Researchers in Britain are driving the environmental movement to a new level. A team from the University of
Warwick has built what it calls the world’s first completely environmentally friendly Formula Three racing car.
The car is made mainly of renewable materials, like plants and vegetables. The structure around the car is made from natural plant fibers and potatoes. The steering wheel(方向盘) is made from root vegetables like carrots. The engine uses bio-fuel made from vegetable oil and waste chocolate.
The new racing car is extremely fast. The car has a top speed of two hundred fifteen kilometers an hour. And it can go from zero to ninety-five kilometers an hour in just two and a half seconds.
The racing car meets all of the Formula Three racing requirements except for its biodiesel(生物柴油) engine.
Automobile racing is one of the most widely watched sports in the world. But it is also considered one of the least friendly sports to the environment. Racing cars burn a lot of fuel, and create a lot of air pollution. In recent years, the racing industry has taken steps to protect the environment. More racing companies are now producing cars that use less energy. These cars produce less pollution than cars that depend on traditional fuel, like gasoline.
Last month, the new racing car was set to run in its first competitive race at the Formula Three Championship Final at Brands Hatch. It would have been the first biodiesel-powered car to race at Formula Three. Current Formula Three rules let only gasoline-powered car to compete. Officials needed permission from all of the Formula Three racers for the biodiesel-powered car to compete. They were unable to contact one of the drivers, so the new racing car didn’t appear in the event. In test runs, the new r acing car was the fifth fastest among the Formula Three race cars. Supporters are hoping to have the fuel problem solved in time to compete in the next season.
56. What’s the second paragraph mainly about?
A. What materials the new racing car is made of.
B. Why researchers built the new racing car.
C. The characteristics of the new racing car.
D. The process of the new racing car being designed.
57. According to the passage, the ______ of the new racing car doesn’t meet the Formula Three racing
requirements.
A. speed
B. appearance
C. weight
D. engine
58. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. the new racing car is the first environmentally friendly car
B. automobile racing could be forbidden in the near future
C. many people like to watch automobile racing
D. the new racing car will be allowed to compete in the next season of Formula Three racing
59. Why didn’t the new racing car compete at the Formula Three Championship Final last month?
A. Because the new racing car still needs testing.
B. Because officials needed each racer’s permission but failed to contact one.
C. Because there’re some technical problems to be solved.
D. Because few drivers think it is fast enough.

PHILADELPHIA --- A woman who was pregnant(怀孕的) with several children through an affair with a man unaware of her pregnancies was charged Monday with murdering after tests on remains found in coolers or wrapped in concrete showed at least four infants were born alive but killed, authorities said.
Michele Kalina, 44, kept the remains in her closet until her husband and daughter found them in July, authorities said Monday.
Kalina, a nurse's assistant, also bore a daughter from the same affair in 2003 but gave the baby up for adoption, authorities said. She and her husband have a teenage daughter and had a 13-year-old son who died in 2000 after a long illness.
The husband and daughter found five sets of infant remains in a closet this summer in coolers, one of which was filled with concrete, police said. At least four of the babies were born at or near birth term, then killed in a manner like asphyxia(窒息), poisoning or neglect, authorities determined.
Kalina has been in custody since August on abuse-of-corpse charges. She denied that she had had any other
3
children or pregnancies until shown with the adoption paperwork, police said.
Jeffrey Kalina had suspected at least once that his wife was pregnant, police said. The boyfriend, who was not identified, said he did not know about her pregnancy, although he said he noticed her abdomen(腹部) growing after their affair began in 1996. But every time over the years, Kalina managed to remove his doubts.
DNA tests on the remains show the boyfriend fathered at least three and possibly four of the babies, authorities said.
Kalina has a stable work history, with 14 years on the job and no maternity leave(产假) or extended medical leaves. But she acknowledged to police that she is an alcoholic and suffers blackouts(晕) occasionally.
Until her arrest, she lived in a high-rise apartment with her husband, who is disabled, and their 19-year-old daughter. Jeffrey Kalina told authorities that the containers had been moved to the apartment with other belongings from their prior home.
In interviews in early August, Kalina told police she had forbidden her husband and daughter from going in the closet and said she had been meaning to clean it.
60. How many children did the Kalinas once have?
A. One.
B. Two.
C. Seven.
D. Eight.
61. What’s the probable reason for which the mother shou ld kill her babies?
A. Because they had too many children to raise.
B. Because the father disliked the children.
C. Because they were born illegally.
D. Because they would surely become ill and die.
62. Why do you guess Kalina denied to police she had other children or pregnancies?
A. Maybe she had forgotten about it.
B. She happened to be suffering a blackout.
C. She made a misunderstanding about the question.
D. She meant to cover some guilt.
63. Which of the following can best serve as the title of the news?
A. Mom kills new-born babies
B. Disabled husband finds his wife’s secret
C. Cruel mother has a stable work history
D. Infants are lives to be valued too.

