Unit 1 Living well一、阅读理解Hillary Clinton promised On October 30, 2016 that she would not be “knocked off course” in the election's final days, as she sought to push past a new FBI email inquiry that delivered a late jolt(震动) to her race against Republican Donald Trump.“I'm not stopping now, we're just getting warmed up,” Clinton declared during a packed rally (集会)with supporters in Florida. “We're not going to be distracted, no matter what our opponents throw at us.”Trump campaigned in Las Vegas at a club owned by billionaire GOP major donor Sheldon Adelson and accused the Justice Department, without offering evidence, of trying to protect Clinton following the FBI's discovery of new emails that could be related to its investigation into Clinton's use of a private email server.“Hillary has nobody but herself to blame for her mounting legal problems,” Trump said during a rally.Meanwhile, federal investigators secured a warrant (权证)to examine the newly discovered emails related to Hillary Clinton's private server, media reported on Sunday, as a prominent Democrat accused FBI Director James Comey of breaking the law by trying to influence the election. The warrant will allow the FBI to examine the emails to see if they are relevant to its investigation into the private email server usedfor government work by Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee, while she was secretary of state from 2009 to 2013.Comey came under heavy pressure from Democrats on Sunday to quickly provide details of the emails, as Clinton allies worried the controversy could extend beyond the Nov 8 election and cast a shadow over a Clinton transition if she wins the White House.Comey's disclosure of the email discovery in a letter to Congress on Friday plunged(使陷入) the final days of the White House race between Clinton and Republican Donald Trump into a state of confusion and disorder.Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid sent a letter to Comey on Sunday suggesting he violated the Hatch Act, which bans the use of a federal government position to influence an election.1.What is James Comey?A.Senate Democratic Leader.B.A prominent Democrat.C.FBI Director.D.Head of the Justice Department.2.What has FBI made a discovery of?A.Clinton's private letters written to a foreign country.B.Clinton's accepting a lot of money from a businessman.C.Clinton's bad health conditions that may affect her administration.D.Clinton's new emails through the use of a private email server.3.The possible meaning of the underlined word “ controversy ” in Para.7 is ________.A.a successful ending of a struggle or contestB.a lot of argument about somethingC.the ability and strength to do active physical thingsD.something new and difficult which requires great effort and determination4.The best title for the news report can be “________” .A.Clinton promises to stay course, Trump boostedB.Trump accuses the Justice Department of trying to protect ClintonC.Trump says Hillary should blame for her mounting legal problemsD.White House race between Clinton and Republican Donald Trump参考答案: 1.C; 2.D; 3.B; 4.A解析: 1.[事实判断题。

Unit 1 Living well 专题练习I.阅读理解A(2019·郑州第三次质量预测)US student Vanessa Tahay stands out from the other teenagers in her school. Her skin is dark and her accent is thick. If you ask her, she will tell you these are the things she is proudest of. Tahay is a poet, and at 18 she was considered among the best in Los Angeles. When she is on the stage, audiences often go silent. They also laugh, shout and cry. But this doesn't come easily for someone who comes from a village that sits at the base of a huge mountain range in Central America. When she first appeared at school, she was teased by others for being short and different. She never spoke, so they called her “mouse”.“How do I defend myself?” Tahay thought. “I don't know how.”“Keep going,” her mother would tell her. “At some point, you'll learn.”She spent hours after school and on weekends watching the same DVD: English Without Barriers.Tahay's elder brother, Elmer, persuaded her to go to the afterschool poetry club.In the last six years, her English teacher Laurie Kurnick has turned Cleveland Charter High School's poetry program into one of the most respected in the city. Her team draws from the likes of urence, Pat Mora and Kendrick Lamar to create poems about their own lives. The poems focus on many things — some funny, some painful. The first time Tahay read the group's poems, she was wild with joy. “I wish I could write like that,” she thought. “I want to say something.”She wrote her first poem about her first year in America. She called it Invisible. The day her turn came to recite poems in front of the team, she broke down crying. She cried for 15 minutes. “I had so much held in,” Tahay said. “I couldn't even finish it.”But she kept at it despite her lessthanperfect grammar, spelling and diction (措辞). Still, she wouldn't tell her friends about her poetry because she worried they would make fun of her.But with time, her poems changed her. “They gave me pride,” Tahay said. “They told me that I'm worth something.”