(Text 1)
M:Where are we now? I can't tell what road this is.
W:We're heading for the US, but we're still in Canada. And we're quite a long distance from Mexico.
(Text 2)
W:What a fine day! Shall we go hiking this early spring morning?
M:Mom won't let us. We have to take care of little Jenny after we finish our homework.
(Text 3)
W:Dad, I want to be a nurse when I grow up.
M:A nurse? Your aunt has been a nurse for 20 years and she loves it. When your grandma wasn't well, she knew how to take care of her.
(Text 4)
W:I need to return these books today. Do you want to come with me?
M:No. The downtown library doesn't open on Sundays. I'd rather go tomorrow so I can check some new books for myself.
(Text 5)
W:That is a beautiful painting, Jerry! Where did you buy it?
M:Actually, I made it. I've been taking art classes for the past year.
W:Really? That's amazing! I had no idea you were so talented. This looks like it was painted by a professional.
(Text 6)
M:Check out my pet! He is a German shepherd.
W:Aw! He's so cute! What's his name?
M:I named him Luke after my favorite movie character, Luke Skywalker.
W:Great name! I am surprised you didn't name him Harry after your favorite book character.
M:He's really fast, and that's why I named him Luke. If I had an older dog, I would name him Yoda.
W:How old is he?
M:Only four months old.
(Text 7)
W:Bye! Have a nice night. You won't play loud music, will you? You know I don't like parties in my house.
M:Oh no, Mrs. White! Only Mozart, and maybe Vivaldi.
W:And of course no alcoholic drinks either!
M:No, certainly not. Only CocaCola.
W:Good, well, I won't be back tonight. I'm staying with my cousin. He's moving to Japan this Sunday. Goodbye, boys!
M:See you in the morning, Mrs. White!
W:By the way, everybody must go home at 11 o'clock.
M:Oh, all right, bye.
(Text 8)
W:Professor, could you give me some suggestions about how to introduce myself before giving a speech?
M:OK. First, greet the audience and then state your name. As you say hello and give your name, remember to speak clearly and confidently.
W:Should I speak as loudly as possible?
M:Not exactly. It depends on the environment and the audience. You just need to make sure that your voice is loud enough to enable everyone to hear you.
W:Thanks. And next?
M:Share some relevant information about yourself. The sort of information you share will depend on the audience and what you'll be talking about.
W:I understand.
M:And then, before you start the speech, thank your audience for being there.
W:Thank you very much. I have learned a lot from you.
(Text 9)
W:May I help you?
M:Yes, madam. I'd like to buy some flowers.
W:Do you want to give them to your girlfriend?
M:No, to my wife. God knows that ladies like flowers.
W:Today is Valentine's Day. That must be why you want them. Just one day of the year.
M:Not exactly. I get them for her birthday, and for all kinds of weird anniversaries.
W:But not on April Fool's Day, right?
M:Ha ha, right. Oh, and by the way, I want some more for my mother. Tomorrow is her birthday.
W:How about these? Purple seems popular with mothers.
M:Not with mine. Do you have any other color?
W:How about blue or these green ones? They are fresh and bright.
M:All right! I will take these green ones and go to the supermarket for some chocolate.
W:There is one just across from the bookstore. Here you are! Please come again.
M:Thanks! Bye!
(Text 10)
W:Have you all heard about the White House? Today we're going to talk about the building that symbolizes the USA. Mr. Green, please.
M:The White House is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. You can't say you've been to Washington D. C. if you haven't seen the White House. Not every American president lives there. Though the Executive Mansion was begun in 1792 under the direction of George Washington, the structure was not completed until 1800, so ironically Washington never called it home. The White House is open to the public on weekdays from 10 am until noon. The building was torched by British troops in 1814, during the War of 1812, and the structural damage caused by the fire was
repaired, but the sandstone walls outside were still black from the fire. The walls were then painted white, giving birth to the name the building now goes by. An act of Congress made it the official name in 1920. Every President has left his mark upon the White House, with Thomas Jefferson adding grass to the east and west wings, Andrew Jackson installing running water, and Harry Truman adding a porch. Bill Clinton's addition to the White House was an indoor track.

Imagine looking for your lost dog. You step into a cave. But instead of the dog, you find beautiful cave paintings. You see paintings of horses, deer, and bison that were drawn in black, brown, red and yellow. Your first question would probably be “Who did this?”
This is what happened to four French boys in 1940. They found the Lascaux caves. The paintings the boys discovered in those caves are about 17,000 years old. They were drawn by the ancient people called CroMagnons.
CroMagnons looked much like people of today. They used tools, such as fishing nets. But their art was extremely good. The main cave at Lascaux is called Great Hall of Bulls, which has a picture of bulls and horses in many colours. The largest animal is 18 feet long. There are smaller animals, such as bison, stags and a bear. There is also a strange spotted twohorned (两只角的) animal.
To the left of the main cave are the most famous paintings that are the drawings of animals in many different colours. One painting is called Little Horses. On the ceiling are horses and cows. The most unusual sight may be in the Shaft of the Dead Man where there is a rhinoceros, a carefully drawn dead man, an injured bison and a bird.
Why did CroMagnon artists do these beautiful drawings on cave walls? Did the drawings call upon some magic power? Did the CroMagno n people hope that the drawings would bring good luck? There is one thing the paintings seem to tell us. The CroMagnons were interested in the world. They looked at beauty and they understood it.

