It was at least two months before Christmas when nine-year old Amy Rose told her father and me that she wanted a new bicycle. As Christmas drew nearer, her desire ( 渴望)for a bicycle didn't seem that strong, so we bought the most popular present for little girls, Baby Sitter's Club dolls and a doll house.
Then, to our surprise, on December 23, Amy said that she “really wanted a bike more than anything else”. It was just too late. With preparing Christmas dinner and buying last-minute gifts, how could we have time to buy the “right bike” for our little girl?
So, here we were around 9:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve, with Amy ready for sleep in her bed. Now we could only think of the bicycle and the disappointment (失望) of our child.
“Can I make a little bicycle out of clay and then write a note for her to exchange the clay model for a real bike?” her dad asked.
“Well, for now, I think this is the best idea. And she is ‘such a big girl’, so I think she will like it.”
So Amy's dad spent the next four hours working with clay to make a tiny bike. On Christmas morning, we were excited to wait for Amy to open the little heart-shaped package with the beautiful red and white clay bike and the note. Finally, she opened it and read the note aloud.
“Does this mean that I can excha nge this bike that Daddy made me for a real one?"

Reading is getting more popular among young Chinese. A new survey says that 85% of the young people in China read at least 1 book last year. And the number of teenage readers has been rising in recent years and the teenagers read more books. Last year, they read an average (平均) of 11.5 books.
The survey shows that teenagers spend much more time reading school textbooks than some other reading materials, such as novels, e-books, magazines and so on. But younger children (aged 2-8) are mainly reading for fun. Compared with the past, the time teenagers spend on pleasure reading has dropped.

T his may be bad for heir heath Also, they are examples for their children. More than 70% of Chinese parents spend at least 20 minutes a day reading to their children (aged 0-8), and visit bookstores with them about three times a year. The survey shows that compared to those who don't like reading, kids and teens who do a lot of reading have more books at home, and have more chances to get books. Their parents read more often, and would like to spare more time to read with them.
When was the last time you read a book? Actually, everything you read fills your head with new bits of information, and you never know when it might be useful. The more knowledge you have, the better prepared you are to deal with any challenge you'll face. “What's the name of our neighbor next door? I can't remember it right now.” Have you ever heard your grandparents ask questions like this sometimes? Usually, we think that older people's memory becomes bad because their brains get weak. But now a team of scientists in Germany has a new idea.
“The huma n brain works slower at old age,” says Michael Ramscar, the lead scientist, “but only because it has stored more information over time.” His team got these findings after a number of computer experiments on learning and memory.
Scientists have the computers read a certain number of words and learn new things each day. When the computer “reads”a small amount of information, its performance (表现) on memory tests is like a young adult's. But if the computer learns a large amount of information, its performance is similar to that of an older adult.
Often it is slower, but not because its processing (处理) ability has declined. Instead, more experience" has made the computer 's database (数据库) grow, giving it more information to process, and it takes more time. This is similar to how old people process information.
Imagine that one person knows just two people's birthdays and can get them right every time. Another person knows the birthdays of 2,000 people, but can only match the right person to the right birthday nine times out of ten. Can you say the first person has better memory than the second person?
“The larger library you have in your head, the longer it usually takes to find a particular word," Benedict Carey, a science reporter for New York Times, wrote in an article about the study.
41. The writer uses a question at the beginning of the passage to .
A. invite the readers to answer the question
B. catch the readers’ attention to the topic
C. show how weak older people's brains are
D. show worries about memory problems
42. According to the study, why do elderly people have poor memories? Because .
A. their brains get weak
B. their brains only store information
C. their brains store too much information
D. their brains don't store information over time
43. The underlined word “declined” in Paragraph 4 means .
A. become faster
B. become weaker
C. become stronger
D. become easier
44. When computers learn too many “experiences”, .
A. their databases get too full
B. they lose their processing ability
C. they learn to process the data faster
D. they need more time to process the data
45. What may be the best title for the passage?
A. Scientists' new study on brains.
B. Human brain's processing ability.
C. Do old people have a bad memory?
D. Which is better, the old or the young?

Do you know Chen Jingrun? He was born in Fujian, China. He was a great Chinese mathematician. His greatest achievement was solving most of the famous maths problem: Goldbach’s conjecture ( 哥德巴赫猜想). 46 Here comes the story.
Around 70 years ago, Chen Jingrun met his knowledgeable teacher Shen Yuan at his high school. 47 It says that every even number ( 偶数) greater than two can be the total of two prime numbers (质数). 48 Finally, in 1966, Chen proved (证明) most of it.
49 When he was working on Goldbach's conjecture, he used huge amounts of scratch paper. Chen was once thinking about the problem too deeply and he walked into a tree on the sidewalk and said sorry to it.
During the 1970s and 1980s in China, Chen became an idol. He showed what scientists should be like in people's mind—thin, quiet, wearing a pair of glasses and living in his own world. Because of him, science became an interesting area for the young students in China. 50
