This year GoodPop will be joining forces with Good Deeds Day (a global movement of doing good) to support the communities they serve and spread good in a big way. The “Good” in the company name isn’t just about the ingredients (材料)they use or the way the products taste; it’s an important part of their duty to use their frozen (冷冻的) treats as a vehicle to do social and environmental good.
As a college student, Goetz was looking for something cooling on a hot day and went to buy himself a sno-cone (an icy sweet treat). At the sno-con e stand, he asked, “What’s in that syrup (糖浆)?” and the staff member responded with a headshake.
“I thought there had to be something b etter that was delicious and made with healthy ingredients but I couldn’t seem to find it. Everything was full of coloring and unpronounceable ingredients. So I set out to make a frozen pop made with fresh fruit and simple ingredients,” said Goetz, GoodPop’s founder.
“This is our first year working with Good Deeds Day and we could not be more excited to raise awareness for this day. Our focus at GoodPop is making the world a brighter place with more generosity and acts of kindness,” Goetz explained. We beli eve that every single person has the power to make a positive impact in their community and our goal with Good Deeds Day is to get as many people joining in as possible to create a ripple effect (连锁反应) of goodness.
“It is GoodPop’s pledge (保证) to always do good in the communities we service and encourage others to promote acts of goodness by pledging a good deed too. We have a goal of five million pledges by 2025 and expect that our partnership with Good Deeds Day will raise awareness of this effort. Just think of all the good we could do in the world if five million people pledge to do a good deed!” Goetz stated.

Have you ever imagined that your simple T-shirt could cool you down by up to 5℃ on sticky summer days? Thanks to a recent discovery, the possibility is getting closer. While there are many choices managing to keep the body warm, this amazing invention aims to offer real relief for those eager to feel comfortable and fresh in the outdoors on extremely hot days.
Its inventors, engineers Ma Yaoguang of Zhejiang University and Tao Guangming of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China, took a completely creative approach. They designed a special textile(纺织物) that can absorb body heat and re-emit(重发出) its energy into space. This textile cools both the objects and their surroundings through a technique that is known as radiative cooling, Science Magazine reveals. This means that even when it looks like you are wearing a regular shirt, you are actually wearing a device that works like a mirror.
Up until now, the available solutions to heat through clothes were limited to suggestions on wearing light colors since these don’t a bsorb sunlight like dark colors do, and choosing breathable cloth like cotton and linen. But even when these tips can actually help you chill, they are simply not enough in the hottest seasons, and in places with extreme temperatures.
Inventors Yaoguang and Guangming are now looking out for textile manufacturers(制造商) and clothing brands that are interested in using their cloth. They estimate that the new material will increase clothing manufacturing costs by just 10 percent. “We can make it with mass produc tion, which means everybody can get a T-shirt and the cost is basically the same as their old ones,” Yaoguang said.
8. What is the purpose of the new invention?
A.To warm up people’s body.
B.To cool people off in hot weather.
C.To measure the wearers’ temperature.
D.To protect clothes from becoming wet.
9. How does the special product work?
A.By sending out absorbed heat.
B.By turning sunlight into energy.
C.By keeping heat out completely.
D.By using light colors to reflect sunlight.
10. What does the underlined word in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Relax. B.Heat. C.Cool. D.Freeze.
11. What can we learn about the new T-shirt according to the passage?
A.It needs to be tested further.
B.It had been designed by a clothing brand.
C.It has been produced by a textile manufacturer.
D.It won’t cost much more money than a regular one.
Dogs may understand more than they show. Pet dogs’ brains displayed neural (神经的) signs of surprise when their owners showed them an unexpected toy. The findings, published March 22 in Current Biology, suggest that dogs create mental concepts of objects.
“Anyone who has ever interacted very much with a dog probably is not surprised to know that dogs understand what your speech is referring to, especially when it contai ns common objects,” says Ellen Lau, a neuroscientist at the University of Maryland in College Park. But some people may assume that this “understanding” is a simple reaction to the sound of the word.
