The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities and research institutions in the world. But to those who are new to it all, sometimes it can be confusing.
October is usually the busiest month in the college calendar. Universities have something called Freshers’ Week for their newcomers. It’s a great opportunity to make new friends, join lots of clubs and settle into university life.
However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, the prospect of meeting lots of strangers in big halls can be nerve-wracking (令人头
痛的). Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should you join?
Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you worrying about starting their university social life on the right foot. So just take it all in slowly. Don’t rush into anything that you’ll regret for the next three years.
Here is some top advice from past students on how to survive Freshers’ Week:
●Learn rules. Make sure you know British social etiquette (礼节). Have a few wine glasses and snacks handy for your housemates and friends.
●Be kind. Sometimes cups of tea or even slices of toast can give you a head start in making friends.
●Be sociable. The more active you are, the more likely you’ll be to meet new people than those who never leave their room.
●Bring a doorstop. Keep your door open when you’re in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you’re friendly.
So with a bit of clever planning and effort, Freshers’Week can give you a great start to your university life and soon you’ll be passing on your experience to next year’s new recruits.

C. discuss something about the Freshers’ Week in the UK
D. advise the freshmen how to behave well in the beginning

"Your homework is to collect sounds and take them down," Mrs. Olson said before class was over. She handed out sheets of paper shaped like giant ears.
On his way home, Colin glared out the school-bus window. Not fair, he thought. How could he collect enough sounds on his family's farm? If only he lived in the town.
He got off the bus when it stopped at his mailbox. But he wasn't in the mood to waveas it drove away.
"I’m home!”Colin called when he pushed open the gate. He threw his schoolbag down on a kitchen chair.
"How was school?" His mother asked, walking in with his baby brother on her shoulder.
"I’ve got homework," Colin complained.
"Eat something before doing your chores." His mother gave him the animal biscuits. Colin ate two tigers, three lions, and a s eal, then drank some milk.
Astrid, Colin's dog, woofed as Colin walked toward the barn(谷仓).Her young dogs were yipping. Colin placed dog food into their pan. In the chicken house, Colin hurried two hens from their nests. He put their warm eggs into his jacket. The black cow napped in the sun. Colin woke her when he poured corn into her pan. "Moo, thank you!”she seemed to say.
Co lin put the eggs in the kitchen, then climbed to his tree house as usual. He could see Dad's beehives(蜂箱)by the field. Six hives usually meant plenty of humming noise. But today he couldn't hear it over the chattering sound of the sparrows,How could a person think?
"QUIET!”Colin shouted.
Suddenly, he sat up straight. Cows mooed and young dogs yipped. Chickens crackled in their yard. When Astrid began woofing below, Colin smiled broadly. "I hear you!”he called. He hurried down from the tree.

