第二部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选顼中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Teens who are changing the world
Teenagers are, in fact, solving the problems of today with groundbreaking inventions. KeianaCavé, U.S.A.
The largest oil slick(浮油) caused by the oil overflow occurring in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 led to baby dolphins dying at six times the usual rate.
Watching the news on TV, Cavéfelt that there must be some hidden environmental damage. Aged just 15, she began studying what happens to oil when it's left on the ocean’s surface. The teenager discovered that when it’s hit by UV rays from the sun, oil reacts to form chemicals which cause cancer.
Cavéhas turned her work into two patents for methods of detecting the dangerous chemicals.
Wang Sunming and Li Jingpeng, China
Realizing the extent to which bacteria spread on public door handles, Wang and Li sought a material—titanium oxide(钛白粉)—that could adequately kill bacteria. However, the chemical isn’t very effective unless exposed to UV rays. Since most door handles are inside buildings—beyond the reach of UV rays from the sun, Wang and Li turned to LED lights and created a LED door handle. When a person touches the handle, the UV light switches on, activating (使活跃) the titanium oxide on it and instantly killing 99.8 percent of the bacteria that might otherwise have been spread.
Julian Rios Cantu, Mexico
This inventor was just 13 years old when his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. He watched in horror as the tumor (肿瘤) grew from the size of a green bean to the size of a golf ball.
After his mother recovered, Cantu set out to protect others from the disease. He developed wearable device that may be able to detect the early signs of breast cancer. If the project succeeds, it can save millions of lives.
21.Why did Cavé begin studying oil left on the ocean’s surface?
A. To test her unique prediction.
B. To prevent the oil overflowing.

A. It hasn’t been put into use at present.
B. It can keep a record of tumors’ growth.
C. It can stop the tumor from growing fast.
D. It helped to discover his mother’s disease.
24. What can we learn from the teenagers mentioned in the text?
A. The problems of today are all solved by teenagers.
B. They are highly educated and truly creative.
C. A good beginning makes a good ending.

