(10 points)About 40 percent of Americans think of themselves as shy, while only 20 percent say they have never suffered from shyness at some point in their lives. Shyness occurs when a person‟s apprehensions are so great that they1his making an expected or desired social response.2of shyness can be as minor as3to make eye contact when speaking to someone,4as major as avoiding conversations whenever possible.“Shy people tend to be too5with themselves,” said Jonathan Cheek, a psyc hologist, who is one of those at the forefront of current research on the topic “6, for a smooth conversation, you need to pay attention to the other person‟s cues7 he is saying and doing. But the shy person is full of8about how he seems to the other person, and so he often9cues he should pick up. The result is an awkward lag in the conversation. Shy people need to stop focusing on10and switch their attention to the other person.”11, shy people by and large have12social abilities than they think they do.13Dr. Cheek videotaped shy people talking to14, and then had raters (评估者) evaluate how socially skilled the people were, he found that, in the 15of other people, the shy group had few16problems. But when he asked the shy people themselves17they had done, they were unanimous in saying that they had been social flops (失败).“Shy people are their own18critics,” Dr. Cheek sai d19he added, shy people feel they are being judged more20 than they actually are, and overestimate how obvious their social anxiety is to others.1. Answer the questions below each passage by choosing A B C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text 1In the last decade a revolution has occurred in the way that scientists think about the brain. We now know that the decisions humans make can be traced to the firing patterns of neurons in specific parts of the brain. These discoveries have led to the field known as neuro-economics, which studies the brain‟s secrets to success in an economic environment that demands innovation and being able to do things differently from competitors. A brain that can do this is an iconoclastic (打破旧习的)one. Briefly, an iconoclast(偶像破坏者) is a person who does something that others say can‟t be done. This definition implies that iconoclasts are different from other people, but more precisely, it is their brains that are different in three distinct ways: perception, fear response, and social intelligence. Each of these three functions utilizes a different circuit in the brain. Naysayers might suggest that the brain is irrelevant, that thinking in an original, even revolutionary, way is more a matter of personality than brain function. But the field of neuro-economics was born out of the realization that the physical workings of the brain place limitations on the way we make decisions. By understanding these constraints, we begin to understand why some people march to a different drumbeat. The first thing to realize is that the brain suffers from limited resources. It has a fixed energy budget, about the same as a 40 watt light bulb, so it has evolved to work as efficiently as possible. This is where most people are impeded(阻碍) from being an iconoclast. For example, when confronted with information streaming from the eyes, the brain will interpret this information in the quickest way possible. Thus it will draw on both past experience and any other source of information, such as what other people say, to make sense of what it is seeing. This happens all the time. The brain takes shortcuts that work so well we are hardly ever aware of them. We think our perceptions of the world are real, but they are only biological and electrical rumblings(隆隆作响). Perception is not simply a product of what your eyes or ears transmit to your brain. More than the physical reality of photons(光子) or sound waves, perception is a product of the brain.Perception is central to iconoclasm. Iconoclasts see things differently to other people. Their brains do not fall into efficiency pitfalls as much as the average person‟s brain. Iconoclasts, either because they were born that way or through learning, have found ways to around the perceptual shortcuts that plague(折磨) most people. Perception is not something that is hardwired into the brain. It is a learned process, which is both a curse and an opportunity for change. The brain faces the fundamental problem of interpreting physical stimuli from the senses. Everything the brain sees, hears, or touches has multiple interpretations. The one that is ultimately chosen is simply the brain‟s best theory.21. Neuro-economics is a field of study which seeks to.[A]cause a change in how scientists understand brain chemistry.[B]understand how good decisions are made in the brain.[C]understand how the brain is linked to achievement in competitive fields.[D]trace the specific firing patterns of neurons in different areas of the brain.22. According to the writer, iconoclasts are distinctive because .[A]they create unusual brain circuits.[B]their brains function differently.[C]their personalities are distinctive.[D]they make decisions easily.23. According to the writer, the brain works efficiently because .