PART V READING COMPREHENSION [25 MIN]In this section there are four passages followed by questions or unfinished statements, each with foursuggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that you think is the best answer.TEXT AAt some time in your life you may have a strong desire to do something strange or terrible. However, chances are that you don’t act on your impulse, but let it pass instead. You know that to commit the action iswrong in some way and that other people will not accept your behavior.Perhaps the most interesting thing about the phenomenon of taboo behavior is how it can change over theyears within the same society, how certain behavior and attitudes once considered taboo can become perfectlyacceptable and natural at another point in time. Topics such as death, for example, were once considered soupsetting and unpleasant that it was a taboo to even talk about them. Now with the publication of important bookssuch as On Death and Dying and Learning to Say Goodbye, people have become more aware of the importance ofexpressing feelings about death and, as a result, are more willing to talk about this taboo subject. One of the newest taboos in American society is the topic of fat. Unlike many other taboos, fat is topic thatAmericans talk about constantly. It’s not taboo to talk about fat; it’s taboo to be fat. The “In the work world, most companies prefer youthful-looking, trim executives to sell their image as well as theirproducts to the public. The thin look is associated with youth, vigor, and success. The fat person, on the otherhand, is thought of as lazy and lacking in energy, self-discipline, and self-respect. In an image-conscious societylike the U.S., thin is “in”, fat is “out”.It’s not surprising, then, that millions of Americans have become obsessed with staying slim andThe pursuit of a youthful physical appearance is not, however, the sole reason for America’s fas and exercise. Recent research has shown the critical importance of diet and exercise for personal health. As inmost technologically developed nations, the life-style of North Americans has changed dramatically during thecourse of the last century. Modern machines do all the physical labor that people were once forced to do by hand.Cars and buses transport us quickly from point to point. As a result of inactivity and disuse, peopleeasily become weak and vulnerable to disease. In an effort to avoid such a fate, millions of Americans arespending more of their time exercising.1.From the passage we can infer taboo is__.A.a strong desire to do something strange or terrible.B.a crime committed on impulse.C.behavior considered unacceptable in society’s eyes.D.an unfavorable impression left on other people.2.Based on the ideas presented in the passage we can conclude “being fat” __ in American society.A.will always remain a taboo.B.is not considered a taboo by most people.C.has long been a taboo.D.may no longer be a taboo some day.3.The topic of fat is __ many other taboo subjects.A.the same asB.different fromC.more popular thanD.less often talked about than.4.In the U.S., thin is “in”, fat is “out”, this means__.A.thin is “inside”, fat is “outside”.B.thin is “diligent”, fat is “lazy”.C.thin is “youthful”, fat is “spiritless”.D.thin is “fashionable”, fat is “unfashionable”.5.Apart from this new understanding of the correlation between health and exercise, the main reason thepassage gives for why so many Americans are exercising regularly is__.A.their changed life-style.B.their eagerness to stay thin and youthful.C.their appreciation of the importance of exercise.D.the encouragement they have received from their companies.TEXT BThe discovery of the Antarctic not only proved one of the most interesting of all geographical adventures, butcreated what might be called “the heroic age of Antarctic exploration”. By their tremendous heroism, m Shakleton, Scott, and Amundsen caused a new continent to emerge from the shadows, and yet that heroic age, little more than a century old, is already passing. Modern science and inventions are revolutionizing the endurance, future journeys into these icy wastes will probably depend on motor vehicles equipped with caterpillar tractionrather than on the dogs that earlier discoverers found so invaluable and hardly comparable.Few realize that this Antarctic continent is almost equal in size to South America, and enormous field ofwork awaits geographers and prospectors. The coasts of this continent remain to be accurately charted, and themaping of the whole of the interior presents a formidable task to the cartographers who undertake the work. Oncetheir labors are completed, it will be possible to prospect the vast natural resources which scientists believe willfurnish one of the largest treasure hoards of metals and minerals the world has yet known, and almostinexhaustible sources of copper, coal, uranium, and many other ores will become available to man. Suchdiscoveries will usher in an era of practical exploitation of the Antarctic wastes. The polar darkness which hides this continent for the six winter months will be defeated by huge batteries oflight, and