[D ]They only hire skilled workers because of keen competition.32.What is the position of the head of human-resource management in an American firm?[A ]He is one of the most important executives in the firms.[B ]His post is likely to disappear when new technologies are introduced.[C ]He is directly under the chief financial executive.[D ]He has no say in making important decisions in the firm.33.The money most American firms put in training mainly goes to ______.[A ]workers who can operate new equipment [B ]technological and managerial staff [C ]workers who lack basic background skills [D ]top executives 34.According to the passage, the decisive factor in maintaining a firm's competitive advantage is ______.[A ]the introduction of new technologies [B ]the improvement of worker's basic skills [C ]the rational composition of professional and managerial employees [D ]the attachment of importance to the bottom half of the employees 35.What is the main idea of the passage?[A ]American firms are different from Japanese and German firms in human-resource management.[B ]Extensive retraining is indispensable to effective human-resource management.[C ]The head of human-resource management must be in the centralposition in a firm's hierarchy.[D ]The human-resource management strategies of American firms affect their competitive capacity.Text 4The public holiday on the last Monday of August marks,in most British minds, the unofficial end of summer.A vast migration takes place,as millions take advantage of the long weekend to visit seaside resorts or fly to Europe in a final sun-seeking cheer.Once the festivities are over, gloom descends:workers face four months of uninterrupted labor until Christmas Eve,their next official day off. This depression often provokes calls for more public holidays, and this year the clamor has been louder than usual.David Cameron's new Conservatives have been forced to deny rumors that they would recommend three new public holidays.经典考资祝福你考试成intended to inspire civil pride. On August 27th the Institute for Public PolicyResearch,a worthy think-tank,called for a new day off to “celebrate community heroes”.To the idlers, the case for more time off looks persuasive.By Europeanstandards at least,Britain is a nation of workaholics, with only the Austrianslabouring as many hours per week.Workers are entitled to 20working days of leave a year, the European Union's required minimum.Other countries are more generous.France and Denmark give at least 25days in leave, and many Finns get 30.Britons celebrate a miserably eight national holidays a year;in Europe only the Romanians, with five, have fewer.Even significant national events are celebrated grudgingly.:the British were given two days off to celebrate the queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002,but had to forfeit an existing public holiday to make up for it.National holidays are illogical as well as scarce. The queen's official birthday (a moveable holiday unrelated to her date of birth )is seen as a good excuse for a holiday in most of Britain's former colonies, but not in Her Majesty's homeland.Distribution is also badly distorted:seven of the eight holidays fall between December and May,leaving only August's to break up the rest of the year. There are plenty of things that a new holiday might celebrate.Patriotssuggest that England should honour St George (the patron saint of the place ),just as Scotland takes time off for St Andrew. The historically minded argue for a Magna Carta (The charter of liberties )day, whereas the politically correct suggest holidays celebrating “communities”and “volunteering”.Sadly, not everyone is keen on increasing public holidays. The CBI,abusiness lobbying group, points out that legal leave is already planned to rise to 28working days by 2009,and says that an extra public holiday would cost up to £6billion ($12.1billion ).In the face of such tough objections, concerns about leisure and the quality of life may seem vague and idealistic.36.What is the passage mainly talking about?[A ]Different attitudes towards public holidays in Britain.[B ]The increase of national holidays in Britain.[C ]The problem of public holidays in Britain.[D ]The call for more public holidays in Britain.37.The calls for more public holidays in Britain could be the results of______.[A ]the economic depression[B ]the 4-month work without a rest[C ]the long wait for an official day off[D ]recommendation of two ministers38.What does the word conclusions can we draw from the text?[A ]From June to December, there is only one British national holiday.[B ]British national holidays are unsatisfactory for the quantity and the allocation.[C ]The drink only two liters of water a day,but they consumeabout 3,000liters a day if the water that goes into their food is taken into account. The rich gulp down far more, since they tend to eat more meat, which takes far more water to produce than grains. So as the world's population grows and incomes rise, farmers will need a great deal more water to keep everyone fed:2,000more cubic kilometers a year by 2030,according to the International Water Management Institute (IWMI ).Yet in many farming regions, water is scarce and likely to get scarcer as global warming worsens. The world is facing not so much a food crisis as a water crisis, argues Colin Chartres,IWMI's director-general.The solution,Mr Chartres and others contend,is more efficient use of water or,as the sloganeers put it,“more crop per drop”.Some 1.2billion people live in places that are short of water.Farming accounts for roughly 70%of human water consumption. So when water starts to run out, farming tends to offer the bestpotential for thrift. But governments rarely charge farmers a market price for water. So they are usually more wasteful than other consumers—even though the value they create from the water is often less than households or industry would be willing to pay for it.The pressing need is to make water go further.Antoine Frérot, the head of the water division of Veolia Environment, promotes recycling of city wastewater to be used in industry or agriculture. This costs less and cuts pollution.Yet as Mr Frérot himself concedes, there are many even cheaper ways to save water. As much as 70%of water used by farmers never gets to crops, perhaps lost through leaky irrigation channels or by draining into rivers or groundwater.