It is no wonder the village is the coldest permanently inhabited (有人居住的) settlement in the world with the average temperature for January standing at -50℃. Known as the “Pole of Cold”, the coldest ever temperature recorded in Oymyakon was -71.2℃. This is the lowest recorded temperature for any permanently inhabited location on Earth and the lowest temperature recorded in the Northern Hemisphere. Surprisingly, Oymyakon actually means “nonfreezing water” due to a nearby hot spring.
Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer meat and horse meat. A single shop provides the town's bare necessities and the locals work as reindeerbreeders, hunters and icefisherman. Doctors say the reason the locals don't suffer from malnutrition (营养失调) is that their animals' milk contains a lot of
micronutrients.
Unsurprisingly, locals are accustomed to the weather and unlike in other countries — where heavy snow brings everything grinding_to_a_halt,_Oymyakon's school only shuts if temperatures fall below -52℃.
There are few modern conveniences in the village — with many buildings still having outdoor toilets — and most people still burn coal and wood for heat. When coal deliveries are irregular, the power station starts burning wood. If the power stops, the town shuts down in about five hours, and the pipes freeze and crack.
Daily problems that come with living in Oymyakon include pen ink freezing, glasses freezing to people's faces and batteries losing power. Locals are said to cave their cars running all day for fear of not being able to restart them. Even if there was coverage for mobile phone reception, the phones themselves would not work in such cold conditions.
Another problem caused by the frozen temperatures is burying dead bodies, which can take anything up to three days. The earth must first have melted sufficiently in order to dig it, so a bonfire is lit for a couple of hours. Hot coals are then pushed to the side and a hole, several inches deep, is dug. The process is repeated for several days until the hole is deep enough to bury the coffin.

Here are three dream trips every traveler should experience:
See the Northern Lights
There is no doubt that it is the greatest light show on Earth. But before you get lost in the beauty of the Northern Lights, it's worth remembering there are some pretty impressive forces at work behind the scenes.
Caused by collisions (碰撞事故) between gaseous particles in the Earth's atmosphere, the Northern Lights commonly appear during the winter months in northern countries like Canada, Finland, Alaska, Greenland, Norway, Sweden and the place that seems to be on everyone's travel wish list right now, Iceland. That includes Akureyri, which topped Lonely Planet's“10 Best Places in Europe” list in June. Less than 100 kilometres from the Arctic Circle, it's Iceland's secondlargest city and a best spot to watch the Northern Lights dance through the sky.
Sleep in an overwater bungalow (平房)
The Four Seasons Resorts Bora Bora has 100 overwater
bungalows. Nothing says “my vacation is way more
wonderful than yours” quite like a photo taken from the
edge of your overwater bungalow — particularly when
it's in Bora Bora, according to TripAdvisor's users.
The Four Seasons Resorts Bora Bora is consistently rated as one of the world's
best overwater bungalow resorts. Not hard to see why. It's made up of 100 overwater bungalows with traditional teak (柚木) wood furnishings and roofs covered with pandanus (露兜树) leaves.
Admire the sunset over Santorini

But the island's sunsets, which rank_with some of the best in the world, are just deserving of travelers' attention. There are more than 1.5 million over85s in the UK currently. By 2030 the number will have doubled and by 2050 it will top 5 million, according to forecasts.
As a House of Lords committee report has suggested, the longer life could cause a series of “crises” in the public service —not only in terms of health and social care, but for pensions, housing and employment.
It is commonly believed that old age means an individual becomes a burden. That is understandable. Research suggests that while people are living longer, they are not automa tically living so long with good health. Today most over85s have between three and six longterm conditions, including everything from heart disease and diabetes to dementia. It means they are more likely to end up in hospital. But there is growing evidence that with better planning — by both the state and individual — some of these can be avoided.
If the elderly are given more support in the community, they will be more likely to stand a chance of remaining independent and out of hospital. In Torbay, for example, health and social care budgets have been combined, encouraging a better approach to caring for the elderly, resulting in a fall in hospital admissions.
A report published by Age UK points out that while old age does bring challenges, the problem isn't that serious. The report says that the majority of people over the age of 85 actually rate their health and quality of life as good.
According to the report, there are two key factors for the over85s: remaining active and maintaining friendships. The importance of living healthily is wellknown. But the role of socializing (交际) is often less acknowledged.
In fact, Age UK argues that socializing is just as important as the physical activity, as loneliness is a risk factor for both mental and physical decline. “Older_people_need_to_be_cared_about,_not_just_cared_for,” says Michelle
Mitchell of Age UK.

Friendships can help reduce depression and loneliness as well as enrich lives and improve health. __36__ Here are some useful tips that can help to overcome shyness and make new friends.
__37__
Many shy people find it really hard to talk to people. However, they need to get over this barrier and learn to talk to people. Start by talking to everyone —neighbors, the girl at the supermarket checkout counter, old people, kids and mums with kids. It's good practice. Whatever the topic is, shy people will find that with more practice, talking to people will become easier.
Work Out and Meet People
Working out is a great way to meet more people. Joggers, cyclists and swimmers often meet others with the same interests and goals around the park, bicycle trail or swimming pool. __38__ Sports do make excellent conversation topics.
Overcome Shyness and Make Friends by Volunteering
Volunteering or doing community work can enlarge a person's social network, too. Churches, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, women's shelters and community centers often need volunteers and community workers.
Join a Hobby Group to Meet New Friends
There are so many hobby groups that exist, so there's sure to be at least one or two groups that will suit even the shyest person. __39__ Many colleges or community centers also offer short courses for some activities. Meeting other people with similar interests often increases the chances of forming great friendships, since you start out with something in common.
Make and Accept Invitations
__40__ So invite a new friend to tea or arrange to meet up after the usual hobby group meeting. If someone invites the shy person out to a gathering or event, he or she should readily accept the invitation.
A.Inviting someone to tea or lunch is a sign that the inviter is keen to form some kind of connection with the invitee.
B.Talk More to People to Overcome Shyness
C.However, shy people often have a hard time making new friends.
D.While Talking, Listen and Ask Questions
