Chelsea Peddle is a death doula: one of dozens of professionals in Canada who provide emotional and practical guidance for people near death and for their families. She earned her certificate at Dawson College, in Vancouver, but was originally set on this path at age 15 when her father died of an aggressive brain tumor. The experience had initially left Peddle with a crushing fear of illness and death. “I know what it’s like to feel lost and to not know what benefits and resources are available,” she says, “or even how to be with someone who’s dying.”
About half of Peddle’s clients today are in palliative(缓解的)care. Many are undergoing treatments, such as chemotherapy, for terminal illnesses. Every one of them is simply trying to wrap their head around the process of dying. She acts as a sounding board, directs them to resources, and helps them cope with the big emotions that come with knowing you’re going to die. “Sometimes there’s a sense of unfairness,” she says, “but a lot of the time there’s also this amazing level of acceptance.”
高二英语试题第4 页(共14
Facing death is often harder for the families. One of Peddle’s clients, for example, was recently caring for her sick mom in the U.S., living away from her family in Victoria, B.C., Canada, and felt guilty and conflicted for wanting the whole thing to be over already. Peddle helped her process those tough feelings and release the shame she was holding. “She had no idea that it was an entirely normal way to feel,” Peddle says. “She was so relieved that it didn’t make her a horrible person and that she wasn’t alone.”
During the pandemic, Peddle has had to figure out new ways to do her job: she can’t sit by a client’s bedside or visit their homes. Instead, she’s learned to build a level of trust and communication over camera sessions. At the same time, she’s noticed more people facing the inevitable case of death, creating advanced care plans and wills. “The veil on death has been pulled back,” she says. “The fact that death can visit anybody, regardless of their age, is more apparent now.”
24. When did Peddle have the idea to start the career?
A. After graduation at Dawson College.
B. When she helped a client faced with death.
C. When her father died of a terminal illness.
D. After her father recovering from a brain tumor.
25. Why did Peddle’s client that was caring for her mom in the US feel guilty and shame?
A. Her desire for her mother’s recovery from the illness.
B. Her plan of travelling back to Canada.
C. Her family living far away from her at that time.
D. Her expectation of her mother coming to the end of life soon.
26. In what way does Peddle carry out her job during the pandemic period?
A. Through emails.
B. Via voice communication.
C. By online video.
D. By a driving-through visit.
27. What does the underlined word “inevitable” mean?
A. unavoidable.
B. unexpected.
C. uncomfortable.
D. unpleasant.

Some dinosaurs grew slowly and steadily. Others experienced a growth spurt as they neared adulthood. A “growth spurt” is when something or someone grows very quickly. For example, children usually have a growth spurt between the ages of 12 and 18. The same appears to be true for some dinosaurs! To reach their findings, scientists cut through the fossilized bones of dinosaurs. They examined the yearly growth rings of the bones from 11 kinds of theropods collected from their legs. Theropods are a group of dinosaurs that mainly walked on two legs and include big meat-eating dinosaurs, like tyrannosaurus rex, commonly known as T. rex.
高二英语试题第5 页(共14
The research team looked at fossils from museums in the United States, Canada, China, and Argentina. They were able to cut into the fossilized bones of one of the world's most famous T. rexes, known as Sue. These bones showed that the T. rex and its relatives have a period of extreme growth during the years before adulthood. It also shows that they reached full adult size by around age 20. Sue is about 13 meters tall. She is believed to have lived to about 33 years. But not all the large theropods had more steady rates of growth over a longer period of time. The Argentinian dinosaur did not reach its full adult size until it reached about 40 years of age. It is believed to have lived to about age 50.
Big theropods share the same basic body design. They walked on two legs and had large skulls and strong jaws. And of course, they had threatening teeth.
The lead researcher on the study is Tom Cullen. He is a paleontologist with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and North Carolina State University. He said that before this study, “it was known that T. rex grew very quickly, but it was not clear if all theropod dinosaurs reached giant size in the same way, or if there were many ways they grew so big.”
28. How did scientists know the dinosaurs’ ages?
A. By knowing the theropods’ height.
B. By examining the conditions of the teeth.
C. By comparing the theropods’ bodies.
D. By counting the growth rings of the bones.
29. Which part of the bones do you think the scientists examined?
A. Fossilized legs.
B. Fossilized teeth.
C. Fossilized skulls.
D. Fossilized jaws.
30.Why did Tom Cullen lead the research?
A. To analyze why theropods grew very quickly.
B. To know the age of different theropods.
C. To know why theropods grew so big.
D. To prove the idea that theropods shared the same features.
31. What does this passage mainly want to explore?
A. The reason why theropods dinosaurs had the same body design.
B. The Argentinian dinosaur was the longest-lived dinosaur.
C. Theropod dinosaurs had different rates of growth.
D. The way that some dinosaurs grew so big.

