Her return brought the spring.Demeter is also known for founding the Eleusinian Mysteries. These were huge festivals held every five years. They were important events for many centuries. Yet, little is known of them as those attending were sworn to secrecy. The central tenant seems to have been that just as grain returns every spring after its harvest and wintry death, so too the human soul could be reborn after the death of the body. PersephonePersephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. After her abduction by Hades she became his wife and Queen of the underworld.DionysusDionysus is the god of the vine. He invented wine and spread the art of tending grapes. He has a dual nature. On the one hand bringing joy and divine ecstasy. On the other brutal, unthinking, rage. Thus, reflecting both sides of wines nature. If he chooses, Dionysus can drive a man mad. No normal fetters can hold him or his followers. Dionysus is the son of Zeus and Semele. He is the only god to have a mortal parent. Zeus came to Semele in the night, invisible, felt only as a divine presence. Semele was pleased to be a lover of a god, even though she did not know which one. Word soon got around and Hera quickly assumed who was responsible. Hera went to Semele in disguise and convinced her she should see her lover as he really was. When Zeus next came to her she made him promise to grant her one wish. She went so far as to make him swear on the River Styx that he would grant her request. Zeus was madly in love and agreed. She then asked him to show her his true form. Zeus, was unhappy, and knew what would happen, but having sworn he had no choice. He appeared in his true form and Semele was instantly burnt to a crisp by the sight of his glory. Zeus did manage to rescue Dionysus and stitched him into his thigh to hold him until he was ready to be born. His birth from Zeus alone conferred immortality upon him. Dionysus problems with Hera were not yet over. She was still jealous and arrangedfor the Titans to kill him. The Titans ripped him into to pieces. However, Rheabrought him back to life. After this Zeus arranged for his protection and turned him over the mountain nymphs to be raised.Dionysus wandered the world actively encouraging his cult. He was accompanied by the Maenads, wild women, flush with wine, shoulders draped with a fawn skin, carrying rods tipped with pine cones. While other gods had temples the followers of Dionysus worshipped him in the woods. Here they might go into mad states where they would rip apart and eat raw any animal they came upon.Dionysus is also one of the very few that was able to bring a dead person out of the underworld. Even though he had never seen Semele he was concerned for her. Eventually he journeyed into the underworld to find her. He faced down Thanatos and brought her back to Mount Olympus.Dionysus became one of the most important gods in everyday life. He became associated with several key concepts. One was rebirth after death. AbstractA new riser concept is proposed by Subsea 7 for field development in deep and ultradeep waters: the Tethered Catenary Riser (TCR). The concept consists of a number of steel catenary risers supported by a subsurface buoy which is tethered down to sea-bed by means of a single pipe tendon and anchored by means of a suction pile; flexible jumpers are used to make the connection between the Floating production Unit (FPU) and the buoy. Umbilicals run without interruption from the FPU to their subsea end while being supported by the buoy.The system has all the advantages of de-coupled riser arrangements: the flexible jumpers effectively absorb platform motions, allowing the rigid risers and tendon to have very small dynamic excitation. The system can be installed before FPU arrival on site, which typically improves the time before first oil. Analyses have shown that, with adequate geometry of the buoy, the system is sufficient stable and will accept the tilting and twisting induces by the different configurations of SCRs and flexible jumpers during installation and under accidental scenarios during the in-place life.The riser system is best designed for a number of risers between 4 and 8, in addition to a number of umbilicals, thus convenient for one or two drilling centers.Results of the basic engineering work on the TCR clearly indicate that it is possible to have a robust design using already qualified materials and technology. The components used in the TCR are all field proven as they are commonly used in existing riser systems.As a result of installation studies, a method very similar to the one commonly used by Subea7 for Single Hybrid Risers (SHRs) has been selected for the buoy and tether system. Installation of rigid risers, jumpers and umbilicals is as done by Subsea 7 for the BSRs. This method is well adapted for installation by the