In China, the 24 solar terms were created thousands of years ago to guide farming production. But the solar term culture is still useful today to guide people's lives. Here are the latest three of them.
The Start of Summer is on May 6th this year. It means the arrival of summer. The 24 solar terms each suggest the position of the sun every time it travels 15 degrees on the ecliptic longitude. On the day of Start of Summer, the sun's rays reach an angle of 45 degrees to the earth. The rainfall increases and it is a very important time for the harvest (收获) of summer crops. It's a tradition to eat eggs on the day of the Start of Summer, because people believe a round egg is a symbol of a happy life and eating eggs on that day is a wish for good health.
Grain Buds (小满) is on May 21st this year. It means that the seeds from the crops are becoming full. And summer harvest is about to begin. On this day, the sun's rays reach an angle of 60 degrees to the earth. A saying about rain during this time mentions, "A heavy rainfall makes the river full." Because of the great increase in rainfall, rivers are full of water. It is also the harvest season for fishermen. This is a good time to enjoy great tasting fish.
Grain in Ear (芒种) is on June 6th this year. The arrival of Grain in Ear means harvest of crops. It is also a busy period for farmers. Rainfall increases during Grain in Ear compared to the eight solar terms before. The weather is hot during the Grain in Ear period, so vegetables and fruits of a cool nature are suggested. Tomatoes and watermelons are classical choices.

When I was a girl growing up, I cannot once ever remember either my mom or my grandma wasting food.
Anything we didn't eat at one meal was leftovers. I can remember my grandma making a huge pot of potatoes. We would all eat until we were full enough, but there were always about half of the leftover potatoes. A few days later, Grandma would take those potatoes out of the fridge, boil some noodles, add some vegetables and mix them all together. And I also remember when I watched my mom fry bacon for us in the mornings, she would always take the bacon oil carefully and pour it into a bottle. Then she would use it later to add flavor (调味品) to so many other dishes. I was an adult before I realized that potatoes didn't actually taste like bacon!
I learned their lessons well, and after I grew up, I tried to never waste food myself. I always planned the week's meals ahead of time and only bought what was on my shopping list so that nothing went to waste. Every meal went into our stomachs and any leftovers were later eaten by either myself, my boys, my husband or my dogs. To me, throwing food into the bin was just wrong.
However, when it comes to living, there are no leftovers. Life is just like a
feast. Each moment that you don't live is lost forever. Life cannot be saved or stored. Each day is a fresh beginning. Live each moment of your life to the fullest, then.
23. The writer's grandma used the leftover potatoes to ____________.
A. mix with noodles
B. boil some vegetables
C. fry bacon
D. throw away
24. Why did the potatoes cooked by the writer's mom taste like bacon
A. Because she mixed the bacon with potatoes.
B. Because she put potatoes into the containers.
C. Because she poured the bacon oil into potatoes.
D. Because she was very good at cooking potatoes.
25.According to the passage, how did the writer save food in her way
A. By shopping ahead of time.
B. By throwing it into litter bins.
C. By following her mother's list.
D. By planning the next week's food.
26. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. It is never too old to learn.
B. Eat to live, but not live to eat.
C. Neither food nor life should be wasted.
D. There is no such thing as a free lunch.
D
We've all heard of fake (假的) news; but do any of us really understand what it means Is it a story that isn't real or true Does the person behind the story make a mistake
Actually, there are two kinds of fake news - misinformation and disinformation, When someone believes false information is true and shares it with others, this is called misinformation. When someone knows that he or she is sharing false information with others, then it's called disinformation. It's important to learn how to tell fake news so that we're not tricked into believing it or letting it affect our opinions and actions.
Usually, when people share fake news, they don't realize that it's fake. Sometimes people just want to show a service or product is good, so that someone can make money. Fake news can also be shared when someone wants others to hear his or her own personal opinions, and be influenced by him or her. The information often includes rumors (谣言) and lies and it can be spread to help or hurt a person, a group, an organization or even a country.
With fake news, sharing is not caring! When fake news causes stress or hurt to others, those who have helped spread it (by sharing it with friends on the Internet, for example) will say they are not to blame (谴责). In their opinion, they did not write it, they only shared it.
Sharing fake news is just like adding fuel (燃料) to a fire. It is exactly
what the person behind the fake news wants and needs. If the false information doesn't get shared, it doesn't get seen. And if it doesn't get seen, it cannot hurt others. So, when it comes to fake news, we must refuse to share it, too.
27. Tom knows the news is not true, but still shares it with others. This kind of news is called ___________.
A. Misinformation
B. good news
C. disinformation
D. bad news
28. From Paragraph 3, we can know ___________.
A. who hardly tells fake news
B. why people share fake news
C. how people share fake news
D. how often people share fake news
29. Which of the following is the writer's opinion
A. Everyone tells lies in daily life.
B. Fake news may hurt other people.
C. It's always necessary to spread misinformation.
D. We should not blame people for sharing fake news.
30. The purpose of the passage is ___________.
A. to encourage us to share with others
B. to tell us how to find out fake news
C. to warn us not to cause stress to others
D. to advise us not to share fake news with others