The Christmas season has always been important for the economy. Stores, hotels and travel businesses usually make their money at Christmas time. But it is unclear if the holiday season helps other industries. Governments are hoping to re-open their economies in time for Christmas. Some economists, however, wonder if it will do any good.
高二英语试题第6 页(共14
The question is especially important this year. There is a risk that re-opening too early could hurt public health, economic growth and employment.
In Britain, December sales are usually around 12 percent of the yearly total. Economists say that helps retail businesses, even if people buy less in January to recover from December spending.
However, lower-priced Black Friday sales across Europe in late November has made December spending less important. The growth in online purchasing also makes it less necessary for some stores to stay open. German retail association HDE expects online sales to fuel an increase of 1.2 percent over 2019.
Some economists believe that even if people do not buy before Christmas, they will spend on other things. Paul Donovan is chief economist at UBS Global Wealth Management. He said in his weekly blog, “Not spending on drinks at a Christmas party translates into the purchase of new furniture.”
And usually, productivity drops as Christmas nears. Workers rush out to buy things or go to parties. One research company found that 25 percent of workers said they did less work or tried to avoid more work during the holiday season.
There are even some economists who believe the act of buying gifts is bad for the economy. As Yale economist Joel Waldfogel once said that when people pay a lot for gifts, especially unwanted gifts, that was like destroying their economic value.
Most economists continue to argue about this idea. However, few disagree that Christmas does have unintended and harmful effects on the economy, from drunk-driving accidents to increased paper waste. Information on new coronavirus cases in coming days will show if Europe can reopen for Christmas. But for the economy, it may not make any difference.
32. How many reasons have made spending in December less important?
A. 1.
B. 2.
C. 3.
D. 4.
33. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. Many people like to buy furniture before Christmas.
B. If people save money on drinks, they will have money to buy furniture.
C. If people do not shop for Christmas, they will have other consumptions.
D. Drinking at a Christmas party will cost you a lot.
34. Which opinion do most economists agree with?
A. Productivity increases due to the Christmas season.
B. Business should reopen for Christmas.
C. Christmas don’t have good effects on the economy.
D. Christmas sales helps business a lot.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. If European can reopen for Christmas.
B. Why Christmas season is important for the economy.
C. Influences of Christmas season on economy.

第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
To further improve your productivity and keep a better balance between work and life, you should be aware of how important downtime(停工期)is. It always enables you to achieve the most ideal work efficiency. __36__ Making the time
For those who are not used to taking time off work and having a rest, the best way is to set a schedule for downtime. __37__ Then set your alarm so that you will be reminded when it’s time to have a break, as you can easily ignore the passage of time when you are absorbed in work.
Treating your downtime strictly
__38__ Without rules you may easily give up downtime and your attention can be distracted by other things, so you are recommended to set rules that prevent you from crossing the boundaries.
Take using computer as an example. __39__ If you are fond of surfing the Internet or playing games during a break, you should include the use of computer in your schedule, yet there needs to be a line between what to do and what not to do with it, and why and why not to use it.
Optimizing(优化)your downtime
How long did your last week’s breaks last? Is the duration longer or shorter than the scheduled time? Was your work efficiency affected because you lost control and spent a bit too much time enjoying your breaks? Or did you lack sufficient downtime? Modify your plans based on your situations. Once you find the problem lies in carrying out the plan rather than the plan itself, you’d better crack open a book on self-discipline.
__40__ Self-discipline takes a place here, and it’s essential to keep in mind that downtime isn’t equal to a waste of time. Your continued productivity and happiness really depend on it to a great extent.
A. Pay attention to the rules.
B. Have your downtime attached to rules.
C. Below are some tips for planning these breaks.
D. Highlight the needed time in black and white.
E. Following your plan could be difficult at the beginning.
F. You’d better close it if you’re not self-disciplined enough.
G. You can measure whether it is necessary in your downtime.

Yesterday, I went to an amazing Chinese art festival. There were different stands which artists could present their skills and wonderfully teaching the visitors! It was definite an exciting experience for a foreign student like me. What caught up my attention first in a breathtaking exhibition of Chinese porcelain was a 15th-century qinghua bowl, vividly illustrating a dragon played with a ball.
Then I tried paper cutting, that is, making images out of paper. It was difficult, and a lot of fun! Under an artist’s help, I managed to make one in shape of a fish. Meanwhile, there was also an old man writing Chinese calligraphy and his writing was very free and elegant that I was attracted! Then another man sitting next to him shows me how seal cutting worked. He made one for me with my name in Chinese—pretty awesome!