new Subsea 7 new flagship vessel “Seven Borealis” which is able to perform heavy lift and pipe laying.The Tether Catenary Riser is a credible option for use in deep water developments in the Asian region. All the components are fully qualified and the design methods and installation procedures are familiar to Subsea 7. The concept is cost effective and ready for project application.IntroductionA lot of well proven riser concepts have been used in deepwater for different environments, in particular, steel or flexible risers in catenary or lazy-wave shape, and single or bundle Hybrid Riser Towers (HRTs). Nevertheless, for some application new concepts are deemed more attractive and preferred, as the Buoy Supporting Riser (BSR) for ultra-deep water offshore Brazil. But other ideas of riser concept emerge from the review and comparison of pros and cons of existing riser systems, trying to take advantage of the best in each one. The TCR is an adaptation of the BSR, but with a simpler tether arrangement and easier installation method. It can also be seen as a SHR with a number of SCRs attached to the buoyancy tank. The concept is described below as well as design methodology, design and performance examples, application in Asia and installation outline procedures.Description of the Tethered Catenary Riser systemA general view of the TCR is shown on figure 1.Buoy (refer to Figure 2) Flexible jumpersand umbilicalsSCRs and umbilicalsTendonFlexible jointFoundation- To allow easy placement of the tendon and buoy with available installation vessel(s).The water depth of the buoy is dictated by two constraints: to minimize the loading due to current (which generally reduces with depth) and the jumper length. The optimized depth thus varies with the region where the field is located. It is advisable to keep this depth within reach of divers, even if the system is designed so that installation, maintenance and potential repair are planned without their intervention.There are several potential arrangements for the buoy; the base case is shown on figure 2. Figure 2 General Arrangement of the Buoy (base case)In many aspects the buoy is similar to the one of a BSR. It includes 2 lateral pontoons linked by a transversal pontoon which supports the SCRs. They are compartmented with sufficient fineness so that the impact of accidental flooding is acceptable and the buoy center of gravity can be adjusted by ballasting to reduce the tilt in operation to acceptable limits. Compartments are pressurized during installation and remain under small differential pressure during the in-place life; the hull and bulkheads are thus designed for a minimal design pressure determined from planned and unplanned steps during installation. The ballasting and pressurization systems are designed for easy intervention by ROV and with double access barrier, to mitigate the consequence of leak of a valve.The buoy includes tubular frames to support jumpers and umbilicals, and to make the structural link with the flexible joint at top of the tendon.Jumpers and umbilicals are guided in gutters on an arch compatible with their acceptable minimum bend radius. They are attached to the buoy by means of friction clamps that come into receptacles located at top of the arch. The connection system of a flexible jumper with the flexible joint at top of a SCR is called Angle Connection Module (ACM); it includes a conical receptacle welded to the flexible joint head and a connector with soft landing system as shown on figure 3. The system has been designed and qualified by Subsea 7 for a BSR project, for a maximum misalignment angle of 15deg during placement of the jumper. There is a span between the gutter and the ACM of sufficient length to facilitate placement of the jumper, manage the jumper length inaccuracy and minimize loading on the connector.The buoy includes a monitoring system linked to the FPU by a dedicated umbilical. The only specific feature is the small dynamic excitation that allows adopting a configuration with small nominal top angle. The flexible joint is also of traditional design, with rotation capacity of the order of 20deg. Twist of the buoy is not an issue because the SCR itself is much softer in torsion over its length than the laminated elastomeric component and thus the latter sustains small rotation about the flexible joint axis.There is an alternative design to the well proven flexible joint: the SCR is supported by an articulation like a universal joint and the flexible jumper is rigidly connected to the SCR top, thus absorbing the rotation between SCR and buoy. A flexible designed for dynamic application, with proper bend stiffener is indeed capable of withstanding large rotations, mainly when the axial tension is small, as it is the case in this part of the jumper.For production lines, the component below the ACM receptacle