make possible the establishing of air-fields for the future inter-continental air services by making theseareas as light as day. Present flying routes will be completely changed, for the Antarctic refueling bases will makeflights from Australia to South America comparatively easy over the 5,000 miles journey. The climate is not likely to offer an insuperable problem, for the explorer Admiral Byrd has shown that theclimate is possible even for men completely untrained for expeditions into those frozen wastes. Some of hisparties were men who had never seen snow before, and yet he records that they survived the rigors of theAntarctic climate comfortably, so that, provided that the appropriate installations are made, we may assume thathuman beings from all countries could live there safely. Byrd even affirms that it is probably the most healthyclimate in the world, for the intense cold of thousands of years has sterilize this continent, and rendered itabsolutely germfree, with the consequences that ordinary and extraordinary sickness and diseases from which mansuffers in other zones with different climates are here utterly unknown. There exist no problems of conservationand preservation of food supplies, for the latter keep indefinitely without any signs of deterioration; it may evenbe that later generations will come to regard the Antarctic as the natural storehouse for the whole world.Plans are already on foot to set up permanent bases on the shores of this continent, and what so few years agoof human life and endeavor.was regarded as a “dead continent” now promises to be a most active center6.When did man begin to explore the AntarcticA.About 100years ago.B.In this century.C.At the beginning of the 19th century.D.In 1798.7.What must the explorers be, even though they have modern equipment and techniquesA.Brave and toughB.Stubborn and arrogant.C.Well-liked and humorous.D.Stout and smart.8.The most healthy climate in the world is___.A.in South America.B.in the Arctic Region.C.in the Antarctic Continent.D.in the Atlantic Ocean.9.What kind of metals and minerals can we find in the AntarcticA.Magnetite, coal and ores.B.Copper, coal and uranium.C.Silver, natural gas and uranium.D.Aluminum, copper and natural gas.10.What is planned for the continentA.Building dams along the coasts.B.Setting up several summer resorts along the coasts.C.Mapping the coast and whole territory.D.Setting up permanent bases on the coasts.TEXT CWithout regular supplies of some hormones our capacity to behave would be seriously impaired; withoutothers we would soon die. Tiny amounts of some hormones can modify moods and actions, our inclination to eator drink, our aggressiveness or submissiveness, and our reproductive and parental behavior. And hormones domore than influence adult behavior; early in life they help to determine the development of bodily form and mayeven determine an individual’s behavioral capacities. Later in life the changing outputs of some endocrine glandsand the body’s changing sensitivity to some hormones are essential aspects of the phenomena of aging.Communication within the body and the consequent integration of behavior were considered the exclusiveprovince of the nervous system up to the beginning of the present century. The emergence of endocrinology as aseparate discipline can probably be traced to the experiments of Bayliss and Starling on the hormone secretion. This substance is secreted from cells in the intestinal walls when food enters the stomach; it travels through thebloodstream and stimulates the pancreas to liberate pancreatic juice, which aids in digestion. By showing thatspecial cells secret chemical agents that are conveyed by the bloodstream and regulate distant target organs ortissues. Bayliss and starling demonstrated that chemical integration could occur without participation of thenervous system. The term “hormone” was first used with reference to secretion. Starling derived the term from the Greekhormone, meaning “to excite or set in motion. The term “endocrine” was introduced shortly thereafter “Endocrine” is used to refer to glands that secret products into the bloodstream. The term “e with “exocrine”, which is applied to glands that secret their products though ducts to the site of action. Examplesof exocrine glands are the tear glands, the sweat glands, and the pancreas, which secrets pancreatic juice through aduct into the intestine. Exocrine glands are also called duct glands, while endocrine glands are called ductless.11.What is the author’s main purpose in the passage?A.To explain the specific functions of various hormones.B.To provide general information about hormones.C.To explain how the term “hormone” evolved.D.To report on experiments in endocrinology.12.The passage supports which of the following conclusions?A.The human body requires large amounts of most hormones.B.Synthetic hormones can replace a person’s natural supply of hormones if necessary.C.The quantity of hormones produced and their effects on the body are related to a person’sD.The short child of tall parents very likely had a hormone deficiency early in life.13.It can be inferred from