1、The topic of this unit is “A Taste of English Humor”. As Chinese, almost everyone
knows Zhao Benshan, Huang Hong, Pan Changjiang, Ma Ji and Jiang Kun. Why do Chinese people like them?
Yes, we like them because they are funny and humorous. They usually make people
laugh in different ways. And we do believe that it is humor that makes our life
more interesting. Do you know any English humors? Let’s listen to the tape and
try to know more.

1、Do you find it funny to see someone sliding on a banana skin, bumping into someone
else round a corner, or falling down a hole in the road?

2、Some humour can be cruel but some people seem to enjoy seeing other people’s
bad luck at times.

6、The film is set in California in the middle of the nineteenth century when gold
was discovered and thousands of people rushed there in search of it.

1、Object Complement(宾语补足语)
①I saw the boy playing basketball over there.
②We hear him singing in the next room.
2、Attribute(定语)
①Do you know the boy standing under the tree?
=Do you know the boy who is standing under the tree?
②The boy sitting under the tree is my friend.
=The boy who is sitting under the tree is my friend.
3、Predicative(表语)
①His job is teaching chemistry.
②What he told us seemed surprising.
常用系动词:be,seem,look,feel,sound等。
练习
1、Find the sentences in the reading passage where the –ing form is used as
the object complement.
EXAMPLE:Do you find it funny to see someone sliding on a banana skin?
Now find two others in the text.

2、Choose the suitable verb and put it in the correct form to complete each

3、In pairs have a competition. Make as many sentences as you can from the table.

4 The women going to bed early is very tired and needs rest.
5 The girl eating her dinner can play the piano well.
4、The –ing form can be used as predicative, as in“Their job is‘panning for
gold’.”Can you complete the following sentences using the –ing form?
1 Seeing is believing.
2 His job is looking after the animals.
3 What he likes is playing chess after supper.
4 The news is encouraging.
5 The film is more exciting than any that I’ve ever seen.
