一项活动改变了我的大学生活英语作文An Activity That Changed My College Life
Hi there! My name is Timmy and I'm 8 years old. I may seem a little young to be writing about college, but I actually just graduated from Harvard University last month! I know, it's pretty crazy for a kid my age. But I've always been kind of a genius.
Anyway, I wanted to tell you about this really neat activity I did in college that totally changed my whole experience. It was called the "Cheese Club" and it was basically a club for people who really, really loved cheese. Yeah, I know what you're thinking - a cheese club? At an Ivy League school? It sounds kind of silly. But just hear me out!
It all started at the activities fair during my first week on campus. I was walking around checking out all the different clubs when I came across this booth that had, like, a million different types of cheese samples. Being the sophisticated gentleman that I am, I'm usually more of a wine and caviar kind of guy. But even I have to admit, that cheese smelled amazing.
The students running the booth seemed really passionate about it too. They were going on and on about the different varieties, talking about things like "notes of grass-fed milk" and
"crystalline crunchy proteins." It all sounded like a foreign language to me at the time. But they convinced me to sign up and become a club member on the spot.
And boy, am I glad I did! From that day on, my life at Harvard completely changed. The Cheese Club ended up becoming my whole social circle and core friend group. We had weekly meetings where we'd analyze different cheese plates, pair them with fancy crackers and drink wine that complemented the flavors. We took field trips to local creameries and even went on aspring break trip to Switzerland to learn about traditional Alpine cheeses. It was a cheese lover's dream!
The club gave me a whole new appreciation for cheese that I never could have imagined before. Did you know that there are actually different regulations and classifications for what qualifies as a real Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese? Or that cheese makers have to follow very strict guidelines to get certified in places like France? It's a fascinating art-form with so much history and tradition behind it.
But being in the Cheese Club was about more than just stuffing our faces with dairy products (although there was plenty of that too). It also connected me with a super tight-knit group of friends who shared my newfound obsession. Stereotypically,
you might think Harvard students are just straight-laced nerds who do nothing but study all the time. But the Cheese Club crowd was like a secret society of cool, quirky free-spirits.
We'd have these amazing discussions analyzing the subtleties of each cheese variety - "I'm getting hints of a barnyard funk on that one, don't you think?" Stuff like that. Or we'd have hilarious wine-and-cheese fueled parties where we'd make up silly cheesy puns and jokes. Like, "Why did the cheese guitarist join a metal band? Because he wanted to shredder some cheddar!" Ba dum tss!
Some of my favorite college memories are just hanging out with my cheesy comrades at our regular spot in the student lounge. We'd analyze the latest cheeses we got from a specialty import shop, or swap stories about traveling abroad to taste obscure regional cheeses. I remember this one time we tried a really runny, stinky French cheese that was basically inedible. We all passed around this tiny wedge, each taking the smallest bite possible to avoid ingesting too much of that ungodly pungent aroma. We Had tears running down our faces from the sheer eye-watering intensity of it! But we were all having such a riot laughing about it too. Pure comedy.
The Cheese Club gave me a true sense of camaraderie and community within the larger Harvard ecosystem. At an institution that can often feel alienating and isolating, it was so nice to have this core group of fellow cheese fanatics that I could relate to and bond with over our shared quirky interest. I felt like I truly belonged.
And believe it or not, being a part of the Cheese Club even helped me academically too! You're probably thinking "Come on Timmy, how could snacking on cheese and drinking wine help you pass your astrophysics courses?" But bear with me here...
As cheesy (hah!) as it sounds, learning about the art and craft of cheese-making gave me a deeper appreciation for things like food chemistry, microbiology, fermentation science, and even the physics behind processes like temperature control and aging.
I was able to draw upon those concepts I learned from the cheesemongers and apply them to plenty of my STEM coursework too. You'd be surprised how studying for an exam on oxidation-reduction reactions is a lot more interesting when you can relate it back to fun facts you know about aging cheese!
The club also helped me develop a more sophisticated palate and senses. Detecting those subtle notes and flavor profiles in different cheeses trained me to pick up on nuances in
the taste and smell of things. That skill totally came in handy during my Intro to Sensory Evaluation class where we had to examine foods through scent, taste, texture and more each week.
I aced that course thanks to my refined cheese tasting abilities.
On top of that, being part of the Cheese Club gave me a creative outlet and social life that balanced out the intense academic rigor of Harvard. Don't get me wrong, I worked my butt off in all my science and math classes. But the club provided me with a chance to nurture the other "goofier" side of my personality too and have some zany, free-spirited fun. I genuinely think it kept me sane amid all the late-night study sessions and stress of finals week.
It also gave me a passion project and extracurricular activity that ended up beefing up my resume quite a bit. I mean, not everyone can say they were the Vice President of Cheese Procurement and Acquisitions for their university's official Cheese Club, you know? I leveraged that experience to land some pretty cool internships like being a cheese blogger for a specialty food magazine one summer. It really set me apart from other applicants.
So in summary, what started as just a cheesy (sorry) college club for me ended up becoming a core component of my entire
Harvard experience. It provided me with an instant social group, creative outlet, academic inspiration and passion project all in one. Heck, the Cheese Club is probably the main reason why I even made it through those four years with my sanity intact! Those dopey goofs were like a second family to me.
I have so many amazing memories from my time in that club - from the life-changing cheese travels and epic eating contests, to the lifelong friends and skills I developed along the way. Even though I'm an extraordinarily accomplished elementary school graduate now, I'll always look back fondly on my cheesy days up at Harvard. Who knows, maybe I'll even end up becoming a master cheesemonger myself one day! Thanks Cheese Club, you wedged a goudanormous hole in my heart!。