Coca-Cola is probably the most famous brand in the world, and in some areas you can even access it easier than clean drinkable water. Although the company is trying to present itself as a health-conscious company, you can’t really say that drinking cola is healthy for you. Still, we all drink cola, some more and some less, and we tell ourselves that it’s all okay as long as we don’t overdo it. However, Coca-Cola has other functions besides drinking.
Cola removes the tarnish(暗锈) from old pennies. Got some old rusty pennies? Not to worry! Put them inside a glass of cola and let them rest for a while. When you get them out, you’ll have shiny pennies that will look as if they were coined a couple of days ago. If you couldn’t clean those pennies with industrial acids, just buy a can of cola and let it do its magic!
You can remove gum from your hair with cola. If you’ve got gum stuck in your hair and don’t know a better way to get it out, don’t worry, you won’t have to cut it. Just pour some cola into a bowl and dip the part of your hair with gum on
it inside. Leave it for a couple of minutes and then simply wipe off the gum.
You can make an exploding fountain. You probably know about this one. You can make an exploding fountain by putting a mint(薄荷糖) inside a two-liter bottle. Then move away from the bottle and get ready for a Coca-Cola explosion. This is a fun thing to do, but it is also a warning — don’t eat a mint and drink cola at the same time, because a similar thing could happen to your stomach.
28.What does the underlin ed part in Paragraph 1 imply?
A. The expense of Coca-Cola is lo w.
B. Coca-Cola enjoys great popularity.
C. Coca-Cola is safe for people to drink.
D. Coca-Cola is harder to get than drinkable water.
29.What can cola be used to do?
A. Improve people’s hair.
B. Dissolve the gum.
C. Make pennies shiny.
D. Take the place of acids.
30.Why can’t we eat a mint and drink cola at the same time?
A. It can cause harm to our stomach.
B. It might make our stomach smaller.
C. Mints with cola will produce heat.
D. The mint will release poisonous substances.
31.What’s the main idea of the text?
A. The major ingredients of Coca-Cola.
B. Why Coca-Cola is popular among the young.
C. Some of the strangest uses of Coca-Cola.
D. Why we can’t drink Coca-Cola too often.
D
“Beating is a sign of affection, cursing (骂)is a sign of love.”
Many may not expect to hear the words of the old Chinese saying in these modern times—with parents wealthier and better educated than they have ever been—but
experts say they still ring true.
Today,it seems,Chinese parents are more likely to send their children to precollege military academies in the United States in the hope that some tough love will pave the way to success.
“Good education doesn't mean letting your children enjoy privileges, especially our boys.” said Song Wenming,an entrepreneur (企业家)in Jinhua,East China's Zhejiang province. “They should be raised in tough conditions t o know what to fight for in the future.”
In August,Song sent his 17yearold son to Valley Forge Military Academy (VFMA) in Pennsylvania. And he is far from alone, even though it takes a lot of money—around $48,000 per year—to send a child to a strict military school.
Statistics show that an increasing number of Chinese students have been registering with such academies.
A few years ago, there were no Chinese students at Valley Forge. Today, there are 28.“All of the Chinese students at Valley Forge came from w ealthy families;some of them were spoiled.” said Jennifer Myers, director of marketing and communications at the school.
Song's only son,Song Siyu, had a rocky start during his first six weeks at the school. The teenager said he went to the school voluntarily but did not expect it to be as difficult.
Now,three months later,he has perfected the art of taking a bath in 35 seconds, finishing a meal without looking at his food, and making his bed with precision. He can even take criticism,no matter how unreasonable.
“The training is hard but I know it is good for selfdevelopment of individuals.” said Song Siyu. “The endless training and scolding are just ways to build up our character;they are not personal.”
But his enthusiasm is not universal. Ten of the 13 Chinese students who joined the academy this year have transferred to other schools.
But for those who stick with it,there is a reward for all the hard work. 32.From the second paragraph,we can know the old Chinese saying _____________ . A.is out of date in modern times
B.is disagreed by rich parents
C.is still worth trusting
D.is deeply believed by better educated parents
33.The underlined sentence means that _____________.
A.Song sent his only son to military school,so he feels lonely
B.Song is the only one who sends his child to military school
C.there are other people sending their children to military school besides Song D.the fee of the military school is so high that only Song can afford it 34.How many Chinese students are there at Valley Forge before this year?
A.10. B. 13. C.15. D.25.
35.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A.It's likely that more and more Chinese students will attend VFMA.
B.Most Chinese parents approve of educating their children by beating and cursing nowadays.
C.Song Siyu had no difficulty in adjusting to the life at VFMA.
D.Most Chinese students support the way of education at VFMA.

What will you do if you can’t eat everything bought in the canteen? 36 According to a survey, what students waste every year could feed over 10 million people.
37 According to Xinhua News Agency, the food wasted by Chinese people
is about 50 million tons of grain every year, which could feed 200 million people.
Food waste, which has become a global issue, serves as a mirror that reflects various cultural and social issues in different countries. In t he West, for instance, consumerism, the belief that it’s good to use a lot of goods and services, is often
to blame for food waste. 38 Chinese people are well known for being hospitable and generous. Many even feel that they lose face if their guests have eaten all the food. On campus, a gen eration of single children is less aware of
the food waste issue. Students nowadays are well protected by their families and hardly have any concept of how much toil others go through in order to provide them
with the food they eat.
39 There are 925 million hungry peopl e in the world. They don’t have enough food to eat . And farmers work very hard to grow the crops. 40 It’s
also important that everyone thinks about how they can do their bit to reduce food waste. Recently a campaign against food waste launched on line in China might make you think twice about being so wasteful.
A. But canteen waste is merely the tip of the iceberg.
B. So we shouldn’t waste our food.
C. Students can never realize the serious food waste situation.
D. Most of us would simply throw away any leftover food.
E. Students waste is extremely serious.
F. To reduce food waste is a big task, and it needs time.
G. China, in turn, features its own eating culture.

