M:Yes, I want to borrow two novels and an English-Chinese dictionary.
(Text 2)
M:We are going on a picnic this coming Sunday. Don't you want to join us?
W:I'd love to. But you see, I'll have a test next Monday morning.
(Text 3)
M:Did you send all the invitations today?
W:I sent ten of them today and I will send five tomorrow.
(Text 4)
W:Didn't you and Oliver go to the football match last weekend?
M:Oliver did, but I was attending an important meeting in New York.
(Text 5)
M:The letter has just come.
W:I know. I saw you got it. It came early today. My watch says 9:10.
(Text 6)
M:I don't understand how and why, but the novel The Red and the Black seems to have disappeared.
W:But you just had it this morning, didn't you?
M:Yes, and I was very careful, I thought.
W:Have you checked all the usual places?
M:The usual and unusual.
W:Well, when I get finished here, I'll give a hand in looking for it.
M:Thanks. I'd really appreciate it.
W:Hey! Look what I have found!
M:That's it. Where on earth was it?
W:It had fallen off the desk into the corner.
(Text 7)
M:You're the only person who knows what really happened.
W:That's not quite true. Stan Bailey was there, too.
M:Oh. Was he there? I didn't know that.
W:Well, actually, he wasn't there the whole time, but I still think he saw enough to give some valuable opinions on the matter.
M:Do you think I should call him? Would he be willing to help?
W:No problem. You know Stan. He's the kind of guy that's always willing to go the extra mile.
M:Hey. That's right. I remember one time when he gave up two days of vacation just to help me out with a problem I had.
W:That's good to know. I guess you should give him a call, then.
(Text 8)
M:Why don't we buy some steaks for dinner?
W:Oh, no. We eat too much meat. Let's get some vegetables instead. They're over there.
M:OK. The fish looks fresh. Why don't we get some for tomorrow?
W:Well, I can't cook fish tomorrow. Mary is coming over and she doesn't eat fish.
M:Oh. Have we got enough yoghurt? She loves yoghurt.
W:She doesn't eat dairy products any more. She told me she eats cereals, seeds and nuts.
M:And is that healthy enough?
W:She says it is. By the way, did you remember to buy her a present for her birthday?
M:Yes, I did. I got her a leather handbag for $55.
W:Oh, no!
M:What? Do you think it was too expensive?
W:No, it's not that. She doesn't use or wear any animal products any more. She has joined the animal society.
(Text 9)
W:Hi, Victor. I heard you've got a part-time job.
M:No, I wish I had. I'm still on the waiting list.
W:Seems like it's hard to get a good part-time job these days.
M:You bet. The unemployment figures are up again this month.
W:Don't be so negative. Look at the jobs in the classifieds in today's newspaper...so many openings. Just print out your resume and send it to them.
M:I usually apply online. I send a short cover letter in the text of my e-mail and then attach my resume. What about you?
W:Well, I haven't even started planning to look for a job yet. I didn't get good grades last term because I bombed on two tests.
M:Was it because you didn't suck up to your teachers?
W:No, the teachers are helpful. The main reason, I guess, was that I haven't gotten accustomed to the way of learning here. In my country, we are used to learning through memorization. Here, we are taught to think by ourselves. I'm working hard to adjust, and I'm catching up. I've gotten high marks since the beginning of this term.
(Text 10)
No one can change or control the weather. But if we read correctly the signs around us, we can tell how the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting. For centuries people in all countries have studied the weather and tried weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people can feel in their bones the coming of wet weather—their joints hurt. Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. Some people say it is
probably because they are hunting for insects that fly low. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows, usually appear in the evening. If the stars twinkle clearly at night, then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, then the following day will be fine. If a rainbow appears in the morning, rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings originated with people who used their eyes and brains to forecast the weather.
第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节:(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A
On a hill 600 feet above the surrounding land, we watch the lines of rain move across the scene, the moon rise over the hills, and the stars appear in the sky. The views invite a long look from a comfortable chair in front of the wooden house.
Every window in our wooden house has a view, and the forest and lakes seldom look the same as the hour before. Each look reminds us where we are.
There is space for our three boys to play outside, to shoot arrows, collect tree seeds, build earth houses and climb trees.
Our kids have learned the names of the trees, and with the names have come familiarity and appreciation. As they tell all who show even a passing interest, maple(枫树) makes the best fighting sticks and white pines are the best climbing trees.
The air is clean and fresh. The water from the well has a
pleasant taste, and it is perhaps the healthiest water our kids will ever drink. Though they have one glass a day of juice and the rest is water, they never say anything against that.
The_seasons_change_just_outside_the_door. We watch the maples turn every shade of yellow and red in the fall and note the poplars(杨树) putting out the first green leaves of spring. The rainbow smelt fills the local steam as the ice gradually disappears, and the wood frogs start to sing in pools after being frozen for the winter. A family of birds rules our skies and flies over the lake.
