13、People are always afraid of making mistakes. But sometimes it's not bad to make mistakes, and here is why.
At first, mistakes are a clear sign that you are trying new things. It's always good to try new things, because when you are trying new things you are growing. If you never try new things, how can you improve? How can you create? The simple answer is,“You can't.” Look around you, everything you see is the result of someone trying new things. Another good thing about mistakes is this: when you are making mistakes, you are learning. Consider this: Edison failed
10,000 times before he invented the light bulb. When he was asked how he felt to fail that many times, he said that he hadn't failed 10,000 times, but rather had learned 10,000 things that didn't work.
Finally, when you make a mistake, you are that much closer to success. Why? Because you have said what you should say, and you have done what you should do. Every time you make a mistake, you are closer to success. But it doesn't mean that you can make mistakes without thin-king. Instead, when you try new things you have to think them over, so that you can keep away from some unne-cessary mistakes.
We shouldn't spend all our time and money on the only one way, but use them correctly. Because our time and money are limited (有限的).
There is an old saying, “If you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough.” So go bravely and make mistakes. And learn. And grow. And succeed.
1.If you are making a mistake, that means________.
A.you're careful B.you're kind
C.you're growing D.you know nothing
2.If you never try new things, you can't________.

3.After Edison failed 10,000 times, he________.
A.gave up

C.invented the computer
D.invented 10,000 new things
4.When you make a mistake, you are closer to________.
A.time B.money C.success D.everything
5.What's the main idea of the passage?
A.Never make mistakes.
B.Y ou can make mistakes without thinking.
C.Sometimes it's good to make mistakes.
D.Making mistakes is terrible.

The traveller explain ed that he didn’t need any food and that, in fact, he was planning to make a soup to share with them instead. The villagers watched suspiciously as he built a fire and filled a pot with water With great ceremony(仪式), he pulled a stone from a bag, and dropp ed the stone into the pot of water. After a moment, he smelt the soup and shouted with excitement, “How delicious the soup is!” As the villagers began to show interest, he mentioned how good the soup would be with just a little cabbage in it. A villager brought out a cabbage to share. This episode(情节) repeated itself until the soup had cabbage, carrots, onions, and beets—indeed, a full pot of soup that could feed everyone in the village was ready. This story describes when there are not enough resources(资源), humans will store things. We do not want to share. The story of stone soup helps us realize that, in doing so, we often prevent ourselves and everyone else from having a feast(盛宴).The meaning of this story goes far beyond food. We keep to ourselves ideas, love, and energy, thinking we will be richer, but in fact we make the world, and ourselves, poorer. The traveller was able to see that the villagers were holding back, and he had the ability to inspire(激发) them to give. 18、When the great library of Alexandria was burned, the story goes, one book was saved. It was not a valuable book, and so a poor man bought it for a few copper coins (铜钱). Between its pages there was something very interesting. It was a thin paper on which was written the secret of the touchstone!
The touchstone was a small pebble (卵石) that could turn any common metal into gold. The writing explained that it was among thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it. But the secret was this: the real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles were cold.
So the man camped on the seashore and began testing pebbles. He thought that if he picked up ordinary pebbles and put them down again, he might pick up the same pebble hundreds of times. So, when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea.
He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone.
The days became weeks and the weeks into months. One day, however, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He had formed such a strong habit of throwing each pebble into the sea. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity. Unless we are careful, it’s easy to fail to recognize an opportunity when it is at hand. And it’s just as easy to throw it away.

3.The man threw pebbles into the sea _____.
A.to test how far he could throw B.to practice throwing pebbles
C.to avoid picking up the same pebble D.to express his disappointment
4.What message does the story want to tell us?

C.Never judge a person or a thing by appearance. D.Opportunity only visits the ready and watchful mind.
