W: Everyone is looking at the issue in the short term, rather than the long term. It's the same as the destroying of the forests. Countries and companies just want the wood. They're not thinking about the long-term damage to the forests.
M: In other parts of the world, especially in Africa, climate change and over-farming are causing farmland to turn into desert. It means that people cannot grow enough food.
W: Damaging the environment actually leads to many problems among people.
M: Have you ever thought about joining an organization to protect the environment? You could get involved with projects to improve the environment.
W: I think I'd like to do that.

My outlook on life took a sharp turn last year when I learned about the 1994 genocide (种族大屠杀) in Rwanda. I first heard of the genocide when a survivor came to my school and talked about her experience. Hearing about the frightening murders made me ashamed that I had never heard of the Rwandan Genocide and it bothered me deeply to realize that events go on in the world that deserve to be recognized, but for whatever reason, are not.
Listening to that speaker changed me, and afterward I learned as much about the genocide as I could. I read books, went on the Internet, and watched movies. In my research I came across a man who became my biggest hero: Paul Rusesabagina, a Rwandan who managed to save over 1,000 people through bravery and selflessness.
I was excited when I heard he was going to speak at Rutgers University about his experience in Rwanda. I never dreamed that I
would be in the same room with Paul Rusesabagina, let alone shake hands with him, but I was lucky to meet this man whom I admired and respected so much. His story attracted me because he is, in the purest sense, an ordinary man. The sacrifices (牺牲) he made for so many, however, are something that most people could not do.
When I met Rusesabagina I didn't know what to say. Even though it was only a brief moment, I was able to tell him how much his courage meant to me, His story makes me want to be a better person.
It's a shame there aren't more people like Paul Rusesabagina and the woman who spoke at my school. So many seem focused on themselves and their own lives, myself included sometimes. I believe the ultimate (终极的) sacrifice is being able to help someone in need with all your heart, ignoring what may happen to you. Paul Rusesabagina displayed just that: he risked his life and family to save others when they needed help the most. I aspire (渴望) to have these qualities, which is why Rusesabagina is my true hero.

Any good author is always hiding the power to surprise up their sleeve. Just when you thought you knew what they were capable (有能力的) of, out of nowhere comes a book that totally catches_the_reader_off_guard.
Sally Gardner, the author of many classy historical novels for young readers, has penned a surprisingly original and highly-developed story for young adults in Maggot Moon. Even the title is attractive.
Your first reaction might be, “Not another dystopian (反乌托邦的) novel! Readers deserve something more original!”But Gardner's tale is just that.
Fifteen-year-old Standish Treadwell lives in a totalitarian (极权主义的) state called the Motherland, where the cruel government makes the laws, and sees that they are carried out.
Standish lives with his grandfather, who tries to hide what the Motherland government really stands for from his impressionable grandson.
But Standish can't be protected from the truth all the time. He wants to know why his parents have been taken away and what happened to his best friend, Hector, who disappeared suddenly.
One day, Standish sees a pupil being beaten to death by a teacher in the school playground. This makes for hard reading as
Gardner doesn't shy away from describing violence.
Standish is the narrator of his own story, and Gardner does a wonderful job of bringing this unusual boy to life. And he is very unusual: he has different coloured eyes, he can't read or write, and he thinks differently to those who strictly follow the Motherland's laws.
The Motherland government is planning to be the first nation to put a man on the Moon. This will provide perfect propaganda (宣传) to strengthen the government's position. But Standish has discovered something that no one should know, and he is determined to destroy the man on the Moon plan at all costs.
Standish is fearless, but he doesn't see all the dangers involved in what he intends to do.
Gardner's dystopian novel is like no other out there on young adult bookshelves.
Extremely moving, thrilling and original Maggot Moon is a stand-out work of youth storytelling and was rightly a winner of the 2013 Carnegie Medal.

Depression. For centuries, individuals have sought to cure this mental disorder through many ways. But what if it were possible to reduce depression with something as simple as light? In Tokyo, engineers replaced commonplace yellow lamps with bright blue lights near train stations to test this idea. Strangely, with the setting up of blue lamps, suicide (自杀) rates dropped down to zero percent. Individuals with depression were discouraged from jumping onto the train tracks with this simple change of environment! While this idea may sound unusual, such crazy ideas often produce genius results.
Another crazy idea, introduced by President Mikheil Saakashvili, was to fire all of Georgia County's policemen. In 2004, Saakashvili discovered that many of the county's police officers were bothering people and were facing allegations of corruption (腐败指控). In response, he decided to fire the entire police department after discovering that 15,000 policemen in the area had taken bribes (贿赂) from local citizens. Many people were alarmed by Saakashvili's extreme decision; however, to their surprise, the county operated peacefully. In fact, crime rates were reportedly lower that week than they had been in previous months. Clearly, Saakashvili's crazy idea led to a fortunate outcome.
Nonetheless, one of the craziest ideas came from Norway, which decided to give its prisoners more freedom. Still in effect, Norway's regulation allows drug dealers and even serial killers to
have access to a movie theater, sun beds and even an occasional game of football. During the summer, prisoners even ride horses and have barbecues! By giving criminals these opportunities, Norwegian officials claim that the criminals will be better equipped to adjust to society after their release from prison.
It is inarguable that when these ideas were put into practice, they caused much debate. Despite the warnings of critics, however, the ideas produced efficient and desirable results that improved society as a whole. Ultimately, the success of these plans proves the truth of the age-old saying: crazy=genius.