“She had this innocence,” Kurnick said. “This willingness to be genuine shows you things you don't ever see.”1.What did Tahay's mother suggest she do when she was teased by others?A.Fight with them bravely.B.Report them to her teachers.C.Ignore them and keep going.D.Try hard to make friends with them.2.What are the themes of Laurie Kurnick and her team's poems?A.Their admiration for the great poets.B.Their appreciation of natural beauty.C.Their expectations of a better future.D.Funny and painful stories about their lives.3.How did Tahay probably feel when she first read the group's poems?A.She was cold.B.She was excited.C.She was nervous.D.She was frightened.4.How did Tahay benefit from writing poems?A.She felt more confident about herself.B.She won many national poetry competitions.C.She became the first student poet in the city.D.She improved her grammar and spelling greatly.BWhen I was a small boy, I noticed that though many of the adults around me were wealthy and educated, they were not always happy and this sometimes led them to behave in ways, which I, as a child, thought strange. As a result of that, I decided to try to understand what happiness was and how best to achieve it. It was not surprising, then, that I decided to study psychology. On arrival at the university, I was disappointed to find that academic psychologists were trying to understand human behaviour by studying rats in a lab. I felt that there must be other more useful ways of learning how we think and feel.I decided to build my career on trying to discover what made others happy. I started out by studying creative people such as musicians, artists and athletes because they were people who devoted their lives to doing what they wanted to do, rather than things that just brought them financial rewards.Later, I expanded the study by inventing a system called “the experience sampling method”. Ordinary people were asked to keep an electronic pager (传呼机) for a week which gave out a beeping sound eight times a day. Every time it did so, they wrote down where they were, what they were doing, how they felt and how much they were concentrating. This system has now been used on more than 10,000 people, and the answers are consistent: as with creative people, ordinary people are happiest when concentrating hard.I found that the most obvious cause of happiness is intense concentration. This must be the main reason why activities such as music, art, literature, sports and other forms of leisure have survived. In order to concentrate, whether you're reading a poem or building a sandcastle, what you need is a challenge that matches your ability. The way to remain continually happy, therefore, is to keep finding new opportunities to improve your skills. This may mean learning to do your job better or faster, or doing other more difficult jobs. As you grow older, you have to find new challenges which are more appropriate to your age.5.What led the author to study psychology?A.His determination to become rich.B.His observation of adults.C.His unhappy childhood.D.His interest in strangers.6.Who were the author's study subjects at the start of his career?A.People having deep affection for their career.B.People very aware of their personal life.C.People successful in acquiring wealth.D.People with more freedom.7.The author used his system to show that ________.A.people's happiness depends on who they are withB.people are happier when they focus on an activityC.creative people are happier than ordinary peopleD.ordinary people find it hard to concentrate8.According to the text, people concentrate more when they are doing ________.A.something strange and enjoyableB.something difficult but possibleC.things appropriate to their agesD.many things at the same timeCIt was September 5, 2009. Lexi Youngberg, then 16, was on vacation in Spring Lake, Michigan. She was riding on a small boat with her friends, Robby and Kaitlin, when a motorboat crashed into them. The sound was so loud that other boaters heard it over the roar (轰鸣声) of their engines. The teen boy who had been driving the motorboat stepped on the gas by mistake. Kaitlin, 23, had only small cuts, but Robby, 15, had been badly cut by the propeller (螺旋桨). And Lexi was floating facedown in the water. When one boater swam to Lexi, she was breathing. However, she was unconscious. She had a deep cut on her head. And the lower part of her left leg, just below the knee, was gone. A doctor rode up in another boat and tried to save Robby, but it was too late. For Lexi, the good news is that she survived while the bad news is that she lost one of her legs forever. When Lexi looked at her swollen leg, she felt hopeless. But as time passed, Lexi began to feel stronger. She was grateful that her life had been spared, and she decided to make the most of it. At the end of November 2009, Lexi met with Dr. John Hardy, who was an expert at making artificial legs. She hoped he would help her get back to doing the things she loved.Three years after the accident, Lexi