Marianna Boros, a neuroscientist at Lorand University in Budapest, recruited 27 pet dogs and their owners. The team asked the owners to bring five familiar toys and other objects to the lab. Researchers stuck electrodes (电极) to the dogs’ heads and gave them two tasks: lie on the floor and stay awake.
Every so o ften, a dog would hear a recording of its owner saying things like, “Kun-Kun, look, the ball!” The dog’s owner was on the other side of a wall with a window covered by the curtains. Just after the recording played, the curtains were opened, showing the owner holding a toy — the ball or a different toy, such as a rope.
Just after seeing an unexpected object, an electrode monitoring (监测) brain activity picked up a larger-than-normal signal. This signal indicates surprise, the team says, and suggests that the dog had already formed a mental concept and expectation of the ball after hearing that word. In fact, the signal was especially strong for a mismatch involving words that the dogs knew very well. “That suggests that it is really about understanding and kno wledge of the word,” Boros says.
12. Which is Ellen Lau’s view on dogs’ understanding of speech?
A.Dogs understand speech as a simple reaction to the sound of the word.
B.Dogs understand speech, especially when it involves common objects.
C.Dogs have limited understanding of speech, mainly reacting to tone.
D.Dogs shows completely understanding of the deeper meaning of the speech.
13. How did researchers test dogs’ reactions?
A.By monitoring their brain activity. B.By observing their behaviors.
C.By playing recordings. D.By opening the curtains.
14. What does the signal mentioned in paragraph 5 indicate?
A.Dogs hear commands. B.Dogs rise to their feet.
C.Dogs show relief. D.Dogs form expectations.
15. Which might be the best title for the text?
A.Examining Dogs’ Hearing of Words B.Revealing Dogs’ Mental Concepts
C.Exploring Dogs’ Reactions to the Orders D.Studying Dogs’ Neural System
Should We Create More National Parks to Save Endangered Animals?
Don’t you find it worrying that more and more species of animals are in real danger of becoming extinct? 16 And I think the best way to do this is for governments to create more national parks.
17 If this environment is destroyed — for example, when farmers clear a forest for new fields, or trees are cut down to make profits — many animals are unable to survive, and more species are likely to become extinct.
In addition, national parks protect animals from the danger of being hunted. A major reason why many species are endangered is that these animals are killed by hunters. They hunt animals to make money. 18
On the other hand, some people fight against the creation of national parks because they consider it is wrong to interfere with nature. They believe that wild animals are happier living in their natural environment. 19 They also point out that a few species are more likely to produce young animals in the wild than in national parks.
All in all, these disadvantages are far less important than the benefits of national parks. 20 As a matter of fact, they protect animals from their greatest enemies, that is, human beings.

Sadie looked out of the window and sighed (叹气) as she thought about another long, boring day of summer. She wondered what all of her friends from school were doing on their summer vacations. It had to be a lot better than looking out of a window. Sadie thought about the fun she had last summer when she and her best friend Allison went to the beach. They built sandcastles, played beach volleyball, an d even tried surfing. But they wouldn’t be going to the beach together this summer because Allison had moved to a different city far away from Sadie’s.
Suddenly, Sadie had an idea. She could call her friend Wendy, who always had funny ideas. Maybe they could ride their bikes together around the park. Sadie raced to the living room, picked up the phone, and called Wendy. She sighed more deeply as the phone rang and rang. Then Sadie seated herself on the sofa, picked up the television remote, and put it down again. She didn’t really want to
watch television, so she went to her room and found the list of phone numbers of her good friends from school. In the living room, she called almost each of them, but no one was at home.
After hanging up the phone, Sadie wandered into the kitchen and sat down at the table, watching her mom do the cleaning. “Mom, I don’t have anyone to hang out with because my friends from school aren’t home and Allison moved away,” said Sadie. “Honey, there are many things you can do by yourself, like playing your guitar or having a walk in the garden. You could even finish that story about our camping trip,” said Mom.
“I don’t want to do those things by myself. I want to play with a friend.” “Sometimes, it is nice to do things by yourself,” said Mom. “I like seeing my friends, but I also like doing things alone like taking a walk by myself or finding a quiet spot to read. Why not have a try?”
Sadie thought about her mom’s words and returned to her room.
