14、Old age may not sound exciting. But recent findings offer good news for older people and for people worried about getting older. Researchers found that people become happier and experience less worry after they reach the age of 50. In fact, they say by the age of 85, people are happier with their life than they were when they were 18 years old.
The findings came from a survey of more than 340,000 adults in the United States. The Gallup Organization questioned them by telephone in 2008. At that time, the people were between the ages of 18 and 85. The researchers asked questions about emotions like happiness, sadness and worry. They also asked about mental or emotional stress.
Arthur Stone in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at Stony Brook University in New York led the study. His team found that levels of stress were highest among adults between the ages of 24 and 25. The findings showed that stress levels dropped sharply after people reached their fifties.
The study also showed that men and women have similar feeling patterns as they grow older. However, women at all ages reported more sadness, stress and worry than men.
Researchers say they do not know why happiness increases as people get older. One theory is that, as people grow older, they grow more thankful for what they have and have better control of their feelings. They so spend less time thinking about bad experiences.
Professor Stone says the emotional patterns could be linked to changes in how people see the world, or maybe even changes in brain chemistry.
The researchers also considered possible influences like having young children, being unemployed or being single. But
they found that influences like these did not affect the levels of happiness and well-being related to age. 1.According to the survey of the Gallup Organization people are most likely to become happier .

How do astronauts have meals?
Eating in space is different from eating on the earth. The food that astronauts carry with them doesn’t look like the fo od you eat on the earth.
Some food is carried in closed bags. It is cooked and frozen before the astronauts get it. All the water is removed from the food. In the space capsule(太空舱), the astronaut puts the water back. He “shoots” hot or cold water into the food bag with a special gun. He eats the food through a small hole in the bag.
Other foods come in bite sizes. The astronaut puts a whole piece in his mouth at a time. There can be no crumb(食物碎屑) floating around the capsule. Meat, cakes and cereal often come in bite-sized pieces.
Astronauts can’t drink water from open cups. The water would float in drops in the air. The water is put in the special gun. The astronaut shoots the water into his mouth.

17、 A polar bear swam in the Thames River in London. How did that happen? Susan Fletcher remembers wondering when she first read a history of the Royal Menagerie(皇家动物园)at the Tower of London.
Fletcher knew she wanted to write about that bear, but she also knew she would have to do a lot of research. The bear lived more than 750 years ago, during the medieval(中世纪的)period in Europe.
Fletcher loves digging around in the past, though. Most of her 12 books have been set in "times long ago and far away". And most include animal characters, both real and imaginary. Journey of the Pale Bear took five years to research and write, because there were so few facts about the bear, its keeper and their travels. Fletcher imagined the keeper as a 12-year-old boy
named Arthur. In the novel, Arthur and a polar bear travel from Norway to England in 1252.
Writing the book was also a journey for Fletcher. She started it in Portland, Oregon, but finished it about 2,000 miles away, when she married the historian in Texas who was helping with her research.
Like her character Arthur. Fletcher leamed much about polar bears by spending time with them. Thanks to a special invitation from the curator(负责人)of the Oregon Zoo, Fletcher had a chance to closely watch two polar bears. Neville, Fletchers dog, also helped Fletcher better understand how humans and animals might communicate without words. Being with Neville
gave Fletcher ideas about how Arthur and the bear might relate to each other.
The most exciting part of the research, though, was a visit to the Tower of London. There Fletcher saw the Thames River, where the real bear swam and caught fish.
1.What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A.How Fletcher got the idea for her book.
B.Fletcher 's first time seeing a polar bear.
C.Fletcher 's first visit to the Royal Menagerie.
D.How Fletcher fell in love with the Thames River.
2.What can we learn about Fletcher s research journey?
A.It started in London B.It was full of danger
C.It took her nearly 12 years D.It covered about 2.000 miles
3.What did the curator of the Oregon Zoo do for Fletcher?
A.He joined her in doing research
B.He invited her to work in the zoo.
C.He allowed her to watch two polar bears closely.
D.He gave her ideas on human-animal communication.
4.What was the most exciting part of Fletcher’s research?
A.Working with a historian. B.A visit to the Oregon Zoo.
C.Spending time with Neville. D.A visit to the Tower of London.

19、Dear friends,
Reading is very important in our daily life. But many students don’t have the reading habit. They don’t know what to read. Sometimes there is too much homework to do, so they don’t have time to read. What’s worse, they would rather spend their free time on computer games. I love reading and I’m in the school Reading Club. I got a lot of knowledge through reading. I have read over ten books since last September. I think reading helps open up a whole new world to us. I’m sure reading will be popular as time goes on!
Come on, Everyone! Let’s start reading now!。