经典考资祝福你考试成savings.Farmers in poor countries can usually afford such things only if they are growing cash crops, says David Molden of IWMI.Even basic kit such as small rainwater tanks can be lacking.Ethiopia, for example, has only 38cubic meters of storage capacity per inhabitant, compared to almost 5,000in Australia.Yet modest water storage can hugely improve yields in rain-fed agriculture,by smoothing over short dry spells.Likewise, pumping water into natural aquifers for seasonal storage tends to be much cheaper than building a big dam,and prevents the great waste of water through evaporation.Agronomists are beginning to devise tools to help monitor the efficiency of water use. Some have designed algorithms that use satellite data on surface temperatures to calculate the rate at which plants are absorbing and transpiring water. That allows governments and development agencies to concentrate their efforts on the most prodigal areas.Raising yields does not always involve greater water consumption, especially when farms are inefficient. It would take little extra water to double cereal output in many parts of Africa,Mr Molden argues.IWMI reckons that some three-quarters of the extra food the world needs could be provided simply by bringing yields in poor countries closer to those of rich ones. That is more realistic than the absolute alternative:giving up meat and other thirsty products altogether.[A ]cultivating cash crops 41.The world is hard times讲解
Hard TimesIntroduction“Hard Times” is a novel written by Charles Dickens and published in 1854. It is set in Coketown, a fictional industrial town in England during the Victorian era. The novel explores the harsh realities of industrialization, the impact of utilitarianism on society, and the struggle for individuality and happiness.Industrialization and its ImpactThe novel portrays the detrimental effects of rapid industrialization on society. Coketown is depicted as a bleak and soulless place, dominated by factories and machinery. Dickens highlights the dehumanizing aspects of this industrial world through descriptions of polluted air, monotonous work, and overcrowded living conditions. The characters in “Hard Times” are deeply affected by this industrial environment. Factory workers like Stephen Blackpool face grueling labor conditions with long hours and low pay. They are trapped in a cycle of poverty and struggle to improve their lives.Utilitarianism as a Dominant PhilosophyUtilitarianism, a philosophy that prioritizes practicality andefficiency over emotions or individual needs, is a central theme in “Hard Times.” Mr.Gradgrind, one of the main characters, embodiesthis philosophy. He believes that facts and reason should guide all aspects of life, including education and personal relationships. However, Dickens criticizes utilitarianism throughout the novel. He argues that reducing human experiences to measurable quantities neglects the emotional and spiritual aspects of life. Characters like Louisa Gradgrind suffer from the lack of imagination and emotional fulfillment brought about by this philosophy.Struggle for IndividualityIn “Hard Times,” characters face various challenges to maintain their individuality amidst societal expectations. Louisa Gradgrind struggles with her lack of emotional development due to her upbringing based onfacts alone. She yearns for love and passion but finds herself trappedin an unhappy marriage.Josiah Bounderby represents another facet of the struggle for individuality. He presents himself as a self-made man and a symbol of success in industrial society. However, his true identity is revealed later in the novel, exposing his lies and challenging his carefully constructed image.Redemption and HopeDespite the prevailing hardships and challenges faced by the characters, “Hard Times” also offers themes of redemption and hope. Characterslike Stephen Blackpool demonstrate resilience and integrity, even in the face of adversity. Their actions inspire others to question societal norms and strive for a better future. The novel also highlights the importance of compassion and empathy. Gradually, characters like Mr. Gradgrind learn to embrace their emotions and recognize the value of human connection. Conclusion“Hard Times” is a powerful critique of industrial ization, utilitarianism, and societal expectations during the Victorian era. Through its vivid portrayal of characters’ struggles, Dickens emphasizes the importance of individuality, compassion, and emotional fulfillment in an industrialized world. This novel serves as a reminder that despite facing hard times, there is always hope for redemption and personal growth. It encourages readers to question societal norms and strive for a more balanced and humane existence.Note: This content has been written according to the task requirements provided while avoiding sensitive topics or vocabulary that may be considered sensitive in China.。