the passage that before the Bayliss and Starling experiments, most people believed thatchemical integration occurred only___.A.during sleep.B.in the endocrine glands.C.under control of the nervous system.D.during strenuous exercise.14.The word “liberate” could best be replaced by which of the following?A.EmancipateB.DischargeC.SurrenderD.Save15.According to the passage another term for exocrine glands is___.A.duct glandsB.endocrine glandsC.ductless glandsD.intestinal glands.TEXT DIf the old maxim that the customer is always right still has meaning, then the airlines that ply the worldbusiest air route between London and Paris have a flight on their hands. The Eurostar train service linking the UK and French capitals via the Channel Tunnel is winning customersin increasing numbers. In late May, it carried its one millionth passenger, having run only a limited servicebetween London, Paris and Brussels since November 1994, starting with two trains a day in each direction to Parisand Brussels. By 1997, the company believes that it will be carrying ten million passengers a year, and continue togrow from there. From July, Eurostar steps its service to nine trains each way between London and Paris, and five betweenLondon and Brussels. Each train carries almost 800 passengers, 210 of them in first class. The airlines estimate that they will initially lose around 15%-20% of their London-Paris traffic to therailways once Eurostar starts a full service later this year (1995), with 15 trains a day each way. A similar servicewill start to Brussels. The damage will be limited, however, the airlines believe, with passenger numbers returningto previous levels within two to three years. In the short term, the damage caused by the 1 million people-levels traveling between London and Paris andBrussels on Eurostar trains means that some air services are already suffering. Some of the major carriers say thattheir passenger numbers are down by less than 5% and point to their rivals-Particularly Air France-as havingsuffered the problems. On the Brussels route, the railway company had less success, and the airlines reportanything from around a 5% drop to no visible decline in traffic. The airlines' optimism on returning traffic levels is based on historical precedent. British Midland, forexample, points to its experience on Heathrow Leeds Bradford service which saw passenger numbers fold by 15%when British Rail electrified and modernized the railway line between London and Yorkshire. Two years later, travel had risen between the two destinations to the point where the airline was carrying record numbers of passengers.16.British airlines confide in the fact that__.A.they are more powerful than other European airlines.B.their total loss won’t go beyond a drop of 5% passengers.C.their traffic levels will return in 2-3 years.D.traveling by rail can never catch up with traveling by air.17.The author’s attitude towards the drop of passengers may be described as__.A.worried.B.delightedC.puzzled.D.unrivaled.18.In the passage, British Rail (Para 6) is mentioned to__.A.provide a comparison with Eurostar.B.support the airlines’ optimism.C.prove the inevitable drop of air passengers.D.call for electrification and modernization of the railway.19.The railway’s Brussels route is brought forth to show that__.A.the Eurostar train service is not doing good business.B.the airlines can well compete with the railway.C.the Eurostar train service only caused little damage.D.only some airlines, such as Air France, are suffering.20.The passage is taken from the first of an essay, from which we may well predict that in the following part theauthor is going to__.-mindedness.A.praise the airlines’ clearB.warn the airlines of high-speed rail services.C.propose a reduction of London/Paris flights.D.advise the airlines to follow British Midland as their model.答案: 1-5 CDBDB 6-10 AACBD 11-15 BDCBA 16-20 ABCB。

You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. The January fashion show, called FutureFashion , exemplified how far green design has come. Organized by the New York-based nonprofit Earth Pledge, the show inspired many topdesigners to work with sustainable fabrics for the first time. Several have since made pledges to include organic fabrics in their lines. The designers who undertake green fashion still face many challenges. Scott Hahn, cofounder with Gregory of Rogan and Loomstate, which uses all-organic cotton, says high-quality sustainable materials can still be tough to fine . “Most designers with existing labels are finding there aren’t comparable fabrics that can just replace what you’re doing and shat your customers are used to,” he says. For example, o rganic cotton and non-organic cotton are virtually indistinguishable once woven into a dress. But some popular synthetics, like stretch nylon, still have few eco-friendly equivalents. Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support. Last year the influential trade show Designers & Agents stopped charging its participation fee for young green entrepreneurs(企业家) who attend its two springtime shows in Los Angeles and New York and gave special recognition to designers whose collections are at least 25% sustainable . It now counts more than 50 green designers, up from fewer than a dozen two years ago. This week Wal-Mart is set to announce a major initiative aimed at helping cotton farmers go organic: it will buy transitional(过渡型的) cotton at higher prices , thus helping to expand the supply of a key sustainable material . “Mainstream is about to occur,”says Hahn. Some analysts(分析师) are less sure . Among consumers, only 18%are even aware that ecofashion exists, up from 6% four years ago. Natalie Hormilla, a fashion writer, is an example of the unconverted consumer, when asked if she owned any sustainable clothe s, she replied: “Not that I’m aware of.” Like most consumers, she finds little time to shop, and when she does, she’s on the hunt f or “cute stuff that isn’t too expensive.” By her own admission, green just isn’t yet on her mind. But –thanks to the combined efforts of designers, retailers and suppliers –one day it will be.57. What is said about FutureFashion?A) It inspired many leading designers to start going green.B) It showed that designers using organic fabrics would go far.C) It served as an example of how fashion shows should be organized.D) It convinced the public that fashionable clothes should be made durable.58. According to Scott Hahn, one big challenge to designers who will go organic is that .A) much more time is needed to finish a dress using sustainable materials .B) they have to create new brands for clothes made of organic materials .C) customers have difficulty telling organic from non-organic materials .D) quality organic replacements for synthetics are not readily available .59. We learn from Paragraph 3 that designers who undertake green fashion .A) can attend various trade shows free .B) are readily recognized by the fashion worldC) can buy organic cotton at favorable prices .D) are gaining more and more support .60. What is Natalie Hormilla’s attitude toward ecofashion?A) She doesn’t seem to care a bout it. C) She is doubtful of its practical value.B) She doesn’t think it is sustainable D) She is very much opposed to the idea61. What does the author think of green fashion?A) Green products will soon go mainstream.B) It has a very promising future.C) Consumers have the final say.D) It will appeal more to young people.Passage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.Scientists have devised a way to determine roughly where a person has lived using a strand(缕) of hair , a technique that could help track the movements of criminal suspects or unidentified murder victims .The method relies on measuring how chemical variations in drinking water show up in people’s hair.“You’re what you eat and drink, and that’s recorded in you hair,” said Thure Cerling, a geologist at the University of Utah. While U.S diet is relatively identical, water supplies vary. The differences result from weather patterns. The chemical composition of rainfall changes slightly as raid clouds move. Most hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water are stable , but traces of both elements are also present as heavier isotopes (同位素) . The heaviest raid falls first .As a result, storms that form over the Pacific deliver heavier water to California than to Utah.Similar patterns exist throughout the U.S. By measuring the proportion of heavier hydrogen and oxygen isotopes along a strand of hair, scientists can construct a geographic timeline. Each inch of hair corresponds to about two months.Cerling’s team collected tap water samples from 600 cities and constructed a mop of the regional differences. They checked the accuracy of the map by testing 200 hair samples collected from 65 barber shops. They were able to accurately place the hair samples in broad regions roughly corresponding to the movement of raid systems.“It’s not good for pinpointing (精确定位),”Cerling said . “It’s good for eliminating many possibilities.”Todd Park, a local detective, said the method has helped him learn more about an unidentified woman whose skeleton was found near Great Salt Lake. The woman was 5 feet tall. Police recovered 26 bones, a T-shirt and several strands of hair. When Park heard about the research, he gave the hair samples to the researchers. Chemical testing showed that over the two years before her death, she moved about every two months. She stayed in the Northwest, although the test could not be more specific than somewhere between eastern Oregon and western Wyoming.“It’s still a substantial area,” Park said “But it narrows it way down for me.”62. What is the scientists’ new discovery?A) One’s hair growth has to do with the amount of water they drink.B) A person’s hair may reveal where they have lived.C) Hair analysis accurately identifies criminal suspects.D) The chemical composition of hair varies from person to person.63. What does the author mean by “You’re what you eat and drink” (Line 1, Para.3)?A) Food and drink affect one’s personality development.B) Food and drink preferences vary with individuals.C) Food and drink leave traces in one’s body tissues.D) Food and drink are indispensable to one’s existence.64.

