13. Common phrases like “no pains, no gains” give the impression that we ought to be suffering while we study. It’s almost as though the only way to know if we’re putting in enough work is the sense of hardship we bear.
When we haven’t taken the time to come up with another strategy, all we know how to do is shut ourselves in a room with a book. It’s no surprise that we find revision boring and difficult. Just as children learn from playing, we can learn from doing, or at least from study techniques that engage us, rather than make us switch off.
Shutting yourself away can make you learn to hate studying. This leads to a situation where instead of being able to concentrate on your work, you obsess about (唠叨)how unfair it is that you must study. When you feel bitter about your work it’s very difficult to make yourself start, or approach it with enthusiasm. This can be part of a vicious cycle (恶性循环) that traps you into ineffective revision, your poor progress fuelling further bitterness. Just being around other people really helps fight against feelings of loneliness and, thankfully, it’s perfectly possible to work in the company of other people. We just need to learn how to deal with distractions.
It’s not necessary to avoid all company, just idle (懒散的) company. Studying in the same room with someone who is ironing or working out is perfectly possible. People who are bored and looking to be distracted, however, are terrible to work around. They constantly try to keep others in conversation. It’s also a good idea to avoid the company of people engaged in activities that you would rather be doing than studying. Working while sitting next to someone playing video games is much more likely to end with a new high score than a productive few hours of revision. If being around others means working in a noisy environment, a pair of headphones and some background music can block out noises. They also act as a psychological barrier, so that people think twice before interrupting you.
When you’re studying for a big exam, it seems like your whole life is taken up with study. Being in the same room with friends and family can lessen feelings of isolation (孤立). Also connecting with other people makes us happy, so it’s important not to give that up and to make sure that we take the time to socialize.
1. What is the author’s attitude to the saying “no pains, no gains”?
A.Serious.B.Positive C.Negative D.Uncaring.
2. What should you do if you are studying in a noisy environment?
A.Give indication of not wanting to be interrupted.
B.Give up others’ company at once.
C.Think twice before taking any action.
D.Force yourself to be accustomed to the environment.
3. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Ways to deal with distractions.
B.How to choose a perfect place to study.
C.Learning problems students are faced with.
D.How to focus mind on study.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To encourage students to work hard.
B.To introduce effective learning strategies
C.To remind students to balance study and play.
D.To advise students study in the company of others.
文章大意:本文是一篇议论文。
人类一直对时间旅行很感兴趣,从理论上来说,时间旅行是可行的,但时间旅行未必是好事。
作者认为我们最好还是活在当下。
14. If you could travel in time, where would you go? Perhaps you would watch an original performance of a Shakespeare’s play in Elizabethan England? What about hanging out with Laozi in the Spring and Autumn Period? Or maybe you’d voyage far ahead of the present day to see what the future holds.
The possibility of time travel is indeed appealing. Stories exploring the subject have been around for hundreds of years. Perhaps the best known example is the science fiction novel The Time Machine, which was written by H. G. Wells and published in 1895 for the first time. It was adapted into at least two feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term “time machine”, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to a vehicle transporting people into the far future.
But could time travel actually be possible? Some scientists say yes, in theory. They propose using cracks in time and space called “wormholes”, which could be used as shortcuts to other periods. Einstein’s theory of relativity allows time travel in extreme circumstances. And British physicist Stephen Hawking said you could travel into the future with a really fast spaceship—going at nearly the speed of light. Though building such a spaceship would of course be no simple task.
Even if you could travel into the past, there is something called the “grandfather paradox”. It asks what would happen if a time traveller were to go back in time and have his own grandfather killed for some reason, and therefore prevent himself from being born. If the time traveller wasn’t born, how would he travel back in time?
And would you really like to visit the future? In H. G. Wells’ book, the main character travels into distant time where he arrives at a beach and is attacked by giant crabs. He then voyages 30 million years into the future where the only living thing is a black object with tentacles (触角). If that’s what’s in store, maybe we are better just living in the present day after all.
1. The novel The Time Machine mentioned in Paragraph 2 aims to show .
A.people’s interest in time travel
B.the special features of the book
C.the long history of time travel
D.the contribution of H. G. Wells
2. Einstein’s and Hawking’s theories .
A.have similarities in many ways
B.push the invention of the first spaceship
C.have proved wrong by some time travellers
D.suggest the possibility to invent the time machine
3. In Paragraph 4, “grandfather paradox” probably refers to the idea that .
A.the traveller is prevented from meeting his grandfather
B.the traveller goes back in time to seek for his grandfather
C.the grandfather’s death makes the traveller’s birth impossible
D.The reunion of the traveller and his grandfather brings happiness
4. What is probably the author’s attitude towards time travel?
A.Unclear.B.Skeptical.
C.Supportive.D.Unconcerned.
15. Your money or your time?
A friend once invited me to spend a cold winter’s day picking up rubbish in a park. It was a community-service event organized by a charitable organization(慈善组织) she was involved with. I immediately told her I was not interested.
