A mile into her walk, she found a female mute swan (疣鼻天鹅) near the water’s edge. Cordova-Rojas, 30, who had worked at the Wild Bird Fund rehabilitation centre in Manhattan, knew that mute swans can be angry and ready to attack. But as she approached this one, it didn’t move. She was certain that the bird needed medical attention. Cordova-Rojas put her jacket over the bird’s head to keep it calm, carefully picked it up, and held it in her arms. And then a thought struck her: What do I do now?Her best hope was the rehab (康复) centre, but that was across the East River and clear on the other side of town. How was she going to transport a 17-pound swan on her bike all that way? Luckily, some strangers driving by offered her, her bike, and the swan a lift to a nearby subway station. On the subway, no one seemed particularly frightened by the feathered passenger. One guy, says Cordova-Rojas, was “sitting right in front of me on his phone. I don’t know if he noticed there was a swan in front of him.”Cordova-Rojas called the rehab centre on the road, and Tristan Higgin-botham, an animal-care manager, picked her up at the subway station and drove the bird, the bike, and the rescuer to the centre. There, staff members determined that the swan might have lead poisoning (中毒), caused by taking weights used on fishing lines. The staff got the swan back up on her feet. Sadly, even with all that care, the swan got a serious infection (感染). Two months after Cordova-Rojas came to her rescue, she passed away. It’s a disappointing ending, but the real story is just how far some people are willing to go to save a swan in the big city-literally. In all, Cordova-Rojas travelled two hours by foot, car, and subway while honking (按喇叭) her bike. Says Higgin-botham, “That’s the perfect summary of who she is,”4.Why did Cordova-Rojas put her jacket over the bird’s head?A.To catch the swan.B.To calm the swan down.C.To keep the swan warm.D.To block the swan’s sight.5.How did Cordova-Rojas get to the subway station with the swan?A.She rode her bike.B.She got there on foot.C.She took a bus.D.She was offered a lift.6.What was wrong with the swan?A.She had lead poisoning.B.She was injured on her feet.C.She was trapped by a fishing net.D.She nearly died from hunger. 7.What’s the best title for the text?A.How to Protect Birds B.Strangers Kind ActionC.Honk If You Love Birds D.The Last Song of the SwanA city is rising from the waters of the Indian Ocean. More people are working harder than ever before in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices. shops. and factories are discovering the great efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunch rooms. In almost all lines of work emphasis now falls on ever increasing output. Thus the "typical" Frenchman produces more, earns more, and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart (对应的事物 ) of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comfort and ease of life . What he loses to some degree is his sense of personal uniqueness. or individuality. Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of the technological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university students. They are concerned with the future. and they fear that France is threatened by the achievements of this competitive culture. At times, they have reacted against the trend with considerable violence. In spite of the critics, however. countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront of the modern economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and pleasures than that of the past They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.5. Researchers from Australia say that the presence of the particles(微粒) in an eucalyptus tree's leaves indicates that deposits(矿藏) are buried many meters below. They believe that the discovery offers a new way to locate the valuable metal in difficult-to-reach locations.Dr. Mel Lintern from Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSTRO) said. "We've found a lot of the easy deposits in Australia in this way. Now we are trying to find the more difficult ones that are buried tens of meters below. And the trees are'providing us with a method to be able to do this."Using the Australian synchrotron - a vast machine that uses X-rays to explore matters in remarkable detail-they found gold in the leaves. twigs and barks of some trees. The amount of the precious metal in an eucalyptus tree's leaves were tiny. "We need 500 eucalyptus trees. Growing over a gold deposit to have enough gold in the trees themselves to make a gold ring," said Dr. Lintern. However, the presence of the particles pointed to richer deposits buried more than 30m below.Dr. Lintern said, "We believe that the trees are acting like a pump. They are bringing life-giving water from their roots, and in so doing. they are taking smaller dissolved gold particles up into the leaves."Currently, the metal is found in outcrops(地面岩层). where the ore(矿石) appears at the surface, or it is detected through exploratory drilling. But the researchers said that analyzing plants could offer a better and simpler method to detect untapped gold deposits. Dr. Lintern said. "Not only do we believe it is a way of saving the explorationcost, because exploring for these deposits can be quite expensive, it also minimizes the damage to the environment because we are taking a very small sample from the trees themselves. as well as the leaves and twigs on the ground. The plant-analyzing method is certain to work."9. