Last summer, Katie Steller pulled off the freeway on her way to work inMinneapolis. She stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her window and shouted. “Hey. I’m driving around giving free haircuts. Do you want one right now?” The man laughed, then paused. “Actually,” he said, “I was really hoping to get a haircut.” Steller pulled out a red chair from her car and helped the man cut his hair immediately. After the work was done, the man looked in a mirror. “I look good!” he said.
Up to now, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts around the city to people with little influence, and she is strongly aware of the power of her cleanup job.
As a teen, she suffered from a severe disease, causing her hair to get thinned, so her mother arranged for Steller’s first professional haircut. “To sit down and have somebody look at me and talk to me like a person and not just an illness, it helped me feel cared about and less alone,” she says. After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own barbershop so she could help people feel the way she’d felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology (美容术) school in 2009, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project, reaching out to people on the streets. Her aim was that by doing some kind acts, others would be inspired to spread their own.
“Part of what broke my heart was just how lonely peoplelooked,” she said. “I thought maybe I’d go around and ask if people want free haircuts. I can’t fix their problems, but maybe I can help them feel less alone for a moment.”
It all began with a belief in simple acts of kindness, such as a free haircut. “The way you show up in the world matters,” said Steller. “You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.”
1. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By making a comparison.
B. By giving a reason.
C. By raising a question.
D. By describing a scene.

B. Her interest in cosmetology.
C. Her care for those in need.
D. Her wish to fight severe diseases.
3. What did Stellar expect from the project?
A. To spread kindness.
B. To solve social problems.
C. To deal with relationships.
D. To make people look smarter.