我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇1I have many bad habits, but there is one always makes me upset. I like nodding off in class. Nearly everyone will have this bad habit in summer. But I will nod off in every class and every season. Usually, I will nod off when the class begins about ten minutes. I hate this. I have tried my best to correct it. But I failed in the end. This habit troubles me lot.我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇2I like to play computer games so much, every night, I will sleep very late. Then the next day, I will be very tired and cant focus my attention on my study. I am so annoyed, I need to change my bad habit. So I decide to make some plans. I force myself to sleep before 11 oclock and play the computer games on weekends. Now it works slowly.我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇3As we all know everyone have his own habit,of course ,it contain two sides :good habits and bad habits.Nobody is perfect in every way. However sometime we didn't know how to judge from our habits, even some bad habit ,we always say it was a good habits with a persistent tone!As I mention from above, first of all ,we must find out what's bad habit for us and some bad habits we have that we didn'tknow. You know,Smoking is a bad habits we know and there is no doubt,it can't cause cancer. But you also can't deny some famous people have a habits like that. But did you know that, for them ,have a cigarette it means have a rest,it can relax theirselves. But it has many ways for relaxing! Why should i choose smoking? So some habits that ambiguous we don't know whether it was right. In my opinion don't have it, but if you have that habit ,treat it as usual with positive attitude.when it was turn to bad or tend to bad ,just give it up firmly!Apart from it,we know some bad habits like to bully people, bad personal hygiene(卫生) ,people don't keep his word, and so on ,if you one of them, just go to great lengths to give it up!The way to recognize what 's your bad habits, just open your heart ,accept criticize. The sooner you try,the less bad habits your have.Remember my words,my firends, find out your bad habits ,to overcome them!我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇4I have some habits, some are good, but some are bad.I like reading very much. From reading science books,I get a lot of knowledge. From reading novels,I lose myself in the stories.I like doing sports, too. It helps me keep healthy. Also I never put today's work till tomorrow. They are all my good habits. They help me a lot in my daily life. However,I also have some bad habits. For example, sometimes I do my homework slowly, and stay up till very late.During meals I prefer meat to vegetables. And sometimes I play computer games too long without having a reat. They are all harmful to my health. From now on I'll try to keep my good habits, and give up the bad ones. Then I'll live better.我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇5A habit is any action that we have performed so often that it becomes almost an involuntary response People spend countless hours and dollars each year attempting to break these bad habits and often do not have any success Change is hard work and there is no short cut to achieving it To effect a change in habits, one needs to bring the action back into the realm of consciousness and regain the ability to make choices In other words, what's the payoff for doing this seemingly negative thing? Since you've already classified this as a "bad" habit you may be tempted to say there isn't one There is always a payoff What's in it for you? You let off some steam and feel a little better for the moment What is it that you are losing by exercising your habit? This step should be easier Yelling at your kids is a bad habit because it leaves everybody feeling tense and tears down your children's self-esteem Leaving the dishes undone is a bad habit because your kitchen is a smelly mess When you look at it that way it doesn't seem like you are making very wise choices, does it? There has to be a better way It's no longer an involuntary act because now you know that you are making a choice every time you perform this action Which do you value more? Do you value more the relief you get by yelling at your kids or do you value their emotional well-being? Do you value more having more Internet time or having a pleasant place to live?Substituting better behaviors. The whole reason you formed your habits in the first place is that they filled a need As you break the old patterns you still need a way to fulfill these needs Instead of yelling at your kids youmight decide to go for a run every time you are feeling tense What the new habit is that you substitute isn't so important as whether you feel good about the choices you have made It's up to you Each time you begin to resume your old patterns the thought will pass through your mind that you are trading X for Y each time you perform that action What choices will you make? The one that makes you feel bad about yourself or the one that makes you feel good? It's up to you.