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?A. A new ways to locate metal deposits is found.B. Previous technology has tended to replace unskilled tasks, but the present AI technology can perform some complex tasks, such as designing posters and writing poems. The horror is that an advanced AI causes harm to a large degree such as making poisons or persuading humans to start attacks. Researchers worry that fixture AIs may go against their human creators. Such worries should not be ignored. But all involve a huge amount of guesswork, and a jump from today’s technology. The EU is taking a tougher line, whose law classifies(分类) different uses of AI by the degree of risk. But it is believed that an even sricter approach is needed. Governments should treat AI like medicines, with strict testing and pre-approval before going public. China is doing some of this, requiring companies to go through a safety review before going public. What to do? Tighter rules over time may be needed. Intergovernmental agreements, similar to those that govern nuclear weapons(核武器), may also seem appropriate. To keep the risk below a safe level, governments could form a body that could study AI safety andethics(伦理)一areas where companies are unwilling to invest as much as society might wish. The powerful technology presents new risks, but also offers extraordinary opportunities .Balancing the two means walking carefully. A careful approach today can provide the foundations on which farther rules can be added in future. But the time to start building those foundations is now.12、Why do we fear artificial intelligence currently?A. It gels surprisingly powerful.B. It goes against human beings.C. To stress the importance of AI safety.D. To prove the need of tighter rules for AI.15、What might be the best title for the passage?A. Who to Stop AIB. What to Expect of AIC. When to Act Against AID. He probably never imagined the enemies might be tourists one day. But these days, the old castle has been polished clean, and hundreds of multicolored Pullman buses snake up the winding roads to its grounds, now filled with T-shirt stands, Coca-Cola signs and a 200-car parking lot. All this thanks to the fact that UNESCO has designated (认定) it a World Heritage Site in 1996.Officially, UNESCO honors places that exemplify an area’s ancestry, with the purpose of ensuring they are preserved. Unofficially, this designation is a kind of fairy dust that often turns little-known cultural sites into overnight tourist sensations. This is both a gift and a cuss. Lisa Mastny, senior adviser to the World Watch Institute, says tourism is double-edged for places considered of “outstanding value to humanity. It offers many poor communities the chance to obtain financial rewards, but also threatens the very resources —human and natural—upon which the industry is ultimately built”.There is growing awareness that assigning UNESCO designation is worthless — or worse, harmful — without some kind of follow-up preservation program. “In the early days there wasn’t much attention given to what would happen once these site s became World Heritage. But that’s changing slowly,” says Joseph King, director of the sites unit at the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). In Africa, a 12-year training program is currently underway to teach locals not only how to preserve their immovable cultural heritage, but how to use it for economic development. In Eastern Europe, where tourism is a relatively new thing, cities are looking for help in figuring out where to draw the line between preservinghistorical centers and promoting urban development.4.What can we learn about Castel del Monte?A.It was built to enjoy the view.B.It has become a hot tourist spot.C.It has to make way for a shopping mall.D.It failed to win UNESCO designation in 1996.5.Which word is closest in meaning to the underlined word “cuss” in paragraph 2?A.Solution.B.Promise.C.Drawback.D.Chance.6.How does the author support King’s words in the last paragraph?A.By quoting experts.B.By analyzing cause and effect.C.By giving examples.D.By making comparisons.7.What is the best title for the text?A.Is UNESCO Helpful in Driving Global Tourism?B.How Can a Place Be Included in the UNESCO List?C.Why Is It Important to Market World Heritage Site Tours?D.Does Identifying World Heritage Sites Do More Harm Than Good?CFor any spaceman hoping to survive on the surface of the moon, growing crops will be important. Now, scientists have taken “one small step” towards growing plants on the lunar surface, after showing it’s possible to grow thale cress, a small flowering plant, in the lunar soil. The findings raise hopes that plants could be grown on the moon during future space missions(任务), and even enable mankind to set up a lunar settlement. “For future, longer space missions, we may use the moon as a launching platform(平台),” explained Professor Rob Ferl. “It makes sense that we would want to use the soil that’s already there to grow plants.” Until now, scientists have not grown plants in the soil. “So, what happens when you grow plants in the lunar soil? What would plants do in a lunar greenhouse? Could we have lunar farmers?” Professor Ferl questioned. To answer these questions, researchers from Florida set out