If you think you’d like to live on Mars, you may have that possibility by 2023. A Dutch company called Mars One will soon advertise for people interested in colonizing (开拓) Mars. Ifyou have all the necessary skills, you could be one of the first colonists. Are you ready for the challenge?
You won’t have to pay for the mission to Mars. Mars One has already received money from some donors and is hoping to get more from TV viewers who will become interested in the show where all applicants have a debate for the rare chances.
The main responsibility of the first colonists is to create an artificial environment on Mars where there is no air to breathe and no land to farm. Scientists know it’s quite possible because something similar has already been done inAntarctica.
Another problem is that space travel to Mars takes nearly a year to get to Mars and the colonists will live the rest of their lives there. When a human lives in an environment without gravity or with low gravity for a long time, the systems in the body weaken. Luckily, spinning (旋转) the spaceship can create artificial gravity, and artificial gravity can ease these problems. It will also be difficult for Mars colonists to be far from home, living in small spaces, and seeing the same people over and over. Colonists with depression could put the mission in danger. Fortunately, a few years ago, a joint Russian and European project called the Mars500 Mission studied people’s reactions in a Mars-like environment. It is viewed as a great success because scientists were able to see how people handle emotional and physical stresses.
Recent studies show that seven percent of people would want to go on such an adventure.
Mars One will soon start accepting its first colonists. Are you interested?
4. What do we know about the applicants to Mars from the first two paragraphs?
A. They will land on Mars in 2023.
B. They can get money from donors.
C. They will compete in a TV show.
D. They do not need special skills.
5. What will the first colonists do to solve the basic living problems on Mars?
A. Create earth-like conditions.
B. Build labs inAntarctica.
C. Spin the spaceship.
D. Start the Mars500Mission.
6. What can the life of the first colonists be like according to the passage?
A. Difficult and dangerous.
B. Different but adaptable.
C. Challenging and unbearable .
D. Acceptable but depressing.
7. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Mars: our final destination?
B. Ready to be Mars’ colonists?
C. Space travel: a thrilling adventure?
D. Are you a qualified Mars astronaut?
C
In Colombia a group, named WebConserva, is carrying out a project in the San Lucas Mountains with the help of coffee growers.
The San Lucas area is one of the most unexplored places in Colombia, which is home to many thousands of species of animals and plants. Yet gold mining and coca farming have dealt a blow to its ecosystem. To limit additional development in the San Lucas area, the group helps coffee growers by linking them with processors from around the country.
Colombia has more different kinds of living things than any other country except neighboring Brazil. In 2016, the Colombian government signed a peace deal with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia ending years of civil war. As a result, more land became accessible for use, with deforestation(毁林) coming along. Government information shows that in 2017, almost 220,000 hectares of forest were destroyed compared to around 124,000 hectares in 2015.
To date, the project includes 10 families who farm 400 hectares of coffee plants, which costs about $77,000 dollars a year. WebConserva hopes that, in time, 200 families will be included. At that level, 20,000 hectares of untouched forest could be protected. In San Lucas, the families promise not to cut down trees to expand their crops or to hunt wild animals from the forests. In return, they receive $ 250 to $ 300 per 125 kilograms of coffee, an enviable amount there. Arcadio Barajas is among those taking part. His new coffee plantation(种植园) makes a barrier between cattle farms and forests where wild animals like the jaguar live and hunt. In this way, he doesn't
have to kill wild animals to protect his cattle.
Barajas said that pulling down the forest to plant coca and killing wildlife were against his will. Now he feels that growing coffee lets him be astewardof the land. "I'm taking care of the environment, the forest and the animals," he said.
8. Why does WebConserva set up the project?
A. To help local farmers make money.
B. To expand areas of coffee growing.
C. To link processors with coffee growers.
D. To conserve biodiversity in the Mountains.
9. What happened after Colombia’s civil war was over?
A. Colombia helped many needy families.
B. Colombia lost lots of areas of forests.
C. Colombia started to save damaged forests.
D. Colombia became more peaceful than Brazil.
10. Which is probably a function of Barajas's coffee plantation?
A. A method of protecting cattle and wildlife.
B. A substitute for hunting of wild animals.
C. A barrier between man and wild animals.
D. A shelter for cattle against human hunters.
11. What does the underlined word "steward" mean in the last paragraph?
A. Farmer.
B. Master.
C. Guardian.
D. Explorer.
D
Not long after the first fitness magazine was published, a list probably followed soon after, ranking the best fitness equipment. This tradition has continued, with the implied message: usethisand exercise willbe yours.
And that's part of the problem, says Dr. Lieberman, a professor of Harvard University. There isn't one “best” anything to achieve fitness. Besides, people understand exercise is good for them. Knowledge about exercise still doesn't motivate.
Before you can answer why, it helps to look at history. Before the Industrial Revolution, people fetched water and walked up stairs because they had to. But then technology made life and work easier. Exercise has become
something that people have to carve out time for. “It's a fundamental instinct to avoid physical activity when it's neither necessary nor rewarding,” he says.
It would seem like being healthy would qualify as necessary, but a doctor's prescription to exercise “can make it like taking cod liver oil,” Lieberman says. “Sometimes it works, but more often than not, it doesn't. And it's still coming across as an order, and “not having a heart attack in five years is not an immediate reward,” says Dr. Beth Frates, assistant professor at Harvard Medical School.
People might not want to exercise because it's never been enjoyable. Most of us probably have memories of gym class, not being picked for a team, or being in a fitness center that's filled with in-shape people. The majority don't feel excited. They feel that exercise isn't for them, but it can be. Coaching people in an empowering and motivating way can work much better than ordering someone to exercise. It starts with an expanded definition of what counts as exercise, and an injection of what's rarely used to describe exercise, but is certainly allowed: namely, fun.
12. What does the underlined “this” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The magazine.
B. The tradition.
C. The equipment.
D. The message.
13. What can we infer about technology?
A. It improves life quality.
B. It saves people's time.
C. It drives social progress.
D. It makes exercise less likely.
14. Why does the author mention “cod liver oil” in paragraph 4?
A. To attach importance to health.
B. To present a doctor's prescription.
C. To explain exercise is considered inessential.
D. To introduce the latest medical application.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Exercise should be made more joyful.
B. It's more fun to work out with others.
C. We may encounter bad workout experiences.
D. Orders work well to motivate people to exercise.

52.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In one of my Management classes in college, I sat in the same seat in the front every day. Every single day I sat there. Then one day I found myself sitting next to some foreign guy who hardly spoke English. His name was Albert. The most advanced thing that I had heard him say in English was: “Wow, my muffin(松饼) is really good!”.
This guy also had a habit of stacking(堆放) every item he owned in the exact space I sat. His bag,his food, his books, and his phone were always right on my desk space. Then every single time I walked into class, Albert would greet me with a broad smile: “Ah, Tom. You’re here. Okay,” and start wildly clearing my desk of his belongings. He then made it a habit to say “Ready for class, yeah?” and gave me a high five. Every morning the guy sitting next to me would give me a high five.
I was always annoyed with this guy. I was thinking: “Dude, you know I sit here in this seat every day. Why are you always stacking your stuff(物品) here?” And the last thing I wanted to do was give a guy who hardly spoke my language high fives at 8 in the morning! Just get your stuff off my desk!
But today I came to class and was a few minutes late. I was standing outside the classroom because I had to send a quick text. But through the door out of the comer of my eye, I could see my space—Of course, the usual—my desk was filled with Albert’s belongings!
As I was standing there on my phone, I noticed another guy who was also late walking into the class before me and trying to take my seat since it was closest to the door.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