may be fitted with a Y for coiled tubing lateral access to the riser bore, if required. Flexible jumpers and umbilicalsThe flexible jumpers and umbilical as well as their clamping and connection systems are of the same design as for the BSR. They may be supported on the FPU side when the latter is spread moored, or from a turret when the FPU is weather vanning and possibly disconnectable. Umbilicals run without interruption from the FPU to their subsea end; they are supported on the FPU side as the flexibles are, and on the subsea side by a clamp with bend stiffener that is inserted in a receptacle. Note that replacement in operation of a SCR and/or a flexible jumper is fully feasible with the same type of vessel as used for their installation. Alternative with the tendon used as a riserIn this alternative, the LTA and UTA are very similar to the top and bottom arrangements of a SHR, with fluid link at the bottom by means of a rigid spool and at the top by a gooseneck and flexible jumper. The tendon may be a single pipe for production, with thermal insulation, or for water injection if the diameter change between the nominal line bore and the inner diameter of the tendon, is a problem for pigging. It may also be a pipe-in-pipe with production in the inner pipe, gas-lift in the annulus and thermal insulation over the outer pipe; in this case gas injection in the production riser bore is close to the tendon lower end. Component design and qualificationAll the components used in the TCR are of traditional design and field proven as they are commonly used in existing riser systems. Specific qualification is not needed as far as characteristics do not exceed those commonly supplied, which is not expected considering the presently envisaged sizing.Main principles used to optimize the buoy geometryThe buoy is connected to the UTA by only one point. Therefore the buoy is not restrained for any of the 3 rotation degrees of freedom. Stability of the system within acceptable limits is guaranteed by proper buoy geometry and thus adequate location relative the one to the others of the point of application of loads, as explained below.The buoy is subject to various horizontal and vertical loads applied by the SCRs and the flexible jumpers during the different steps of installation of the SCRs first, then of the flexible jumpers, and during the in-place life; furthermore, the case of flooding of any one or two compartment of the buoy has to be considered.The stability in twist (about a vertical axis) under unbalanced horizontal loading (e.g. when installing the first riser) is ensured by having a sufficient horizontal distance in the plane of the SCRs, between the UTA flexible joint and the SCR hang-off points. Equilibrium is reached when the SCR horizontal force and its reaction through the flexible joint are in the same vertical plane. The system has been designed to manage local environmental conditions and has shown that it is a relevant risersolution for numerous projects in Asia.Installation and maintenance of a Tethered Catenary RiserThe TCR is designed to be installed by the Seven Borealis, using methods that are well known to Subsea 7.FoundationProcedures are as for any other project of un-coupled system.TendonFabrication is using the Jlay tower with friction clamps. Even if the tendon is not subject to significant fatigue loading, it is a critical component, and thus welding and inspection are carried out to provide the best achievable weld quality. Upon completion of the pipe lay, the UTA with rotolatch receptacle is welded. Then the string is transferred to an outrigger on the side of the vessel (refer to Figure 7).BuoyIn the base case scenario, the buoy is transported on a cargo barge; a specific support structure is needed because the level of the buoy is significantly above the barge deck. An alternative is tow to site as done for the BSR buoy. The Buoy is lifted from the cargo barge placed alongside the installation vessel, or off the sea water. The Buoy is maintained laterally by tugger lines from winches on the crane, so that it can rotate to reach a position above the outrigger. The buoy is lowered and the top part of the flexible joint engaged in the rotolatch receptacle.Buoy and tendonThe crane lifts the whole assembly and lowers it in water to a point when the buoy is almost floating (refer to Figure 8). Then follow simultaneous operations of ballasting of some compartments, pressurization of others and lowering of the assembly.The rest of installation is as planned for any SHR, in particular: connection of cables to sheaves on the pile, lowering of theassembly which is kept buoyant at any step, down to where the rotolatch connection with the receptacle on the pile is done.SCRsThe SCR lay operation can be carried out by the same vessel in J or S mode, or by a reel-lay vessel. Transfer