After talking a while, he told me that he had something to show me and share with me. We walked several blocks until we came upon the downtown Public Library.
The bum asked me to sit down and wait a moment. Later he returned with some books, and then said, “I want to teach you two things. Number one is never to judge a book by its cover, for a cover fools you. I’ll bet you think I’m a bum, don’t you?”
I sa id, “I guess so, sir.”
“Well, young man, I've got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest(富有的)men in the world. But a year ago, when my wife passed away, I realized there were certain things I had not yet experienced in life, one of which was what it would be like to live like a bum on the streets. For the past year I have been going from city to city doing just that. Number two is to learn how to read, for there is only one thing that people can’t take away from you, and that is your wisd om(智慧). ”At that moment, he gave me the books he’d pulled from the shelves. His parting request(请求)was for me to never forget what he taught me. I have remembered until today.

Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in
hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat
( 汗) while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low
temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from
running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good
reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather. In addition, lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at St. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through sweat. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, especially in hot conditions because i t’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows, running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to move blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear warm and light clothing to keep sweat away from your sk in. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
44. Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room?
A. Because the weather conditions could be recreated for four seasons.
B. Because the researchers could teach the people there to study science.
C. Because the professor could study science with the group of people.
D. Because the test subjects’ biological measurements could be recorded.
45. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Runni ng in cold weather doesn’t need a lot of energy.
B. Running in cold weather needs heavy clothing to keep warm.
C. Running in hot weather causes hearts beat slower than in cold.
D. Running in hot weather produces more heat than other movements.
46. What is the main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To study why the drop in temperature is good to run.
B. To compare benefits of running in winter and summer.
C. To encourage people to keep running outdoors in winter.
D. To show us how to keep healthy while running in winter.

From driver-less cars to voice control in the house, AI (人工智能) has developed so fast. “AI is going to change the world more than anything in the history of mankind. More than electricity (电力).” said AI expert Dr. Kai-Fu Lee. That’s tr ue. According to a research by scientists at the University of Oxford, AI will be better than humans at translating languages by 2024, writing school essays by 2026, selling things by 2031, writing a bestselling book by 2049, and treating diseases by 2053. In the next few years, AI will become an important part in our lives.
These are just a few examples of how AI will change the future. But wait, what about jobs? Will they steal our jobs in the future?
“AI will take our jobs!” is the most common fear. In fact, with AI automating (自动操作) all kinds of work, we can think of a more comfortable future for ourselves with millions of new job chances. According to a report on the Future of Jobs by World Economic Forum, AI will create 58 million new AI jobs by 2022. There is an excellent chance that AI will replace humans in most of the mental (脑力的) tasks by 2030. However, that does not mean it will take away jobs. Taking India as an example, the Indian AI industry (工业) doubled in size in 2019 compared to the year before. In just one year, three times more companies are working on AI-based projects and this is likely to continue. India almost doubled its AI engineers in 2019 (from 40,000 in 2018 to 72,000 in 2019) but still faces a talent shortage. Top technology companies are in a race to implement AI in our day-to-day lives-which will lead us to a really exciting AI future.
AI Future is coming soon! And there will be more new jobs in the AI industry. Do you want to be a part of this fourth industrial revolution (革命)? Will you upgrade your skills to stay ahead or will you remain still and slow in the industry? The choice remains with you. With the process of education and training, now is the time to prepare for the age of AI.
47. According to the passage, Dr. Kai-Fu Lee thinks that AI will ________.
A. change a lot more than electricity
B. change anything in the human history
C. change the long history of electricity
D. change the world more than electricity
48. What might be included in the report of the Future of Jobs by World Economic Forum?
A. Job races in many large companies.
B. Explanations about job shortage.
C. Explanations about job chances.
D. Job races in some big countries.
49. The underli ned word “implement” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A. search
B. realize
C. compare
D. find
50. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. AI will create more new jobs instead of stealing them
B. most people remain still and slow in the AI industry
C. the fourth industrial revolution is a part of AI Future
D. many people want to upgrade skills to protect AI
八、阅读与表达(共 5 小题;每小题2 分,共10 分)
阅读短文, 根据短文内容回答问题。

Sometimes the world may feel like an unhappy place. However, you can make a difference. If you make even a person smile today, you can help make this world a better place. Here is a list of ideas to help you.
Send a handwritten letter. In this age where everything is sent by email, it is a shock to receive a letter through the post. Writing a few words on paper to a friend is an easy way to make one smile. Even a postcard with a couple of sentences could really make someone's day﹣all for the price of a stamp!
Volunteer. Volunteering is one of the nicest things you can do. It requires (需要)some time and research to find the perfect project before volunteering. There are so many chances, so you are sure to find one that is right for you. And it doesn't necessarily have to take up all your time﹣it could be once a week or a couple of times a year.
Make something for a special person. Whether you're creative or not, taking time to make something for someone else shows how much you appreciate (感激)them. Even if you think you are not creative, the receiver will feel lucky to get such a special gift that you put your time into. Some ideas could include a card, painting, drawing, song, poem or cake!
Tell someone "I love you". It can be anyone﹣a family member or a friend. You don't even have to say "I love you". Perhaps you can tell a friend that you appreciate all they are to you, or remind your mum that you love her. Sometimes, in our busy lives, we forget to take a moment to tell people what they mean to us.