[A]it uses the eyes quickly.[B]it interprets data logically.[C]it generates its own energy.[D]it relies on previous events.24. The writer says that perception is .[A]a combination of photons and sound waves.[B]a reliable product of what your senses transmit.[C]a result of brain processes.[D]a process we are usually conscious of.25. According to the writer, an iconoclastic thinker .[A]centralizes perceptual thinking in one part of the brain.[B]avoids cognitive traps.[C]has a brain that is hardwired for learning.[D]has more opportunities than the average person.Text 2Drinking wastewater? The idea may sound distasteful, but new federally funded research says more Americans are doing so-whether they know or not-and this reuse will be increasingly necessary as the U.S. population expands.Treated wastewater poses no greater health risks than existing water supplies and,in some cases, may be even safer to drink, according to a report released by the National Research Council. “We believe water reuse is an opti on to deal with growing water scarcity, especially in coastal areas,” says JorgDrewes, an engineering professor at the Colorado School of Mines. "This can be done reliably without putting the public at risk," he says, citing technological advances. He says it's a waste not to reuse the nation's wastewater, because almost all of it is treated before discharge. This water includes storm runoff as well as used water from homes, businesses and factories. In many places, the report says, the public does not realize it's drinking water that was treated after being discharged as wastewater somewhere upstream: For example, wastewater discharged into the Trinity River from Dallas/Fort Worth flows south into Lake Livingston, the source for Houston's drinking water.Despite the growing importance of this reuse, the report says there's been no systemic analysis of its extent nationwide since a 1980 study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Alan Roberson of the American Water Works Association says wastewater reuse is common, so the council's report is important but not surprising. Roberson expects this recycling will continue to increase, especially for irrigation and industrial needs. He says it will take longer to establish potable(适于饮用的) uses because of public nervousness about drinking wastewater, however treated “We have to do something to address water scarcity”,says Olga Naidenko,a senior scientist at the non-profit Environmental Working Group. “Less than 10 of potable water is used for drinking, cooking, showering or dishwashing. We flush it down the toilet, literally.” Technologies exist to safely treat the water, she says, although some are expensive. The report says water reuse projects tend to cost more, than most water conservation options but less than seawater desalinationand other supply alternatives. It calls on the EPA to develop rules that set safe national standards.26. As can be learned from Paragraph 1, drinking wastewater.[A] is to become a growing necessity[B] is well received by the Americans[C] has caused heated public debates[D] has become the dominant option27. Which of the following statements would JorgDrewes agree to?[A] Water reuse may eventually put the public at risk.[B] Water reuse is preferable to wasting water.[C] Water reuse is far from a solution to water shortage.[D] Water reuse is possible only after greater tech advances.28. Lake Livingston is mentioned to show that the public.[A] accepts the fact of drinking wastewater calmly[B] is concerned about the safety of the drinking water[C] does not believe that wastewater is safe to drink.[D] is not aware of the nature of their drinking water29. According to Alan Roberson, .[A] it is not safe to drink wastewater[B] the report has surprised the public[C] the report helps build up public confidence[D] the public has yet to accept drinking wastewater30. Olga Naidenko‟s remarks emphasize.[A] the recent progress[B] the existing problems[C] the new perspective[D] the potential risksText 3Do you remember all those years when scientists argued that smoking would kill us but the doubters insisted that we didn't know for sure? That the evidence was inconclusive, and thescience was uncertain. That the antismoking lobby was out to destroy our way of life and the government should stay out of the way? Lots of Americans bought that nonsense, and over three decades, some 10 million smokers went to early graves. There are upsetting parallels today, as scientists in one wave after another try to awaken us to the growing threat of global warming. The latest was a panel from the National Academy of Sciences, enlisted by the White House, to tell us that Earth's atmosphere is definitely warming and that the problem is largely man-made. The clear message is that we should get moving to protect ourselves. The president of the National Academy, Bruce Alberts, added this key point in the preface to the panel's report: "Science never has all the answer. But science does provide us with the best available guide to the future, and it is critical that our nation