(Text 1)
W: Jack, how do you like the play?
M: It’s a simple story with a happy ending. But unluckily, they had a very strong actor and he managed to carry the whole play.
(Text 2)
M: Have we missed it? The man said it’s only five blocks away, opposite the bank. W: Wait a minute. The Chinese restaurant, the National Bank… there it is, the Rederson Hotel.
(Text 3)
M: Let’s meet at twenty to five.
W: Well, could we make it twenty past five?
M: That’s a bit late for me. I could manage ten past.
W: OK. See you then.
(Text 4)
M: What time are we leaving for the outing?
W: I’ll phone you tomorrow. I should have everything sorted out by then.
(Text 5)
W: Thanks for all you’ve done for me. He y, listen. Would you like to go to see a film sometime
M: Yeah, that’d be great. I’d love it
(Text 6)
W: Hey, where is everybody?
M: They took Ben to the park. Where have you been?
W: Sorry, I’m late. I picked up the cake and it took me longer than I expec ted. When will the party start?
M: Ben invited eight children from school and they’ll arrive at about two in the afternoon.
W: OK, then. I’ll put the candles on the cake and leave it in the kitchen. And then I’ll come and help set the table.
(Text 7)
M: So, Maisie, how was your holiday?
W: Oh, we loved it. Tom liked Germany best but France was my favorite.
M: So did Rachel finally go with you?
W: No, she wasn’t able to. She was called away for a business trip to China. M: That’s a pity. So where exactly di d you go and visit?
W: Well, we traveled all over, Italy, Spain and Holland. We even bathed in a Swiss lake.
M: You did? Really?
(Text 8)
W: Bob, I’m sure you know about second-hand smoke.
M: Of course, I do.
W: But have you heard about third-hand smoke?
M: Third-hand smoke? I’m afraid not. What is it then?
W: Well, it’s here in today’s paper: Parents may think they’re protecting children
from second-hand smoke when they smoke outside their home or only when the children are not there. But now researchers are warning about what they call third-hand smoke. When you smoke, dangerous matter from cigarettes gets into your hair and clothing. As ba bies are the weakest, when you come to a baby, you pass it to the baby and increase the chances of disease in the baby.
M: Is that so? In that case, I have to say that I should never get close to a baby. W: That’s right. Actually all smoking parents should do the same, or better give it up completely.
(Text 9)
M: Hello, welcome to our program, Today’s City. I’m Larry. We’re going to Louisville, Kentucky, where our guest Michelle Ray comes from. She is proud of her middle-sized city with a small town feel and big city dreams. Now Michelle, tell us about your city.
W: Thank you, Larry. Here’s my city. Louisville is my ci ty. The first place I take a visitor from out of town is to the Highlands for shopping and nightlife. When I have delicious Asian food, I always go to the Zen Garden which provides wonderful all-vegetable dishes.
M: Wow, that’s interesting. Many people go for healthy food now.
W: You can say that again. If I want to go camping and fishing, I go to the Red River area. For complete quiet, I can hide away in my house with a good book from one of our public libraries.
M: That all sounds very exciting. I’m sure some of our listeners will include Louisville in their travel plan for their next holiday. Thank you, Michell e
.(Text 10)
M: We’re glad to have Dr Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question: Does everyone dream?
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don’t remember their dreams or they don’t think their dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of as a child when they first reported their dreams or it was so frightening that they
just turned off dreaming completely. The other day someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he stopped having dreams.
I asked him what had happened. It turned out that his brother died of a heart attack and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and a dream about it was too terrible, people prefer not to dream about it. Actually the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming because it means that the bad experience was too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you’re dreaming about it, and even if the dreams are frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams, when a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill, or when a person has been really sad. If people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don’t allow themselves to even think about it.(923)。
