三、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分
A
When we first moved into our present home, the houses only had a chain-link fence(铁丝网围栏)between them. People behind us were older;their children were in their late teens, and we didn’t see them or hear from them much.
Time passed and a younger family moved in. While at first we thought this would be fun for the kids, it quickly became a pain. If one of our children had a birthday party the neighbors would line up their children along the back fence to watch. We would have invited their children if they had been of the same age. While our older children had parties the neighbor’s little kids would shout through the fence the entire time; we knew it was time to get a new fence.
When we built our fence next to the old one, they not only paid nothing for it, but watched us have it built. After we built our fence the mother of the house would call over and ask who was jumping on our trampoline (蹦床). She could only see the tops of their heads and couldn’t figure out who it was. Good people, just too much interest in us. Years later they rebuilt their houses and built a pretty fence between the houses next to the old one. They were not surprised that we didn’t want to pay for it. I have to admit their fence is much prettier than our wooden one.
Our yard is next to four other homes; each of the families has had his own home with a strong fence. We have left ours in place. While we love all our neighbors we are glad we have fences between each of us. Only in this way can we protect our little privacy (隐私), as fences certainly do make good neighbors.
36. When the author’s older children had a party, .
A. his neighbor’s children also had a party as they did
B. they would invite his neighbor’s children to attend it
C. his neighbor’s children would shout behind the fence

D. The author’s family didn’t like their new neighbor.
38. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. The author’s neighbors all have built strong fences.
B. Old people living behind liked children very much.

39. We can guess from the passage that .

During an earthquake, you should need to know a thing or two on what to do. If the earthquake strikes while you’re inside a house, you should lie on the floor and take cover under a strong table or other furniture. If there is no furniture you can cover your head with your arms and keep still in the corner of the room. You should remain away from windows, glass walls, or anything that can fall.
If you are in bed, stay still. Hold firmly onto your bed and make use of a pillow (枕头) to safeguard your head. You may use a doorway or shelter but only when it is close to you. It should also be considered whether it is strong enough to deal with the load. Do not use lifts, even when they work. Electricity may go out at any time. Many injuries happen when people try to rush out. This means you ought to stay still in your house or perhaps wherever you are.
When you are outdoors, you should be far away from buildings, power wires or lights. You should be in the open until the quake stops. Remember that many earthquake deaths outside the house come from debris (碎片), falling walls, flying glass and other falling objects. If an earthquake strikes and you are driving, you pull up to the side of the highway and stop as quickly as possible. You ought not to stop under trees, buildings or power wires. Don’t stop in the middle of the street since it could trouble others.
When trapped, you shouldn’t move. Your mouth should be covered with a piece of clothing or handkerchief. Do not shout whenever possible. Shouting should be employed at last to get help from rescuers. This is because it is possible for you to breathe some dirty dust.

D. The building probably will fall down.
43. We can learn from this passage that .
A. some people may be attacked by debris or falling objects