and the world base important policies on the best judgments that science can provide concerning the future consequences of present actions."Just as on smoking, voice now come from many quarters insisting that the science about global warming is incomplete, that it's OK to keep pouring fumes into the air until we know for sure. This is a dangerous game: by the time 100 percent people of the evidence is in, it may be too late. With the risks obvious and growing, a prudent people would take out an insurance policy now.Fortunately, the White House is starting to pay attention. But it's obvious that a majority of the president's advisers still don't take global warming seriously. Instead of a plan of action, they continue to press for more research — a classic case of "paralysis by analysis."To serve as responsible stewards of the planet, we must press forward on deeper atmospheric and oceanic research. But research alone is inadequate. If the Administration won't take the legislative initiative, Congress should help to begin fashioning conservation measures. A bill by Democratic Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia, which would offer financial incentives for private industry, is a promising start. Many see that the country is getting ready to build lots of new power plants to meet our energy needs. If we are ever going to protect the atmosphere, it is crucial that those new plants be environmentally sound.31. “Americans bought that nonsense” (Line 4, Paragraph 1) refers to Americans .[A]thought antismoking statements nonsense[B]have not realized the harm of smoking[C]have to pay for knowing the harm of smoking[D]believe what smoking-supporters have said32. According to Bruce Alberts, science can serve as .[A]a protector [B]a judge[C]a critic[D]a guide33. According to the author, the following is true except that .[A]careful environmental research should be carried out[B]the government should play a more active role in environmental issue[C]private industry should get priority over others[D]pollution reduction measures should be taken in energy factories34. According to the author, what should the Administration do about global warming?[A]Offer aid to build cleaner power plants[B]Raise public awareness of conservation[C]Press for further scientific research[D]Take some legislative measures35. The author associates the issue of global warming with that of smoking because .[A]they both suffered from the government's negligence.[B]a lesson from the latter is applicable to the former.[C]the outcome of the latter aggravates the former.[D]both of them have turned from bad to worse.Text 4It is 8.15 a.m. A flight lands at Melbourne‟s Tullamarine International Airport. Several hundred pieces of baggage are rushed from the plane onto a conveyor belt in the baggage reclaim annexe (附加物). Over the sound of roaring engines, rushing air vents and grinding generators, a dog barks. Florence, a sleek(圆滑的) black Labrador, wags her tail.Among the cavalcade(队伍) of luggage passing beneath Florence‟s all---smelling nose, is a nondescript(没有特色的) hardback suitcase. Inside the case, within styrofoam casing(泡沫盒子), packed in loose pepper and coffee, wrapped in freezer paper and heat-sealed in plastic, are 18 kilograms of hashish(大麻).The cleverly concealed drugs don‟t fool supper-sniffer Florence, and her persistent scratching at the case alerts her handler. Florence is one of a truly new breed: the product of what is perhaps the only project in the world dedicated to breeding dogs solely to detect drugs. Ordinary dogs have a 0.1% chance of making it in drug detection. The new breeding programme, run by the Australian Customs, is so successful that more than 50% of its dogs make the grade. And what began as a wholly practical exercise in keeping illegal drugs out of Australia may end up playing a role in an entirely different sphere---the comparatively esoteric(难懂的) world of neurobiology. It turns out that it‟s not Florence‟s nose that makes her a top drug dog, but her firm concentration, plus a few other essential traits. Florence could help neurobiologists to understand both what they call …attention processing‟, the brain mechanisms that determine what a person pays attention to and for how long, and its flip side, problems such as Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD). As many as 3 to 5% of children are thought to suffer from the condition in the US, where the incidence is highest, although diagnosis is often controversial. The Australian Customs has used dogs to find drugs since 1969. Traditionally, the animals came from pounds and private breeders. But, in 1993, fed up with the poor success rate of finding good dogs this way, John Vandeloo, senior instructor with the Detector Dog Unit, joined forces with Kath Champness, then a doctoral student at the University of Melbourne, and set up a breeding programme.36. The drugs in the suitcase .[A]were hidden inside the lining.[B]had pepper and coffee around them.[C]had previously been frozen.[D]had a special smell to repel dogs.37. Most dogs are not good at finding drugs because .[A]they don‟t work well with a handler.