We often hear stories of animals rescuing people. But now someone has managed to return the favor.
The event took place on a snowy January morning. Thomas Smith was walking his dog, Jack, in the park. "As I was walking, I just saw Jack running into the ice towards the ducks in the middle, and then he fell into the water and couldn't climb out," said Smith. He realized he had no choice but to try and save his dog. "Someone else told me the lake was only one meter deep, but it was at least twice that.
I had to break my way through the 6-cm ice. Finally, I got Jack by the neck and pulled him out. I didn't think I had ever felt so cold by the time we got back to dry land. And when we got there, everyone was asking if Jack was okay—no one was particularly worried about me!"
A neighbor, Julie Brown, saw it all happen. "The dog went onto an icy lake. All of a sudden, it started to go under. There were crowds of people around, and they were all shouting and screaming. Before I knew it, the owner (Smith) was in the water forcing his way through the ice, I couldn't imagine how cold it was. Everyone was very nervous, but he was as cool as a cucumber-he just crawled back out, put the dog on its lead, and went home.
Many regard him as a hero, but Mr. Smith is quite laid—back about it, "Most dog owners are the same as me. They would do what I did without a second thought. But in the future, I'm going to make sure he's on a lead near any icy pond.

Marco Polo was born in Italy in 1254. When he was 17, he travelled across Europe and Asia with his father, who wanted to do trade with the Chinese. Finally they arrived in Beijing. They were guests at the Emperor^ Palace. Although Marco Polo was young, he was very clever and could speak some foreign languages. The Emperor was impressed by him. He asked Marco Polo to serve in his court (宫廷) and sent him to do many important tasks across the country.
Marco Polo was amazed by the beautiful China. He was impressed by Beijing and the Emperor's Palace, especially the Summer Palace which he described as "The greatest palace that ever was..." The walls were covered with gold and silver and the hall was so large that it could easily seat 6,000 people for dinner.
There were inventions and developments in China which were not used in Europe at that time. He was puzzled (困惑的) by the black stones people used to bum to produce heat. The black stones were coal, but Marco Polo had never seen coal before!
In 1295, after 17 years of service to the Emperor, Marco Polo returned to Italy. He was then a very wealthy man. A writer wrote down the stories that Marco Polo told him in a book called The Travels of Marco Polo.
Although people enjoyed reading the book, many of them thought that Marco Polo's stories about China were too fantastic to be true. But Marco Polo always stood by his tales. His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day late in the afternoon, while working to support hisfamily, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby pond(池塘). He dropped his tools and ran to the pond. There, up to his neck in the water, was a terrified boy, crying and struggling to free himself. Obviously the boy did not know how to swim. Fleming jumped into the pond and quickly swam toward the boy. He saved the boy who could have been a terrible death.
The next day, a very cool carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's house. A well-dressed noble man stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Fleming saved the day before.
“I want to repay you,” said the nobleman. “You saved my son's life.”
“No, I can't accept any payment for what I did,” the Scottish farmer replied, waving off the offer.
At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the farm house, confused by who was visiting them.
“Is that your son?” the nobleman asked.
“Yes,” the farmer replied proudly.
“I'll make you a deal. Let me take him with me. I promise you that I will give him a good education.
If the boy is anything like his father, he'll grow up to be a man you can be proud of.”
And he did. In time, Fleming's son graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London and went on to become a famous doctor.