“It just makes no sense,” I explained. “Why would I spend three hours of my time picking up rubbish?” I argued that if the goal was neighborhood beautification, then I would rather donate three-hours’ worth of my labor income. The organization could then hire several people in need of a job. The rubbish gets picked up, we provide jobs, and I do not have to spend three hours in the cold. “Where can I make a donation?”
My friend sighed, said something in a low voice about it seeming like a good way to meet men, and then shuffled off to ask someone else. When we feel inspired to do good, many of us choose to give time instead of money. Given how precious our time is– limited by demands of work, family and friends–setting some of it aside to clean parks or deliver meals seems like a valuable donation. But is this the most efficient way to give?
_____________________ As I explained to my friend, what my time is worth may be far more valuable to most charities than my actual labor. The money could go towards hiring people with limited employment opportunities, or to help cover more pressing needs facing the charity, such as rent or staff salaries. My hours of labor, on the other hand, serve the charity in only one way, and can only be provided by me.
Volunteer labor becomes more valuable if it involves a special skill. For example, if a talented doctor donates a few hours of his time to a free clinic, this may serve the charity better than a $1,000 donation. Unfortunately, I can think of few local charities that would benefit from the unique skills of an economist.
I recently explained this to a professional who regularly donates his time to a local soup kitchen. But he argued that “just throwing money at a cause” is potentially irresponsible and enables disengagement. Donating time may be a greater personal sacrifice, but it also gives him a stronger connection with the cause. He has created a bond not only with the other volunteers, but also with the people he feeds, and the result is an enriching sense of community. He also believes, as a member of the same minority group of many of the people he serves, that he provides them with a positive role model. He recognizes the value in the social interaction volunteering provides.
Of course charities benefit from both kinds of donations. They need some people to just hand over cash, but they also develop successfully by being an important part of the community. Whether it is better to give money or time depends on your goals as a donor. If the objective is simply to provide food for the hungry or to clean a park, then money is more valuable. However, if you hope to also engage with your community–not only with your peers, but also with less fortunate people whom you might not otherwise meet –no amount of money can make up for your time spent.
1. In the first 3 paragraphs, the author uses the case to .
A.describe a scene B.lead in a topic
C.make a comparison D.offer an argument
2. The author believes there are some efficient ways to donate EXCEPT.
A.picking up rubbish in the community
B.offering service in a free clinic as a doctor
C.donating money to deal with the charity rent
D.helping cover the needs of charity staff salaries
3. By “The economist in me is inclined to say no”(Paragraph 5), the author means that he .
A.is willing to serve the charity
B.aims to say no to the economist
C.tends to reject giving time instead of money
D.is longing to share his efficient way to give with his friend
4. In the professional’s opinion (Paragraph 7), donating time is .
A.one-sided B.debatable
C.meaningless D.reasonable
5. Which of the following does the author finally agree with?
A.It is donors’ participation that really matters.
B.Cash or labor is determined by a donor’s aims.
C.Time is much more valuable than one’s actual labor.
D.It is not responsible for donors to just donate money to the charities.

17. Campus visits are a golden opportunity to personally experience your target universities. Are you wondering how to make the most of these visits? 1
Prepare well.
Getting ready for your visit is very important. Contact the universities you are interested in and ask about their visit policies. At some universities, you may need to call two months in advance if you’d like to have an interview. 2 Check if what the school offers matches what you want to study and how you like to learn. This can help you see whether the campus will help make your dreams come true.
3
Avoid feeling rushed (仓促的). Give yourself time to stretch and walk around before you make an official introduction. Find a comfortable spot like a snack bar to observe campus life. Don’t hesitate to interact with students; they can provide valuable insights.
Get more than one opinion.
Much of what is offered by a university during your visit is for your benefit and meant to impress you. 4 If possible, set aside some time to independently explore more about the university. Visit the neighborhoods surrounding the campus and gather first-hand information from current students. Talk to them and ask open-ended questions. For example, how would you describe the learning environment? How is this university helping you achieve your goals? How do you see yourself fitting into the picture of life on that campus? Listening to their stories can help you imagine your life on the campus.

Nearly 790 million people around the world do not get enough to eat, most of 1 live in developing countries.
A group of researchers in California may have found a way 2 (help) feed the hungry people. Stephen Mayfield, a professor at the University of California, studies on algae(藻类). He says, “The world, in fact, is not short of calories. 3 it is short of is proteins(蛋白质) and essential fatty acids(脂肪酸). Algae are 4 (natural) very high in proteins and fatty acids and those are sort of the two things that the world really needs.”
Mayfield and his team have made algae 5 different kinds of food. Not only is the algae food rich in protein and fatty acids, but it also
6 (taste) pretty good.
And growing algae uses 7 (little) land than other kinds of protein. Mayfield’s big idea is that algae farms could one day replace the huge amounts of land 8 (use) by farmers to produce protein from cattle or soybeans.
Mayfield’s team just successfully finished a test in which they grew algae in an outdoor environment. “Algae food 9 (product) are not yet available for sale. But in the future algae may help feed people threatened by 10 (starve),” says Mayfield.。