[B]they lack the right training.[C]the drugs are usually very well hidden.[D]they lack certain genetic qualities.38. Florence is a good drug detector because she .[A]has a better sense of smell than other dogs.[B]is not easily distracted.[C]has been specially trained to work at airports.[D]enjoys what she is doing.39. Dogs like Florence may help scientists understand .[A]how human and dog brains differ.[B]how people can use both sides of their brain.[C]why some people have difficulty paying attention.[D]the best way for people to maintain their focus.40. In 1993, the Australian Customs .[A]decided to use its own dogs again.[B] was successful in finding detector dogs.[C]changed the way it obtained dogs.[D]asked private breeders to provide more dogs.Part BDirections: Readingthe following text and answer the questions by choosing the most subtitle from the list A-F for each numbered paragraph (41-45). There are two extra subtitles which you do not need to use. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)The primary reason for such increases is what is known as …In-Season Abundance-Based Management‟. There are biologists throughout the state constantly monitoring adult fish as they show up to spawn. The biologists sit in streamside counting towers, study sonar, watch from airplanes, and talk to fishermen. The salmon season in Alaska is not pre-set. The fishermen know the approximate time of year when they will be allowed to fish, but on any given day, one or more field biologists in a particular area can put a halt to fishing. Even sport fishing can be brought to a halt. It is this management mechanism that has allowed Alaska salmon populations in the rest of the United States are increasingly considered threatened or even endangered. In 1999, the Marine Stewardship Council(MSC) commissioned a review of the Alaska salmon fishery. The Council, which was founded in 1996, certifies fisheries that meet high environmental standards, enabling them to use a label that recognizes their environmental responsibility. The MSC has established a set of criteria by which commercial fisheries can be judged. Recognizing the potential benefits of being identified as environmentally responsible, fisheries approach theCouncil requesting to undergo the certification process. The MSC then appoints a certification committee, composed of a panel of fisheries expert, which gathers information and opinions from fishermen, biologists, government officials, industry representatives, non-governmental organizations and others. Some observers thought the Alaska salmon fisheries would not have any chance of certification when, in the months leading up to MSC‟s final decision, salmon runs throughout western Alaska completely collapsed. In the Yukon and Kuskokwim rivers, Chinook and chum runs were probably the poorest since statehood; subsistence communities throughout the region, who normally have priority over commercial fishing, were devastated. The crisis was completely unexpected, but researchers believe it had nothing to do with impacts of fisheries. Rather, they contend, it was almost certainly the result of climate shift, prompted in part by cumulative effects of the ElNino phenomenon on Pacific Ocean temperatures, culminating in a harsh winter in which huge numbers of salmon eggs were frozen. It would have meant the end as far as the certification process was concerned. However, the state reacted quickly, closing down all fisheries, even those necessary for subsistence purposes. In September 2000, MSC announced that the Alaska salmon fisheries qualified for certification. Seven companies producing Alaska salmon were immediately granted permission to display the MSC logo on their products. Certification is for an initial period of five years, with an annual review to ensure that the fishery is continuing to meet the required standards.Section III Translation46. Directions: In this section there is a passage in English. Translate the following passage intoChinese and write yourtranslation on ANSWER SHEET 2. (15points)Industrial safety does not just happen. Companies with low accident rates plan their sefteyprograms, work hard to organize them, and continue working to keep them alive and active. When the work is well done, a climate of accident-free operations is established where time lost due to injuries is kept at a minimum.Successful safety programs may differ greatly in the emphasis places on certain aspects of the program. Some place great emphasis on mechanical guarding. Others stress safe work practices by observing rules or regulations. Still others depend on an emotional appeal to the worker. But, there are certain basic ideas that must be used in every program if maximum results are to be obtained. There can be no question about the value of a safety program. From a financial standpoint alone, safety pays off. The fewer the injury claims, the better the workman‟s insurance rate. This may mean the difference between operating at a profit or at a loss.Section IV WritingPart A47. Directions:Your friend Mary Brown will go to Washington D.C. Next month.
