M: Well, I _d__is_a_g_r_e_e_. I think Tony loved Claire. Remember he said to her that he didn’t want to _le_a_v_e_ her the next day, and that he felt more than just the _w__is_h_ to please her? Then he _k_is_s_e_d_ her.
AD: Unbelievable! Now, let’s move on to other _t_y_p_e_s_ of robots. You also found out about a tiny robot _p_l_a_n_e_, didn’t you?
EW: That’s right, Alan. This wonderful little robot weighs less than _9__ grams and has a _c_a_m_e_r_a_. In the near future it’ll be used to fly into _d_a_n_g_e_r_o_u_s_ areas and check if anyone is trapped _in_s_i_d_e_.
Listen again and fill in the blanks. A: (reading) Aibo can walk, sit, _l_i_e_ down
and wag its tail. It learns the name you give it and can a_n_s_w__e_r when you call it. It develops its own _p_e_r_s_o_n_a_li_t_y. It can learn about _5_0__ commands. V: (reading) Furby likes being p__a_tt_e_d_. At first he speaks his _o_w_n__ language, then he gradually switches to _E_n_g_l_is_h_ the more time you spend with him. (not reading) He looks like a big-eared _b_i_r_d_. Isn’t he so cute, Jamie?
K: Yes, Molly, but that was just part of Tony’s _r_o_l_e_. They made him so he couldn’t allow a human being to be _h_u_r_t. He could see that Claire was hurting herself by her _l_a_c_k_ of confidence.
AD: I wonder _w__h_e_th_e_r_ it does a good job, but I want one anyway!
EW: Well, Alan, you’d probably also _w_a_n_t_ a PaPeRo.
AD: A what? EW: A PaPeRo. P-A-P-E-R-O. It’s an
Emma? EW: Well, Alan, I thought we’d have a
_q_u_i_c_k_ look at the world of robots. AD: That’s an interesting __to_p__ic__.
EW: Well, we actually already use robots in many _in_d_u_s_t_r_ia_l_ situations, nut now they’re also being _d_e_v_el_o_p_e_d_ for use around the house. Let me tell you about a very clever carpet _c_le_a_n_e_r_ that can move from room to room cleaning your house by _i_t_se_l_f__. You can programme it, so that it cleans when you’re _a_w_a_y__ and you can control it from your c_o_m__p_u_t_e_r_ at the office.
K: Actually, I suppose that was the company’s greatest _m__is_t_a_k_e_.
M: Er? K: They made the robot look so much like
a _r_ea_l__ man, so it was bound to cause _tr_o_u_b_l_e_! M: Yes, you’re right.
Listen again and fill in the blanks.
AD: Now it’s time for our _w_e_e_k_ly_ chat with the science news _r_e_p_o_r_t_er__, Emma Woods. Hi, Emma.
EW: Hi, Alan. AD: So, what do you _h_a_v_e__ for us today,
So he tried to make her __fe_e_l good about herself. It had _n_o_th__in_g_ to do with emotion – that was just how he was _m_a_d_e__. M: Yes Kate, but he did hurt Claire. K: How? M: He was so _k_i_n_d__ to her that she fell in love with him. So it must have hurt her when he was _t_a_k_e_n__ away. K: True, true. I guess that’s why the company had to _r_e_b_u_il_d__ hum … er … the machine I mean!
Listen to Part 1.
ROBOT PETS
Amanda, Victoria and Jamie are reading about four robot pets and then discussing whether robot pets can be real pets. A = Amanda V = Victoria J = Jamie
M: Yes, such a _s_h_a_m__e_ really. I’d like a robot like Tony living at my _h__o_u_se__. Imagine a handsome man _w_h_o_s_e_ only purpose in life to __p_le_a_s_e__ you.
J: Well, Victoria, I think he looks _s_t_ra_n__g_e. I like these ones, _th__o_u_g_h_. (reading) Paro can open and close its _e_y_e_s_ and move its flippers. Tama _r_e_c_o_g_n_iz_e_s her own names, She purrs when she’s patted. That shows she’s _h_a_p_p_y_, but if you hit her she’ll give you an _a_n_g_r_y_ hiss. Gradually her behaviour _c_h_a_n_g_e_s_ and she develops her own personality.
M: Don’t you think that was a great _l_o_v_e_ story, Kate?
K: No, not _r_e_a_ll_y_! M: You didn’t? Well, I loved it. There was
so much _e_m_o_t_io_n_ between Tony and Claire. K: Molly, that’s _r_u_b_b_i_s_h_. Tony was just a _m__a_ch__in_e__. Yes, maybe Claire fell in love with him, but I don’t believe _r_o_b_o_t_s can feel emotion of any kind. That’s the _d_i_ff_e_r_en__ce__ between them and us.
AD: That’s amazing! So, what can it do? EW: Well, it can check your _e_m__a_il. It can
help children do _r_es_e_a_r_c_h_ on the Internet for their homework, talk to them about their day at _s_ch__o_o_l , and even _p_l_a_y__ games with them.
Listen to the text.
THE WORLD OF ROBOTS Listen to radio presenter, Alan Dobson (AD), talking to a science news reporter, Emma Woods (EW). About robots in today’she text.
SATISFACTION GUARANTEED

AD: So it could _s_a_v_e_ a lot of people’s lives. EW: Yes, and, recently, a _w__a_k_i_n_g chair has
been developed that the _m__a_k_e_r_s_ believe will help people who can’t walk to go up and down _s_t_a_ir_s_. AD: Well Emma, thanks so much for telling us a little _b_i_t about the exciting world of _r_o_b_o_ts_. Now what are you going to talk about next week?
egg-shaped _p_e_r_s_o_n_a_l robot that you can talk to. AD: You’re kidding. You mean it can u__n_d_e_r_st_a_n_d_ you?
EW: That’s right. I’ve heard that it understands _6_5_0__ phrases and speaks more than _3_,0_0_0__ words. And it can recognize _d_i_ff_e_r_e_n_t people.