of a SCR to the buoy is as for a BSR. The order of installation of SCRs may be limited by the requirement to keep the twist of the buoy within limits. In order not to overload the foundation and to limit the buoy tilt, partial de-ballasting operation of buoy compartments is carried out at the start and following placement of SCRs.Flexible jumpers and umbilicalsInstallation is with a specific type of vessel and identical to operations carried out for a BSR.Inspection and maintenanceAll parts of the system are accessible by ROV for inspection or intervention, e.g. to change the buoy ballast configuration following addition or replacement of a jumper or rigid riser. It is well adapted to the case where the FPSO is disconnectable, as the load applied on the buoy supporting risers and moorings after disconnection is small.The maximum number of risers is governed by both the capacity of the installation vessel (keeping the installation method described above), and tension capacity of the flexible joint at the tendon top (there is no technical limit here, but qualification is needed for larger capacity). There is no identified limit for large water depth. The shallow depth limit depends on the environment (e.g. rotation capacity of the flexible joints). As explained above, the system is efficient even in areas with severe sea states and large FPU motion.For the case where gas lift is needed at the riser base, rather than at the well, one solution is a separate gas lift riser and injection (cold) at a production SCR anchor point; hot injection is feasible using a wet insulated pipe-in-pipe (PIP) riser with gas lift in the annulus and injection above seabed (to avoid PIP in the TDP area), or beyond the TDP. As mentioned above, use of a pipe-in-pipe riser/tendon is also a solution.There is a need for a relatively flat area for the SCR touch-down; but in the case of disturbed seabed or congested area, the use of several TCRs, one for every drilling centre, provides flexibility for the field layout as well as the project schedule, e.g. for the case of phased development.Installation may be carried out by a single vessel, thus the TCR is convenient for fields far from fabrication yards or sea areas protected from waves as needed for other riser concepts.Application in AsiaThere is a large variation of conditions in offshore oil fields located in Asia, in term of water depth and environment. There are places with benign waves and others with tropical cyclones; others with large surface current and other with significant velocity over the whole water column. The design of the TCR can accommodate all of these variations as far as a FPU can be moored (permanently or with disconnection). The main parameters that allow adaptation to various conditions are the depth of the buoy (a large depth allows protection from effects of waves and surface current) and the upthrust of the buoy (a large net buoyancy allows increasing the resistance to horizontal loads induced by deep currents and large FPU offset).ConclusionsThe new TCR riser concept proposed by Subsea 7 for field development in deep water consists of a number of steel catenary risers supported by a subsurface buoy which is tethered down to sea-bed by means of a single pipe tendon and anchored by means of a suction pile; flexible jumpers make the connection between the FPU. The system has all the advantages of de-coupled riser arrangements: flexible jumpers effectively absorb platform motions, thereby the rigid risers and tendon have very small dynamic excitation and thus fatigue loading. In-place analyses have shown that, with adequate geometry of the buoy, the system is sufficient stable and will accept the tilting and twisting induced by the different arrangements of SCRs and flexible jumpers during installation and under accidental scenarios during the in-place life. The riser system is best designed for a number of risers between 4 and 8 in addition to a number of umbilicals, thus convenient for one or two drilling centers. Some of the other advantages of the TCR are: flexibility for the field layout and project schedule, application in areas remote from infrastructures and protected sites.Results of the basic engineering work on the TCR clearly indicate that it is possible to have a robust design using presently qualified material and technology. The components used in the TCR are all field proven as they are commonly used in existing riser systems.Installation methods very similar to the ones commonly used by Subea 7 for SHRs and BSRs have been selected. These methods are well adapted for installation by the new Subsea 7 flagship vessel Seven Borealis.The Tether Catenary Riser is a credible option for use in deep water developments in Asia. All the components are fully qualified and the design methods and installation procedures are familiar to Subsea 7.
