Believe me, I get it – I used to be one of those kids who would much rather be inside playing video games than going outside to run around. These days, my favorite activities are playing soccer, swimming, and riding my bike. Soccer is an awesome full-body workout – I get to run around the whole game, building up my endurance and speed. Plus, it's just so fun trying to score goals and celebrating with my teammates. Swimming is my favorite way to exercise without it feeling like exercise. I love being in the water and challenging myself to swim longer distances. And bike riding is one of the best ways to explore our neighborhood while getting exercise.
But those are just my favorite activities – the possibilities for being physically active are endless! Maybe you're more into basketball, gymnastics, dance, martial arts, or skiing. Being Healthy and Fit is Fun!
Hi everyone! My name is Jamie and I'm 10 years old. Today I want to talk to you about why it's really important and fun to be physically fit and healthy.
First of all, what does it mean to be physically fit? It means having a body that is strong, energetic, and can do all sorts of cool things like run fast, jump high, and play sports for a long time without getting tired. Being fit is awesome because it allows you to have adventures, be active, and just feel great!
The opposite of being fit is being out of shape. When you're out of shape, simple things like walking up stairs or running to catch a ball can make you out of breath and tired quickly. No fun! Being unfit also makes it harder to concentrate in school and can lead to getting sick more often. Not ideal!
So how do we get fit and stay fit? It's actually really easy - just by moving our bodies regularly through exercise and eating
good nutritious foods. The more you exercise, the more your muscles, heart, and lungs get stronger. And the healthier foods you eat, the more energy you'll have.
For exercise, anything that gets your body moving around counts - playing sports, running around at recess, riding your bike, swimming, dancing, you name it! Experts recommend getting at least 60 minutes of exercise every day. That might sound like a lot, but it can be broken up into smaller chunks throughout the day.
My favorite ways to exercise are playing soccer and basketball after school. I also really enjoy going for bike rides and hikes with my family on the weekends. Sometimes we'll put on some music and dance around the living room together - my little brother is hilarious when he dances! Getting exercise doesn't have to be boring, there are so many fun ways to move.
In addition to being active, we also need to fuel our bodies with good healthy foods. That means eating a balanced diet with lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. My parents always make sure there are carrot sticks, apple slices, or other fresh snacks in the fridge for me to grab. For meals, some of my favorites are whole wheat pasta with tomato
sauce, grilled chicken with a side of broccoli, and fish with brown rice and peas.
I try to limit foods like chips, cookies, candy, and soda since those have a lot of sugar and unhealthy fats that can make you feel sluggish. That said, I definitely still enjoy a treat here and there - everything in moderation! My mom packs me a healthy lunch for school, but I get a small dessert if I eat all my fruits and veggies.
Another awesome thing about being fit is that it gives you more energy to learn, play, and be your best self. I find it much easier to pay attention during my classes after getting exercise. Recess and gym class are the times when I get to burn off energy, so by the time I'm back at my desk, I'm ready to focus.
Being active also helps me sleep really well at night, which is so important for growing kids like us. After a long day at school and an evening soccer practice, I'm always knocked out by bedtime! Getting enough quality sleep is key for having the energy to take on a new day.
In addition to feeling good physically, exercise simply puts me in a better mood mentally too. Whenever I'm feeling stressed, anxious, or upset about something, going for a brisk walk or kicking a soccer ball around always makes me feel calmer and