After incredible 115 years together two giant turtles at an Austrian zoo have gone their separate ways —refusing to share a cage any longer.
The falling-out, which has baffled (使迷惑) the officials of the zoo, marks the end of the world’s oldest animal “marriage”.
“We get the feeling that they can’t stand the sight of each other anymore,” said Helga Happ, zoo boss.
Bibi and Poldi have got along quite well at the Austrian zoo in Klagenfurt for 36 years, having moved together from the Basel zoo in Switzerland.
Both are 115 years old. The pair grew up together and finally became an attraction of the zoo.
Back on the singles market: zoo officials are not clear about why the turtles have fallen out but they say that Bibi, the female, starts attacking her partner, biting off part of his shell.
“But for no reason that anyone can discover they seem to have fallen out, they just can’t stand each other,” added Happ.
It seems that it was Bibi, the female, who started the break-up.
According to the newspaper The Austrian Times, staff at the zoo realized all was not well when Bibi attacked Poldi — biting off a chunk (厚片) of his shell. She launched further attacks on her partner until her partner was moved to a different location.
The zoo even called in animal experts to try and reunite the couple with counseling but, so far, to no avail. In order to get them in a more loving mood, the experts tried to put some fun back into the relationship by getting them to play games together, but it has not worked.
Happ told the newspaper, “It is very rare for animals who are a pair to fall apart after such a long per iod. We hope we can bring a reconciliation (和解) around,” she added.
Keeping the animals apart is important as weighing in at 100 kilos each — if they wanted they could kill the other.
Giant turtles have no teeth but instead have a horn-rimmed mouth and a powerful jaw which can cause serious damage.
44. Why did the two giant turtles get separated?
A. They attacked each other.
B. They were too large for the cage.
C. They couldn’t stand each other.
D. The exact reason is unknown.
45. What do we know about the two giant turtles?
A. They used to fight a lot.
B. They came from different zoos.
C. They were of different ages.
D. They used to live in peace.
46. What can we infer from Happ’s words?
A. It’s common for animals to break up.
B. The two giant turtles will reunite.
C. Animals that live long together seldom fall apart.
D. The zoo officials will put the two giant turtles into a cage.

Robles was honored on the 2011 ESPY Awards broadcast with not one but two awards: The Jimmy V Award for Perseverance — named for the late college basketbal l coach Jim Valvano, and given to a “member of the sporting world who has overcome great difficulties through physical perseverance and determination,” according to ESPN — and Best Male Athlete with a Disability.

Do it hard, just make it possible, and I’ll not complain about the pain I have experienced. My spirit is unconquerable (不可征服的). Fearless, I will face each opponent, for
I know I am capable. Although there is blood, sweat and tears, I am unstoppable.”

四、任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Parents often want to know what to do when they see good behavior at home. We always see bad behavior. Good behavior is different and we need to do something about it. So, the question is, “What are the three ways we can do to reward (奖励) good behavior whe n we see it?” Well, the first one is to simply acknowledge (承认) it. Parents are often so busy that when they see child behave well, they feel relaxed and go onto the next item like going in the kitchen or getting the dishes done. That’s not the best thing to do. The best thing to do is that when you see your child behaving in a way you want him/her to behave, you need to stop and acknowledge it by saying, “I love it when you play well with your sister.” We need to stop, give our children our full attention, and thank them for the behavior.
The second way to reward good behavior is to reward them with you. All too often parents want to reward children with money or things. Actually, parents are encouraged to make the rewards frequent but make them not cost anything. For example, give your child thirty, say, sixty minutes with you simply for doing something you want them to do. You can say to him/her, “This afternoon at three o’clock, you and I are going to go for a walk or I’m going to play with whatever toy you pick from your room.” You see, it’s important that we encourage children through time with us. However, when we reward them with money or gifts, it makes them unable to understand the whole social concept (观念) of founding a close family.
The final way of rewarding good behavior is cooperation (合作). Now, most of the behavior that parents want from children is just the cooperation. When you see your children cooperating, acknowledge it by saying, “Thank you for cooperating with me; I love it when you cooperate with me.” “You know what that does; it makes me want to cooperate with you.” Because your child doesn’t automatically (自动地) know cooperation, you are required to sit down and explain it to your child by saying,“ When you cooperate with mom, I want t o do nothing but cooperate with you.”
The three ways to reward good behavior at home
(51)_______ your child’s good behavior. ●It is wrong to pay no (52) _______ to the child who is performing well.
●You should say something good to (53)_______ your child in his/her good behavior.
Reward your child with you. ●Rewarding children with money or gifts makes them lose the (54)_______ to understand the social concept of founding a close family.
●You can reward your child with something that costs (55)________ .
●You can (56)________ some time doing something together with your child.
(57)_______ with your child. ●You should be (58)________ to your child for his/her cooperating with you.
●Tell your child that you are (59)_______ to cooperate with him/her just because he/she cooperates with others.
●You need to give your child an (60)_______ about cooperation.
