Have you ever had the desire to wander the world and see what was out there? Exotic (异国的) places call to them. “Come to visit us and we will show you my mysteries,〞 they say.
Every year millions of people pack their suitcases or put on backpacks and flock to visit the seven continents of the world. They wander through the castles and museums of Europe, and the cities and natural wonders of North and South America. Some visit the vast exotic cultures of Asia, Africa and the Middle East. The great outback of Australia is a wonderland for those who go there. And a few lucky people even realize their dreams to visit the most mysterious continent on the earth – Antarctica.
Why do people want to explore the world? It gives them a better understanding about the earth and the people living on it. The British royal family is about to be slimmed down. The queen plans to reduce the number of real royals, as was recently announced. However, there seems little sign of the monarchy (君主) disappearing completely.
Up till the 17th century, the British king or queen was believed to rule by “divine (神的) right〞, which was the idea that God chose the king or queen to rule and that he or she was therefore above the law. However, this idea ended with the English Revolution, in which King Charles the first was imprisoned and then killed in 1649.So what role does the British royal family have today?
Well, the Queen has important formal duties: as Head of State, the Queen represents the UK on visits abroad and invites other world leaders to visit the UK. As Head of the Armed Forces, only the Queen can declare when the UK is at war or when war was over. The Queen also has constitutional duties: She has to sign many government and Commonwealth documents every day.
In addition, the royal family spends a great deal of its time traveling up and down the country in support of different charity projects. But the public in Britain do not believe there should be a royal family. Sometimes, the press and media criticize the royal family as well. One criticism is that British people should not have to pay for the royal family through their taxes.
Today, the royal family works hard to be relevant in the modern world. The queen’s speech on TV is less formal every Christmas, and is now available as a podcast (播客). In 2005, after graduation from university, Prince William spent time teaching English in Uruguay, the sort of work many young British people do at some time in their lives.
60. What can be concluded from the first two paragraphs?
A. The British king or queen is no longer believed to rule by divine right.
B. The British king or queen is about to become common people.
C. The English Revolution put an end to the British royal family in 1649.
D. Th e royal family’s role was most important in Britain in the 17th century.
61. Which of the following is NOT among formal duties of the Queen?
A. Declaring when the UK is at war.
B. Travelling around the world for charity projects.
C. Inviting other world leaders to visit the UK.
D. Signing Commonwealth documents every day.
62. Prince William is mentioned in the passage to show that ________.
A. he is popular in the UK
B. many young British people do voluntary work
C. he has tried to win young people’s adm iration
D. the royal family is trying to change their image
63. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. British people are all in favor of the royal family
B. the British royal family are facing surviving challenges
C. the public are encouraged to oppose the royal family
D. British youths are required to teach English in Uruguay in their lives

There are two things I can count on my dad asking every time he calls me: “Is there anything I can do for you?〞and “How’s the car?〞 I guess he asks what he can do for me because his dad (an air force officer) was never really there for him, and he’s determined to provide me with the support he lacked. During my youth he never missed a school play or softball game. In fact, he wasso supportive that I sometimes longed for one of those dads who dressed better and cared less. But my dad would forever be the guy wearing shorts with dress shoes and black socks, cheering me on, expecting greatness.
His other standard question –How’s the car? – used to strike me as a waste of long-distance dollars from a man who once suggested making a list of what you want to talk about before calling someone out of state. What I now realize is that “How’s the car?〞is not about the car. It’s a father’s way of asking his adult da ughter how she is doing. The advantage is that if there’s something wrong with the car, he knows what to do about it and how much it will cost, whereas if you’re having problems about marriage or doubting a career choice, he might have to act Mom on the line.
At age thirty I finally took the plunge(跳进) into adulthood by renting a car without my dad’s help or advice. I’m sure my dad was hurt rather than proud. Though a daughter’s independence is evidence of a job well done, it still implies the job’s done, and many fathers are unwilling to retire. Even when my dad was overworked, he’d happily jump on a plane if I said I needed help. His frequent question “Is there anything I can do for you?〞 underlines the fact that he wishes there was still something he cou ld provide. It’s interesting: e ven though we’re tied by blood and I love him no matter what, he still seems to need a concrete function – suggesting stocks, finding the cheapest plane fare – to
feel he has a role in my life.

People who enjoy a dream-filled sleep are better at recalling information and making links between facts when they wake, scientists found. But recharging with a shallow nap (小睡) offers no such mental improvement, the research suggests. The results of the study
add to the evidence that Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is very important to the brain’s ability to strengthen memories.
An average night’s sleep i ncludes four or five periods of REM sleep, but these tend
to be longer towards the end of the night. This means that adults who get less than the recommended seven to eight hours a night — and therefore inadequate REM sleep — may be damaging their mind’s a bility to form strong memories. Although REM sleep is not classified
as a type of deep sleep, it is only reached after the brain has passed through deep sleep stages.
In the most recent study, participants were shown groups of three words — such as “cook ie〞, “heart〞, and “sixteen〞— and asked to find another word that can be associated with all three words. In this example, the answer would have been “sweet〞. They were tested once in the morning and then given the same task again in the afternoon.
In between, some were allowed a nap with REM sleep, some a nap without REM sleep, while
the others had a quiet rest period. The quiet rest and non-REM sleep groups showed no improvement in their test results, but the REM sleep group improved on their morning performance by an average of almost 40 percent.
Dr Sara Mednick, a sleep researcher at the University of California who led the study, believes the formation of connections between previously unassociated information in the brain —which leads to creative problem-solving —is encouraged by mental changes which occur during REM sleep. People woken while their closed eyes made rapid movements recalled much more colorful and detailed dreams than people woken during other stages of sleep.
72. According to the passage, to have a good memory, a person had better _________ at night.
A. sleep four to five hours at most
B. sleep as much as possible
C. have a shallow sleep
D. sleep with four or five periods of REM
73. If you don’t sleep seven to eight hours at night very often, _________.
A. your strong memories might be ruined
B. you will tend to have longer periods
of REM
C. you will have an adequate REM sleep
D. your mind can form strong memories
74. The third paragraph is mainly about _________ of the most recent study.
A. the content
B. the participants
C. the process
D. the results
75. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To explain the importance of REM sleep to one’s memories.
B. To introduce the new study on sleep and memories.
C. To discuss the relationship between sleep and memories.
D. To persuade readers to sleep seven to eight hours at night.

Interest is a kind of power that can drive people to learn actively and happily. And it also makes learning more effective and efficient. In other word, interest is the best teacher for a learner.
I really appreciate the opinion. I began to be crazy about English when I was a little boy / girl. And I got interested in foreign cultures ad customs in particular to meet my curiosity. I read English stories, listened to English songs or watched English films every day, all of which even seemed to be the “meal〞 of my daily life. As a result, I always
did very well in English exams.
In a word, interest is the key to success. Anyone who is interested in something will devote himself to it. Surely a big miracle will be made.。
