Chinese scientist Yuan Longping, famous for developing first hybrid rice strain that pulled countless people out of hunger, passed away at 91 at about 1 p.m., May 22, 2021.
On China’s Twitterlike Sina Weibo, the news has been viewed 950 million times so far. “Three times a day, when we enjoy the fragrance of rice, you will be dearly remembered.” said a ment(评论)that has been liked more than 600,000 times.
Yuan once said he had two dreams — to “enjoy the cool under the rice crops taller than men” and that hybrid rice could be grown all over the world to help solve the global food scarcity.
Having spent over five decades in hybrid rice research, the academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering has helped China work a great wonder — feeding nearly onefifth of the world’s population with less than 9 percent of the world’s total land.
Since the 1980s, Yuan’s team has offered training courses in dozens of countries in Africa, the American and Asia — providing a robust food source in areas with a high risk of famine. Globally, more than 820 million people were hungry in 2018, according to a UN report. And if hybrid rice is planted in half of the world’s 147 million hectares of paddy fields, the additional yield alone can feed another 500 million people, said Y uan.
Now the focus of Yuan’s hybrid rice project has changed from increasing output to green and sustainable development. In September 2017, a strain of lowcadmium indica rice(低镉籼稻)developed by Yuan’s team and the Hunan provincial academy of agricultural sciences was able to reduce the average amount of cadmium in rice by more than 90 percent in areas suffering from heavy metal pollution.

The opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics was held in Beijing on Friday night, February 4th. Social media users described it with these words: amazing, glittering and dazzling.
The main stage of the ceremony in the National Stadium, monly known as the Bird’s Nest, is designed to be like a huge Chinese character “Zhong”, covering almost the whole stage. In fact, it is the world’s largest ground LED screen. The screen, with a size of 10,552 square meters, was actually made up of about 42,000 small LED modules. The supersized ground screen, together with a 10meterhigh vertical screen, allowed the audience to have a wonderful experience.
To build such a big ground LED screen wasn’t an easy task. As the main stage, on which all performances and the Parade of Nations took place, it had to be wearresistant, waterproof, electrically safe and able to support heavy weights. What was more challenging, as the stadium is openair, the ground screen had to be able to support the winter freezing temperature, as well as weather like rain and snow. To solve all the challenges, technicians built a special protective covering for it.
With the help of AI, 5G, AR and nakedeye 3D technologies from the pany CALA, which once offered them to the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics opening ceremony, the ceremony presented many amazing moments. The most unforgettable moment is when the Olympic Rings were “carved out” of a 3D cube shaped like a block of ice on the screen. Another great point is that children sang and danced across the stage, when stars appeared on the screen under their feet.
Thanks to the screens, creative ideas and high technologies, the twohour ceremony only needed around 3,000 excellent performers, pared with 15,000 during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics opening ceremony. It greatly meets the theme of energy saving.
Thomas Bach, the president of IOC believed that the 2022 Olympic Winter Games would be “in safe hands” when Beijing won the bid in 2015. The amazing ceremony showed the world that China has kept its promise of hosting a fantastic event with strong determination and confidence.
