第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Nobel prize winners sometimes display as much uniqueness when deciding how to spend their prize money as they did on the work that won them the award in the first place.
When Sir Paul Nurse won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2001, he decided to upgrade his motorbike. A fellow winner in 1993, Richard Roberts, installed a croquet lawn in front of his house. Austrian author Elfriede Jelinek, who won in 2004, said the prize meant “financial independence.”
Lars Heikensten, executive director of the Nobel Foundation, said there were no obvious shopping trends among winners.
“I think it depends a lot o n which country they come from, their personal finances... what kind of incomes they have when they get the prize,” he said.
Real estate, however, is a popular option, at least among those willing to reveal what they spend the money on. Phillip Sharp, the American co-winner of the 1993 medicine prize, decided to splash out on a 100-year-old Federal style house. “I took that money and bought a little bit bigger house... It’s a beautiful old place,” he told AFP(法新社), adding that “The money is a nice part of the process”, but “the important thing about the prize is the recognition.”
For winners of the peace prize the decision is often more clear-cut, as the honor tends to go to politicians, organizations and activists who are under more public supervision. Many, like US President Barack Obama in 2009 and the European Union in 2012, donate to charities.
Literature winners tend to be more private about how they use the money, but the choice is often equally straightforward. “Even if Nobel-winning authors are quite well known, many of them will not have made much money from writing," said Anna Gunder, a Nobel literature expert at Uppsala University. While the prize might keep the wolf from the door for some years, giving them freedom to write, it can also briefly ha ve the opposite effect. “It really changes their careers... During the first year after they’ve won they often write less, but they generally continue after a year or two,” said Gunder.
1、From the passage, we learn that ________.
A.the money is actually the best part of the Nobel Prize
B.Nobel winners have great originality in using prize money
C.few winners would spend their prize money on houses
D.winners become more independent on their country
2、Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underl ined phrase “clear-cut” in paragraph 6?
A.open B.private C.unique D.complex
3、According to the passage, in the first year after winning Noble Prize, literature winners may ________. A.become less productive
B.make more money from writing
C.have the freedom to create more and better works
D.disappear from the public eyes for a period of time
22.(8分)David Rees runs a truly distinctive business. He charges customers $15 to sharpen their pencils to perfections, using a variety of tools.
I know what you're thinking — is this a joke? The 39-year-old gets asked that question a lot. To clarify everything, he even created a special section on his website telling everyone he's actually providing a real service.
You can supply your own pencil or you can have Rees sharpen one of his own favorite 2B pencils. After that, he mails it to you in a display tube with the shavings in a separate bag, and an authentic certificate which just happens to mention the pencil is so sharp as to be a dangerous object.
To achieve the desired result, the master sharpener uses all kinds of tools, including general sandpapers, pocket knives and even a special $450 sharpening machine. "It depends on what the customer wants to use his/her pencil for," he says. "That determines the most appropriate pencil-sharpening technique.
Some customers buy pencils as inspirational symbols while others buy them because of their special memories of classic 2B pencils.
$15 to have a pencil sharpened is a bit expensive though, right? You're not the only one who feels that way, and David's unique business has really angered lots of people, who talk of inequality in America, saying it is so insane for the wealthy to pay $15 to sharpen a pencil. But others will say, "This is just our urge to put an end to the welfare state because new ideas arise along with the business."
David admits his trade is sort of unusual. But there are those who actually value his service, as proven by the over 500 orders he has gotten.
1、How could David make money by sharpening pencils?

B.He promoted his skill on his website.
C.He saved lots of time for other people.

2、From his words, we can infer that David Bees .
A.knows all kinds of pencil users B.provides personalized services
C.values ideas behind the pencils D.always write with pencils
3、What does the underlined word "insane" (in Paragraph 5) mean?
A.Deliberate. B.Rewarding.
C.Unreasonable. D.Irresponsible.
4、What seems to be the author's attitude to David Bees' trade?
A.It's a fancy service. B.It has a good reputation.
C.It's awfully expensive. D.It wastes time and money.
23.(8分)Judging from recent surveys, most experts in sleep behavior agree that there is virtually an epidemic(流行病)of sleepiness in the nation. “I can’t think of a single study that hasn’t found Americans getting less sleep than they ought to,” says Dr. David. Even people who think they are sleeping enough would probably be better off with more rest.
The beginning of our sleep-deficit (睡眠不足)crisis can be traced to the invention of the light bulb a century ago. From diary entries and other personal accounts from the 18th and 19th centuries, sleep scientists have reached the conclusion that the average person used to sleep about 9. 5 hours a night. "The best sleep habits once were forced on us, when we had nothing to do in the evening down on the farm, and it was dark." By the 1950s and 1960s, that sleep schedule had been reduced dramatically, to between 7.5 and 8 hours, and most people had to wake to an alarm clock. "People cheat on their sleep, and they don't even realize they're doing it," says Dr David. "They think they're okay because they can get by on 6.5 hours, when they really need 7.5, 8 or even more to feel ideally energetic."
Perhaps the most merciless robber of sleep, researchers say, is the complexity of the day. When ever pressures from work, family, friends and community mount, many people consider sleep the least expensive item on his programme. "In our society, you're considered dynamic if you say you only need 5.5 hours' sleep. If you've got to get 8.5 hours, people think you lack drive and ambition."
To determine the consequences of sleep deficit, researchers have put subjects through a set of psychological and performance tests requiring them, for instance, to add columns of numbers or recall a passage read to them only minutes earlier. "We've found that if you're in sleep deficit, performance suffers," says Dr David. "Short-term memory is weakened, as are abilities to make decisions and to concentrate."
1、According to Dr. David, Americans ________.
A.are ideally vigorous even under the pressure of life
B.often neglect the consequences of sleep deficit
C.do not know how to relax themselves properly
D.can get by on 6.5 hours of sleep