to plant thale cress seeds in the lunar soil, add water, nutrients and light, and see what happened. The researchers chose to use thale cress because its genetic code(基因序列)has already been fully mapped. For comparison, the researchers also planted seeds in a range of soils, including those that are similar to the Martian soil. To their delight, the researchers found that nearly all of the seeds grew. However, they did observe differences between the plants grown in the lunar soil and those grown in the control soils. Some of the plants grown in the lunar soil were smaller, while others grew more slowly or weremore varied in size.Growing plants in the lunar soil may also change the moon itself, according to Dr. Stephen Elardo. “The moon is a very, very dry place,” he said. How will minerals in the lunar soil respond to having a plant grown in them, with the added water and nutrients? Will adding water make the minerals friendlier to plants? The researchers hope to answer these questions in follow-up studies.8.What’s the second paragraph mainly about?A.The plants grown in the lunar soil.B.The significance of the findings.C.The missions of future space exploration.D.The hope for setting up a lunar settlement.9.Why did researchers use thale cress in the experiment?A.Its genes are suitable for the lunar soil.B.People have a good knowledge of its genes.C.It has been tested with the lunar soil before.D.It has a long evolutionary history.10.What did researchers find about the plants grown in the lunar soil?A.They absorbed few minerals.B.They grew slowly in the dark.C.They didn’t grow well enough.D.They needed more water to grow bigger.11.What is the best title for the text?A.Preparing for Farming on the MoonB.Conducting a Study on the Lunar SoilC.Growing Plants in the Lunar SoilD.Making the Lunar Soil Friendlier to PlantsDIt’s said that about one third of the world’s citizens live in substandard housing. But researchers have created free plans now available online for building houses using pre-made parts that fit together perfectly, which could help solve this housing problem. The world population is expected to grow to more than 8 billion by 2030, and the housing situation in city isalready a huge problem. Building new homes in the traditional way still takes weeks or months. In a London neighborhood, a group of volunteers are constructing a house made of pre-made plywood panels (预制胶合板面板) and parts, the so-called WikiHouse. All parts were precisely cut in a Computer Numerical Control, or CNC machine, following a free plan downloaded from the Internet.Founder of the UK-based on WikiHouse Foundation, architectural designer Alastair Parvin, said this could be the solution for affordable housing. WikiHouse is essentially a series of technologies we’re developing aimed at simplifying the process of making really sustainable high-performance houses to a point where almost anyone can do it.Precise cutting allows a perfect fit for all parts, which speeds up the process of assembly (装配). No special tools are required. The WikiHouse was built in 10 days for exhibition purposes. Then, it was taken apart and reassembled elsewhere for permanent use.“Open-source (开源)software is now really established; it drives a lot of the software we use,” Parvin said. “What's happening now is that that's coming into the world of physical things, so we're effectively building a kind of Wikipedia for physical material.”Parvin said the project is in its early stages, with limited availability. But he said he expects it to grow as more people start showing interest in houses whose assembly requires no special skills.12.What does the author think of the housing situation in urban centers?A.Serious.B.Acceptable.C.Good.D.Common.13.Why is Alastair Parvin developing Wiki- House?A.Because it looks more beautiful.B.Because it saves the trouble of designing.C.Because workers are fond of the work.D.Because it makes the process of making houses simple.14.Which is one of the advantages of the WikiHouse?A.It is solid.B.It takes up little room.C.It saves time.D.It is environmentally friendly.15.Judging from the last two paragraphs, we know_.A.Parvin is cautious about using open-source softwareB.Parvin thinks WikiHouse technology is matureC.Parvin is optimistic about the future of WikiHouseD.Parvin is trying his best to make Wiki-House cheaper第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Any decision could be the turning point of your life.I made an important decision when I was in Junior 3. Before I made that decision I was one of the boys who tried too hard to act as an adult. I didn't know that only kids want toshow themselves as adults. I didn't listen to my parents and teachers, and my grades became poor. Then came the high school entrance exam.At the turning point of my life, my mom wanted to have a conversation with me. I wanted to turn it down but when I looked at her eyes, I felt I couldn't refuse. Instead of asking me to study hard, to my surprise, mom just asked what I wanted to do in the future. Without thinking too much, I just said I would like to study hard.Mom smiled and asked again, "I asked: what do you WANT to do?" I never seriously thought about the question. So, I kept silent."Whether you want to go on studying or enter the society," she went on, "it is yourown decision. Your life ought to be decided by you, not by anyone else, including me."