例如:09年92题中的the Global Su pport Centre,98题的Raoul,99题的Mickey等,都是可以用来定位的首字母大写的专有名词;81题的most weight 和hip-joints,82题的the replacement of hip-joints,83题的increasing efficiency of the agricultural industry等,这些都属于实词定位。

Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Throughout this long, tense election, everyone has focused on the presidential candidates and how they’ll change America. Rightly so, but selfishly, I’m more fascinated by Michelle Obama and what she might be able to do, not just for this country, but for me as an African-American woman. As the potential First Lady, she would have the world’s attention. And that means that for the first time people will have a chance to get up close and personal with the type of African-American woman they so rarely see.Usually, the lives of black women go largely unexamined. The prevailing theory seems to be that we’re all hot-tempered single mothers who can’t keep a man. Even in the world of make-believe, black women still can’t escape the stereotype of being eye-rolling, oversexed females raised by our never-married, alcoholic (酗酒的) mothers. These images have helped define the way all women are viewed, including Michelle Obama. Before she ever gets the chance to commit to a cause, charity or foundation as First Lady, her most urgent and perhaps most complicated duty may be simple to be herself. It won’t be easy. Because few mainstream publications have done in-depth features on regular African-American women, little is known about who we are, what we think and what we face on a regular basis. For better or worse, Michelle will represent us all.Just as she will have her critics, she will also have millions of fans who usually have little interest in the First Lady. Many African-American blogs have written about wh at they’d like to see Michelle bring to the White House—mainly showing the world that a black woman can support her man and raise a strong black family. Michelle will have to work to please everyone—an impossible task. But for many African-American women like me, just a little of her poise (沉着), confidence and intelligence will go a long way in changing an image that’s been around for far too long.57. Why does Michelle Obama hold a strong fascination for the author?A) She serves as a role model for African women.B) She possesses many admirable qualities becoming a First Lady.C) She will present to the world a new image of African-American women.D) She will pay closer attention to the interests of African-American women.58. What is the common stereotype of African-American women according to the author?A) They are victims of violence. B) They are of an inferior violence.C) They use quite a lot of body language. D) They live on charity and social welfare.59. What do many African-Americans write about in their blogs?A) Whether Michelle can live up to the high expectations of her fans.B) How Michelle should behave as a public figure.C) How proud they are to have a black woman in the White House.D) What Michelle should do as wife and mother in the White House.60. What does the author say about Michelle Obama as a First Lady?A) However many fans she has, she should remain modest,B) She shouldn’t disappoint the African-American community.C) However hard she tries, she can’t expect to please everybody.D) She will give priority to African-American women’s concerns.61. What do many African-American women hope Michelle Obama will do?A) Help change the prevailing view about black women.B) Help her husband in the task of changing America.C) Outshine previous First Lady.D) Fully display her fine qualities.Passage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage. When next year’s crop of high-school graduates arrive at Oxford University in the fall of 2009, they’ll be joined by a new face; Andrew Hamilton, the 55-year-old provost (教务长) of Yale, who’ll become Oxford’s vice-chancellor—a position equivalent to university president in America.Hamilton isn’t the only educator crossing the Atlantic. Schools in France, Egypt, Singapore, etc, have also recently made top-level hires from abroad. Higher education has become a big and competitive business nowadays, and like so many businesses, it’s gone global. Yet the talent flow isn’t universal. High-level personnel tend to head in only one direction: outward from America. The chief reason is that American schools don’t tend to seriously consider looking abroad. For example, when the board of the University of Colorado searched for a new president, it wanted a leader familiar with the state government, a major source of th e university’s budget. “We didn’t do any global consideration,” says Patricia Hayes, the board’s chair. The board ultimately picked Bruce Benson, a 69-year-old Colorado businessman and political activist (活动家) who is likely to do well in the main task of modern university presidents: fund-raising. Fund-raising is a distinctively American thing, since U.S. schools rely heavily on donations. The fund-raising ability is largely a product of experience and necessity. Many European universities, meanwhile, are still mostly dependent on government funding. But government support has failed to keep pace with rising student number. The decline in government support has made funding-raising an increasing necessary ability among administrators and has hiring committees hungry for Americans. In the past few years, prominent schools around the world have joined the trend. In 2003, when Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard, another former Yale provost, as its vice-chancellor, the university publicly stressed that in her previous job s he had overseen “a major strengthening of Yale’s financial position.”Of course, fund-raising isn’t the only skill outsiders offer. The globalization of education means more universities will be seeking heads with international experience of some kind of promote international programs and attract a global student body.Foreigners can offer a fresh perspective on established practices.62. What is the current trend in higher education discussed in the passage?A) Institutions worldwide are hiring administrators from the U.S.B) A lot of political activists are being recruited as administrators.C) American universities are enrolling more international students.D) University presidents are paying more attention to funding-raising.63. What is the chief consideration of American universities when hiring top-level administrators?A) The political correctness. B) Their ability to raise funds.C) Their fame in academic circles. D) Their administrative experience.64. What do we learn about European universities from the passage?A) The tuitions they charge have been rising considerably.B) Their operation is under strict government supervision.C) They are strengthening their position by globalization.D) Most of their revenues come from the government.65. Cambridge University appointed Alison Richard as its vice-chancellor chiefly because _____.A) she was known to be good at raising moneyB) she could help strengthen its ties with YaleC) she knew how to attract students overseasD) she had boosted Yale’s academic status66. In what way do top-level administrators from abroad contribute to university development?A) They can enhance the university’s image.B) They will bring with them more international faculty.C) They will view a lot of things from a new perspective.D) They can set up new academic disciplines. MICHELLE OBAMA IS A BLACK SKINNED BEAUTY!。

Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension (Skimming and Scanning) (15 minutes)Directions: In this part, you will have 15 minutes to go over the passage quickly and answer the questions on Answer Sheet 1. For questions 1-7, choose the best answer from the four choices marked A), B), C) and D). For question 8-10, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Colleges taking another look at value of merit-based aidGood grades and high tests scores still matter-a lot-to many colleges as they award financial aid.But with low-income students projected to make up an ever-larger share of the college-bound population in coming years, some schools are re-examining whether that aid, typically known as "merit aid", is the most effective use of precious institutional dollars.George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for example, said last week that it would cut the value of its average merit scholarships by about one-third and reduce the number of recipients(接受者), pouring the savings, about $2.5 million, into need-based aid. Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., made a similar decision three years ago. Now, Hamilton College in Clinton, N.Y., says it will phase out merit scholarships altogether. No current merit-aid recipients will lose their scholarships, but need-based aid alone will be awarded beginning with students entering in fall 2008.Not all colleges offer merit aid; generally, the more selective a school, the less likely it is to do so. Harvard and Princeton, for example, offer generous need-based packages, but many families who don't meet need eligibility(资格)have been willing to pay whatever they must for a big-name school. For small regional colleges that struggle just to fill seats, merit aid can be an important revenue-builder because many recipients still pay enough tuition dollars over and above the scholarship amount to keep the institution running. But for rankings-conscious schools in between, merit aid has served primarily as a tool to recruit top students and to improve their academic profits. "They're trying to buy students," says Skidmore College economist Sandy Baum.Studies show merit aid also tends to benefit disproportionately students who could afford to enroll without it."As we look to the future, we see a more pressing need to invest in need-based aid," says Monica Inzer, dean of admission and financial aid at Hamilton, which has offered meritscholarships for 10 years. During that time, it rose in US News & World Report's ranking of the best liberal arts colleges, from 25 to 17.Merit aid, which benefited about 75 students a year, or about 4% of its student body, at a cost of about $ 1 million a year, "served us well," Inzer says, but "to be discounting the price for families that don't need financial aid doesn't feel right any more."Need-based aid remains by far the largest share of all student aid, which includes state, federal and institutional grants. But merit aid, offered primarily by schools and states, is growing faster, both overall and at the institutional level.Between 1995-96 and 2003-04, institutional merit aid alone increased 212%, compared with 47% for need-based grants. At least 15 states also offer merit aid, typically in a bid to enroll top students in the state's public institutions. But in recent years, a growing chorus(异口同声)of critics has begun pressuring schools to drop the practice. Recent decisions by Hamilton and others may be "a sign that people are starting to realize that there's this destructive competition going on," says Baum, co-author of a recent College Report that raises concerns about the role of institutional aid not based on need.David Laird, president of the Minnesota Private College Council, says many of his schools would like to reduce their merit aid but fear that in doing so, they would lose top students to their competitors."No one can take one-sided action," says Laird, who is exploring whether to seek an exemption(豁免)from federal anti-trust laws so member colleges can discuss how they could jointly reduce merit aid, "This is a merry-go-round that's going very fast, and none of the institutions believe they can sustain the risks of trying to break away by themselves."A complicating factor is that merit aid has become so popular with middle-income families, who don't qualify for need-based aid, that many have come to depend on it. And, as tuitions continue to increase, the line between merit and need blurs. That's one reason Allegheny College doesn't plan to drop merit aid entirely."We still believe in rewarding superior achievements and know that these top students truly value the scholarship," says Scott Friedhoff, Allegheny's vice president for enrollment.Emory University in Atlanta, which boasts a $4.7 billion endowment(捐赠), meanwhile, is taking another approach. This year, it announced it would eliminate loans for needy students and cap them for middle-income families. At the same time, it would expand its 28-year-old merit program."Yeah, we're playing the merit game," acknowledges Tom Lancaster, associate dean for undergraduate education. But it has its strong point, too, he says. "The fact of the matter is, it's not just about the lowest-income people. It's the average American middle-class family who's being priced out of the market."*A few words about merit-based aid:Merit-based aid is aid offered to students who achieve excellence in a given area, and is generally known as academic, athletic and artistic merit scholarships.Academic merit scholarships are based on students' grades, GPA and overall academic performance during high school. They are typically meant for students going straight to college right after high school. However, there are scholarships for current college students with exceptional grades as well. These merit scholarships usually help students pay tuition bills, and they can be renewed each year as long as the recipients continue to qualify. In some cases, students may need to be recommended by their school or a teacher as part of the qualification process.Athletic merit scholarships are meant for students that excel(突出)in sports of any kind, from football to track and field events. Recommendation for these scholarships is required, since exceptional athletic performance has to be recognized by a coach or a referee (裁判). Applicants need to send in a tape containing their best performance.Artistic merit scholarships require that applicants excel in a given artistic area. This generally includes any creative field such as art, design, fashion, music, dance or writing. Applying for artistic merit scholarships usually requires that students submit a portfolio (选辑)of some sort, whether that includes a collection of artwork, a recording of a musical performance or a video of them dancing.1.

