A
Jim Denevan is an amazing artist whose work is admired by all, but owned by none—that’s because all of Jim’s art is created on an unusual canvas(画布)—the soft sand. He sometimes spends days working on a piece, only to see it washed away by the sea or a storm and that is just the way he likes it.
Denevan discovered his artistic talents about ten years ago, when he was wandering aimlessly on the beach with a stick. He ended up drawing a 12-foot-long fish. Since then, Jim has traveled over 1, 800 miles while creating over 600 pieces of sand art.
Over the years, his drawings have become bigger, but the tools he uses haven’t changed—all he needs is a stick, a garden rake (耙子)and most importantly, his lively imagination!
Just like any good artist, Jim is quite particular about the “quality” of his canvas, sometimes walking for miles, looking for perfect sand. His latest piece of work, which is also the world’s largest freelance (自由职业的)drawing, was created in the desert sand of Nevada. It took Jim three trips, eight days and over 100 miles of walking to create this 3-mile work of art. It took the storm just one night to destroy it! However, Jim says he actually enjoys watching the waves or rain wash his paintings away.
Jim’s art has become very popular over the years and was even the topic of a documentary
named “Sandman” in 2015. Jim Denevan is not just about art in the sand—he is also an excellent chef and founder of an organization called “Outstanding in the Field”, whose motto is to celebrate food at its source. Accordingly, group dining events are held outdoors on farms, with the diners being treated to a delicious meal. The events, which are held in different farms throughout America, are always sold out the minute the schedule is announced.

(2023·龙岩高一检测) While most musicians work with other artists when creating their music, Holly Herndon, an American musician and sound artist who is now based in Berlin, takes a different way, working with the machine learning software called Spawn. The software uses artificial neural networks modeled after the structure of the human brain. These networks learn patterns from datasets during the training process. Based on the data, the networks create new material that includes Herndon’s own voice.
When producing her album, PROTO, Holly trained datasets to write new music. The process requires the input data of music written by people or by artificial intelligence (AI). The neural networks then produce variations of that music. “Computers surprise you in a way that an instrument doesn’t, ” Holly said. So what does music sound like when composed by what is essentially a robot? It sounds like music from the future!
But Holly Herndon isn’t the only one to explore AI in composition. Machines have played an increasingly important role in music over the last century. The godfather of computer science, Alan Turing, developed the first computer-generated music in 1951. Then in 1980, David Cope from the University of California, Santa Cruz developed EMI—Experiments in Musical Intelligence, a system that analyzes existing music and produces new pieces based on it.
AI might not take over the job of the “pop star” anytime soon, or will it? Miquela Sousa is a computer-generated artist with over one million followers on Instagram. “I’m a model and singer. And I’m a robot, ” Miquela said. This then raises the question: Can we reproduce creativity using a computer?
Though those questions are not easy to answer, I believe the next frontier of music lies somewhere in between. I can see the path forward with a new dawn of creativity that combines human inventiveness with AI. And the next chapter of music will certainly become wonderful as music and AI become even more closely connected.

(2023·惠州高一检测) Tanzanian government has set up a high-speed Internet service on Mount Kilimanjaro, which was named a World Heritage site in 1987. The government says the service will promote safety for climbers and allow people to post selfies as they climb Africa’s tallest mountain at 5, 895 meters.
The mountain, created by volcanoes and rising out of a large, open flat area, is part of Kilimanjaro National Park in the northeast of Tanzania. Around 50, 000 people visit the park each year. But climbing such a tall mountain isn’t easy. Roughly one-third of the people who try to climb it are forced to give up. The new Internet service should make it easier for climbers to reach the top. They can use the Internet to check maps and find their way, or call for help if they need it.
Currently, the new service reaches more than halfway up the mountain. The government says that by the end of the year, climbers will get Internet even at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The government says safety is the main reason for setting up the Internet service on the mountain. As Tanzania depends heavily on tourists, having people post pictures and videos on social media as they climb Mount Kilimanjaro could certainly make the spot even more popular with tourists.
Some people in Tanzania are upset that the government is focusing on Internet for tourists
instead of the livelihood of people living in the country. One study showed that only about 83% of the people living in Tanzania can get cell phone service where they live. It also bothered people who were worried that the project might affect the environment on the mountain. Scientists have already warned that the glaciers on top of Mount Kilimanjaro may melt in the next 10 years. So far, the cable car project doesn’t seem to be making much progress.
