13、Children with autism(孤独症) have difficulty with social skills and communication. They often act in limited and repeated ways and have what seem like unusual strong interests.
Autism is more often seen in boys than girls. What causes it is not clear. Scientists are studying DNA and possible environmental influences.
Doctors usually cannot confirm a diagnosis(确诊) of autism until a child is about three years old. Rebecca Landa is a researcher at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. Professor Landa wanted to find out what differences in development might be seen earlier. She led a new study that observed 235 babies between 6 and 36 months of age.
“At six months of age, when you lay your baby on their back and you pull them by the arms gently into a seated place, the baby’s head may nod back behind the shoulders, like poor head control. But that does not mean that the baby is going to have autism. It does mean the baby needs to have some exercises to help their body get stronger. And when the babies strengthen their bodies, they are better able to play with toys and also with people, which will help them have better outcomes.”
By the time a baby is one year old, signs of possible autism include difficulty in using words and not looking
eye-to-eye or reaching out to other people. By 14 months, the baby might smile less and use language less. However, Professor Landa says these signs can be very small and their children might be missed during a short health exam.
“It’s important for parents to pay attention to their children’s development, and if they care about a child’s development, they should listen to experts.”
The earlier parents notice delays, she says, the sooner they can begin simple things that may help improve their children’s development. For example, they can talk to the children about what they are doing, give opinions when the children show them something, and play simple games that keep the children’s attention.

14、One day while driving from my home to work. I noticed a car in front of me had a wobbly(不稳定的)wheel. It was clear that the wheel had been changed recently and had not been fixed correctly. On a slow road this would not show much of a problem but I knew a highway was coming soon. There the traffic would move much faster and the driver would be in danger as the wheel could come off at that speed.
I was driving a large jeep at the time and the car in front was a small one driven by a young lady on her own. So as I tried to flash(闪)my lights and wave her to pull over, I was worried that she wouldn't’ pull over on the road side when she found in her mirror a single man chasing(追) her down in a jeep and waving for her to pull over.
Thankfully. she trusted more in the good nature of people and pulled over where I could explain the problem. She said the wheel was changed only the night before and that she would pull into the nearest garage(修车间)where the repairman had tools to fix the wheel correctly.
My belief is that the act of kindness was hers and not mine. How so? Well, it was she who chose to believe in the possibility that people are good over the belief that bad things would come from being waved over to the side of the road by strangers.
I am glad I was able to wave her down in time and so a serious accident might have been avoided. But I am even happier that she believed in a stranger.

A.Trusting in the Kindness of Strangers
B.A Wobbly Wheel of a Car
C.A Lady Who Was Saved
D.Accident That Didn’ t Happen

15、You’ve got plenty of emails from your mom,and maybe even a few from dear old grandma. But have you ever received a message from a river?
Now,Ireland’s River Lee is sending out much info rmation, thanks to wireless(无线的) technology. In a program called the DEPLOY project, scientists have put some sensors(传感器) in rivers that can find pollution levels.
Instead of asking scientists to collect water samples several times a day,the government can now examine pollution levels in the water, and find out if there is anything polluted entering the river. This makes it much easier for scientists to protect the environment, since problems can be discovered before a serious pollution accident really happens.
People in the area can also receive free reports from the river,so that they can find out whether the water is safe for swimming or boating on a certain day. And people can also know if the water is clear enough for them to drink and use.
The DEPLOY project has not only started in Ireland, also the same programs have started in thousands of places around the U.S. Now you live in a world in which you could receive information with your mobile phone about environment. The technology should help to make us know more about the pollution that surrounds us—which just might get us all a little more involved with trying to clean up our world.

17、Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it,while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?
To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants alsoneed water. In very dry parts of the Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That's why dry deserts(沙漠) everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.
Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil(土壤) found between the cracks ofthe stones to grow in. Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.
What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass, will grow in sand, but most plants won't. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants eachday, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no plant food.

18、Do you know some great inventors and their inventions?
What factors (因素) are needed for their success?
Well, good timing for a start. You can have a great idea which the public simply doesn’t want ... yet. The Italian Giovanni Caselli invented the first fax(传真)machine in the 1860s. Although the machine was excellent, his invention quickly died a commercial(商业的) death. It was not until the 1980s that the fax became very common in every office... too late for Giovanni Caselli.
Money also helps. The Frenchman Denis Papin (1647-1712) had the idea for a steam engine (蒸汽机)almost a hundred years before the better-remembered Scotsman James Watt was even born... but he never had enough money to build one.
You also need to be patient (it took scientists nearly eighty years to develop a light bulb which actually worked)... but not too patient. In the 1870s, Elisha Gray, a professional inventor from Chicago, developed plans for a telephone. Gray saw it as no more than “a beautiful toy”. However, when he finally sent details of his invention to the Patent Office(专利局) in February,1876, it was too late. Almost the same invention had arrived two hours earlier... and the young man who sent it, Alexander Graham Bell, will always be remembered as the inventor of the telephone.
Of course what you really need is a great idea—but if you haven’t got one, a walk in the c ountry and careful look at nature can help. The Swiss scientist, George de Mestral, had the idea for Velcro(魔术贴)when he found his clothes
covered in sticky seed pods after a walk in the country. During a similar walk in the French countryside some 250 years earlier, Rene Antoine Ferchault de Reaumur had the idea that paper could be made from wood when he found an abandoned wasps’ nest(蜂巢).
You also need good commercial sense. Willy Higinbotham was a scientist doing nuclear(核能的)research in the Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, USA.In 1958, the public were invited to an exhibition in the Laboratory to see their work, but both parents and children were more interested in a tennis video game on the screen. Soon hundreds of people were ignoring the other exhibits to play the first ever computer game—made from a simple laboratory instrument called an “oscilloscope”. Higinbotham, however, never made money from his invention: he thought people were only interested in the game because the other exhibits were so boring!
1.How many factors do inventors need according to the passage?
A.3. B.4. C.5. D.6.
2.The word “ignoring” in the last paragraph probably means “_____”.
A.having no idea of B.doing no good to
C.getting no chance of D.paying no attention to
3.What can you learn from the passage?
A.Giovanni Caselli invented the first fax machine in the 1980s.
B.Denis Papin afforded to build a steam engine a hundred years ago.
C.Elisha Gray missed the chance to be the inventor of the telephone.
D.George de Mestral got an idea from a walk in a French countryside.

C.How to have a good commercial sense
D.How to make money from inventions

19、Boys and girls,
As Francis Bacon once said, reading makes a full man. A good book can affect our life in one way or another. My Life Story by Helen Keller is one such book as touched my heart. It is about how Helen overcame her physical disabilities and succeeded by struggling in her long and hard learning period.
From the book, I learned that whenever we come across difficulties or even misfortune, we should never give in or run away. Instead, we are supposed to face them bravely and try to find ways out. Reading can not only improve our ability to understand the world, but also wash our souls. To live an enjoyable and meaningful life, let’s read more good books! That’s all. Thank you!。
