Part III Reading Comprehension (40% ) (理解)Directions: There are three reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four suggested
answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best answer to each question. Then put your choice on the Answer Sheet.
Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage: (中) David, my next-door neighbor, has two young kids aged five and seven. One day he was teaching his seven-year-old son Kelly how to push the lawn mower around the yard. As he was teaching him to turn the mower around at the end of the lawn, his wife, Jane, called to him to ask a question. As David turned to answer the question, Kelly pushed the lawn mower right through the flower bed at the edge of the lawn, leaving a two-foot wide path leveled to the ground.
When David turned back around and saw what had happed, he began to lose control. David had spent a lot of time and effort making those flower beds, the envy of the neighborhood. As he began to raise his voice to his son, Jane walked quickly over to him, put her hands on his husband’s shoulder and said, “David, please remember…we’re raising children, not flowers!”
Jane reminded me how important it is as a parent to remember our priorities. Kids and their self-esteem are more important than any physical objects they might break or destroy. The window pane broken by a football, a desk lamp knocked over by a careless child, or a plate dropped in the kitchen is already broken. The flowers are already dead. We must remember not to add the destruction by breaking a child’s spirit and deadening his sense of liveliness.
B/26. What did David teach Kelly to do one day?
A. How to water flowers.
B. How to operate a mower. 如何操作割草机
C. How to clean the yard.
D. How to take care of the lawn.
C/27. What did Jane mean by saying “we’re raising children, not flowers”?
A. We don’t have enough time to raise flowers.
B. Children are of greater importance than flowers.
C. We like flowers better than children.相对孩子我们更偏爱花儿了。

D. Flowers are raised for children.
B/28. What should be considered as priorities优先权by parents?
A. Correcting children’s bad behaviors.
B. Always forgiving children for their mistakes.原谅孩子的错误
C. Asking children not to break physical objects.
D. Bearing children’s self-esteem in mind.
B/29. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Children nowadays are very careless.
B. It’s no use crying over spilt milk. 为打翻的牛奶哭泣是无用的
C. Destruction of physical objects means nothing.
D. Not every child has sense of liveliness.
A/30. Which of the following words can be used to best describe the author’s attitude towards Jane?
A. Critical. 批评的
B. Indifferent.
C. Approving.
D. Negative.
Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage: (中)In every school there is a “top” crowd that sets the pace, while the others follow their example. Let’s say the top crowd decides that it is smart to wear bright red sweaters. Pretty soon everybody is wearing bright red sweaters. There is nothing wrong with that, except the fact that for some people bright red is rather unsuitable. The situation can even become dangerous, if the top crowd decides that it is smart to drink or to drive cars at seventy miles an hour. Then the people who follow the example are endangering their very lives. They are like sheep being led to the slaughter.
Now, it is likely that you have come across situations like these more than once in your life. In fact, it is likely that at one time or another you probably did something you knew to be wrong. You may have excused yourself by saying, “Gee, the crowd does it.” Well, let the crowd do it, don’t do it yourself. Learn to say “No!” Develop your own standards and your own judgments. If you know the crowd is planning something of which you disapprove, have the courage to bow out gracefully. You will have the satisfaction of standing on your own two feet.

Questions 41 to 45 are based on the following passage: (中)Betty and Harold have been married for years. What in the world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?
Betty shrugs. She says they are friends.
“Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men.
“More than two-thirds of single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife/husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress. “Most women,” says Rubin, “identified at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”
“In general,” writers Rubin in her new book, “women’s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.” For the most part, Rubin says, interactions between men are emotionally
controlled—a good fit wit h the social requirements of “manly behavior.”
“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes, “the two share little about their innermost feelings. Whereas a woman’s closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing mar riage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.”

Part V Writing ( 15%)
(Model Essay)
Dear Fang,
I understand that you are in a dilemma. Although so many graduates are eager to set feet on their work-life road, there are still some who prefer to start their new life after gaining another degree to make better preparation for entering society. In my opinion, the latter are more admirable. You are good at all your courses these years, so if you do like to spend another two or three years on campus, you should stick to it. In today's society, the achievement and status you can get and the devotion you can make are no doubt in proportion to your educational background and degrees, coupled with the efforts you put in them. If you want to stride to your destinations more smoothly and easily, why not head for the further study courageously? Whichever you choose, I firmly believe your industry will ensure your success. After all, it is you who have the finally say on the final choice. Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,。