B
It was dinnertime for the Rangers, a group of mostly Indigenous (本地的) Australians who had spent a long day cleaning up the polluted beaches of the continent’s northern coast. Soon they would be eating freshly caught fish and seafood cooked under the stars on an open fire, as their ancestors did.
The Rangers are of more than 100 Indigenous groups spread across Australia who have taken on the job of protecting the land of their forefathers. In Arnhem Land, they are the protectors of 3,300 square miles of land and sea. They comb the beaches by hand, picking up as much rubbish as possible. The task is very difficult as each day it delivers waves of new rubbish.
For the Rangers, cleaning the beaches is more than a vacation. For a people whose culture is strongly tied to the land, protecting the environment is equal to preserving their history.
However, colonization forcefully broke their connection to the land generations ago. Indigenous people were displaced and their cultural practices outlawed. Tens of thousands of years of traditional land management ended, and as a result many parts of the country now face serious disasters from invasive plant and animal species, bush fires and land mismanagement.
In recent years, the government has restored more than 20 percent of Australia’s land to Indigenous owners. Since 2007, the Indigenous Rangers Organizations have been at work protecting this land.
Luck, one of the few non-Indigenous employees working with the Rangers, said the combination of old and new techniques and an appreciation for the culture of Indigenous workers has been critical to the program’s success.
“You are working with staff who see the worl d different to you, so there is a much higher focus on the cultural aspects of work and life,” he said.
“Being a ranger is a source of confidence. You feel strong,” said Terence, a senior ranger. “Here we still live on the land. The culture is still alive.”
25.What did Indigenous Australians live on in the past?
A.On rubbish picked up by hand.
B. On catching the fish and seafood.
B.On protecting the land. D. On invasive plants and animals.
26.What do the Rangers think of cleaning the beaches?
A. It’s a job left by their ancestors.
B. It’s just a vacation.
C. It’s a difficult task.
D. It’s their culture.
27.Why has the government restored the land to Indigenous owners?
A.The polluted land needs better management.
B.The land belongs to them.
C.Their cultural practices were outlawed.
D.The people were too strong.
28. What can we learn from the last three paragraphs?
A. Not many employees are the Indigenous Australians.
B. Their new techniques are successful.
C. Culture is important to the Indigenous Australians.
D. Both Luck and Terence are rangers.
C
Aggressive driving has been a problem on our roadways for a while, and it seems to only be getting worse. Incidents of screaming, rude gestures, and sometimes even violence are reported frequently on our roadways to the point where it has earned its own name: road rage. It’s a term coined by the local news station in Los Angeles after a string of shootings occurred on several freeways in the city. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (The NHTSA) defines it as when a driver "commits moving traffic offenses so as to endanger other persons or property. It is described as an attack either with a motor vehicle or other dangerous weapon by the driver or passenger of one motor vehicle on the driver or passenger of another motor vehicle".This definition places the blame on the driver.
You may like to think that road rage is something that only happens to other people, but the truth is that many of us are guilty of aggressive behavior on the road.Much too often, a road rage incident occurs because the person was under stress in other areas of their life. Bad traffic can also add to stress. This then explodes whensomeone else on the road has acted in an aggressive way, whether intentional or not.
If you feel offended by another driver, whether the fault is truly yours or not, do not retaliate the other driver on the road. This will only cause the situation to get worse. Remind yourself that the other driver is just bad at handling stress or under stress. Avoid eye contact and continue to practice safe driving habits.
Unfortunately, it does not look like this problem is going away soon. So when faced with such a case, all you can do is be a considerate, aware driver that follows the rules of the road. While it may be difficult, do not give in to feelings of anger or rage on the road. Think twice before you blow the horn. You never know what may set off the person in another car. Getting home safely is more important than teaching someone a dangerous lesson.
29. What does the definition of Road Rage imply according to the NHTSA?
A. Road rage may happen not only to drivers but to passengers.
B. Aggressive driving is getting worse and worse.
C. Those who keep the traffic rules won’t have road rage.
D. Road rage will be punished according to the traffic rules.
30. The underlined word “retaliate” in the third paragraph can be replaced by “_____”.
A. dismiss
B. control
C. revenge
D. compare
31. What will the author agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. New traffic rules should be made for road rage.
B. Drivers should learn to control themselves on the road.
C. Blowing the horn is dangerous and aggressive.
D. Do not give in to whoever offends you on the road.
D
Bring your partner, grab a seat, pick up your baby catalog and start choosing. What features would you want your baby to have? Brown hair or blond? Boy or girl? A muscle-bound sports hero or an intelligent book worm? When you're done selecting, head to the counter and it's time to start creating your new child. Doesn’t this sound like a scary thought?
With rapid advances in scientific knowledge of the human genome (基因组) and our increasing ability to modify or change genes, "designing" your baby could well be possible in the near future.
Techniques of genetic screening are already being used --- whereby embryos (胚胎) can be selected by sex and checked for certain disease-bearing genes, especially in Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and genetic diseases will be cured in embryos by replacing faulty sections of DNA with healthy DNA. Furthermore, the developing technologies of genetic change open up a whole new set of possibilities resulting in so-called "designer babies". The technique, known as inheritable genetic modification, results in the altered genes being passed on to future generations, which could potentially change the human species, thus creating the intense debate: Should we be doing this?
Richard Hayes, director of Genetics and Society, said, “the use of embryo screening can help prevent the passing on of serious diseases and disorders, allowing couples at risk to have healthy children. But for non-medical purposes, we believe this would destroy humanity and create a dangerous race.”
As technology advances, many specific human characteristics partly influenced by genes could come under human control. Meanwhile the ability to generate large quantities of cells with altered genes opens the door to a new research into many diseases. Not only will it allow us to study diseases more in-depth, but it also could be a key step in the development of future stem cell therapies. However, the misuse of this technology could have extreme consequences for the human race. The last thing we need now is a genetic elite (精英). Worse still, it will lead to an objectification (人格物化) of children.
Therefore, it is urgent for people to begin debating the issues so that correct rules and regulations can be established before the technology is accessible.
32. Why does the author give so many questions in Paragraph 1?
A. To show that getting a baby is easy.
B. To start a reflection on designing babies.
C. To question whether choosing babies is legal.
D. To introduce a breakthrough in science.
33. What’s the attitude of Richard Hayes towards the technologies of gene modifying?
A. Cautious.
B. Supportive.
C. Indifferent.
D. Acceptable.
34. What does the underlined sentence mean in the fifth paragraph?
A. We shouldn’t encourage a child to be a so-called elite.
B. A normal child will become an elite by “designing”.
C. We will eventually get agenetic elite in the future.
D. A genetic elite is not we desire at all.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A hope to couples without children: genetic modification.
B. Genetic change makes Man a super species?
C. Designer babies: creating a perfect child?
D. Put an end to gene-bearing diseases.

Have you ever thought about it? Computers of the future might replace humans. Some researchers have proposed that computers will have inbuilt intelligence. And, the computer networking will be sure to result in the death of “distance”.36 Looking at the history of computers, we realize they’ve developed from simple electronic calculators to modern handheld devices. Great scientists of the old times have brought brilliant advances tocomputing. 37 Computers can perform operations with great precision (精确度)and at very high speeds.
What does the future hold for computer technology? Well, the future generations might cooperate with robots. 38 They may be employed for repetitive tasks that may threaten people’s lives. Computer researchers also picture the birth of fully developed artificial intelligence. Robots and artificial intelligence may make it possible for daily chores and difficult tasks at work to be performed without humans.
39 Owing to their small size, it’ll be easy to include them into the smallest devices, thus increasing their use. Their higher computation speeds will make many operations easier and further save human efforts and time.
In addition, computers may be able to communicate with humans like humans because they may be able to understand the context of words, thus making them better at understanding human language. 40 Anyway, computers have a bright future.
A.Robots may replace workers in various fields.
B.Together, they may work wonders in many fields.
C.So the world will become a very small place to live in.
puters of the future are going to be faster and smaller.

We live in the countryside. Most of which we see is beauty and nature. One of the exceptions to the beauty is the litter some people throw out their windows as they are driving on the roads. One of the few drawbacks of livingin the countryside is that public service, such as litter collection, are little available than they are closer to the city.
A helping habit that my family practise regularly are picking up litter in our surrounding area. We have become so accustomed to dothis that my little brother will often say, “There's some litter, Daddy, stop the car!” And we will often pull over and pick it up. It may seem strange, and we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practical anywhere. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we live in. He smiledat me and said, “I saw you doing it, and it seemed like the good idea.”
