Chris Smith looked like any other young boy in his class: thick hair, a wide smile, and playing sports. By all appearances, life for Chris was the same as it was for a hundred other boys in the small town where he grew up, except for the constant evictions (驱赶), and eventually being homeless.
Chris’ father was reckless (鲁莽的) with finances and dishonest in business. His mother tried her best to run the home until Chris’ little brother drowned (溺亡), then his father went to prison, and finally the family fell apart.
“My mom shut down emotionally. Everything got worse,” Chris remembers. Then she was gone and ran away from home without telling Chris. He did the best he could, sleeping on his newly married sister’s sofa. “They didn’t have much money, and I know it was a burden to take me in at 17 years old, I was going to drop out from high school and make it on my own.”
But Chris’ history teacher had different ideas. When Chris’ study began to go down, she cornered him. “You’re the smartest kid in the class,” she told him. “If you don’t graduate, you’re going to regret it.”
“School was my safe place,” Chris says. School also offered him heat and food. It became the closest thing to home he could find, compared to his father’s old truck that became his bed and his study space. He remembers his hair freezing onto the window in the winter.
When graduation came, Chris earned a full scholarship to college and graduated in the top 10 of his class. When it’s time to apply for medical residencies, Chris set his sights high. He applied for residencies around the country and included the No. 1 program in the nation: Johns Hopkins. And then the letter came. Chris was in.
“I didn’t really think I had a chance. But I had learned to give everything my best shot. Life is never fair. But if you don’t give up, you will give yourself a better chance to make it,” Chris says.
4.Why did Chris’ mother leave home?

C.From Homeless to Medical Resident D.Great Hopes Make Great Man
Traditionally, people have been forced to reduce complex choices to a small handful of options that don’t do justice to their true desires. For example, in a restaurant, the limitations of the kitchen, the way supplies have to be ordered and the realities of restaurant cooking make you get a menu of a few dozen standardized options, with the possibility of some modifications (修改) around the edges. We are so used to these bottlenecks that we don’t even notice them. And when we do, we tend to assume they are the unavoidable cost of scale (规模) and efficiency. And they are. Or, at least, they were.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to overcome this limitation. By storing rich representations of people’s preferences and histories on the demand side, along with equally rich representations of capabilities, costs and creative possibilities on the supply side, AI systems enable complex customization at large scale and low cost. Imagine walking into a restaurant and knowing that the kitchen has already started working on a meal optimized (优化) for your tastes, or being presented with a personalized list of choices.
There have been some early attempts at this. People have used ChatGPT to design meals based on dietary restrictions and what they have in the fridge. It’s still early days for these technologies, but once they get working, the possibilities are nearly endless.
Recommendation systems for digital media have reduced their reliance on traditional intermediaries. Radio stations are like menu items: Regardless of how nuanced (微妙) your taste in music is, you have to pick from a handful of options. Early digital platforms were only a little
better: “This person likes jazz, so we’ll suggest more Jazz.” Today’s streaming platforms use listener histories and a broad set of characters describing each track to provide each user with personalized music recommendations.
A world without artificial bottlenecks comes with risks — loss of jobs in the bottlenecks, for example — but italso has the potential to free people from the straightjackets that have long limited large-scale human decision-’making. In some cases — restaurants, for example — the effect on most people might be minor. But in others, likepolitics and hiring, the effects could be great.
8.What does the underlined word “bottlenecks” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Facing too many choices.B.Choosing from limited options.
C.Avoiding the cost of choosing.D.Having too many desires to satisfy. 9.How can AI meet everyone’s needs?
A.By meeting both ends of supply and demand.
B.By decreasing representations on the supply side.
C.By disconnecting the sides of supply and demand.
D.By reducing people’s preferences on the demand side.
10.What’s the similarity between radio stations and menu items?
A.They are a necessary part in people’s life.B.They offer limited choices.
C.They depend on digital platforms.D.They provide reasonable suggestions. 11.What does the text mainly talk about?
A.The variety of human’s choices.B.Standardized optrarts in daily life.
C.AI settlements to the option bottlenecks.D.Recommendation systems for digital media.
For Caribbean box jellyfish (水母), learning is literally a no-brainer.
