Peter Owen was born in Wales in 1771. At the age of ten he went to work. H is employer had a large private library so Owen was able to educate himself. He read a lot in his spare time and at nineteen he was given the job of superintendent(监工) at a Manchester cotton mill. He was so successful there that he persuaded his employer to buy the New Lanark mill in Scotland.
When he arrived at New Lanark it was a dirty little town with a population of 2,000 people. Nobody paid any attention to the workers' houses or their children's education. The conditions in the factories were very bad. There was a lot of crime (犯罪)and the men spent most of their wages (工资)on alcoholic drinks.
Owen improved the houses. He encouraged people to be clean and save money. He opened a shop and sold the workers cheap, well-made goods to help them. He limited the sale of alcoholic drinks. Above all, he fixed his mind on the children's education. In 1816 he opened the first free primary school in Britain.
People came from all over the country to visit Owen's factory. They saw that the workers were healthier and more efficient than in other towns. Their children were better fed and better educated. Owen tried the same experiment in the United States. He bought some land there in 1825, but the community was too far away. He could not keep it under control and lost most of his money.
Owen never stopped fighting for his idea. Above all he believed that people are not born good or bad. He was a practical man and his ideas were practical. "If you give people good working conditions," he thought, "they will work well and, the most important thing of all, if you give them the chance to learn, they will be better people."

A. he lost all his money
B. he did not buy enough land
C. people who visited it were not impressed
D. it was too far away for him to organize it properly
4. We may infer form the passage that no children in Britain could enjoy free education until
____.

I recently read a book named Silent Spring written by Rachel Carson. In this book, she warned that some chemicals used in pesticides (杀虫剂) were polluting the air, the water, the eart h, and all creatures on earth. After reading the book, I felt deeply concerned. So you may ask, “Are pesticides really dangerous to use?” My answer is yes. And here are my reasons. Do harm to life in water
Pesticides do not stay in one place. Their particles (颗粒) fly through the air when they are used, sinking into the soil in the end. The chemicals are then carried away by runoff water, often into rivers and oceans, where they can kill water plants. In the US, for example, pesticides flow into the Mississippi River every year. They then travel to the Gulf Coast, where the rest chemicals kill off yards of wetlands. According to experts, pl ants in rivers and oceans provide 80 percent of the oxygen content. When pesticides harm these plants, life in rivers and oceans will be harmed as a result.
_____________________
Pesticides not only go into water sources, causing problems there, but they also cause problems on land. When species on land often contact these chemicals, the result can be those animals’ lowered weight, lowered power to fight diseases, loss of att ention, and even death.
Do harm to humans
Humans are not immune (免疫的) to the effects that wildlife experiences. Pesticides may become part of the food eaten by humans. They remain and increase gradually in our bodies. Some chemicals in pesticides can cause cancer. They may also harm skin and lungs. Recent studies have shown that pesticides can affect human brainwave activity and cause loss of memory and inability to concentrate.
Now we can conclude that pesticides are really dangerous to use. They should be replaced for the sake of nature and our health.
5. When reading the book Silent Spring, the writer was extremely _______.
A. interested
B. bored
C. inspired
D. worr ied
6. . What would be the best subtitle for Paragraph 3?
A. Do harm to plants in water
B. Do harm to the environment
C. Do harm to wildlife on land
D. Do harm to food for wildlife
7. Recent studies show that pesticides can lead to ______.
A. cancer in humans
B. poor memory in humans
C. decrease in humans’ weight
D. damage to humans’ skin and lungs
8. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To persuade us not to use pesticides.
B. To encourage us to read Silent Spring.
C. To explain why we shouldn’t use pesticides.
D. To prove that pesticides are dangerous to use.

When I began planning to move to Auckland to study, my mother was a little worried about the uncertainty of living in a place that was so different from India, where we lived. She worried particularly about the lack of jobs and cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism(种族主义).
Despite these concerns, I came to New Zealand in July 2009.I found the place and the people very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a job to supply my living expenses.
Determined to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door for a job. However, I received little or no response.
One afternoon, I walked into a building to ask if there were any job opportunities. The people there were very surprised and advised me not to continue my job search in that manner. As I was about to leave, a clerk in the building, who had been listening to what others had said, approached me and asked me to wait outside. Fifteen minutes later, he returned, and asked me what my plans were and encouraged me to stay confident. Then he offered to take me to his friend’s company, Royal Oak, to search for a job. The following day, I received a call from a store in Royal Oak offering me a job.
It seems that the world always gives back to you when you need it. And this time, it was
a complete stranger who turned out to be a real blessing.
9. What wasn’t the author’s mother worried about?
A. There might be cultural differences.
B. People might look down on the author.
C. The author couldn’t s peak the local language.
D. It might be difficult for the author to find a job.
10. After staying in New Zealand for a short time, the author .
A. decided to go back to his own country.
B. felt the local people were not very friendly.
C. wanted to get a job that needed practical skills.
D. had to find a job to cover his living expenses.
11. When the author went into a building to look for a job, .
A. a clerk gave him encouragement and advice.
B. he was confident that he would find a good one.
C. he found many college students like him already there.
D. a clerk recommended him to the company he worked for.

You wake up in the morning, the day is beautiful and the plans for the day are what you have been looking forward to for a long time. Then the te lephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing(令人沮丧的)tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to. You are still in a wonderful mood? Impossible!
Communicating with negative (消极)people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.
Life brings ups and downs, but some people, are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad. No wonder they can hardly win others' pity or respect.
When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首)of a negative person is put in you,you feel the heavy feeling that, all in all, brings you down.
Sometimes we have no choice but t o communicate with negative people. This could be a coworker,or relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible. Sometimes it feels good to let outyour anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to l ower you to that same negative level and they won't feel ashamed of themselves about that.
Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to (附着)you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness. Life is too short to feel negative. Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.
12.The purpose of the first paragraph is to__________.
A.make a comparison B.offer an evidence
C.introduce a topic D.describe a daily scene
13.How can negative people have effect on us?
A.By influencing our emotion. B.By telling us the nature of life.
C.By changing our way of thinking. D.By comparing their attitude to life with ours.
14.Some negative people base their happiness on__________.
A.other people's pity for them B.making other people unhappy
C.building up a positive attitude D.other people's respect for them
15.According to the passage,to reduce negative people's influence on us,we are advised__________.
A.to change negative people's attitude to life
B.to show our dissatisfaction to negative people
C.to make negative people feel ashamed of themselves
D.to communicate with negative people as little as possible
