Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it, while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?
To grow plants needs several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also need water. In very dry parts of the Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That’s why dry deserts everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.
Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks of the stones to grow in.
Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.
What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won’t. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each day. Many of them will die because the sand on the beach has almost no food for plants.

Where in the world can you take an hour’s train ride, and pass a forest, a London street, a scene from the Wild West(西大荒), and a burning building that never burns down? Th ere’s only one place, and that’s Hollywood, in California. The scenes you see from the tourist train are film sets(布景)in the Universal Studios, one of the oldest and largest movie companies(公司)in the U.S.A.
A visit to Universal Studios brings back memories of great days of Hollywood, the films and the stars. But they are only memories. Hollywood isn’t quite the same as it used to be. Costs have gone up and confidence has gone down. Movie-makers are afraid to spend their money on expensive new ideas. Instead, they repeat old ones. The film industry is changing fast. Teenagers still go out to the movies. The theatre is a good place to meet friends away from home. But older people mostly stay home to watch series, like Dynasty, which have become as important to Hollywood as expensive movies. These “soap opera,” as they are called, show rich, powerful families living in beautiful homes and wearing beautiful clothes. But the actors and actresses are nearly all middle-aged, like many of the people who watch them. Though it is soap operas the are keeping the film-makers of Hollywood in Business,
big films are still being made in America. But more and more of them are made outside Hollywood. New York is the most important new center, but there are many others as well. Movie-makers have realized that they don’t need Hollywood any more. They can use modern cameras and real houses instead of expensively made copies in a studio. Other states, especially Florida and Texas, are working hard to take the film business away from California. They are offering better working conditions and lower cost.
But Hollywood is fighting back. The state of California is trying hard to keep its best-known industry.

Dear Editor,
I’m confused these days. We are taught at home and at school that violence(暴力)is bad. For example, last week, my friend and I were playing at the beach. We found a really beautiful shell. My friend picked it up, but I saw it first, and I said it was mine. He said, no, it was his. I really wanted the shell, and I even thought about hitting him, that’s how angry I was.
Now should that be right? No! I shouldn’t use violence. I should talk with my friend instead, and solve that. My parents and teachers often tell me that using violence is the least civilized(文明)way to solve problems.
So, if adults have a disagreement, and if they use violence toward each other in order to win, is it all right? No!
Now, I’m confused. When two countries disagree, they often use violence. They fight a war. Using violence is not okey at home, at school, or in your country but okey
between two countries, why?
A war is extreme violence. So not only soldiers but citizens(公民),including small children and babies have been killed and injured because of wars.
Adults say they are fighting wars in order to solve problems and make peace. But can you really “make peace” by using violence and killing so many pe ople?
I don’t think that bombs and missiles(炸弹和导弹)can reach people’s hearts and change them. Bombs and missiles can’t create love and caring and that’s what we need in the world. Why can’t they use their wisdom(智慧)and talk it over?
51.What happened to Joshua and his friend last week at the beach?
A.They had a fight. B.Joshua hit his friend
C.They had a class about violence D.They found a beautiful shell. 52.How should we solve problems according to this letter?
A.We should argue about the problems.
B.We should study at school
C.We should use our wisdom and talk them over
D.We should use violence.
53.Which opinion is mentioned in the letter?
A.Violence can solve the problems. B.We should fight wars.
C.A war is extreme violence. D.Bombs and missiles can reach people’s hearts.
54.What does the underlined sentence “Bombs and missiles can’t create love and caring, and that’s what we need in the world.” mean?
A.We need to use violence to solve problems.
B.What we need are bombs and missiles.
C.We need bombs and missiles to create love and caring.
D.What we need in the world is love and caring
55.—What’s the letter about?
—It’s about ________.
A.Joshua’s thoughts about wars B.Joshua’s story
C.hate and love D.arguments