How do you know if your home is an easy aim for thefts? Around the holidays, many families don’t consider taking proper measures to prevent their homes from suffering holiday thefts. With just a few simple steps, you can better make sure of the safety of your home during all of the holiday celebrations. Here are a few tips for making it difficult to tell you are away from home.
● Either have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail and newspapers, or tell your mailperson to hold your mail until you return. Nothing says “Hey, we are not home!” like when your postbox is filled with all kinds o f mails and you have many different newspapers in your driveway.
● Set several different lights in your house on random timers (随机定时器). Don’t leave your outdoor lights on all the time. Instead, put your outside lights on timers to be on during the nights. If an outdoor light remains on for days at a time, it means that nobody is home to turn it off.
● If you have pets that you are not taking with you on vacation, leave them with a friend, rather than having someone come into your house every day to take care of them. When thefts see a neighbor or friend entering your house every day, they will know you are not home.
● Close all your curtains when you leave town. This is effective to deter possible thefts, as no one can see what is in your house. If they don’t know what there is to take, then the risk is even greater for them to break in.
● This article just has suggested a few tips to help you keep your house safe while you are on holiday. Nothing can truly protect your home unless you have it monitored by a professional home security system.
64. To make sure your home is better protected, what does the writer advise you to do?
A. Have all the curtains closed.
B. Stop your mail service at once.
C. Turn to your close neighbors or friends.
D. Equip your home with security system.
65. Most of the tips mentioned in the text seem to ______.
A. be very popular with families
B. have no effect on preventing thefts
C. give a false impression on thefts
D. be a little hard to be brought into effect
66. The underlined word “deter” probably means “______”.
A. discover
B. discourage
C. surprise

In anyone's eyes, it would be a series of highlighted diplomatic moves by the United States: its Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is on her sixth, 13-day Asia trip, and its President Barack Obama next month will go to Asia, again.
Experts believe such an intensive Asia arrangements of the US leaders further reveals the 21-month "proactive"(先发制人的) diplomacy by the Obama administration to restore America's Asian influence which has been weakened under the George W. Bush term.
"This has been our priority since day one of the Obama Administration, because we know that much of the history of the 21st century will be written in Asia. This region will see the most transformative economic growth on the planet," Clinton said in her speech in Hawaii on Thursday.
No wonder, as Clinton's words just reflect a growing idea that Asia has become the most dynamic region and a new power center of the world.
"Clinton's speech and her 13-day trip to the region is evidence of the growing importance of the Asia-Pacific region to the United States and the Obama administration's determination to play a leading role in shaping its future," Bonnie Glaser of the Center for Strategic and International Studies told Xinhua.
In her speech on US Asia strategy, Clinton said the Obama administration is practicing "forward-deployed" diplomacy(“前缘外交”政策), sending the full range of diplomatic personnel --- including highest-ranking officials, development experts, "into every corner and every capital of the Asia-Pacific region."
She outlined three main "tools" of US engagement in Asia: US allies, new partnerships and cooperation with key regional institutions, building a multi-facet fashion of US involvement in Asia.
In a quite aggressive move, Clinton claimed the United States will seek a seat at the table of any regional institution in the Asia-Pacific as long as it concerns the security, political and economic interests of her country.
Undoubtedly, as Clinton put it in a clear way, US goals in Asia are "sustaining and strengthening US leadership role" in the region. However, it remains in doubt how the US effort to dominate(占优势) would play out in a world that has become more and more multi-polarized.
"Secretary Clinton's speech reflects that the United States wants to make up for the lost time under the Bush administration and wants to resume American leadership in the Asia-Pacific region," Christopher McNally, expert with the Hawaii-based think tank of the East West Center, told Xinhua.
"But since the relative position of the United States in terms of economic, diplomatic and military power is gradually weakened in Asia, in the long-term, it is difficult to see America keeping its traditional position of dominant power in the region," said McNally.
67. Which of the following is TRUE about the two US leaders’ successive visits to Asia?
A. They are actually usual diplomatic activities with no special purposes.
B. They were arranged the day Obama came to power.
C. They are intended to sustain and strengthen its dominant position in Asia.
D. They are meant to be an attack against China.
68. Why does America want to seek a seat at the table of any regional institution in the Asia-Pacific?
A. Because the economy in Asia is growing rapidly in the 21st century.
B. Because its influence in Asia has been weakened under the Obama administration.
C. Because it is the critical factor affecting the success of its "forward-deployed" diplomacy.
D. Because it is concerned about the regional economic and political interests and security.
69. America is confident in the engagement in Asia because of the following except ______.
A. its allies all over the world
B. its new partnerships in Asia
C. its leadership role in the world
D. its cooperation with key institutions in Asia
70. According to some experts, the realization of America’s intention is doubtful because ______.
5
A. China won’t allow such kind of things to happen around her
B. present world is becoming more and more multi-polarized
C. America is standing on the side of injustice
D. American economy has not been totally recovered

