Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches. So if you play “cat and mouse”with someone, you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. It takes years to grow up. But 14-year-old Chen Xiyue from Shanghai Longlin Middle School says she feels much older this week. “Within three days, I did many things for the first time in my life,”she said, “like making the bed, living away from home, sharing a room with others and going camping(露营). I can take good care of myself.”
About 2500 other teenagers from nine schools of Shanghai had the same experience as Chen. From Monday to Wednesday this week, Chen and her classmates went to the Oriental Green Boat(东方绿洲), a training centre for teenagers, to help them get ready for real life.
Chen Lei, a girl at Shanghai Meiyuan School, usually sees her parents every day. At first, she was scared(害怕的) to leave them. But soon she found that sharing one room with others can be a lot of fun. She was also surprised to find she could take care of herself. “One of my friends set the alarm clock(闹钟)wrong, so we all woke up one hour earlier,” she said. “But it didn’t matter. We were happy, and I didn’t miss home at all.”
Other students found it hard to do some simple things like making the bed.
“It took me nearly half an hour to make the covers look good,” said Zhu Bo, a boy from Meiyuan Middle School. In one activity called “Fourteenth Birthday”, students celebrated together to show everyone how they have grown up. “Through this training, the students can learn to be independent(独立的), get on well with others and have team spirit,” said Shen Xia, a Shanghai Weiyu Middle School teacher who led students at the centre.

Going to a friend’s house is very exciting. You may spend time with a friend and get to see where he lives. So remember to be polite.
When to arrive
The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you to his/her house, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come “around 3:00”, that means you can arrive a few minutes after 3:00, but it is also a good idea to arrive at the right time.
What to bring
Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend’s house. This could be a box of chocolates for you two to share(分享), or maybe a movie that you can watch together. You can also bring some flowers. A little present is a nice way to show your friend that you are excited to be at his house.
How to greet (问候)
When you visit your friend’s house, you may also meet his parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr or Mrs Smith. This will show them more respect(尊重).
It is a cool thing to visit a friend’s house. Be polite to your friend’s parents, and you will be invited again!