moved on with her life. In spring 2011, she joined a soccer team in her school. That fall, she started college. Lexi is thankful that she can still do the things she loves. One day, she wants to be a physical therapist (理疗师) and work with those with disabilities. But first she plans to compete in the Paralympics. Whatever Lexi decides to do, one thing is certain: Nothing is going to get in her way.9.How was Lexi in the accident?A.She had a small cut on her head.B.She was unable to feel anything.C.She was badly cut by the propeller.D.She lost the lower parts of her legs.10.What's the right order of the events about Lexi?a.She went to college.b.She met with Dr. John Hardy.c.She had one of her legs removed.f.She played with her friends on a boat.e.She joined a soccer team in her school.A.d,c,b,e,aB.c,b,a,e,dC.d,c,e,a,bD.c,d,a,e,b11.It can be inferred from the text that Lexi was ________.A.generousB.strongmindedC.creativeD.warmhearted12.The main purpose of the text is to ________.A.persuade us not to go boatingB.entertain us with sports newsC.tell us the story of a brave teenD.show how to survive an accidentII.短文改错My favorite sport is play basketball. Unit 1 Living well李仕才一、阅读理解。

(2018·河南洛阳高三第一次统考)All over the world mothers and fathers teach their children manners.Other children may have manners that are not like yours. There are all kinds of manners. Many years ago, children who had good manners were seen and not heard. They kept quite quiet if grownups were talking. Today, wellmannered children have more freedom.Sometimes good manners in one place are bad manners in other places. Suppose you are a visitor in the land of Mongolia. Some friends ask you to eat with them. What kind of manners do they want you to have? They want you to give a loud “burp(打嗝)” after you finish eating. Burping would show that you like your food. In some countries, if you give a loud burp, you are told to say “Excuse me, please.” In many places people like to eat together. But in some parts of Polynesia it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. People show good manners by turning their backs on others while they eat. What are manners like in an East African town? The people try not to see you. They are being polite. You may see a friend. He may not see you at all. If you are polite, you will sit down beside him. You will wait until he finishes what he is doing. Then he will talk to you.Suppose you visit a friend in Arabia. You should walk behind the other tents until you come to his tent.If you pass in front of the other tents, you will be asked into each one.The people will ask you to eat with them. And it is bad manners if you say no.Manners are different all over the world. But it is good to know that all manners begin in the same way.People need ways to show that they want to be friends.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了世界上一些地方的礼仪。

Gregory Talley used to sleep in a park or under a bridge. The 50-year-old has been homeless for more than 10 years."It is hard. It's hard to live homeless. When Michell began working with New Hope Housing 25 years ago, its three shelters had about 80 beds. Now, it has 350 beds and serves about 1,500 homeless people every year. She has expanded the program beyond just providing beds for the night."We do outreach(拓展), we do prevention, we do permanent housing, we do transitional housing. The story of Sir Nicholas Winton is the one that you would imagine could only happen on the silver screen. Sir Nicholas Winton was a British man who went to heroic efforts, potentially putting himself at risk, during World War II. Sir Winton was responsible for ensuring the safety of six hundred and sixty-nine Jewish children by aiding their escape from countries occupied by Nazis. Finally, the Jewish children were brought to England where he worked to make sure families in his native country would help the kids by taking them into their homes.Recently, this unbelievable story has again been making the rounds on the Internet, particularly after a rerun of the BBC show called “That’s Life”, which featured Sir Winton. People around the world were moved at the details of the story, with saying it to be the best story they’ve ever seen.Sir Winton kept his entire plan completely secret, even his wife had no idea about his planning until fifty years later. After the war, years passed and many people remained in the dark about Sir Winton’s extraordinary achievement. Some fifty years later, his wife Greta was searching in their house and discovered a Winton’s notebook which documented the names of all the children. She worked with BBC and they produced a TV episode (插曲) of their program “That’s Life” that served as an honor for Sir Winton’s work.In 2003, Sir Winton was knighted by the Queen of England for his work. He also was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. He also had a smallplanet named after him by Czech astronomers. Sir Winton died peacefully in his sleep at the old age of one hundred and six, in 2015. Leaders around the world paid tribute (悼念).

