“By the time the children born today leave school, China is to be the world’s largest economy. So it’s time to look beyond the traditional focus on French and German and get many more children learning Mandarin.” To strengthen his message , he quoted Nelson Mandela—the former president of South Afr ica who said “If you talk to a man in a language he understands that goes to his head; if you talk to him in his own language that goes to his heart.”

Professor Dame Helen Wallace, the British Academy’s foreign secretary, said, “ a lack of qualified teachers could be a barrier to improve its popularity.”

Back to its origin
The University of Sheffield is a research university in the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It is one of the original “red brick” universities, which are a group of top and famous old universities. The University of Sheffield was originally formed by the combination of three colleges. The Sheffield School of Medicine was founded in 1828, followed in 1879 by the opening of Firth College by Mark Firth, a steel manufacturer (制造商), to teach arts and science subjects. Firth College then helped to provide money for the opening of the Sheffield Technical School in 1884 to teach applied science. In 1897 the three institutions were joined together to form the University College of Sheffield, which in turn became the University of Sheffield by Royal Charter (特许) in 1905. 24.(8分)Y oung sunflowers turn and swing every day. New findings add to evidence that the plants are animal-like.
Harmer, a professor in the University of California at Davis, Department of Plant Biology, carried out a series of experiments on sunflowers in the field, in pots outdoors and in indoor growth chambers.
By staking plants so that they could not move, Harmer showed that he could destroy their ability to track the sun. He also noticed that sunflowers prevented from moving were not as tough and leafy as those that were free to move. When plants were moved indoor with a settled overhead light, they continued to swing back and forth for a few days.
The indoor plants did start trac king the “sun” again when the apparent source of lighting was moved across the room. The plants could reliably track the movement and return at night when the artificial day was close to a 24-hour cycle, but not when it was closer to 30 hours.
When sunflowers track the sun, the east sides of their stems grew more rapidly than the west sides. At night, the west sides grew faster as the stem swung the other way. The team identified a number of genes that were expressed at higher levels on the sunward side of the plant during the day or on the other side at night. A plant growth-regulating hormone (激素), called auxin, appears to be a key driver.
The “dance” to the sun cycle obviously slows when the sunflower matures (成熟) and its flowers open up. At that point, the plants stop moving during the day and settle down facing the sun in the east.
“Bees like warm flowers.” Harmer said, adding that the bees are cold-blooded, so landing on a warm flower saves them energy and perhaps feels really good.
“The morning warmth changes the flowers in a way to make them more appealing to insects, perhaps causing them to release more attractive scents earlier in the day.” he said “We’re currently testing this idea.”
1、Why did Harmer do the experiment on sunflowers?
A.To see how sunflowers grow up
B.To show what sunflowers’ genes are.
C.To study why sunflowers track the sun.
D.To check if sunflowers swing in cloudy days.
2、What does the underlined word “staking” probably mean in Paragraph 3?
A.tracking B.fining
C.growing D.searching
3、What is the result of sunflowers being stopped from moving?
A.They will produce a number of new genes.
B.They will grow faster than usual.
C.They won’t swing back though set free.
D.They won’t grow well.
4、What is the advantage of sunflowers’ dance to the sun?
A.They attract more insects. B.They save more energy.
C.They mature more rapidly. D.They produce more flowers.
25.(10分)Finding a mountain goat resting high on a cliff(悬崖) might thrill many of the millions of tourists who visit Wyomin g’s Grand Teton National Park every year, but park officials say it might be time for the bearded animals to go.
The problem, according to the park, is that Grand Teton’s 100 or so mountain goats threaten about 80 bighorn sheep. The bighorn sheep numbered as many as 125 just a few years ago. The strong goats spread disease and compete with bighorn sheep for food. Unlike small-sized bighorn sheep, Grand Teton’s mountain goats aren’t native to the park. They were introduced to the park in the 1960s.
Grand Tet on spokeswoman Denise Germann said, “We’ve got a management responsibility to protect the native species. After hearing from the public on the proposal (建议) in January, park officials expect to decide as soon as
mid-February on what to do about the mountai n goats.”
The goats are reproducing rapidly. Now might be the best time to reduce the animals before they’re too many to bring under control, according to the Park Service.
One wildlife biologist who studies bighorn sheep praised the proposal. Mountain goa ts’ original habitat is nowhere close to where they’ve been introduced in the U.S. to provide hunting opportunities, said Rob Roy Ramey II, with Nederland, Colorado-based Wildlife Science International, Inc.
Wildlife managers should get rid of mountain goats not only in Grand Teton but elsewhere to help struggling bighorn sheep, Ramey said. “Unfortunately, state wildlife agencies sell nonnative wildlife viewing opportunities to the public,” Ramey said. “This is not a zoo in the wilderness. It should really be for native wildlife.”
1、What can be learnt about the bighorn sheep in the park?
A.Their size is huge. B.Their number is decreasing.
C.They arrived in the 1960s. D.They threaten local species.
2、How did the public help park officials protect the bighorn sheep?
A.By providing suggestions. B.By driving away mountain goats.
C.By volunteering in the park. D.By taking over Grand Teton National Park.
3、What is Germann’s attitude towards the bighorn sheep?
A.Curious. B.Proud.
C.Surprised. D.Concerned.
4、What was the purpose of bringing in mountain goats in the beginning?
A.To offer hunting chances.
B.To sell nonnative wildlife.
C.To satisfy wildlife managers.
D.To increase diversities of sheep.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear Tom,
I'm very glad to receive your letter. And it's a pleasure to tell you something about how I spent the winter holiday.
First, I had a good rest because recently I often felt tired as a result of my heavy study burden as well as lack of sleep and physical exercise. In the evening before the Spring Festival , my family members got together and had a big meal. We had delicious food, wore new clothes and set off firecrackers .Dumplings are the most traditional food. I got some money from my parents for good luck. What's more, I had a trip with my friends to appreciate the beauty of nature and breathe fresh air. What did you do in your holidays? I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Li Ping。