In a new experiment, these animals learned to spot and avoid obstacles (障碍物) despite having no central brain, researchers report in Current Biology. This is the first evidence that jellyfish can make mental connections between events and change their behavior accordingly. “Maybe learning doesn’t need a very complex nervous system, but rather, learning is an essential part of nerve cells,” says Jan Bielecki, a neuroethologist at Kiel University in Germany. If so, the new finding could help trace how learning evolved in animals.
Bielecki and his colleagues wondered if Caribbean box jellyfish could learn that low-contrast objects, which might at first seem distant, were actually close by. The team put 12 jellyfish into a round tank surrounded by low-contrast, gray and white stripes. A camera filmed the animals’ behavior for about seven minutes.
At first, the jellyfish seemed to interpret the gray stripes as distant roots and swam into the tank wall. But those collisions (碰撞) seemed to lead the jellyfish to treat the gray stripes more like close roots in dirty water, and the animals started avoiding them. The jellies’ average distance from the tank wall increased from about 2.5 centimeters in the first couple of minutes to about 3.6 centimeters in the final couple of minutes. Their average collisions into the wall dropped from 1.8 per minute to 0.78 per minute.
“I found that really amazing,” says Nagayasu Nakanishi, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, who has studied jellyfish nervous systems but was not involved in the new work. “I never thought jellyfish could really learn.”
Neurobiologist Björn Brembs views the results more cautiously, noting the small number of jellyfish tested and the variability in their performance. “I want this to be true, as it would be very cool,” says Brembs. Experiments with more jellyfish could convince him that the animals really do learn.
12.What can we know about the jellyfish in paragraph 2?
A.They can avoid obstacles with a central brain.
B.They can change their behaviour after evolution.
C.They may have learning abilities with nerve cells.
D.They may develop a very complex nervous system.
13.What change in behavior did the jellyfish show in the experiment?
A.They completely ignored the gray stripes.
B.They gradually started avoiding the gray stripes.
C.They could avoid collisions if given enough time.
D.They increased their collisions with the tank wall.
14.What conclusion can be drawn from the experiment?
A.Jellyfish preferred the gray stripes over other things.
B.Jellyfish were unable to learn from their environment.
C.Jellyfish relied on the distant objects to change their behavior.
D.Jellyfish showed a learning process and adjusted their behavior.
15.What does Brembs imply in the last paragraph?
A.He believes more testing is needed to confirm the results.
B.He is excited by the potential implications of the findings.
C.He dismisses the findings as irrelevant to jellyfish behavior.
D.He is doubtful due to the consistent performance of the jellyfish.
Finding the words to explain how you feel isn’t always easy. This is why young people’s mental health charity has made “My V oice Matters” the theme of this year’s Children’s Mental Health Week. 16
Do you have trouble sharing your thoughts or worry no one will listen if you do? Making your voice heard means understanding that your words matter and your opinions count. Dr Julia Clements, a psychologist, says that it means expressing your views, thoughts and feelings, not bottling them all up, and being open to hearing the thoughts, feelings and views of others too.
17 In fact you don’t have to use your voice at all. “You can express what you like and don’t like or what you want for the future by writing or drawing instead,” says Clements. “It’s about finding ways to share what matters to you,” she explains. Why is it important?
18 Scientists have discovered that sharing your feelings produces a feel-good chemical in your brain that makes you feel relaxed and calm. Your voice can make a big difference to other people too, including friends and families. Clements says, “You can spread kindness and happiness simply by speaking. With a few kind words, you could help someone feel good about themselves or let them know they are supported.” 19 How can you find your voice?
Clements suggests practising conversations with friends, parents or carers on the way home from school and seeing if you have different opinions about something. If you’re struggling to explain your feelings, find a way that feels right for you, whether it’s talking face-to-face or writing it down. 20 When you’re ready, “Take a deep breath and believe in yourself,” says Clements. “Know that your opinion matters.”
A.What does speaking up mean?
B.What are the benefits of speaking up?
C.Making yourself heard isn’t about shouting the loudest.
D.Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you are confused about something.
E.Everyone has their own unique way of processing and sharing their feelings.
F.Sharing your feelings with a person you trust will help you make sense of them.
G.Words have the power to uplift someone’s spirits and make a positive impact on their day.