Living well***阅读理解。

Recently I and other Red Cross volunteers met a group of victims from Hurricane Katrina. We were there, as mental health professionals, to offer "psychological first aid" and I was struck by the simple healing power of presence. As we walked in the gate to the shelter, we were greeted with a burst of gratitude (感激) from the first person we met. I felt appreciated, but also guilty, because I hadn’t really done anything yet.I first realized the power of presence many years ago when a friend’s mother passed away unexpectedly. I had received a call saying she had just passed away. I wanted to rush down there immediately, but didn’t want to intrude (打扰) on this very personal period of sadness. I was torn about what to do. Another friend with me then said, "Just go. Just be there." I did, and I will never regret it.Since then, I have not hesitated to be in the presence of others. Once I sat at the bedside of a young man suffering from the pain of his AIDS — related dying. He was not awake, and obviously unaware of others’presence. However, the atmosphere was by no means solemn. His family, playing guitars and singing, allowed him to be present with them as though he were still fully alive. In my life, I am repeatedly struck by the healing power of presence. In it, none of us are truly alone. It is not only something we give to others but also changes me for the better.1.Why were the hurricane victims grateful to the author?A. He built shelters for them.B. He gave immediate first aid to them.C. He came to stay with them.D. He brought mental health professionals.2.What did the author do when his friend’s mother passed away?A. He hesitated over whether to go.B. He went to his friends’ at once.C. He knew what to do instantly.D. He decided not to disturb.3.What does the underlined word "solemn" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Heavy but warm.B. A little sad but cosy.C. Relaxing and delightful.D. Very serious and unhappy.4.What has the author learned from his experience?A. A friend in need is a friend indeed.B. Being present can make a big difference.C. The family harmony is the happiest thing in life.D. Being a volunteer can make one’s life more significant【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

For many people, being on the job might just sound like a picnic compared to a day at home filled with housework, meals and childcare.Even for those with a happy family life, home can sometimes feel more taxing than work.In a new study, researchers at Penn State University found significantly and consistently lower levels of cortisol(皮质醇) released in response to stress,in a majority of subjects when they were at work compared to when they were at home. This was true for both men and women, and parents and people without children. Both men and women showed less stress at work. But women were more likely to report feeling happier there.Men were more likely to feel happier at home.Experts say there are other reasons why work is less s tressful than home for many.“Paid work is more valued in society,” says Sarah Damaske, the lead researcher on the study.“Household work is boring and not particularly rewarding.”We get better at our job with time and the increased competence means less stress and more rewards,Yet none of us,no matter how long we've been doing it,ever truly feels like an expert at parenting or even at marriage. The support and friendship of coworkers also offer stress relief. At home, meanwhile, stress spreads and accumulates quickly.“That's the reason why most housewives wish they were the bread earners,” Dr.Damaske says.Much of the advice to families and couples includes the warning to leave work stress at the office and even to change our mindset from work to home, for example,a walk around the block. The recent findings, though, suggest our home life, not our attitude, might be due for some change.1.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “taxing”?A.stressful B.cheerfulC.worthwhile D.rewarding2.What did the research in the second paragraph prove?A.Men felt better at home.B.Women felt they had less time.C.Women were easier to feel happier.D.Most people felt more stress at home.3.What do most people think of work at the office?A.It is competitive.B.It improves ability.C.It can't relieve stress.D.It doesn't always pay off.4.According to the recent findings, what should we change to solve the problem mentioned?A.Our attitude. D.Our mindset.C.Our home life. D.Our working style.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了一项研究,该研究表明越来越多的人认为上班比在家做家务、做饭和带孩子更轻松一些。