我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇6Bad habits start growing on almost every one of us without being noticed. Once we realize the bad habits or once they are pointed out to us, it is a wise decision that we get rid of them immediately. But to get rid of a bad habit is not as easy a thing as we sometimes think. Here is how:To get rid of a bad habit,it is important that we first get to know how harmful the habit really is. Take the habit of smoking as an example. Obviously, smoking is harmful to one's health. It can result in lung cancer and heart attack. Besides, smoking is awasteof money. A heavy smoker spends almost as much money a day as he pays for his own meals. So if he can realize the danger and waste, it is likely that he may stop smoking at once.To get rid of a bad habit, it is essential that we also have a strong will. Let's again take the habit of smoking for example. Many smokers pick up the habit again soon after they give it up.A lot of them cannot tell how many times they have attempted to give up smoking and how many times they have failed to do so. Therefore, it is impossible to get rid of any bad habit if we change our minds constantly.Although it is not so easy to get rid of a bad habit, many people have succeeded in doing so, setting us good models. Weshould learn from these models and go out of our way to do away with our bad habits, whatever it takes.我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇7in our daily lives,we can find out many bad habits in others and also in ourselves, such as smoking in public, talking loudly while eating and crossing the street without paying attention to the traffic lights, and so on.there are more and more smoker now.they think of smoking as part of their lives.and often, they even smoke in the hospital or in the carriages where smoking is not allowed definitely, never considering the feelings of others.i think we shoud prevent them from smoking.because,it will do harm to both themselves and the persons around.as we know, talking loudly while eating is also a bad habit like smoking.sometimes,my classmates eat out together.to epress their ecitement, they would kid each other and then laugh loudly, though some others also having a dinner at the same place have epressed their bitterness and complaint.in my opinion, having a dinner party can of couse reinforces the friendship among the friends.but it wont be forgoten that we shouldnt lay others pain aside, while enjoying ourselves.other than those mentioned above,it sometimes could endanger ourlives crossing the street with a heavy traffic without paying enough attitions on lights.we can often see the scene where many policeman are solving a traffic accident and some persons have been deadlaying on the ground.thats too sad to see for us.but,it can be prevented before originally!facing these bad habits, what can we do?in my opinion,on one hand, itsnecessary to persuade others not to continue their"hobby";and on the other hand,we should set an eample toothers, and never have a try.我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇8Everyone has bad habits. First, many students go to school without breakfast. They hold the excuse that they have no enough time.[1] Without breakfast, I think, exerts a bad effect on our health,[2] for we need enough energy to contribute to study. Second, eating junk food is a commonphenomenon, which makes lots of students become fatter and weaker. Third, there are a small number of students willing to exercise, which lead to students easily fall into illness.[3] In a word, we should eat more healthy food and work out regularly. Only when we learn to lead a scientific lifestyle[4] can we build a strong body and spirit. That's all. Thank you!Monitor ××我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇12Certainly, every person has bad habits. Some people may be in the habit of speaking rudely; some tend to be deaf to others opinions; some are inclined to delay. However, there is no doubt that allowing to be controlled by bad habits does a great harm to personal development. It is not too much to say that it is a destructive behavior to allow to be controlled by bad habits while it is constructive to change unwanted habits. If bad habits are allowed to be developed, they will get out of control and become big obstacles to life or career. For example, a delayed-prone person will hardly restrain himself from missing the deadline. Understandably, he will have few chances to be entrusted with important tasks and then will barely be professionally experienced enough to gain promotion. On the contrary, it is beneficial to change unwanted habits and acquire good ones, because good habits can make people more competent and thus widen the door to success. In summary, bad habits will probably make it impossible for us to achieve our ambitions. Therefore, we should be alert to our bad habits and make persistent efforts to break them.我有一个坏习惯英语作文篇13I have some habbits, some are good, but some are bad.I like reading very much. Unit-3help yourself through the hard times
Help yourself through the hard times1 Some years ago I had what most would call the American Dream:a thriving construction business,a comfortable home, two new cars and a sailboat。
Moreover,I was happily married。
I had it all。
2 Then the stock market crashed, and suddenly no one was looking at the houses I’d built。
Months of murderous interest payment gobbled up my savings。
I couldn’t make ends meet and lay awake nights in a cold sweat。
Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse,my wife announced that she wanted a divorce。
3 With no idea what to do next,I resolved literally to “sail off into the sunset,”following the coastline form Connecticut to Florida。
But somewhere off New Jersey I turned due east, straight out to sea。
Hours later,I climbed up on the stern rail and watched the dark Atlantic slip beneath the hull。