B.they need more sleep to cope with the complexities of everyday life
C.to sleep is something one can do at any time of the day
D.enough sleep promotes people’s drive and ambition
3、The word “subjects” (Line 1, Para 4) refers to __________.
A.the performance tests used in the study of sleep deficit
B.special branches of knowledge that are being studied
C.people whose behavior or reactions are being studied
D.the psychological consequences of sleep deficit
4、It can be concluded from the passage that one should sleep as many hours as is necessary to ____________. A.improve one’s memory dramatically
B.be considered dynamic by other people
C.maintain one’s daily schedule
D.feel energetic and perform adequately
24.(8分)Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus(马戏表演). Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter. This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of 12. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents. The children talked excitedly about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night. One could sense they had never been to the circus before.
The father and mother seemed happy as they could be.
The tickets lady asked how many tickets the father wanted, he proudly answered, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adults’ tickets, so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady told him the price.
The father lowered h is head and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again told him the price.
The man didn’t have enough money. How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight kids that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus.
Seeing what was happening, my dad took a $20 note from his pocket and dropped in on the ground. (We were not wealthy in any sense of the world!) My father reached down, picked up the bill, tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.” The man knew what was going on. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, pressed tightly onto the bill, and with his lip quivering and a tear streaming down his
cheek, he replied, “Thank you, thank you, Sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
My father and I went back to our car and drove home. We didn’t go to the circus that night, but we could go without.

A.The tickets were too expensive.
B.His children were noisy.

D.he didn’t want to hurt the man’s pride and respect
3、We can conclude from the last sentence of the story that______.
A.they felt it a pity that they didn’t go to the circus
B.th ey didn’t feel bad thought they didn’t go to the circus
C.they felt they would be blessed for their behavior
D.they had never gone to the circus ever since
25.(10分)Imagine waking up one day and finding that your beautiful local beach is no more—gone, its fine white sand swept away by an abnormal storm. You go about your daily business for 12 long years and then suddenly the beach is back, all its glory restored by another storm. This is what happened on the island of Achill, off the coast of Ireland, where people are celebrating the return of the beautiful Ashleam Bay beach that was taken from them in 2005.
That in itself is unusual enough, but the story gets even better! You see, another beach in Achill did a disappearing act once, but took much longer to return. The beach at Doonagh, located only six miles away from Ashleam Bay, was restored earlier in 2016 after waves created by spring storms had swept away all the sand in 1984, leaving just rock pools behind.
There is local legend that stretches back hundreds of years that says this beach at Ashlcam Bay returns for a short every seven years then disappears again. But this time around it took a bit longer than that. It was last seen in 2005 and it stayed for a few months at that time before it was washed away again.
As you can imagine, everyone on the island of Achill is thrilled to have their sandy beach back, and even though no one knows how long it’s going to be around for, they are making the most of the time they’ve got before it disappears
again.
Some may be quick to believe climate changes cause the phenomenon, but that’s not the reason these two beaches in Achill keep disappearing, Dr Kevin Lynch, a geographer at NUT Galway, says that these occurrences are the result of hydrodynamics (流体力学) and sediment(沉积物) supply, rather than climate changes.
Regardless of what’s causing them, disappearing and reappearing beaches are just part of what makes nature so fascinating.
1、What is people’s reaction to the return of the Ashleam Bay beach?
A.Full of fear.
B.Quite delighted.
C.Very disappointed.
D.Extremely con fused.
2、What can we learn about the beach at Doonagh?
A.It is not located in Ireland.
B.It disappeared 12 years ago.
C.It once disappeared for more than 30 years.
D.It is just made up of rocks and pools.
3、According to the local legend, when should the Ashleam Bay beach have come back?
A.In 1982.
B.In 2012.
C.In 2016.
D.In 2018.
4、What does Dr Kevin Lynch think of the phenomenon?
A.Some abnormal storms lead to ocean’s enlargement,
B.It is hard to uncover the mystery of beach’s disappearing.
C.Climate changes can result in beaches disappearing completely.
D.Hydrodynamics and sediment supply cause two beaches to disappear.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)
29、Dear sir,
It is said that a summer camp is to be held in your school and a few courses are available to choose from. I am interested in gardening very much.
During the learning period, I expect to gain some basic gardening knowledge. First, I want to know how to tell different species of plants and flowers apart. Secondly, the proper cutting time and frequency to water are some other skills I want to learn. In addition, a little knowledge concerning choosing suitable soil or the reasonable planting positions will also be a good choice.
The main reason why I choose gardening is that I want to help my parents with their work in the garden. Besides, I find that we students generally lack the knowledge of gardening, missing a chance to have a word with nature.
Yours,
Li Hua。