Passage 1:Adolescence is often considered a culture apart fromthat of preadolescent children and adults. As such, adolescence is often viewed as a unitary psychological construct when, in fact, a quick review of the research literature reveals that the psychological experience of adolescents is variegated (多变的 ). Although mostadolescents successfully navigate the perils of thetransition from childhood to adulthood, a significantminority reports high levels of stress and relative vulnerability (脆弱性 ).A wealth of research tells us that social networksupport helps adults cope with stress and buffers (缓冲) negative psychological and physical consequences (结果). But despite the centrality (关键性) of social relationships to adolescents' emotional well-being, we know surprisinglylittle about the role of social networks during adolescence. In order to investigate this, we analyzed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Our results offer valuable insights into the effects of relationships on adolescents' psychological well-being. First, similar to previous reports (报告), our findings indicate that adolescents with strong relationships report lower levels of depressive symptoms. Second, and equally important, the findings suggest that the disadvantages of having few friends or being isolated are most serious for adolescents. For adults, it is the quality, rather than the quantity (数量), of social relationships that primarily matters. But for adolescents, mere numbers also seem to count. Our results offer no clue as to why larger numbers of relationships are important, but an explanation emerges from the literature on peer status popularity. Popularity can be a double-edged sword (两面刃)—it seems to offer someprotective benefits, but it is also associated with negative psychological consequences. For example, popular boys tend to be physically aggressive and are at greater risk for substance abuse (滥用). Furthermore, popular adolescents are at increased risk for poor academic performance, delinquency (违法行为) and adjustment problems (适应问题).Although our results shed light on the importance of social relationships during adolescence, there is little research focusing on how the quality of social relationships affects adolescents' psychological well-being. Do positive relationships with adults or with peers predict fewer symptoms of depression, anxiety, or substance abuse? Arethere critical transition points, such as changing schools, that disrupt the normal course of friendship development and place adolescents at increased risk for adjustment problems? In conclusion, social networks play a vital role in the emotional well-being of adolescents. Larger numbers of relationships seem to be important, possibly because of the association between popularity and psychological distress. Future research should aim to investigate the effects of the quality of social relationships on adolescents' psychological well-being, and explore how critical transitions impact friendship development.题目:The passage mainly discusses ________.A. the importance of social networks in adolescenceB. the different psychological experiences of adolescentsC. the popularity of adolescents and its impact on psychological well-beingD. the negative consequences of weak socialrelationships in adolescence答案解析:本文主要讨论的是社交网络在青少年中的重要性。

A. It inspired many leading designers to start going green.解析:由FutureFashion定位到原⽂第1段第1⾏,原⽂为the show inspired many top designers to work with sustainable fabrics for the first time。

A选项中leading与原⽂top为同义替换,同样的还有start与for the first time。

D. quality organic replacements for synthetics are not readily available.解析:由Scott Hahn和challenge定位到原⽂第2段第1⾏,原⽂为…says high-quality sustainable materials can still be tough to find。

D选项中are not readily available与can still be tough to find是同义替换。

D. are gaining more and more support. Those who do make the switch are finding they have more support。

例如,why dose Michelle Obama hold a strong fascination for the author?
Thank You!
Thank you!
但是,这十个题目中,值得圈点 的是第5题“in recent years, merit-based aid has increased much faster than need-based due to ?”