Health researchers have noticed that some groups of people are more consistently healthy than others, and wondered… Is it race? Income? Where you live? In the United States, these disagreements in health outcomes have been the focus of intense research for the past several decades.
Harvard University health policy researcher Ellen Meara says scholars have found some clues as to why some groups of people have more or less disease than others. She says one important factor in people's health is the amount of education they have.
In her most recent paper, Meara looked at data from the United States census(人口普查). These counts of people occur every 10 years. Meara and her colleagues examined data from several decades.
“We looked at life expectancy(寿命预期) at age 25,” Meara says.
“How many additional years can you expect to live if you arrive at age 25 and your education has stopped at high school, or sooner? Versus how many years can you expect to live if you've reached aged 25 and you've gone on to at lea st some college…”
Meara says they found that in 1990, a 25-year-old who only had some secondary school could expect to live for a total of 75 years. In 2000, a 25 year old with some secondary education could also expect to live to the age of 75.
In contrast, for a better educated 25-year-old, they could expect to live to the age of 80 in 1990. Someone with a similar education level in the year 2000 could expect to live to be more than 81 years, 81.6 years to be exact.
Meara says, not only do better-educated people live longer to begin with, but in the past ten years, more educated people have made gains in the length of their lives. Meanwhile, the life expectancy hasn’t changed for less educated people.
Some of these gains can be explained. Meara says researchers know that people who are more educated are more likely to quit smoking cigarettes, or not start at all, compared to people with less education.
“I think it's a reminder not to be satisfactory," Meara says. "Just because a population overall appears t o be getting healthier, it doesn't always mean that those advantages and successes that many people have enjoyed really extend into all parts of the population. And I think that's something to really pay attention to regardless of whether you live in the U S or elsewhere.”
Meara points out that education can often determine income --- people with more education frequently make more money. This makes them aware of health care, and purchase other resources and services that can keep them healthier. But the data on income do NOT show that people who make more money are automatically healthier.
Meara says education is key. People need to be educated in order to take advantage of opportunities for better health.

One possible version:
Life is said to be full of many unexpected “ifs”. For every “if” in life, there’s a solution, but different people deal with it differently.
The advertisement above shows us that there are always some unexpected “ifs”, but not all of us can foresee them clearly. So, buying insurance for life is likely the best way to protect ourselves from a deadly “if”. To my mind, “if” can be good, “if” can be alarming, or “if” can be deadly. Life, as described in the picture above, is not only full of incidents, but also of many invisible possibilities, opportunities and other good fortunes. The problem is many of us always take life for granted and do not have enough plans for such various “ifs”, and always feel regretted when they eventually come.
So what I want to stress is if all of us can do our best to prepare for the future, we will either make up for the unbearable loss and sufferings, or make it possible to seize all the fortunes in store for us.
Life is said to be full of many unexpected “ifs”. For every “if” in life, there’s a solution, but different people deal with it differently.
As is described in a life insurance ad, life is full of unexpectable happenings, as “if” is among the word “life”. It is advised that buying life insurance can save the unexpected losses to some degree.
I’d like to look at the “ifs” from two different angles. They may be harmful or even dangerous. Therefore, we have to get fully prepared so as to better deal with them and reduce the losses to the greatest degree. On the opposite side, they can be in our favor, in which case there seems nothing for us to do but enjoy the good luck and congratulate ourselves. However, we should also make plans so that we won’t be too overjoyed to cause any trouble or neglect some hidden dangers.
In short, we should hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Only in this way can we avoid the danger behind the luck and seize the opportunity behind the misfortune.
